So there we were, minding our own business in the forest. It was kinda idyllic, you know? Peace, happiness, harmony with nature, and OH YEAH, it was extra awesome because, get this, MY MOM IS A WITCH?! Well, I guess TECHnically she is, but she’s more like a Harry Potter witch than a creepy Witch Hazel type, ‘cause bless her heart, she always uses her powers for good. Anyway, she’s the best, but this is also exactly when things went wrong.
See, all of a sudden the king's guards show up, all stuffy and businesslike, and they say they’re taking my mom to the castle, and there’s nothing I can do about it. I mean, I was totally just like, “yeah right, narcs” and I snuck my way right in, but now there’s all these enemies to defeat and items to use and pets to get, and that’s only the tip of the iceberg!
Apparently, somewhere along the way, somebody else just straight up STOLE a goblin artifact, and now THEY’RE in the castle somewhere too, and the goblins are pissed so they’ve started attacking. Lucky for me, this is a co-op game as well, so I can get a friend to help me, but MAN! Goblin artifacts? Missing parents? A thief's agenda? I guess that’s just what happens when you're a... SON OF A WITCH!

The Heroes
Pick one of ten heroes with different starting weapons and items, as well as Melee, Magic and Archery skill levels:
Knight (melee combat specialist, starts with armor that reduces damage)
Sorceress (ranged magic attack, can create food to heal players)
Druid (ranged magic attack, can add poison effect to any weapon)
Pyromancer (shoot fireballs, immune to fire)
Archer (master of bow and arrows, start with additional inventory slot)
Skeleton Ranger (cannot eat nor drink, collects bones from fallen enemies to get stronger)
Barbarian (faster rage buildup for special melee attacks, unique weapon, higher magic spell cost)
Paladin (melee but knows some magic, has divine shield and does extra damage vs undead)
Alchemist (master of potions, summons a Golem minion to fight alongside)
Lich (uses life energy instead of mana which changes the game completely)
You can unlock characters by completing various quests in the game.
Items, weapons and loot
Boost your strength, magic and other abilities with new weapons, potions, scrolls and items you can discover on your adventure. Grab enemy weapons when they drop them or discover hidden treasure stashes. The game has over 130 items and weapons with different unique effects. Here are some of the items you can find:
Many items and weapons have synergies. Examples:
Drinking a Gold Diet potion allows you to eat gold, but if you find an Appetite potion as well it will boost the effect and enable you to restore a lot of health.
Voodoo Dolls allow you to hurt enemies from a distance, but if you combine it with a high-damage item like a Meteor Staff or a Bomb it can be devastating. The Celestial Smasher hammer does 200 damage per hit. If the enemy is standing over the voodoo doll he's marked with, you can do 400 damage in one hit. For some comparison, the first level boss has 700 HP. This means you could kill it in two hits if you time your attacks properly.
There's a status effect that boosts your stats when you have more gold. If you couple this with a Portable Foundry (turn any item into gold) and Avarice (multiply collected gold), you can become very powerful in a short amount of time.
There's a magic potion that increases your stomping damage. Couple that with a Horse pet that triples your stomp damage, and you can kill most enemies in one stomp. Now you just need a weapon that knocks them down. There are a couple of hammers with knockdown attack, or you can use the Violent Sword that has a dashing attack that knocks many enemies down and gives you full rage after every kill. So, you can sweep the enemies, stomp at least one of them to get a kill and thus full rage for another dash. Rinse and repeat until the room is clear.
Weapons also have synergies. For example, you can combine the Enchanter's Warbreaker hammer with the Snake Staff. Use the staff to poison all the enemies and once their health is low, kill them all with the Warbreaker and get many mana points. Mana can be used for more spells, creating potions, bombs and gold.
Another example, you can use the Rogue Sword and the Turret Staff for winning without much fighting. You can create an automated turret in the middle of the room and then use the rogue sword special ability to hide and just watch enemies getting decimated by the turret(s). With a couple of useful pets it can become a pacifist run: a bull (allows you to use the rogue sword in every battle without having to fight to build up rage) and a lizard (gain additional mana point after every battle) would allow you to only have to fight once in two battles.
Heroes with good archery skills can combine different bows and arrows, for example:
Hitting an enemy with an ice arrow would freeze it for a while, but after that passes, he will also be slow and much easier to fight against. Saving special arrows for bosses and difficult enemies is a good strategy.
Pets
Adopt one of 42 different pet companions. Each has a different effect. The Penguin freezes enemies. The Ram knocks them down. The Bat attacks in the air. The Chicken shows you the path with least enemies. The Dog fetches hard to reach items and weapons. The Turtle acts as an unbeatable decoy and the Bird's feathers improve your archery skill. If you find a Wolf to lead the pack and keep them in order, you can adopt multiple pets at the same time.
Always more to explore
The game has permadeath. Once you die, you start a new game. A different world is created on each playthrough. The layout of the levels is different, there are different numbers and types of enemies; and different treasures and items sold in shops. There are many spells the characters can use, and archers have a wide assortment of special types of bows and arrows at their disposal. Because of this, each new game poses a new challenge. You will get a subset of weapons, items and enemies and might need to use a different strategy. Any two subsequent plays could be quite different.
Various ways to complete levels
There's a big boss at the end of each level. You can beat him up with a melee weapon, petrify him with Medusa Arrows, or use a magic scroll to simply skip the battle and run to the next level.
If you don't have enough money to buy weapons from shops, you can loot it if you can beat the shop's guard. Or you can just steal things and use a bomb or an Escape scroll to run off.
Enemies drop usable items and weapons often which you can then use against them. For example, the Necromancer drops a staff that allows you to raise undead as your servants. This includes raising some of the undead bosses as your allies. If you defeat the king, you can take his scepter, allowing you to summon an army of armored guards to help you.
Monsters and bosses
The final game plays over eight areas: forest, battlements, the keep, dungeon, catacombs, desert, hell and the frozen mountain. Each area has three or more specific bosses that randomly show up on different play-throughs.
Each area also has a different set of enemies, separated into the following factions:
Goblins
King's Guards
Thieves
Undead (skeletons, zombies, vampires)
Ice Mountain Clan
Desert Mercenaries
Demons
Animals (wild boars and dragons you can ride, bugs that drop weapon upgrades, bats, hornets, etc.)
Each faction has regular units and special ones that are bigger and harder to beat. Like this barbarian that the shop keepers like to hire for security:

It's a good idea but felt poorly executed. The biggest problem for me is the inventory system. You have to scroll through up to 30 items one by one in order to find one you're looking for, and that's if you can remember what each icon does in the first place. For the first half of the game, I found myself scrolling through my inventory between battles and dropping items on the ground just to remember what they did. By the second half of the game, I just started ignoring most of my items except for one or two that I actively used—which also meant I didn't care about any new items I picked up. It felt clunky in the tutorial and just got clunkier as the game went on.
There were other problems—and good things too!—but this issue colored the whole experience for me.
Fun game, lots to do if you're a completionist, challenging, and very satisfying to mow down enemies once you're powered up. Muahahahaha! Also, halloween mode is fun. :-)
I can feel the Dev trying to make my life harder though out the whole game play.
80% of the items you loot from the chests are either useless or harmful. And the rest 20%, half of them are not design for your class.
The shop doesn't refresh in the endless mode, and when you buy out all the goods, the vendor will give you a VIP coin, guess what this coin will do? it will just freaking teleport you to the entrance of the shop.
This game could be a great game if the Dev spend a little bit more effort trying to make players feel happy instead do all those works trying to frustrating the players.
Came across this while looking for a combo co-op game (local and online simultaneously) for me and my wife to play with friends in another state and it does not disappoint! Game nights playing this with them are always a good time!
Great rogue-like, various modes that can make it fun and casual or very challenging. Similar style to Rampage Knights with a little more depth in the weapons, combat, spells, potions, power ups etc
It's a mix of Binding of Issac and Castle Crashers in all the best ways. I've rarely seen a game with this much versatility in gameplay.
Normal gameplay is a rogue-like where you pick a base class and explore a randomly generated map and accumulate randomized power ups. It manages to be fun and challenging in both in single player and multi-player modes.
The RPG mode gets rid of the "one life" and "limited inventory" challenges of the Rogue-like mode so you can enjoy your progress and try out different combinations of items.
The Party Mode is a faster paced side-scrolling beat-em-up very much like Castle Crashers.
The core gameplay mechanics are solidly fun, and the sheer number of randomized items and unlockables makes for a ton of replay value. After 30 hours of play and countless individual games, I'm still discovering items I've never seen before, and learning new tricks.
Melee combat is the usual "light attack, special attack" stuff you see in most beat-em-ups, with the "use item" button serving as healing, power ups, special weapons, or magic, depending on what you're carrying. Ranged combat uses twin-stick shooter controls. Being able to switch between melee and ranged weapons with a tap of a shoulder button means you aren't locked into a particular combat style based on your character choice at the start of the game.
Highly recommended. This one is worth paying full price for.
one of the most fun games i have played since ps2 games many challenges and hard to get burnt out on many playable charters and my have to change strategy on the fly depending on what random things you receive all around amazing game 10/10 would buy again
Endless fun and frustration. Love this game so much I bought it again on steam for online co-op. If you enjoy feeling like a god one round and a frail fledgling the next, then this game may be for you.
Originally, I found this game on the the Nintendo store while browsing for local multiplayer games I could enjoy with my kids. I was drawn to it due to the above but also due to ts great art style and the randomness each game offered. Being an avid Diablo fan going on decades, this really appealed to me.
My three girls and I have a blast playing this and there are not a lot of buttons to remember so the basics are easy to pick up for younger children. I have beaten barbarian challenges with my 3 year old and shes even saved me! Although her favorite is the Alchemist so technically her "friend" saved me.
I repurchased this early this year, when I notices the new update was available on PC ahead of the switch, as we were excited to play the new content. I also wanted to support Bigosaur as I have amassed close to 500 hours across platforms enjoying this great game.
The game itself is different each and every time you play. There are several game modes, ranging from very easy and straightforward to pvp, an endless wave arena, additional challenges and even a hard mode if you find all of that too easy. Most characters will need to be unlocked through special quests or challenges which also entices you to keep replaying.
This is definitely a game where you either adapt to changing circumstances or suffer the consequences. You won't always find a scroll of identify lying around to ID each and every potion and scroll. This can be disastrous, especially later on. The same goes for what items you choose to bring with you between levels. There are many paths to victory but there are just as many ways to screw it up!
I'd love to see additional content even if its not a priority. I've heard rumors around a far east update while picking up the extra skins (which I recommend) through Exilians forum. That would be great! I feel like this game doesn't receive the recognition it deserves. Most of the negative comments seem to be from people that find the game too simple and boring and have played less than an hour. Everyone has different tastes though.
I think the issue with hit boxes isn't the game, its people not realizing that each melee weapon has different lengths and requires different positioning. Enemies too close to the doors? Try the overdrive barbarian challenge. If you played more you'd learn how not to die to these things! Using mana uses all of your mana? Find the mana canteen! Bosses all the same? They all have unique attacks and abilities. I started to dislike this game after I bought it due to the perceived difficulty I was encountering but the more you play it, the more you'll grow to love it. Then hate it all over again but still love it.
This is one of the best games I have ever played. I have yet to not find a replay enjoyable. My wife and I enjoy playing co-op games together. Some like Portal 2 are brilliant, but not replayable. Others are replayable. The developer is still putting time into the development of this game as well. We love this game, and would do a lot to make sure that development continues. So many games try to suck every last dollar from you. This game stands apart.
My roommate is in love with this game and it has its own certain charms. Recommended for those who like a bit of casual fun that can easily become a deep and engrossing rougelike. It has casual appeal and aesthetics for all ages while is capable of being a tough as nails gamer's game with a wide variety of modes and replayability.
Funny little Beat em up, with some light RPG Elements and some nice dungeon crawling, best be played with some friends.
The art style is cute, and the game has a lot of potential to be fun with some interesting designs, but I'm afraid the bad outweighs the good.
Most fun I had with this game was cheating at it. It's short when you can actually complete it, but rife with problems, poor balancing, disconnected randomization that makes half the items you can pick up worthless, non-existent AI pathing, and debuffs that will almost completely cripple your gameplay even with friends, and hitboxes that are questionable at best, either being pixel-precise or ridiculously generous. Seeds also tend to favor one playstyle or another, never really having balance, which can be incredibly awkward when you and a friend are playing an archer and a mage but then get almost nothing but melee weapons and upgrades.
Boss battles also tend to be wildly unbalanced, either being laughably easy and easy to cheese, or completely unfair by first stunlocking you then doing massive damage you can't escape, and enemies have a solid chance of spawning entirely at the only entrance to a room and body-blocking you as the only means of escape are locked, and then themselves stunlocking you with fast attacks you cannot escape.
Also: Mounts will mess with your character's height, resulting in misleading hitboxes that don't line up with projectile animations.
Overall, this game feels untested, unbalanced, unrefined, and like a college game design project. If you have a gambling addiction, this game might be for you, because it's almost entirely based on randomization.
It's a great game with many unique and interesting aspects. I like the addition of an RPG mode, along with regular, for a mixture of roguelike and RPG elements, which is more my style. It's good that there are many different playstyles and characters, with a broad range of swords, bows and staves. I'd recommend this game if you're short on money and want a good time-consumer.
There are better games like this in the same vein..... Rampage Knights or Lost Castle as examples.
A few things about this game seems to be completely broken. Using a spell consumes all your mana, even if you have 100 mana, it just all goes away in one casting. The enemies and bosses aren't varied, bosses are just the same giant creature with same attacks but different skins. Managing and navigating the inventory is cumbersome.
I really wanted to like this one, but my friend and I stopped playing it after 5 runs....
My wife and I picked this up and had a blast with it! Just enough depth to keep you interested and the combat pace isn't too frantic. If you're looking for some light beat-em-up fun, this is for you!
I love rogue-like games and this game is no different. So far i have about 12 hours and have had no two play throughs the same. It is a fun and challenging game. The archer is my favorite class and I cannot wait to play through with a team of 4 so I can dominate the campaign with my friends! 10/10 would recommend as a fun game to play with your friends for such a good price! Good stream and Lets play material! I don't do reviews but this game deserves so much more recognition!
I thought this game would be fun, like Castle Crashers or Lost Castle.
However after playing awhile I found that it is unfair and unwinable (there needs to be a casual, normal, hard setting. Yes I know unfair is subjective, but in this game there are too many ways to die with no way to correct it.
You can be poisened (does not wear off until you have 1 hit point.)
You can be petrified by being hit one time with a certain sword (unavoidable game ender)
You can get tetanus from one hit of a rusty weapon (does not wear off,no easy way to cure)
Also the enemies can (in later rounds) fire incredibly fast unavoidable magic and hit combos
You can be variously cursed with no way to get rid of them except one potion that you may never see in the game
And if playing multiplayer and your partner dies a countdown starts and you must clear all enemies in that time or game is over...UNHEARD OF!
Solutions to make the game worth playing and coming back to are:
1. Having different levels of difficulty
2. A way to dodge or roll
3. Speed up the Archer 3 seconds to fire one arrow that must be exactly on target without them moving is not good
4. Having poison wear off like fire does
5. Get rid of the death countdown in multiplayer or have an ability to revive your partner (not just if by chance you have a
special wand and enough mana to use it)
I bought this game during early access.
Hopefully changes and tweaks are still coming to make this a fun game you will want to keep playing
***Update*** The developers have created a new "RPG mode" which does let you have a fighting chance to win the game. Also they have continued to add new characters. I have changed my review from thumbs down to thumbs up. Hopefully additional levels, weapons or other content is in the near future.
This game reminds me of Rampage Knight. The best rogue like game of them all. And this is almost as good. At first i thought it was garbage and that the music was annoying. But the game is Soo much more and better then it will make you believe at first. Now i just cant stop playing.
I really like this game, almost to an addiciton level.
It's also a great game to play with the wife, since it has pets and it's cute.
But it's a hard one! You die a lot, it's really difficult to complete some of the quests, and it's really poorly balanced. Playing with a team is easier, but still really hard.
I can't wait for this to be a bit more balanced, and to be able to maybe save progress? Would love to see more charachters as well
