Not really woth your time. Skills are redundant to the point of repeating, combat is almost entirely avoidable, and upgrade system was poorly tested and balanced

Vzerthos is an interesting mixture of top-down shooter and action RPG, but neither the shooter elements nor the RPG elements are really quite there enough, and I think I spent more time beating on walls trying to find secrets than I did with anything else in the game. It's not a *terrible* game, the worst I can say being that the controls are somewhat awkward for the type of high-action game it wanted to be, but it was also just never more than okay.
For the RPG elements, the only advancement is through items and buying new things from the store. That said, you still feel much more powerful at endgame than at the beginning of the game... but you also use the base weapons a lot, because you never really get the ammo capacity to really go hard with your ranged weapons.
For the shooter elements, there's not really much that can't be solved without any real difficulty, either just with sword hit-and-runs, or by things like bouncing shots from around a corner, and Vzerthos can carry a giant stock of potions for the few times he can't just avoid danger.
So yeah, not recommended. It's not awful, though, and is at least decently fun sometimes during the 3 hour playtime.
So, first of all I have to do a big, big mea culpa because I'm coming super late posting this: I played this game in 2019, then posted a positive feedback in its forum, also I promised a positive review back then, but I unfortunately forgot to post it, so: sorry @DarkDes!
Vzerthos: Heir of Thunder is a really good indie game that scratches that Diablo I/Nox need I always had since my teen age.
Well built dungeons with plenty of secret rooms and enemies to fight with a good array of skills, all RPG elements are simple but effective. Probably newer generations of players might complain about a lot of things but, for me that happened to be there when the whole isometric RPG era came alive, this game hit the old action/rpg mark so well that I felt a pang of nostalgia while playing it.
It has to be said that Vzerthos is a pretty short game, but it leaves you willing for more and more!
Stumbling on a new update today 11/07/2022 brought back to me the hope DarkDes will develop new chapters of this well made, little game.
That said if you, like me, always crave about this genre, buy Vzerthos and enjoy it as I did: even if a bit short, the cheap price definitely makes up for it!
I had to think a while on whether to give this thumbs up or down. In the end, I went with a positive review as I experienced no bugs, found the gameplay enjoyable enough, the game didn't outstay it's welcome, and it's pretty cheap. On the other hand, this isn't the kind of thing I'd go out and encourage people to play.
This game will definitely keep you in check. Good luck!
To start off this game is just as good as what you see in the trailer. Even though it was really pixely it still looked very nice. But the plot had a lot of hole, some parts where incredibly confusing, and it was quite a bit expensive. But like was saying earlier, the gameplay was so good and the graphics looked so amazing that it tends to cover over those 2 issues. So i would recommend this game but not by much.
7/10 Diablo clone
Worth the price.
Nice game but it's not for me. The presentation is a bit lacking.
When I started the game and heard word "Vzerthos" and saw UI animation I was immediately blown away how this game hold oldshool style. I don't know how it's called, it's like a PC game from the 90s. Music is so cool with the distinctive sound of old bad sound card's internal synthesizer, and I really love good soundtracks. I've died a couple of times before I even met any enemy, later on checkpoints help a lot. I'm in the beginning of the journey, but clearly it's worth a try.
Nice indie game.
Vanilla Diablo in the very youth. In early 90s)
Some nostalgie)
Vzerthos is a hybrid of a mouse-and-keyboard shooter and ARPG. The levels are all hand-crafted instead of randomly generated, and that's a good thing because the best part of the game is hunting down all the secrets. You have a pretty big arsenal of ranged and melee weapons you unlock and upgrade, and some slightly overpowered skills you can buy with all that money you'll get finding secrets. Secrets are also the only way to upgrade your HP max and mana max/regen so going back to previous areas to clean them up once you get more abilities is as advisable as it is fun.
The game starts out a little slow since you only have access to a sword which means tricky dancing to avoid trading hits with the early enemies, but once you get the first ranged weapon it picks up, and it picks up even more as your options expand. The combat is generally very good, although if you're not used to doing the melee reach shuffle close quarters might be frustrating. Enemies do respawn but they generally don't drag revisits out much, mostly because you can outdistance them to deaggro if you don't want to fight, and you can even drag them into hazards to let the level take care of them for you. Those hazards are far and away the biggest threat in most stages, as the damage you take stacks up incredibly quickly, and incautious movement can leave you dead in seconds.
The game is short but extremely replayable, and you'll get even more out of it if you go back and try to find all the secrets. Thankfully the minimap tells you how many you have left in each map, and even better, you get a cash bonus for getting all of them in each map. Most involve finding suspicious walls and blowing them open, but there are a few later that require some puzzling [remember to experiment with your new weapons]. There's even a fast travel system to let you zoom around to the upgrade merchants, old dungeons you want to clear, and back to your current progress in a snap.
Vzerthos is a great pickup for quick, fun replays, and the comic-book style cutscenes are super charming.
Boring "Diablo like" game, which seems to be badly made - graphic, gameplay and control wise. Also, the story is badly written with glaring grammatical/spelling mistakes.
the game is clunky and the interface is more than dated yes BUT it is fun and the atmosphere is quite cool !
I first played with a ps4 controller with the sword, the mouse pointer was messing up the downside attack of the screen as it detailed my stats while i was trying to hit a mob, didn't really care even though it was annoying.
Then i got the 2nd weapon which is ballistic, that's when i switched to play with the keyboard yet I didn't care.
That's to tell you how interesting that game is, it is experimental at times and clunky for some other things, yet i'm interested in playing through the end in order to see the full clunkiness of the game.
Btw, the music is really cool :p.
I can't wait to see what the devs are up to if they do an upgraded version or a followup.
I think I paid about 5-6 euros, that was worthy, one has to acknowledge the work.
Most people compare this do Diablo, but I don't see too much of a resemblance in the gameplay. There are no XP levels, no skill tree, no inventory, no comparing different equipment stats... Instead, I feel it's more like Hammerwatch. Only not as good. I think the graphics are pretty poor and the game is riddled with bugs and bad design decisions. Not one single thing, but lots of small things that add up and make you feel like the game is amateurish. It's not a horrible game, but I can't really recommend it.
Plays like a half-completed game.
Combat is boring. I gave it 20 minutes and it bored me to tears.
Short version... Buy this on sale.
This is not a BAD game but it could be a lot better.
Enemies in the first hour of the game all look very similar and come in exclusively three types. Melee, crossbow and a small melee guy. Are there other enemies later on? I hope so but I’m not that far in.
The controls are just barely tricky enough that the bit of zig zagging between lava pools is a minor challenge.
The plot is basic but feels like you are jumping in somewhere in the middle. However, the bit of exposition at the beginning is all you will see of the plot in the first hour of the game so that bits not so bad.
It does get a bit repetitive after a while. Wander maze killing small groups of baddies. Push box on button or in front of traps. Get locked in square room and fight off a larger group of the same baddies. Thus far that's about it. I can forgive the basic level art work if the game is engaging. But I'm already getting bored with it. That’s why I’m reviewing it with only the limited time I’ve put into it. I’m not sure I care enough to play much further. So, there you go.
On the plus side lots of baddies to kill. You get stuff on a moderately regular basis. I've found two new weapons thus far and am only about an hour in.
If I had to guess I'd say this was one of the devs early works. It does seem like something one could do with Stencyl or a similar program.
Final analysis is the question is "Do you recommend this." No. "Would I recommend NOT purchasing this?" Also no. But that's not the question the store page asks of reviewers. I bought this on sale and am not unhappy. But If I'd paid the full $7 I'd probably not have been quite so pleased with myself or it.
Vzerthos: The Heir of Thunder is a mixture of isometric RPG and top-down shooter. I like the soundtrack which I assume is a DOOM tribute. Well, what else an angry face in the middle would reference to ;). Basically, the gameplay feels like Diablo with WASD controls, very similar to NOX. Although the actual RPG elements are very simplified in favor of a more skill oriented gameplay. Overall I thought the game was decent if you can adapt to a rather quick movement. Actually, if you go to options and zoom out it makes the game feel a lot better in my opinion. I personally found Vzerthos very nostalgic because of all the references in style, music, and gameplay.
Game length is about 3-4 hours on average. Dungeons have plenty of secrets and achievements if that is something you like to grind. You do have to use your brain a little to solve some basic puzzles like moving boxes on pressure pads. Over the course of the story, you will get a good variety of weapons with unique mechanics. Plus you get a couple of fun spells. There is not much of a loot system besides some passive bonuses. World area is split into 4 major sections which differentiate in enemies and environment. For a budget title, I thought each part of the gameplay was mostly sufficient.
Pros:
+nostalgic soundtrack & gameplay
+big variety of weapons
+lots of secret areas
+good balance between action and puzzles
+easy way to navigate once you have access to warp area
+decent pixel art considering small team
Cons:
-relatively short
-bugs are not uncommon
-average gamer may find it a little too easy
-the movement was not very gradual
-slightly confusing objectives
Final Thoughts 7/10
This game relies a lot on nostalgia for old-school games. I found it rather amusing to hear some soundtrack parodies of my favorite titles. It is not the best top-down shooter out there but at the very least I think it justified the low price.

Fun game! It is both nostalgic and original. If the tags and screenshots interest you; you will probably like it.
Fun play. Accidentally fell in the lava pit a few times and got caught in a couple doorways, but 10/10 would pointlessly die again. This reminded me of some of my favorite arcade games; I felt refreshed while playing this.
a strange top/down action game.
bad controls, bad graphics... uninstalled it
This is one of those games you start and are a bit apprehensive about. It's not a AAA, or a indie studio with 10 veterans, but rather 1 or 2 guys who have made a really nice, diamond in the rough.
Are there bugs, I've run across 2 map out-of-bound issues, that I reported and the dev was really responsive. Every time I start it up, I end up playing for a while.
It's like Zelda meets Diablo. Constant progression, and a good pace of unlocking new abilities and weapons make this a really enjoyable experience. Once you get past your starting equipment you will start to feel more and more powerful, which is nice. It's also easy to go back and get secrets you may have missed.
It's easily worth the $6.99 ($6.29) on sale right now.
