Vagante epitomizes the concept of "difficult for the sake of difficulty,"
which wouldn't be a problem if that didn't coincide with, "if a glitch nudges you one pixel too far, your progress is gone through no fault of your own." And even THAT wouldn't be such a big deal if progression weren't so pathetically, agonizingly slow. Unfortunately, getting through the first few areas is almost entirely RNG; without proper gear, you're going to die a lot. This is important because progressing toward your next unlock depends on your "score," an amalgam of gold accrued, enemies killed, etc. So if you die in the first area, you get maybe 5-10 points. And you need hundreds of points to unlock anything.
And that's... not fun. That's kind of my whole point here.
Some games toe the line between difficulty and enjoyment, whereas Vagante dives headfirst onto the wrong side. I don't know why a game developer would make a game this hard without first weeding out the run-ending bugs. If your product is a chainsaw, you better make damn sure that it goes in the direction of the tree and not in the person operating it. Same principle.
All that said, I like the art style and the music a lot. It's a cool concept with bad execution. I stuck it out on that basis alone, trying to give this game a chance, but all I did was screw myself out of a refund.
It's not fun. Play something else.
instant-death traps are not a fun vector of difficulty.
Spelunky as a Roguelike with classes. It's quite fun, but also quite difficult. Though, it feels fair, like you kind of understand "Yeah, I deserve that" Most of the time.
yes
Genuinely overlooked roguelite with a fleshed out levelling system and all of the cruel-but-fair fun of games like Spelunky. This game has a charm that is both addicting and infectious; every secret mechanic you and your friends discover is a euphoric revelation in itself, and is best enjoyed without outside information.
Pretty good game. Pisses me off. Wildling having negative range is always a fast track to death, and not knowing how to change spell targets makes Wizard eat shit against minion bosses. Fun time overall.
This game is amazing: basically Spelunky plus…. side scrolling Diablo? Runs perfectly on the Steam Deck. I have no idea why this isn’t a multi-million megahit. The polish is incredible.
One of my favourite roguelikes hands down. Great classes, amazing loot, a great difficulty that inspires careful consideration, and can support 4 people locally or online. WHAT. Insaneeee value for a $15 game.
My only gripe with this game is its later levels lean on more and more bullshit as its "difficulty". It really sucks to play your heart out for 30min-45min only to die to an enemy that can oneshot you from full hp. This bullshit is manageable with items and loot, but getting those items can be a matter of luck. This is the only un-fun play-pattern in this game.
most underrated roguelike
Goated game
love it
It's fun and enjoyable even if the difficulty is absurdly difficult and annoying. I've never beaten it in full and wish everything wasn't so insanely hard but I've had fun with it in full, especially when playing with a friend or two.
Pretty cool game
it's hard, very hard. If dying to spikes and boulders more than enemies isn't fun to you then starting out is not going to be fun. The movement is a little clunky and some of the classes are way more fun than others, but overall I feel there's something really rewarding about this brick wall with a smirk. the levelling between stages feels very balanced with each characters unique skills complimenting their own gimmick, but none of the characters really stand out to me as super different. sure some play styles require a lot more skill to carry off, but you're always at the mercy of loot rng and boss spawn rng. some of the easiest bosses can shunt you into a spike and insta kill you, that mushroom *extreme french* can go to hell with his bounce bounce bounce actually homing missile of 40 damage to the face. But, like crack (and the beatles) it grows on you and the boshiz gets manageable when you can determine what rooms will get you killed in because that boss sat there just knows that wall will be your best friend and final resting place
great game
It is an excellent game for pixel art enjoyers. If you have an SO, family member, or friend to play with, it helps the game come alive through funny moments, challenging bosses, and one health and a dream campsite saves. The game itself is demanding, with many interactions you will have to learn along the way.
yes
Great game
it's a good rogue-like with rpg elements, it clearly takes a bit of inspiration from games like spelunky, but not in an overbearing way, it is still very unique and has plenty of content to mess around with, all the different classes have their own abilities and stats, and each level has an optional bossfight that gives you the levels to invest in your class's skills
I do recommend this game despite its difficulty and level generation sometimes screwing you over (bosses spawning in very cramped rooms you can't possibly figh them, happened with me once or twice)
vagante
Could be a fun game if it didn't try to artificially inflate difficulty by making controls extremely obtuse and unnecessarily complex for a PC game (that tries to be a controller game (with zero controller support apparently)).
Rebinding controls is even worse? Because it'll suddenly have weird controls like F for next tab?? And numpad 0 for previous tab???
You know what I really enjoy? Struggling for a whole minute to switch spells and enchant them on myself.
Everything is great...except for the...BOULDERS
Can't really remap any of the controls or you get stuck on the starting screen, would've loved to try it but the default controls were just bad for kbm :(
I tried to kill spike. Spike killed me. Not good.
Fun with friends
No mouse support
Beat it, hated it,
10/10, would instant die to some random spikes again.
PS. Acolyte of Chaos my beloved.
worst controls i have ever seen. this is a game that was clearly a shit project from college. waste of money
the game is like a mix between spelunky and Caveblazers. If you played any one of them then you know how challenging and grindy it can be.
Frankly I like this game much more than any of those 2.
played solo as a mage:
* after 20-30 hours finally got the equipment which I got to hold briefly during the tutorial.
The items you will see in the tutorial... just dont expect to get them right away. Its more like a virtual carrot for you to keep playing than a fair demonstration on what you will get on your first run(s).
* The main boss on each level is RNG. I swear, on most of my runs I get garbage spells like dash, but as soon as I switch to other classes like rogue - I immediatly start getting powerful attack spells.
"Here's a dash spell, now go and defeat that golem that stands behind the corner. I trust in you bro!"
So you always fight to make most of the worst.
Havent played local co-op yet. Supposedly it supports 4 player so should be good.
Endless replay. Every run is unique. Unwritten story arises from circumstance.
I gifted this game to many friends and now I'm poor, worth it
Loved this game, it's kinda wild it never got a bigger audience but it feels like a genuinely successful translation of the feeling of classic fantasy RPG-ing into a roguelike world, and I've played it for nearly a decade now?
Get it, it's hard, but if you take it slow you'll almost certainly have a good time!
Good game. Play fun. Challenge hard. Brain hurt.
The game feels like the incarnation of school trivia: it is unfair and unforgiving, but by God is it fun! however I would recommend it only for all hardcore lovers out there, it is not for casual players.
game is GOAT, hidden gem. Trust me, worth it
good pixel game, challeguing and pog
this game is so good
This game just doesn't do it for me, its so punishingly difficult and you unlock things but they are completely useless. I wish you actually leveled up and got stronger. I really wish I could refund this trash
This game is super fun and challenging
Really cool
this is one of those games that will last through the ages, I hope to see a Vagante 2 at some point in time, definitely get this game and give it a play :)
My All-time favourite Rogue-like.
Extremly frustrating and punishing game, yet it rewards experienced players like no other games in this genre.
Get a friend to play with it, it's one hell of a ride, especially on hard mode.
legendary game
Fun lil rouge like, if you're looking for a nice game to chip away at, this it
spikes
It's a really good game def worth being played in 2024. It gets even better if you have friends (4player local or online co op) to play with.
It's like spelunky but with RPG elements. It has that great mix of being difficult but makes you feel incredible once you start a good run and progress beyond where you've previously reach
This is a brutal dungeon crawler with a pretty high skill floor, but quite rewarding for those that stick with it. There's almost always something you can learn to do better, and even 60 hours, in, I'm still learning fun new builds, even on characters I thought I wouldn't like. Giving this one a conditional recommend, if you've got a co-op group that can take a few beatings and get back up for more, you'll love Vagante.
This is likely my favorite game, the game is atmospheric, its engaging, its fast paced, it has so many builds and play-styles, and most of all its just really fun, its hard don't get me wrong and you sure as hell will die but you'll get up and go strait back into the dungeon. 10/10
My friends should play this game with me :(
A+ game
It hard but good
