Enjoyed the puzzles!
Simple puzzle game with a great color scheme. Good for a quick casual play.
Perfect Fit - Totemland is an extremely minimalist puzzle game. It's severely lacking in variety and challenge so I don't generally recommend this game.
Gameplay
Take a look at the screenshots and notice how the layout of the puzzle area looks exactly the same in each screenshot: a square grid flanked by another square grid on each of its 4 sides. Every level, a number of coloured blocks or groups of blocks appear in the grids. When you click on any of the blocks, they slide towards the center grid and stay there. You need to click the blocks in the correct order so as to fill up the center grid.
At the end of each level, you're awarded up to three stars (one star gets knocked off for each time you clicked the undo button) and a score (depending on your completion time). The game features a level select menu that comes in handy to revisit levels in order to increase your star count or your score.
Perfect Fit - Totemland was clearly designed for mobile devices and it does seem adequate for wasting a few minutes in a waiting-room or on a bus or a train. But as a PC game it falls short. In the first couple of levels you're introduced to all of the very few different types of blocks. After that, the gameplay stays the same for the remaining 300 levels.
There isn't really a difficulty curve either, as each level just shows you a slightly different configuration of blocks to start with, whereas the grid and the mechanics don't change at all after the tutorial levels.
On the plus side, the music is basic but tolerable, which is especially nice to know if you intend to sit through all of Perfect Fit - Totemland's 310 levels.
Story
Perfect Fit - Totemland tries to add a story to the puzzling but falls flat in that area. The 'story' is limited to some ridiculous notions about the blocks being trolls and er… I'm not sure what they're trying to tell the player, really. Also, the few lines of 'narrative' are full of language errors. The first line of text reads: "Whats going on? Who disturb me?" so two mistakes in 6 words. And it doesn't get any better after that.
On Steam's extra features
Perfect Fit - Totemland has 6 Steam Trading Cards. You'll get 3 while running the game.
The 11 Steam Achievements are awarded for:
- completing the tutorial
- completing 50, 150 & 310 levels
- gathering 200, 450 & 930 stars
- clicking the 'Undo' button 20, 75 and 150 times (yes, really!)
[*] starting the game a second time (yes, really!)
The store page claims Perfect Fit - Totemland features Steam Leaderboards but that information appears to be wrong. Either the developer/publisher forgot to set the leaderboards to 'publicly visible', which wouldn't be a first, or something else is wrong.
The problem with this one is that it's very, very, very, very, very, VERY casual puzzle game. This is the type of game you play when you travel by train and have to kill a few minutes. On desktop this is too casual, too easy and too bland. By it on mobile and go ride a train.
I struggled with this, Id probably give it a neutral rating if I could, and on sale Id definitely give it a go. Its simple, but solidly built puzzle game where you throw blocks in to a central square to fill it up.
Music is servicable, there is a story to it of sorts but with hilariously awful translation, graphically its fine, and it controls well enough.
It has a lot of levels, but they go past very rapidly. (Ive finished the game with all achievements and quite some idle time and apparently that was still only 2.5hours.) There are a few trickier ones but it never gets satisfyingly challenging. I wouldnt say it wasnt fun while it lasted, it just doesnt hold up for any length of time.
Really the major problem here is variety. It feels like the game has thrown damn near every configuration of blocks its possible to put in with a grid of this size, but they are all much the same thing. The blocks come in only 3 varieties that are all introduced fairly early on, and pink blocks rarely show up and are a little frustrating when they are used. I worked those levels out fast enough but it felt more like I was more guessing than using any skill. Meanwhile the level grid only really varies once with a small increase in size that makes levels less trivial to pass. (Ignoring the earlier increase of size from 2x2 to 3x3 because 2x2 is only really useful for a tutorial.)
It needs more mechanics, perhaps more different blocks, maybe some blocks on the grid that do things as you drop on to them, something to keep your interest.
Perhaps my expectations are rather high, but I have a lot of small games in this price range and I think there needs to be more here to be worth passing many of them over to get this.
(Also, and an annoyingly common theme with a lot of games these days. It appears to lack some basic menu functions like windowed mode.)
It's kind of like Tetris, but not exactly with the traditional pieces. Basically have to fill the center square up by putting the pieces in the correct order. Most levels are not too difficult to see how the solution plays out.
