Trash game
Key bindings are atrocious
animations unpolished
mechanics quite clunky....

Seems like an abandoned game - is full of bugs and game breaking glitches. The worst one is when you get stun locked by enemies and you cannot do anything. 1/10 game

Should be a 0.99$ game

Soda Girls is one of those games that seems to work best with a controller. I'm more of a keyboard junkie, but despite not having a lot of modern controller experience I found it easier to use a controller (I got further with a controller than keyboard). Controller support seems pretty decent, and the game mentions the controls within the game. Graphics feel pretty dated, but decent. Sound is okay, but a bit grating after awhile, it would have been nice to have some different soundtracks in the background. Running Soda Girls through Steam on Xubuntu 20.04 with a Zotac GeForce GX650Ti Boost (650, not 1650). I have dual monitors and find some games don't launch correctly. Soda Girls takes up 1 of my 1920x1080 monitors. I probably wouldn't play this game for hours on end, but 20 - 40 minutes a stretch, perhaps. Decent, fun, but I have a long way to go unlocking other achievements. I generally suck at beat-em-up style games. This one I'm a fan of.

Very fun beat 'em up with varied characters and a lot of charm. I really like the music and the snappy gameplay. Some of the last bosses are b.s. and the 3D backgrounds are not exactly pretty. All in all, this doesn't matter much. Is it a good action game and worth the price? YES. If anything, I wish they'd make a sequel!

It's clear to me the developers could've made a better game, but didn't think to somehow.
There's DNA for a Guardian Heroes type game, since all the environments are 3D and enemies can jump out of the background at times.

The developers seemingly put more thought into how the enemies will mess you over than how to make the game fun. There's a level where they introduce electrified floors and in that same level place two enemies that will knock you into a floor above you so you get stunlocked.

This game is like "Sugar-Free" Soda, it doesn't taste as good and the sweetener is probably worse for you, may as well get something with sugar.

It's a little rough around the edges in terms of stability but its got a lot of heart in its art style and tone. The sound effects are really crunchy and always indicate when enemies are killed. The levels are varied enough to not get tedious and are structured as bite sized mini levels that have a defined enemy placement that connect to other nodes on a large grid. Overall for a budget game its got solid gameplay and enough of an arcade style to be easy to get into without much delay. Pretty good overall and worth the money.

Rougher around the edges than a circular sawblade but satisfying mindless button mashing when you unlock some interesting moves to build up into a combo. Not polished at all, in a raw state, messy but delectable like a Ferrerro Rocher sat in the sun. Only really for fans of the genre, this won't win over those who pontificate on this genre most mockingly from outside fanhood.

The game is ok, it's well drawn, as some bugs, the story is meh and there is some grind but just some. The difficulty is almost none in the story part, but in the challenges there is some challenge. It can run in a "potato" pc. In short, you can pass some time playing this game. 6/10

Keep trying, keep unlocking if this game starts off too repetitive. Eventually the game goes from boring macro combos to I better strategize which combo to use for crowd control or to not have recovery time for an enemy with a barricade (stroller, bombs, etc.). Then the fun begins, as well as getting more characters. Very unique approach to gameplay with this.

Moderately fun beat-em-up game. There are some level up items, but this game is mostly focused on selecting different fighting animations. Put together a series of fight moves, that will trigger in sequence as you press attack repeatedly. New fight moves unlock through enemy drops.

There was a lot that I liked about the game, such as the music and the art style. There is a lot more narrative than I expected, with the NPCs getting their own levels and fight sequences. Otherwise, the gameplay is repetitive, one level looking just like most others, with only attack-style unlocks to add any flourish. I also had trouble mastering the attack timing, and I seldom pulled off a successful block.

Be aware that only the police girl is available at the start of the game, and 40% of owners never unlock any additional fighters. I slogged through a bunch of levels, hoping there would be some payoff, but even after unlocking the store and a new set of levels, it was just more of the same. There was never excitement about a new level, a new trinket, or a new unlocked combat skill.

I enjoyed this game on Ubuntu Linux 18.10 & 19.10, with radeon mesa graphic drivers, and a xbox-stle gamepad controller. Technically, this game will not windowed-mode, and it has problems with keyboard-mouse controls. This game uses the Unity game engine.

At full price, I think there is a lot of fun to be had here. This is a nicely polished game with a lot of extras, even though you will probably only play for a couple of hours.

Really cool character designs and animation aside, I really have to question the game design choices. Some would have you believe that this game is hard but fair, that would be the furthest thing from the truth. Some enemies have super armor with absolutely no counterplay to them. Some enemies just have unavoidable random attacks and can't be taken out without damage trading. Money system is grindy and doesn't feel particularly rewarding.

Also, I'm not sure if it's just the particular controller setup I have, but I couldn't get the game to reassiign buttons properly. I use an old Radio Shack PS2 to PC converter, and I was forced to play the game with Triangle as jump and X as attack, which was monumentally uncomfortable. I got used to it eventually, but the above design flaws just kind of stuck with me.

I think what they were going for here was a River City Ransom kind of vibe, but other than the characterful animations, it just kind of falls flat. Take a pass on this, you're not missing much.

Note that I hope the devs learn from the problems this game has, and release a better, more balanced product in the future, and if they do, I would buy it in a heartbeat. Theres a lot of love here for thier project, it just feels like it was put in the wrong places.

Just finished the final level! Gotta say I've had a pretty good time playing this the past few days, despite some annoyances and some grinding I had to do, well, didn't technically have to, but it made some battles a lot easier. Good amount of levels and unique bosses and a lot of unlockables too.

So this is a 2D beat'em up that feels like a fighting game. 7 unique playable characters, 6 of which you unlock, and they each have their own set of moves, 20 for each as I recall. You can make your own combos and you have to be good on your timing if you want to survive. Especially with Jacey and Yumiko, they both have counter attacks, where you have to press the attack (for Jayce) and Dodge (for Yumiko) just before getting hit. tricky to get the hang of, but man is it satisfying and also very effective.

There are also RPG elements in the form of upgrades, that you can unlock all, but can only equip one of a kind at a time. For example you can choose you dodge roll to have more distance, or more invincibility time.

There are also challenge levels you can play, but I tried the first one a few times and kept failing, so I just quit. The thing here your upgrades and combos won't carry over, so it is just you and your skills, and also your sanity XD

The art: I personally really like the style, and even the simplistic background fit well with the overal look. Although it could use some work in some areas, especially the UI.

What I hope the dev(s) fix in the final build, is some balancing here and there, some enemies are really annoying to deal with early on, even later on, mainly the vomitting ones. Also add more music tracks as there are only a handful, and get repetitive.

It looks nice ingame with all the neato flashy stuff that pops up when you hit enemies but I can see how the "combos" can get really boring to people really fast.

The menus in the game are not really much to look at but they work, albeit a tad comic sans'd here and there.

Also the devs seemed to have abandoned the game and stopped communicating for like a year now, so that stinks.
The game had potential but ever since it seems like the game was abandoned its kinda left in this state where it feels like its not finished, frankly because it isn't finished.

I dunno maybe get it if it's on discount, there are probably better options gameplay wise but its pretty unique visually.

I probably said a bunch of redundant shit like 100 times over but I'm reviewing this while tired as shit so whatever.

I kinda like the game, but it seems to have been abandonded for almost a year. It's around 80% and you can get to the end of the game, but it's definitely missing some parts. Get it on sale when it's less than $5 if you wanna try it.

A lot of smoke and mirrors. The games characters and animations are very well done. But the combat, which is the entire meat of this game, got incredibly boring to me after only 20 minutes.

I got it on sale for like 3.99, and since I like the aesthetic appeal, and it's still early access, I'll keep it. I also have a soft spot for side scrollers. But I'm just not sure that the foundation that's been built is going to turn into anything worthwhile.

Levels are way too short and combat is way too repetitive and I don't really know how they'd change that enough to make me excited for it. I saw the pictures and thought "Oh cool, it's Viewtiful Joe for the PC". Unfortunately it just feels like an NES game with a fresh coat of paint over it, or a game you'd find on Newgrounds.

An enjoyably brainless button-masher, and I mean that literally as there is only one combo: press attack five times, whilst occasionally dodging attacks. But there is surprising depth there, as you can change individual attacks in that five-button sequence, and switch between three sets of sequences on the fly, unlocking new attacks as you progress through the game. This opens up the game to a ridiculous amount of experimentation: maybe the third attack knocks enemies out of the reach of your fourth, or maybe a sequence that works really well against regular enemies keeps being interrupted by enemies with projectiles, and before you know it you're legitimately thinking about whether an uppercut would be a better finish than a bazooka. Along with moves there are also other characters, weapons, challenges (which are REALLY challenging), accessories and colours to unlock, so there's plenty to do and it doesn't actually feel that repetitive to do it, as you're always compelled to experiment with attack sequences as you fight through mercifully short levels.

I'll also give Soda Girls praise for this: it lets you upgrade individual enemies as well, which is a really creative take on difficulty levels, and one I now find myself wishing more beat-em-ups did. Levelling up the cannon fodder enemies doesn't make the bigger bosses any harder, so you can find a nice difficulty balance that works for you instead of a binary easy-normal-hard.

There's an element of grind - as there always is when there's so much to unlock - but Soda Girls is really enjoyable to play; it's one of the better brawlers to just idly beat up bad guys in, and the attacks are suitably over the top that changing up your combo sequence is surprisingly fun. The translation is really bad though, personally that doesn't bother me but if it bothers you, well, bear that in mind. Other than that, don't be put off by the Early Access stigma, Soda Girls is really polished and there's a solid game here, and beat-em-up fans will find much to keep them punching in it.

Remember as kids we would usually choose a mainstream cartoon to watch religously yet there would always be a "close 2nd" as near and dear to our hearts that simply wasn't quite as "well known"? In other words, there is G.I. Joe then there's M.A.S.K.. There's Transformers then there's Go-bots. There's Thunder-cats then there's Silver-hawks. There's TMNT but then there's Street-sharks. There's Batman The Animated series then there's Disney's Gargoyles. Er,you get my point!

Soda-Girls embodies the above conundrum. With iconic characters that look like they're the "cousins" of all-time-great gaming Divas like Tron Boone(with assisting mech),Samus Aran,Nightshade, and Jill Valentine it's obvious the developers are pretty honest about wearing their inspirations on their sleeves. Furthermore, the graphic style bears more than a slight semblance to Skull-girls.Viewtiful Joe, and some of our nostagic favorite kids shows from Cartoon-Network. None of this feels sloppy though as the little details and in-jokes show how much the developers cared when making this game. There's a difference between "entirely ripping off" an idea as opposed to being inspired by an idea and putting one's own twist/embelishment on it. Soda Girls fortunately does more of the later than the former.

On the surface some might mistake Soda Girls to be a "mindless brawler" with some platforming segments in which you must navigate police-woman Jacey (Your first character in story-mode before you help to liberate Jacey's friends) thru small contained 2D danger zones of falling debris, electric panels, sinking foot-steps,and various exploding propane cannisters. Luckily these same hazards can be used againt the enemies too forcing you to strategize. Unlike other brawlers, enemies in Soda Girls come at you in smaller numbers though they tend to be a lot more formible. Aka a couple of zombie hippy girls or zombie weiner dogs can still fuck your shit up if you go into a fight with bad timing. (Sorry I failed to mention there's a zombie apocolypse going on but now you know!)

Bosses start off easy peasy but by the time I got to "The Cess-poll" there was a Junk-rat looking psychopath giving me issues as he eventually eats the huge mutton chop he's beating you with (restoring his health) THEN he brandishes a friggin shotgun that can fire in three directions. This means yeah, you'll probably have to grind to level up whilst farming for better weapons, farming more bottle caps to purchase additional perk-items (Or level them up as well), and pick up more attacks to mix and match in your various combo strings. I can see how some might get frustrated by this but for me it's just a chance to improve and loot which appeals a bit to my OCD-laden tendencies!

Oddly enough, one character can even improve the performance of enemies. I'd advise against this until you're very skilled and prepared but if you want greater risks and greater rewards the oppertunity is definitely there.

Furthermore, reviewers that complain there's only one attack button miss the point. Aka the whole appeal of soda-girls is unlocking "new attacks" that you can place in any sequential order on one of three equipped plan sheets. Yes, you are pressing one button rapidly to do combos but those attacks are ones you can put into any order you want. This once again plays into the strategy of the game as you'll need to experiment with the sequential order of different moves to get the best and flashiest results. I feel as if people out there read a few bad reviews about Soda Girls being a "mindless button masher" and never bothered to clarify whether that was true or not. It's really not and the challenge always feels "just right" though if you're in a jam all the characters can be "leveled up" and also be equipped with additional charms and ornaments that can increase strength, speed, immunity to certain kind of attacks, and even the rate at which you attain bottle caps (currency) or experience points.

The only qualm I can level against Soda Girls is it's still an early acess game though in its' defense it seems to be an early acess game that's "almost" done. Aka, there's already a lot there but the developers have talked about adding more characters and more stages. I'm hoping they do just that though I understand how it can be discouraging to put together such a good game only to have it be a "flash in the pan" as far as its' public impact is concerned. Aka, I feel with the right marketing and the right e-celebs doing let's plays Soda-Girls would have really "taken off" as it taps into that same nostalgia as Skull girls,Viewtiful Joe, and Senran Kagura.

Pros

+Good cast of unique characters

+ Nice colorful and outlandish "punk noir" enemy designs

+ You get to custom create your own combos

+ Levels tend to be well designed with a decent balance of enemies and environmental hazards. (Which if you're smart enough can be used to your own advantage. Kicking a propane tank into a pile of slumbering zombies is always fun!)

+ Appealing art style

+ Is deeper and more layered in complexity than it initially seems

+ Injected "something new" into the beat-em-up genre which is not something I see done too often

Cons

-It can be easy to get caught up in "cheap juggles" from multiple foes.

- Some bugs remain. In one area I could literally "walk on air" and I'm sure that was not intended.

- Still "early acess". We can only hope the developers are stalwart enough to see this one through and finish their work.

- Soda Girls had a "flash in the pan effect" which may have discouraged its' creators even more. Still, a somewhat recent update suggests not all hope is lost!

I have 12.4 hours registered in the time of this review.
4 characters unlocked and 2 still locked and all available stages at the moment finished with the first girl.
And I'm having a blast.

In short It's a beat'em up, hard as ol beat'em ups used to be, with lots of personalization and some rpg strokes.
Choose your Soda Girl (tm), choose weapon skin, character skin, stage and fight!
From fighting you'll be getting caps, with caps you can buy and choose upgrades for your girl (+hp, +damage, faster attacks, faster movement, hp recovery, inmunity, more exp, more caps, ....... SO MANY COMBINATIONS). You'll also get sometimes gifts, gifts can contain huge amounts of caps, weapon or character skins, +hp or +soda upgrades.

Each girl has a max of 27 attacks, you'll choose 5 in the order you like to create your own combo.
you'll have 4 main buttons: Attack, Jump, Dodge and Drink Soda to heal.

You may think, then all I have to do is hit Attack all the time and that's it. But no. This game is hard. Each enemy is different in it's own way and attacks. You'll need to know their patterns and best way to hit them without dying in the process. And you'll die, a lot. There's a death counter in your save file so you can see how much of a noob you are. #goodtimes

As I said you can level up and upgrade yourself and there will be a moment you'll be a lil overpowered. BUT you also have a section to upgrade your freaking enemies ((NGH~ YES HARDER PLEASE)). They change aspect with each upgrade, thing I find really neat.

So, with all this said. Right now it's an Early Access Game. And I'll probably play more than 25hours as it is right now. The devs are working hard in the UI, combat, solving bugs and adding new characters and stages. (you also have challenges, really unique ones).

so, PROS:
- Art and character design superb, graffity/panty&Stocking style. 10/10
- Different levels, a sinking port, being chased by a tank-train, Elevator, moving raft, ...
- Customization everywhere. Main characters, weapon skins, upgrades, make enemies stronger one x one
- lots of unlocks that keep you motivated on going and going.
- Variety of enemies, each one with their own strategies
- Good number of playable characters each one with a unique fighting style. Maze, Mecha/robot dog, katana, laser, knives, fists,...
- The right ammount of difficulty, making you sometimes farm a little to get stronger and beat that boss.

"CONS" (most of them because, you know, right now IT'S EARLY ACCESS, you know what u're getting into, will update when it's finished):
- You'll find some bug here and there. They're getting fixed.
- Lacks a little explanation about things, you need to figure out by yourself what "X" thing does.
- It would be nice to have some story between the characters, when rescuing/unlocking them and such. Would give them more personality/lore. And psst, that sells.
- Using a controller, inputs get a little laggy in some stages. With keyboard they don't. But you can get thorugh it upgrading your attack speed. It needs fixing though.

So, if you are like me and loved the simpsons arcade, golden axe, streets of rage, turtles lost in time, captain commando and Gekido. And even more if you like cool designs, you're gonna love this game.

This one deserves more attention and I'm glad I'm supporting the devs into making a great finished game.

Soda Girls is a pretty starightforward beat-em-up with a neat/unique artstyle and very smooth animation.

It is a little basic at the moment, but the dev is listening to player concerns and constantly updating/improving the game in significant ways.

It's a pretty good beat 'em up game, the art style is great. Too bad it's abandoned by the developer due to unknown reason.
But you could play the game from start to the end. It's just missing some little bit extra feature.
Not going to impact your gameplay.

From what I've played so far, it's a decent enough showing, but with a projection of only 2-3 months in EA, it's got a LOT of room left for improvement and not a lot of chance.

Combat is repetitive and without depth.
-Only 1 attack button with 2 possible combos: 1 for Mashing attack and 1 for attacking at just the right time to deflect an enemies attack.
-Other than attack, your only commands are Jump (which has it's own attack), dodge and heal, in which you freeze for an uncomfortable amount of time to drink a soda.
-No I-frames from getting hit, meaning you can get caught by an enemies attack and either get swarmed by his allies and die or, in the case of some enemies, get killed by a single enemy's multiphased attack and die.
-To top it all off, the game feels incredibly stiff, with very notable ending lag after every attack, jump or dodge.

I only got about 10 levels in and didn't see it getting any better, so I refunded it for now. Maybe it'll be fixed later, but as it stands, I wouldn't recommend. The artstyle is cute, though.
