Good balance of fun, light-hearted elements and darker, more mysterious storytelling. Characters were generally very likeable and the art was pretty good, especially some of the backgrounds. Really needs a proper skip function though; I ended up using AutoHotkey to mash my space bar to get through repeat playthroughs.
I mean, I guess it's fine if you want to play a game where you date cats, but I didn't find the characters or the overall story particularly compelling. Maybe I'm just spoiled by Hatoful Boyfriend.
Super cute game, the relationship you develop with the cats is just pure seratonin. You can definitely see how much love was put into the game.
There's only a con: to me it was worth replaying so many times to get the 100% achievement (you have to see every possible scene in the game), but it would've been much faster and A LOT less tiring if they added a skip button.
can they stop making games look like they'll be cute and funny but they actually just fucking destroy you and make you not want to play games ever again? This game is surprisingly deep, once you get started the various different characters are interesting enough to keep your attention as well as the mysteries that unfold about Cat Island
Personally I think its a great game if you want a dating sim with a pretty engrossing mystery!
I have to warn people who think they are getting a cute cartoon game that will be light and funny. The storyline gets quite dark with themes of animal experimentation and cruelty. Clearly a lot of work went into this but it feels like a jarring mix of cute with depressing. If you're ok with dark themes you might enjoy it, but if you don't want to think about cats getting hurt stay away.
Purrfect Date very badly needs a fast forward or skip option, since a single playthrough is the stories of nine people on the island, and you have to replay multiple times to see everything.
Each story is of a lab assistant who, best I can tell, has unwittingly gotten a job where cosmetics are tested on cats. I got as far as the part where you are supposed to inject cats with some unknown substance to see how they react, as the cats basically beg you not to.
Nothing else about the game really matters at that point. It could be the next Elder Scrolls game, for all I care. When you can't progress without torturing cats, it's over.
Summary
A surprisingly emotional game filled with charming characters that falters in its conclusion and lack of common visual novel features. If you are in any way triggered by animal cruelty and death then I’d recommend you stay away.

I love cats. I love dating sims. So I see a game where I can date actual, non-anthropomorphized (in physical form at least) cats then I have to play. And for the majority of the game I was absolutely in love. The characters were all quirky and unique yet still believable and I really enjoyed learning more about the island and its inhabitants.
Unfortunately, the game falls flat in its overall story. The villain is very predictable, and it doesn’t take long to figure out what nefarious goings-on are happening on the island. I genuinely believed it was going to be more complicated as it seemed the story hinted that there was more going on than the obvious plot. To be honest, if you’re of a certain age and ever saw the episode of Tiny Toon Adventures where the villain was whaling to get oil to manufacture cosmetics the you figure out the plot pretty quick.
Honestly though, I could have overlooked the predictable story in favor of the game’s other charms, but the animal cruelty, which does result in several deaths of the island’s cats and is at times described in rather graphic detail, goes largely unpunished. This is made even more extreme when the game makes it clear that the island’s cats are all humans, and the kittens are literal children (and yes, the death of a kitten is described in rather brutal detail) . So basically the villain is murdering people and is well-aware that he’s murdering people, not just cats . The worst part is in the end the villain’s only punishment is that he’s blackmailed into continuing to work humanely with his research animals or be turned into a cat himself. That’s it, he gets no comeuppance for perpetuating some pretty horrific animal/human abuse and directly murdering several cat/humans . Had I known about this beforehand, I would not have played the game.
In addition to the unsatisfying story, my other big complaint about the game is the lack of a skip button or a manual save feature. Pretty much every visual novel I’ve ever played, including the free games made by a single person over the course of one month, has a skip button and the ability to create multiple saves. So if you want to replay the game for achievements or to see all the endings then prepare yourself to do a lot of spacebar smashing/mouse clicking to skip through the seen text. Accidentally misclick a choice? Then prepare to redo everything because the game only autosaves.
I had so much fun with this game in the beginning. The characters and the humor were all fantastic, but by the end I was so completely unsatisfied with the story and the frustrating lack of a skip/save feature that I had no desire to bother replaying. Unless you can get the game on a good sale and are prepared to see animal/human abuse and murder go unpunished then I would not recommend the game. Its charms aren’t enough to make up for the flaws.
This game was pretty fun but also very repetitive. The trailer was a little bit misleading as it seemed a bit funnier than it actually is. It’s definitely worth trying out when on sale though, if you enjoy these sort of games.
This is a funny, heartwarming, and surprisingly interesting visual novel.
However, I'd really appreciate more controls. How about a skip read text feature?
Honestly, it's probably exactly what you're expecting. If you're a fan of silly dating sims like "Dream Daddy" or my personal fav "Hatoful Boyfriend", you'll probably enjoy this one. Checks the boxes of dating sims past, but is it especially memorable? Not really. After not playing this or thinking about this for a while (and I completed the game), I can only remember the ending, really. Choices are somewhat streamlined. Do I regret the buy? Nope. I'd recommend this game. It's a cute addition to any collection, and still gave me quite a few hours.
I'm a little ashamed that I enjoyed this game as much as I did... but Bae Team should be proud of what they made!
Great writing, okay art (it fits the game well), and multiple endings mean there's a lot of replay value.
I have a few complaints, such as:
-Not enough music variation
-Art was a little lacking from time to time
-No skip button for dialogue
But, those are very minor complaints, compared to all the good! If you like dating sims, and want something rediculously funny to play, I'd reccomend trying it!
Really unique game, and not just because you date cats!
Loved: Really unique personalities of the datable cats, not just your standard VN characters. Sometimes what seems like the "best" choice actually turns out to be the wrong choice, when romancing the cats. An authentic dating experience.
Hated: That you can't skip already-seen text. Made multiple run throughs get boring until you got to a scene that was new.

Disclaimer: I purchased this game after some deliberation when I saw it featured on Steam for a brief time; I'm not a follower of the developer's other work.
The Main Things you need to know
Purrfect Date is a visual novel with an empthasis on the novel part championed by Oliver Age 24 & Ruby Bae (a cute British couple I presume).
This is evidently a passion project that took over 2 years to develop because they've recently put out a challenge wanting only 1000 retweets for them to get Purrfect Date tattoos!
For anyone who came here with the impression that this is an erotic novel featuring raunchy dialogue and bestiality: you're in for a surprise.
There is endearing affection, romance and love waiting for you if you want to make those decisions but for anything more explicit - you'll have to look elsewhere.
What may at first glance appear like yet another "edgy" indie dating sim with the typical flourishes of memes and over-the-top humour is actually a game with a complex & interesting story with plenty of mystery to keep you on your feet (or paws?).
The game also featuring intricate characters (you know a game has done well with its writing when you're able to relate to characters and to see both things you like & dislike about them) which could only have been fleshed out more if the game was even longer.
This game is also plenty of fun if you and/or a friend decide to do the voice-acting :)
As someone who doesn't read too much fiction because they prefer the authenticity and nuance of real interactions - I can say this game is ticking the right boxes.
Overall I'd reccomend this game to anyone who has the patience to read, gets pleasure from trying to work out a mystery, likes a dash of humour and doesn't mind too much when things get adorable! =(^w^)=

Story
The story of Purrfect Date is written by Ruby and has plenty going for it due to its satisfying length and the mystery interwoven - it is hard to really capture this experience in a review without providing spoilers, but as mentioned before, the novel part is the main aspect of this game and where the game really shines; hopefully you end up loving the characters as much as I do (Trixie & McMurphy ♥)
The somewhat linear nature of the game means the best experience will be on the first playthrough. Unfortunately this meant that repeat playthroughs (for curiosity or achievements) can be a bit of a chore due to the amount of dialogue that needs to be skipped.
The good news is that someone raised this on the forum and I understand the Devs are planning to implement a feature to skip dialogue - in the meantime autohotkey programs can be used.
Gameplay
In terms of gameplay, this isn't one of those visual novels where you have to juggle a bunch of stats and use trial-and-error to progress (looking at you Long Live the Queen).
Other than choices during dialogue, here are the gameplay mechanics:
- You get the choice of Romance, Research & Recon events which you can do in any order, however, the chapter is progressed once 3 "Research" events are completed.
[*] "Rest" mechanic used to restore hearts (used up by events)... this doesn't seem to add much to the game honestly but does sometimes trigger scenes.
Music
This game features an OST by Oliver Age 24 which is about 45 minutes in length -- it offers a reasonable variety and is used appropriately for the scenes in the game.
I enjoyed the quirkiness in places but feel this didn't really stand out too much - feel this is mostly because the story is much longer than the OST though.
Graphics
The artwork in the game was created by Dan Lish - feel it is a bit difficult to really comment on this aspect because I've not played many visual novels / know basically nothing about artwork :P
The style is generally colourful, tropical and a brush of cute with more somber artwork to align with the darker sides of the story - I found it charming but not sure what else to say!
Conclusion
Few gameplay mechanics helped to keep focus, could have had more music but overall an excellent story with pleasant artwork.
Some advice for the first playthrough: take your time, enjoy the cats, make choices carefully and try not to stay up past 4 o'clock in the morning!
I'm going to be honest: I kind of got this game as a joke. A friend showed me the trailer while we were drinking, so I bought it thinking it would provide a couple hours of silly entertainment.
It provides entertainment in spades, and quickly moves beyond silliness to suck you into a story that's got teeth. I very much enjoyed it and plan on putting a few more hours in to see some of the other endings.
There's not as much choice as I would like, but if you don't mind your visual novels being on rails, it's a fun read.
What a game.
I have just completed my first playthrough. Thats right I said first, because this is a game you will have to play multiple times if you are anything like me and suck at making decisions. Decisions that will haunt you if you dont go back to fix it and make it right. IMPORTANT LIFE CHANGING DECISIONS!
The story completely caught me off guard with its depth and direction. It will suckerpunch you right in the feels. Science, deception, ominous mysteries, beautiful dialog. The story pulled me in with its kitty claws and wouldnt let go until I uncovered its secrets. Dark horrific secrets. The story in this game pulled a madoka magica on me ok?!
I was deceived. Although pleasantly deceived.
11/10 would recommend to everyone.
Been a fan of Oliver's content for years now, which, paired with my love of cats and dating sims, made me pretty hype for this game.
I definitely wasn't disappointed. The story was really great, the art was adorable, the music was simple and relaxing, and the ending (the good one at least) was rewarding.
I was expecting a simple, cute dating simulator, and was really surprised with the amount of depth the story actually ended up containing.
The only thing I would say is that the game is a little unforgiving, and going back through all the text of the game to get an ideal ending was really tedious.
Other than that, I'm overjoyed at how well this game turned out. For sure worth playing. Will definitely be invested in any future content Bae Team produces.
As of writing this review, I've completed the 'best' ending, including all that cat's routes.
This was a really enjoyable experience - you can tell there's been a lot of love and heart poured into this game. It is what it says on the tin - a cat dating sim, and that game is fully aware of how silly and fun this premise is. You play a scientist who's recently come to this island, mostly inhabited by cats. Almost as soon as you step off the boat, you're doomed through a series of strange events to be turned into a cat, unless you can create an antidote.
Fortunately, you also gain the ability to talk to cats, and the five main characters - the cats - are more than willing to assist you, and so begins a quest where you get to know each cat, while also doing your job as a researcher and investigating the mysteries of the island, and the organisation you've come to work for.
Although the game is a 'dating sim' with animals, fear not - there are no creepy undertones here. Physically, you barely go beyond what the average cat owner does wth their pets. The dates are far more about getting to know the cats as 'people', and having fun little adventures with them. In fact, if I had to level one criticism at the game, it would be that on a few routes it can be a little jarring to jump from the innocent little vignettes to the cats suddenly professing their love for you.
While I don't want to delve into spoilers, I'll also say that the game also has a fairly involved storyline outside of the dating, as well as a unique, honest resolution.
The writing quality is better than a lot of visual novels as well - the prose flows a lot more smoothly, and I didn't pick up on any grammatical errors or typos throughout the entire experience. That's a problem that tends to plague the medium, partially due to the sheer amount of text in them, so it's nice to see a work that avoids this.
You can see the art style from the screenshots - that remains at a consistently high quality throughout the game. The wonderful score retains the game's cheeky sense of humour - I laughed out loud the first time I heard one of the 'sad' tracks, a sombre piece offset by the fact that it's rendered in 'meow's.
Overall this is a really heartwarming game built with a lot of love. It's certainly the most heartfelt visual novel I've played this year - if you like visual novels, cats, supporting indie devs, or any combination of the three, I'm pawsitive you should pick this one up.
I hate cats and dating sims alike. So take it from me when I say this is something else entirely. I expected it to be a furry-pandering, creepy mess but there's a lot more to it than that. I won't spoil a thing, just give it a go and if you're not hooked within the first two hours you can refund it.
Also... McMurphy's my favourite. There. I said it.

Behold, as this game introduces you to a mysterious cat island. You, a brand new assistant, have been chosen to aid professor Pawpur in his research of this island and its inhabitants. You'll first be met with 5 different cats that you also seem to understand after an event.
The game sucked me in instantly. You'll quickly find yourself immersed in this mysterious island and its s̴̠̥̫̜̎͛̕͝ē̵̡͓̠̉c̶̛͔̯̲̖̏̒r̷̢̥͙͊̆͋͘e̸̟͉̗͌͑t̷̯̠̪͌̅̉͜s̴͈̀͋
Do you like puns? Do you like cats? Do you like humour? Do you like hxppy things? Do you like mystery?
Then this game is definitely for you.
PS. I might be just paranoid but not everything may be what it seems...
