this is not necessarily a bad review but i also have some disappointments with it,
for a start Tank Universal is an old ass game now i played it when i was a little kid years ago off WildTangent Games, this game i couldn't find for the longest time i came across finally and found out there was a sequel, i played the first one and beat it and immediately moved on to the sequel, the new systems looked good the updated visuals and frame rate was nice and the and coming from the first game i was actually interested in the story. however some problems i have with this game are nitpicks and not at all integral to the game itself, the game works and plays as far i can tell.
as for my problems with it it mostly comes down to the first game, for a start the new systems are kinda a pain in the ass, it feels too simulator if thats the right word for it, the 1st game was Arcadey, every enemy has so much health and you knew exactly how many shots or what method to kill them, lights where fast but 1 hits kill and threatening in higher numbers, medium tanks where higher damage but 2 hit kill, evade their shots and hit them before they hit you, artillery was 1 hit kill but was far to the back near the enemies base, they could cause problems to network missions and were decently threatening watching as a volley of red missiles travel from the enemies wall right to your allies sitting and spinning because their AI broke, suicide where very fast and dangerous but a charged attack near them could kill them instantly an give tons of power shards, and heavy tanks where very dangerous but could be out manoeuvred while you charge up a shot to deal huge damage. In TU2 it feels like the only tanks that are still how they used to be are the light and suicide tanks, the medium tanks take so many hits to kill, especially on network missions if there are too many your better off just bailing on your own tank and finding a new one because they kill super fast but it takes 7 plus shots to kill 1 medium tank and they are the main tank the enemy deploys. along with that because they kill so fast your systems go down instantly especially if you have no armour active it feels unnecessarily difficult but maybe i just miss the arcade elements of the TU1
next complaint i have it the level design, ive been in the same field/canyon for 2 hours, its like the level design just vanished, all the unique locations and vast monolithic structures are gone, like the chasm with the sheep mini-game or the tower with the high council all these unique locations are non existent as far as ive played so far, its just valley with trees and walls on the outside of the map, and some distant towers, like i get we are leaving the area around Sector City but is there nothing out there besides a stone village in each level and some towers it just feels like this vast world doesn't really feel so vast now.
with that my final gripe is actually dumb but i miss the old characters models, making them people and not the blue red and green dwellers of this cyber world just looks kinda weird to me, also i cant take Turx seriously when he looks like someones Uncle lol, its a dumb problem i have but it not the end of the world i think its weird though how all the people we meet in the game are all like alien looking cyber people but Turx and the one woman from the gorgonopolis cutscenes are human beings
anyway like i said this isnt a negative review the games fun and if you like half simulated half Arcady tank games this and the first game are good fun, i just thing some changes from the first game are unnecessary and that TU2 is kinda barren compared to the first game, NOTE: i have 2 hours in this and haven't finished this game yet but as of where im up to which is maybe mission 9 this is the opinion i have of this game so far, Dev made a fun game and he did a good job on it but i prefer the first game
I've always loved the first Tank Universal and this was an amazing sequel.
Shout out to the creator for his immense dedication over the years and his compassionate heart.

I played the Original years ago (like 2008 back in the day in middle school and played even more once i got older in high school), I bought the second one once it came out but didn't have much time to try it. Now that I do I am so happy I got into it. It was worth the wait. Feels crisp, and refined but still so close to the original. If you have not played through either of them you should.
This game is one my favorites. Like, of all time. Given the context of a single developer, I give it a 10/10. For me, it's THAT good. The original really got my attention and this sequel is just so incredible. For three consecutive evenings it caused me to go to sleep way later than I should've. I just wanted to finish that damn map "this time"!
I just really like the graphic style. Also, you have SO much freedom to move around the huge maps and choose you own style/tactic. Heck in several maps, if you feel lucky, you can even try to take on a giant enemy robot ON YOUR OWN.
--> And the actual fun part comes from the fact that you are just as fragile as your opponents are.
So yeah, if you get too arrogant then you will be destroyed. And that can cause you to lose. Which is frustrating if that happens near the end of a level ;). But not once did I not want to retry to do better. And these days it's rare to see a game where you can actually lose. Which is weird since it adds so much excitement while playing!
I honestly don't understand why this game hasn't taken off more. Hopefully this review will help change that.
I have given Tank Universal 2 an honest shot and as much as I want to like it, I just can't find myself to do so. The devs took so much of what made the original so great and kinda just... squandered it. It's really a shame too because the original was so great.
As with the first, I must state my appreciation to the SINGLE CREATOR of this game for the hard work. This second installment to Tank Universal innovated more on some elements from the original as well as new concepts for gameplay. It takes a more sandbox approach to level design, while the first had linear yet expansive and well designed missions and maps.
Overall, this installment falls short of the enjoyable gameplay from the first Tank Universal. While has controls that are more responsive (tanks feel light as air), a 16:9 screen resolution, higher quality graphics and textures, new sounds, and new tank and foot mechanics, it has lost the charm and simplicity of the first. I think this of many things today, but the older graphics really lent themselves to the retro Tron aesthetic and felt more welcoming.
The lack of more structured level design--which had its own sandbox feel to it--makes the objectives boring. Another less enjoyable update is the combat system. Tanks take way too many hits, and the enemy stats have way too much information. While it makes sense they have shields since the player does, there's less satisfaction in shooting the targets. With this new damage system also comes repairs for disabled treads, etc. The on-foot experience is cooler with the addition of a jetpack, but it isn't enough when the main part of the game is less enjoyable: the tank experience. One major positive in Tank Universal 2's combat system is a faster charging rate. More powerful shots can be fired sooner--but it doesn't really matter if the enemy can take a hit better than before. The tank upgrade system improvements are also cool.
What happened to the perfect Tron/80s futuristic design aesthetic is what I want to know. With the update in graphics, it seems the redesign took away the charm of the first game--whose poorer graphics work more cohesively with the film effects. There are less film effects in this game that detracts from the technological feeling if the first. Character design here looks better graphically, but soldiers look less cool because they're too human. Story-wise, this game is less enjoyable because it lacks the tailored maps and seems to take itself more seriously than the last. The first had a cheesy 80s-esque plot that worked with everything; this one continues it, but in a more sterile way.
What would have been cool is if other tank designs were opened up to the player--such as the basic small tanks that shoot lasers instead of shells. Maybe more gun additions. In the end, I don't think this game holds my interest enough like the first to play it past the 2nd mission, which is unfortunate. Perhaps a third installment would blend the first two game better, which a stronger focus on keeping what worked from the first one--which was basically everything besides the slow fire rate.
I feel like I should specify, I don't think this is necessarily a bad game. It improves some things on the original, certainly. Some things are more smooth, there are options I don't remember having.
It's lost the charm somewhere along the way, though. Part of what appealed to me about the first game, part of what made it so memorable, were the quirks. Things like riding a sheep, having to flee on foot because you were set up and your tank was destroyed, having to sneak past turrets, rescuing a giant robot with a hammer only for it to perform a heroic sacrifice to save you afterwards. I got halfway through the campaign for this one, and none of that was present. It was just tank battle after tank battle, and while there was a clear effort to vary them up, the battles don't have quite enough variety in and of themselves to hold up. I got about halfway through the campaign before I realised I just didn't care about it.
Granted, those parts in the original game were flawed. Technically speaking, it is an improvement to remove them, which I think is why they're not present. But for me at least, that's come at the (presumably accidental) cost of the original's wacky, flawed charm.
I still like the game's general ideas, and I could see something good being built out of it. But this iteration I feel they put too much into the details, and ended up losing the core.
In short, the first game was deeper in story and lvl design, but still I love this type of work, hope to play the 3rd game soon.
Excellent, engaging game with a truly disappointing ending. I thought maybe it was still in early access? But it's supposedly finished. There is no boss fight. You meet the boss, then...no fight. A cutscene with a deus ex machina where the boss, the big bad who was built up as unstoppable over the course of two games, is defeated instantly and effortlessly with no action from the player.
This also makes the blue army's capture of the Revelation pointless, as it's never used. It disintegrates on the way to the final level. That is awful story telling. It would've been narratively correct to have a boss fight, where you and your blue allies fight to a point of stalemate and seem like you're going to lose, before the Revelation comes to your aid in your darkest hour, delivering the finishing blow.
I'm still upvoting this game because the gameplay itself expands in a satisfying way on the original. It takes the huge open world battles from the latter half of the first game and builds the sequel entirely around them save for a single corridor shooter level, also adding more utility to the ability to exit your tank (hacking vent covers).
Did the dev just get tired? Did resources run out and the game had to be wrapped up in a hurry? There was also that character whose face we saw when she was put into the huge NPC capsule thingie next to Gorgon. Who was that? Was she going to be more central to the story? Why make a unique model and feature her in a cutscene only to never have her appear again?
I did appreciate that the "George" storyline, which seemed hokey in the first game, turns into something actually interesting by the ending of the second game. I expected a twist but not that particular one. I had a lot of fun playing this game, I really did. But there are too many loose ends that never get tied up. Plot points that seem as if they're going somewhere, like the capture of the Revelation and that unique NPC, but then go nowhere. The ending was just a tremendous disappointment given an otherwise truly enjoyable game.
If the dev reads this, it would be a non-trivial job, but the game could be massively improved simply by the addition of a boss fight at the end of the game in which the captured Revelation comes to your aid. You have the assets, if not the animations. You have the level, the set up for a boss fight. It just needs to be actually implemented.
1. Expand the platform you encounter Gorgon on. Make it into a circle or semicircle around Gorgon, and widen so multiple blue tanks can join you and fight comfortably on that area.
2. You arrive and fight Gorgon on your own, He periodically heals himself a little bit by eating NPCs from the capsules. You can shoot the capsules to prevent this but the blue commander admonishes you not to kill the trapped NPCs.
3. When Gorgon's health is reduced to 80%, your allies show up. They tell you that you don't have to fight alone, and assist you in bringing Gorgon's health down to 50%.
4. You receive the nuke from the blue commander and use it. But it doesn't finish Gorgon off, only takes him down to 10%.
5. Gorgon destroys all blue tanks at once. All appears to be lost.
6. Revelation appears overhead and bombards Gorgon, whereupon his frame fails and worm Gorgon emerges
7. Ending proceeds as usual, except that if you destroyed the NPC capsules to make the fight a little easier, the scene of liberating the NPCs is replaced with one mourning their loss
I really wanted such a great game to end on a more satisfying note than it did. I feel as if you have all the pieces needed to create a truly satisfying ending if you want to. It's worth adding this final layer of polish, isn't it? Why bother to do anything if you're not going to do the best you can?
I have seen in the forums that this project was exhausting for you, such that you don't intend for any sequels. Fair enough! But why not polish up what you do have finished, to take it from "great" to "legendary"?
With a proper boss fight, 2 possible endings, and compiling TU 1 and TU 2 into a single huge game, I feel as if it would do very well on consoles. The project of porting it to each platform would be much less time and energy consuming than actually making either game was, while bringing in a new wave of sales with each platform it comes to.
I disliked taking away the option of what was available in TU 1 turret turns with the tank base in the controls menu, Too easy to get disoriented making too easy for the enemy to hit me. The RAGE level is too difficult to win even on easy mode. This game is okay but TU 1 was more fun even though graphics are not as good.
I really loved the 1st Tank Universal and finished the game 9 times. I'm all nuts when it comes to Tron aesthetic, and TU really conveyed it well. But jeez how disappointing and bad this sequel is:
- Utterly unplayable. I usually play games at normal or hard difficulty. For example, I'm on 1st or 2nd place of Vektor Wars leaderboards (another Tron inspired game). Here, I couldn't pass level 3 (/27) on normal skill, so went to easy difficulty, just to end being stuck on level 7: you're launched in an arena where you must turn switches to blue. Foes will turn them to red. There are 15-20 foes, shooting at you with a rate you'll never attain. Some switches are blocked by 4-5 foes, so just running on them is not a good idea. You're all by yourself. I've seen some allies for a time, never to appear again. Tried 3 times, and always the foes were like frenzy. And just before that level, everything was way too easy. Talk about uncontrolled difficulty curve.
- Your tank speed and firerate is unbelievably slow. EVERYBODY goes and shoots faster than you, making the game as fun as a 100 meters run with legs attached. Not only that, but levels start at miles from where the action is. So you move for 5 minutes before really playing. You can later upgrade speed and firerate, but why do they have to be so ridiculously low at the beginning? And even by upgrading "reload time" at 6 on 8, I can't shoot at half the foes firerate.
Not to mention:
- Steamwebhelper will crash at every game launch. Can do with that, but well :/
- Be prepared for some useless 15 seconds map generation on every part of the game. That seems ok for entering new levels, but not when going back to menu, where generating maps have absolutely no interest.
- I guess there's a story somewhere, as suggested by a diarrhea of sentences for which you'll make great use of spacebar, and which has so little interest I wonder if it's not a conceptual joke.
The game just gives a feeling the dev forced some RPG mechanics and gave up tuning it. How could it become the unfocused and untested mess it is? Tank Universal 2 is a just frustratingly unplayable waste of time. In my 40 years of gaming, starting with Space Invaders, this one is in my bottom 10.
A fantastic game, quite similar to the Battlezone series with a good storyline and interesting range of missions.
Battles are often fought over wide areas with lots of friendly and enemy AI tanks to give the feel of a very large battle going on. Combat involves trying to hit moving enemies with arc trajectory shots while avoiding getting hit back, a reasonable amount of skill is needed. There's a good range of different tanks, special weapons and upgrades to get through the game. Also there's a skirmish mode to try after you finish the main story.
For the price it is definitely worth getting, the same goes for the first Tank Universal game.
I loved the original and this one is better just a good old fashion tank game with a neat story line. Both part one and two are worth the money!!
I like the Tank Universal franchise; This game is a fine successor to first game.

Points Explained:
Better graphics, the look of the game is much better than the previous installment. The larger battle arenas with a few distinct biomes give a nice feel to the game play without being overly detailed and cluttered. However having to load into the main menu as a simulation happens in the background is annoying. Please put the main menu UI over that particular loading screen.
Core game play, The 3 modes, Fort (attack/defense), Skirmish (attack/defense attrition) and Hub battle (control point, dual fort battle), feel more alive with the new (and refurbished) mechanics. although the node beam towers being able to destroy other towers and fort walls is over powered.
The ability to control (and have specific upgrades for) other tank types is a nice feature even though they each have only one specific upgrade and have lower versatility (and skill ceiling) than the default tank. however your choice of tank isn't carried over to the next level (notable story exceptions excluded) this is also a problem for the turret upgrade. This upgrade is also lost when building a beam tower as they seem to count as tanks in that respect.
Upgrade wise the points and costs are well balanced; EXCEPT for the Macguffin device that is the gorgon construction project sabotage. this plot device seems to exist purely to leech upgrade points and ensure you do not become too overpowered too fast. additionally the bonus of a allied beam tank should either be controllable, or award upgrade points for its kills. I made the mistake of taking that choice from the secrets and basically got no upgrade points the next battle as it had a nasty habit of kill stealing the power pylons and turrets.
Now for the story, if you're looking for a linear narrative, I recommend the 1st game, this version seems to gloss over story telling in lieu of gratuitous tank battles. each section of story has 3-4 core game modes then 1 story driven section. whereas the 1st Tank Universal had the opposite 3-4 story driven experience with 1 major battle in-between. I especially liked the village chapter of TU1. the story itself had a lot of strange and sudden plot points. Especially the ending, it felt truly rushed and unpolished. the exposition dump that the player character suddenly remembered as you drive to meet the final boss was something that truly astounded me, in a bad way. when the character first started talking I figured the portrait and name were bugged and someone else was talking. I expected much more following the smooth linear experience that was TU1. I hope that if the dev makes a third installment they focus more on the narrative. a weak story makes even great games like this feel hollow.
Back to game play the new mechanics like system damage, and repairs are great and gently explained by tooltips and loading screens. but the ability to repair your own fort came as a surprise to me, even as integral as it became to win fort defenses. Speaking of fort battles, the bosses that you have to encounter are mortal even without hitting their weak spots. even if this seems counter intuitive, it is important to keep shooting them, or they will defeat you. I was un-aware of this until I accidentally blew ones entire weak point off after it kept teleporting away, and keeping the weakest point facing away from me. there was also a gorgon style doom ball that straight up jumped my walls and destroyed my base before I could even get there, boosting.
I remember playing this game way back 'in the day'. I have great memories with the first game. And when I saw a second I got really excited. I tried it and I think it's because I use Windows 10 that this doesn't work for me, so I did get a refund. But if this keeps getting updated and doesn't die, it could be a very good game. I really hope it grows, because the first back then was amazing.
I've played this title since I was a kid and to this day remains one of my favorite by far. and for its price this is a great game... yes its lacking as of right now, but I'm expecting tons more content coming out soon. (don't forget both game 1&2 have been made by ONE guy.) here is the list the game ratings

Great story-line that continues from the first game. The graphics are different from the standard games, it's more arcade look or a type of simulation. The custom game to create your own battles is petty good to, their are a lot of units on the battlefield classic blue vs red but you can only be the blue team because of the story from the first game, you would have to play to find out why. The soundtrack is custom made but fits in well with the fights or battles in the game. The environments are huge would make sense for the second game because it's more like a war going on while the first game some what had large levels for certain missions. The enemy A.I are a bit to op still when you play some missions on hard or put to more sides for the red team to attack your base for a custom game. Overall petty good game it's to bad not a lot of people know about this great game series hopefully one day tank universal 3 will come out or made.
Been following this game for ages, and it doesn't disappoint. Huge fan of the first one, and although there are not too many levels just now, this one has the same look and feel as it's predecessor. Looking forward to seeing how this game develops
I really love the custom fortress attack and defense missions. The custom levels are procedurally generated so you get a different game each time and there are a lot of attack and defense parameters that you can tweak.
The retro / Tron look is really cool and I can see myself playing this game over and over again (I did with the original).
For an early access game, this is very functional and enjoyable.
I'm way impressed that this has been written by a single dev and he's been very open and reactive to feedback so I expect this game is going to improve even more before it's finally released.
Gets my vote!
I'm gonna be frank, I've been following this project for years. This has been in development since as far back as 2010 (give or take a year), so it wont die anytime soon, but there may be a time where there wont be an update for a little while.
In its current state, it is not the best experience but it's promising. I look forward to future updates that fix my gripes with it. (optimizations, the campaign, being able to use the Artillery Tank, etc)
I have thoroghly enjoyed the first game and look forward to the completetion of this sequel.
