Game might be good but the lack of control customization (forcing WASD or a controller) for a precision platformer makes no sense. Can't get invested.
So I'll start by saying: this game is really neat. I love the concept behind it, and when the game works it works brilliantly. The problem with the game is that it seriously hurts your hands. I want to finish this game and recommend it, but I get such horrible hand cramps from playing it that I just can't. Note that my controller is an 8Bitdo SN30Pro+ and wavedashing with this game's control scheme doesn't feel viable. I wish there was an accessibility option to add an "easy wavedash" option. Just a button you can hold that automatically wavedashes. You can kinda recreate this with Steam Input but an official method would be great.
Very fun and unique 2d platformer mostly built around speedrunning. Can take a little to get used to the movement but it feels very fluid and enjoyable when you do.
Very fun game if you enjoy the movement freedom of wave dashing. Don't worry if you can't wave dash yet. You'll learn quickly.
Movement can be hard, but once you get the hang of it, it's very satisfying.
Quick score: 4/5
Notes: Fun platformer with smashbros style wavedash movement. A bit unintuitive so it may take a while before you are really comfortable with the controls, but once you get it its fun. Only thing keeping it from being a 5/5 is the lack of adequate tutorials within the game.
great movement, pretty good skill curve. easy to learn hard to master type thing, which i am in love with.
Wavedash practice the game. Now my fox is going to be 20% better :)
-= 5.8/10=-
Well worth the $5 dollars for an amazing yet underrated platformer. Its amazingly well controllable with both keyboard and controller, so the choice is yours
The single best 2d platformer i've ever experienced. it's movement combines basic and easy to learn tools into complex and rapid-fire motions that are ever so satisfying to execute, and it's emphasis on exploration makes it's world more immersive. i love this game.
The year is 20XX, where all Melee players have to speed run this game against each other to determine the winner of a set.
A very unconventional platformer for people who want to try something new.
Movement is based on momentum with a number of abilities and tricks available for different situations, all of them difficult to master.
It has gamecube controller support if you have a mayflash adapter, game feels great with a gamecube controller.
(also if you're downvoting this game because wavedashing is too hard for you please get out. Or buy a gamecube controller and mayflash adapter.)
(also this game is unplayable without a gamecube controller.)
But yeah, it's just like melee wavedashing, super fun.
I first saw this game when it was a kickstarter title and was interested in it
Now that I've finally got to play it I can definitely say this game would be good
If it wasn't omnidirectional
This game is based off the air dodge system in Melee, and I am an avid melee player, and this game is simply too inaccurate for me. Wavelands and jumps don't respond, making the game's style element completely frustrating. In melee depending on where your control stick is, you can get a closer or farther wavedash, in this game, if your control stick is aiming mostly downwards and you angle it up slightly to be more towards down right, not even close to just the right input, the game will input that as a right input, completely messing up the wave dash or killing you. That small mechanic of the game inputing your control stick slide as a completely different direction completely ruins this game for me.
This game being omnidirectional is fine, but the way is handles inputs as either Down right, or right instead of what direction I'm actually pointing at completely ruins what would have been a great platformer.
This criticism isn't biased just because I play melee, it's simply because the game screws up what it tries to make original by changing what made wavedashing in melee unique and varied.
this game is actually just amazing.
phenomenal movement and amazingly designed levels, it really is a treat
the community is small but somewhat active, even if records aren't being improved all too often
seriously my favourite game of all time, and for this price? just buy it
The Good
-Controls are solid if you play on keyboard or d-pad (I have an 8bitdo controller and plays fantastically on that)'
-The aesthetic is simplistic in a very stylish manner
-The music is really good
-Fast falling is actual fast falling now (tapping down at the height of your jump arch)
-Wavedash is angles are unlockable now (no more 8 way)
The Bad
-Walldash needs an animation to make it clear that I hit the wall because some challenges end up being a bit irritating to do when I think I'm literally touching a wall
All around solid game for speed runners and platformer junkies. 8/10
If super meat boy could wavedash and shine! Great game with very satisfying and addicting movement, a nice aesthetic and a great soundtrack. Standard playthrough is challenging but very managable, S rank is brutal but never unfair.
Plain and simple, this is a joy to play for those interested in speedruns, going fast, and agile acrobatics. The versatility and possibilities in the movement is darn near perfection. Other than that, what you see is what you get - clean and clear visuals with a signature flair alongside a powerful OST. The level design is fun and unique, with the hub world just as nice as each level included in it, and the atmosphere, while very cryptic, is interesting and inviting.
Even with the abundance of references to Melee both from players and the game itself, I actually felt it played a lot like a spiritual successor to Dustforce, another speedrunning platformer which is amazing, obviously with a few key differences. I've played my own large share of many Smash Bros. games, but I was never interested in the intricacies of high level movement. Given all of the time spent in those games and a large number of other platformers, speedrun-ny or otherwise, this game still feels like it has a life all its own, even when it flaunts its inspiration.
Built from love, loads of fun, and a bargain price tag. Instant recommendation if you have any interest in it.
TL;DR WaveLand is lovely, challenging, and a successful loveletter to Melee movement
Below is a somewhat wordy review:
Concept: I have a deep love of Super Smash Brothers Melee, and Logan Foster brings the unique spacing manuever "Wavedashing" into a world of platforming. After experiencing Melee movement and microspacing I found myself desiring these options in other games as well, so I had high hopes and bought WaveLand on release.
Gameplay: Within minutes I approved of the game's physics and movement. Mr. Foster tuned his level design splendidly with the beast he had constructed. The input buffering and hitboxes all feel precise. The potential for optimization and speed in WaveLand is massive and addicting. Several times I could not make myself leave a level until I was #1 on the leaderboard. After introducing the concept, no time is wasted in ramping up the difficulty, and similar to Melee, WaveLand might be treacherous for the casual gamer. Those hungering for a challenge will have their appetite sated. In game currency is entirely for aesthetic customization, but obtaining coins and solving hubworld puzzles is fun and satisfying in its own right.
Story: Messages are scattered throughout the world alluding to the overarching plot of the game. The story is sparse and slightly cryptic, and is certainly not the focus of WaveLand.
Visuals: I'd lay money that WaveLand was created in Gamemaker, which typically means the visual quality is largely tied to the skill of the pixel artist/animator. In WaveLand's case, everything looks clean and clear. There was not a single time that my eyes were confused about any part of the game. Everything is immediately recognizable which allows a player to react and maintain speed even in the first time through the area. Environmental art keeps things fresh and imaginative between worlds while remaining unobtrusive.
Sound: All sound effects are distinguishable and appropriate. WaveLand's soundtrack is mixed nicely with the feel of the game. It functions mainly as slighty hype background music, but there are some inquisitive and atmospheric touches in the hubworlds.
Closing comments: WaveLand is fully aware of itself. Most game elements function as above average placeholders and take a backseat to the core mechanics. This game is about speed, efficiency, and near frame perfect inputs a la Dustforce. While the roots are strongly in Melee, the mechanics come into their own with a few intelligent tweaks. I must praise Mr. Foster specifically for his level design, difficulty curve, and overall awareness. The later levels fully respect and employ the difficulty that is called for when you make wavedashing your core mechanic. We should all keep our eyes out for his upcoming projects in the future! Congratulations to Logan Foster on a well-made game. Your love for Melee movement is shared by many, and is palpable in Waveland.
Coming from playing Super smash Bros melee this game feels and plays really well. The only gripe I had with the game was the lack angles made it sometime wavedash in place, but this is quicly fixed by unlocking all the angles in the gameplay options.
Really fun game. Speedrunning platformer based around an airdash. Simple to understand, hard to master, very enjoyable. Played beta and this didn't dissapoint.
