Gameplay isn't great however it has a very good story, felt like a Miyazaki movie with basic puzzles/platforming between. You can make some choices that change the story a bit, but overall the game is linear. Highly recommend if you like those kind of stories, but if you are focused on gameplay then pass on this.

A platformer with Studio Ghibli vibes, an interesting world and lots of charming living objects. The controls were a bit wonky, but it didn't ruin my enjoyment.

This game will really rip your heart out. It is an incredible game, worth every penny in my opinion. I loved the different characters, the story line was unique and beautifully crafted, the art was stunning, and the music made everything all that much emotional. My one time play through was over 7 hours and I do still have somethings I want to go back and redo to get the achievements eventually.

Unfortunately, although it has been installed on my computer for years, no matter how much I tried, I could not like it. I had the opportunity to play the game on a different devices and, as a result, I had previously assumed that my own device was the source of the problem. However, upon switching to a more up-to-date system, I came to realise that it was, in fact, the game's mechanics that were the source of the issue.
Clumsy as hell.
While the hand-drawn animations and art design are commendable, the same cannot be said for the in-game puzzles and gameplay, which are, at best, mediocre and, at worst, unsatisfactory.
Actually, on my behalf, it could be the worst 2D Platform game I've encountered. Sorry.

What a surprise this game has been! I came expecting a traditional 2D platformer with Ghibli-esque visuals, but what I got was... a hidden gem and I truly mean it.

A game that channels that Ghibli magic in more ways than just visuals! A surprisingly deep story that manages to be both moving and deep despite its naivete and bizarre characters offering meaningful choices along the way. I played it in one sitting, yes all 8 hours! I don't even like platformers, 2D or otherwise! It's that good!

The only complaint I have is that some of the puzzles/sections are bafflingly obtuse. One in the particular, near the end of the game, almost made me give up on it because despite watching a video of the solution I couldn't replicate it. I'll even leave the link to save you the trouble and the risk of losing this otherwise masterpiece of a game: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F-wKjzcdgQY

WOW, what a journey!

Starting this game I was amazed by the beautiful graphics that had reminded me of Hayao Miyazaki's masterpieces.

And the more I was playing - the deeper was the story.

Adding here a beautiful music and nicely done scenario (The game will remind you of almost every choice you've made. And sometimes you will really regret of what you've done or said previously)

For ones who love adventures - this is totally MUST HAVE!

A puzzle platformer with a hand-drawn animation style. Some of the platforming is a little wonky and some of the puzzles can bug out, meaning you have to go to the main menu and start again. Those can be serious problems, but the story and the characters are engaging enough that it is worth it.

Sights & Sounds

Ghibli-evoking artwork complemented by a gorgeous score

  • I've been playing 2D platformers essentially since I was capable of forming memories. In terms of visual presentation, I can think of only a few that were as beautiful as Forgotton Anne. And that even takes into consideration that I'm not generally inclined towards anime artstyles. The art features that Studio Ghibli sort of attention to detail that I can't get enough of
  • The dark city streets are lined by homes and businesses sporting varied architecture, building interiors feature a lived-in amount of clutter, and rooftop vistas offer a great sense of scale and distance that highlight the size and scope of the city you're traversing. All the while, the attention paid to lighting and shadow serve to provide a moody, almost intimate feel
  • If I had to dredge up any gripe about the visuals, it may be that the animation both within cutscenes and gameplay is notably choppy. Don't misinterpret that to mean that it the game looks bad in motion; they could have removed even more frames in the walking/running/climbing animation cycles before it would have warranted much ire. However, it's a little disappointing to be hit with an opening cutscene that looks like a slideshow
  • With all the otherwise amazing environment and character design, it would be disappointing if the score didn't live up to the sights. Fortunately, it's even better than expected. The fully orchestral soundtrack is an absolute joy to listen to and lends a certain cinematic air to the proceedings. The Copenhagen Philharmonic Orchestra does a great job punctuating the narrative's varied emotional beats with anxious strings, thunderous percussion, and playful woodwinds

Story & Vibes

A-Tier worldbuilding, D-Tier writing

  • The setting of the tale is a mysterious realm known as The Forgotten Lands. Yes, the location uses the correct spelling of the word "forgotten", but the title doesn't. The setting itself is imaginative and interesting. Imagine if every little lost thing wound up somewhere after it left your memory. These things magically appear in The Forgotten Lands as sentient beings known as Forgotlings
  • Unfortunately, becoming a Forgotling doesn't ensure much respite for these neglected objects. As we see in the game's opening minutes, Forgotlings are immediately seized by the toadies of Master Bonku, one of the two human residents (Anne being the other) within the Forgotten Lands. They're then ominously led away to be "given purpose". While it's implied that they're being coerced into servitude, there's also the implication that something even more sinister is going on. Perhaps it's unsurprising that the plot kicks off with an uprising of a group of rebellious Forgotlings seeking to overthrow Master Bonku
  • You take the controls of Anne, Master Bonku's #1 enforcer and the game's protagonist. As the gears of the rebellion start turning, Bonku sends out Anne to figure out what's going on, who's responsible, and a way to restore order. If that sounds iffy, rest assured that it feels iffy too. Anne marches about to play Goebbels to Bonku's Hitler, smoothing things over with the populace and ensuring everyone that the forced labor is all above board. At Anne's disposal is the Arca, one of two powerful stones (Bonku possessing the other) capable of transferring energy between inanimate objects, including Forgotlings. As you may expect, yes, ripping the life-giving energy out of a Forgotling does, in fact, kill them
  • Fortunately, the plot puts the stupid-looking Fig in Anne's way. The blithe wooden doll serves as a foil for Anne's serious demeanor and misguided ambitions. He explains the rebellion's grievances and even leads her to Bonku's compound to reveal his evil plan for "saving" the Forgotlings. Unforuntately, Anne immediately has the world's least motivated breakdown, tells Fig that he doesn't have a soul, and storms off to take part in a plot development that actually helps her reconsider her position
  • For me, this juncture at the game's 2/3 mark encapsulates what's bad about the writing. Anne's freak-out seems to come entirely out of left field. I'm aware that Master Bonku is intended to be a father figure to Anne and that their bond is supposedly very close, but outside of a handful of tender interludes, it feels more like Anne is his employee than his daughter. We never see Bonku do anything redeeming besides occasionally being kind to Anne in flashbacks. In addition to failing to follow the boilerplate "show, don't tell" tenet for plot writing, the failure to make the antagonist sympathetic in any way makes Anne's emotional development arc appear unmotivated, confusing, and arbitrary. How can a decision be an existential conflict when one side is so clearly bad?

Playability & Replayability

Reposition, rinse, repeat

  • While the narrative featured some good ideas and a host of bad ones, the gameplay features very few ideas at all and none of them ever evolve. Most puzzle platformer veterans will be no stranger to sequencing puzzles (i.e., those that require following a series of steps to move platforms, lower ladders, unlock doors, etc. to move forward). That is the only type of puzzle that exists in Forgotton Anne. Every path-blocker you encounter will involve Anne using her Arca to view the energy hidden in the walls that runs between generators/batteries and the devices they power, moving that energy between different devices, and redirecting the flow of energy through wires/pipes by repositioning switches
  • These puzzles feel very stale by the time the credits roll. Even the infrequent changeups thrown into the puzzle solving "mix" are just abstracted sequence puzzles. I kinda realized that when I was moving pins around to set positions to unlock a door; it's the same positioning, blocking, and repositioning things like in the rest of the game, but without having to move Anne
  • As such, I'm not motivated at all to replay the game in spite of multiple endings and a few achievements I didn't grab. Especially when the binary ending choice only features one good option

Overall Impressions & Performance

At least it ran well

  • I've played a pretty high number of games featuring women in the leading roll over the past few years, and Anne stands out as being by far my least favorite protagonist of them all. At first blush, she seemed like a misguided but ultimately well-intentioned person who was being led astray by the father figure in her life. But after taking several hours to get to the point where it seems like she'll shake off her blinders and make the right choice, she never fully renounces Bonku's evil. She seeks an explanation from him; she doesn't explicitly want to stop him. In fact, you have the option not to stop him at all
  • Paired with Bonku barely being a character and more closely resembling a Power Rangers villain that pops up on a screen to move he plot along from time to time, the connection between he and Anne seems contrived at best. I'd rather just have a satisfying ending to a linear story than presenting me with the polar opposites of "save everyone" versus "genocide"
  • Like most puzzle platformers, the game ran well on the Steam Deck. I didn't notice any choppiness, crashes, or bugs
  • [/list]

    Final Verdict

5.0/10. It's really hard to decide where this falls in a binary "recommend/don't recommend" paradigm. With the intriguing world and amazing presentation, I initially thought I was going to love Forgotton Anne. Unfortunately, the protagonist is pretty unlikable and the puzzles only manage to increase in difficulty and not in ingenuity. If you're so enamored of the art that you can't physically stop yourself from adding this game to your wishlist, at least wait for a discount

One of the first games I ever bought for myself. I’ll never regret getting this game that one day I was sitting alone in my home, trying to think of something to do, nor will I ever forget the times where I would replay it late into the night.

Forgotten Anne is such a compelling story of a young girl who simply has no connection to the citizens of her world, and wholly believes that what she’s doing is right. Her story of connecting to these people and with two separate endings to depict her choices and beliefs in the game is simply amazing. She’s a moving character whose growth is stunning throughout the story. There were some bugs here and there, but no matter how much they bothered me, the game itself always felt worth it in the end.

a good story, the game unfortunately suffers from clunky controls and bugs, would have been way better as a visual novel.

story is good, there is a ghibli vibe going on and it's very charming. unfortunately game is super clunky and feels like developers half-assed it. platforming sections feel a pain in the ass because of it.

there were also plenty of bugs that i discovered. some are game breaking forcing you to go to the menu and start from the last save point. super annoying

it is a good but flawed game. would have worked better as a visual novel

Another game where ZERO testing was done. Who in their right mind, figures that the controls on this game are intuitive? The controls are either completely unresponsive, "lag" induced or backwards depending on your character situation vs. environment. The controls are built with a high "hit box" area thus not precise in the games design. And to top it off - movement, run, interaction, jump and flight are all centralized on the players right hand with NO option to reconfigure this to other keys. I will give credit to the puzzles, art and music being very well done, but the controls decimate any positives that this game might have had. At least the developers included the option to speed through dialog but NOT the option to have either the "sprint" or "flight" controls as a toggle. I will leave the game purchase/play-ability recommendation to your decision. If I feel that the game improves further down the line, then I will update the review to reflect this. For the time being I would rate the game around 5.5/10

In the first 10 minutes after finishing I was ready to file this game into the 5/5-Tier, that's how much I enjoyed the unique setting, animated-feature-film-quality presentation and storytelling and the delightfully oddball cast of anthropomorphic object NPCs, but after calming down a little, I remembered there are a few significant flaws in this game that need to be mentioned.

First of all, the genre-mix of adventure game and slow side-scrolling platforming with very old-school controls - think original 8-bit Prince of Persia to get an idea just how old-school and slow - immediately resonated with me since I'm always up for something a little out of the ordinary, but is pretty much guaranteed to irritate others who want their adventures to be point-and-click and their platformers to be Super Mario. I personally often struggled to remember the eccentric button layout for the game controller, leading to a couple more missed jumps and accidental triggering of (in-game) buttons than I would have liked.

Then there's the inconsistent difficulty of the puzzles, all centered around engines and mechanisms encountered during the game and the player character's ability to either inject or draw power from them across a short distance. Some are very straightforward, some require the player to correctly guess the exact mechanics behind them and if the player guesses wrong, there are no hints to get them unstuck.

The consistently gorgeous level design sometimes is so overloaded with detail that it becomes difficult to tell what is a platform or otherwise interactable object and what is part of the background. This is compounded by the fact that in some sections of the game, the levels extend to multiple side-scrolling layers, connected by things like stairs or bridges.

And finally there are problems with the game's sound mix: Individually, the voice acting, the sound effects and ambience and the music - performed by the Sjællands Symfoniorkester of Copenhagen, Denmark - are each top tier, but during the game they often end up stepping on each other, requiring the player to take a few trips to the settings menu to adjust the relative volumes, including during some dramatic key moments of the game.

Aside from these issues however, this game is the closest experience to an interactive top-tier anime in the magical realist style of Studio Ghibli I have had yet, and a scenario and story that match this vibe perfectly. There are two final endings, but many more branch points in the story that change dialogue and interactions with NPCs and yield one out of four possible tarot cards at the end (displayed in the save-game slot) that describe the personality that the player character exhibited in summary.

Another new personal all-time favorite of mine and a strong 4/5.
