Batman™: Arkham Origins is the next installment in the blockbuster Batman: Arkham videogame franchise. Developed by WB Games Montréal, the game features an expanded Gotham City and introduces an original prequel storyline set several years before the events of Batman: Arkham Asylum and Batman: Arkham City, the first two critically acclaimed games of the franchise. Taking place before the rise of Gotham City’s most dangerous criminals, the game showcases a young and unrefined Batman as he faces a defining moment in his early career as a crime fighter that sets his path to becoming the Dark Knight.
Key Features:
- The Arkham Story Begins: Batman: Arkham Origins features a pivotal tale set on Christmas Eve where Batman is hunted by eight of the deadliest assassins from the DC Comics Universe. Players become an early-career Batman as he encounters for the first time many of the characters that shape his future.
- Enhanced Detective Mode: Think like Batman with an all-new Case File system that allows players to analyze seemingly impossible-to-solve crime reconstructions in real time. Combining Batman’s cowl sensors with the Batcomputer, players can digitally recreate crimes and study detailed simulation of the act as it happened.
- Gotham City will learn to fear Batman: Take back the sprawling streets of Gotham years before its transformation into Arkham City. Glide above or battle your way through new and ever more dangerous districts in the quest for justice. Prevent crimes in progress, take down gangs of violent new criminals and explore deadly new locations, from the impoverished streets to the penthouses of Gotham’s wealthy.
- Gotham’s Most Wanted: The city streets are filled with more than just Black Mask’s assassins. Locate and take down Gotham’s most violent and dangerous criminals to earn unique upgrades.
- Lethal New Enemies: Fight new foes such as the Armored Enforcer, the Martial Artist and more – each of which challenge players to approach Batman’s FreeFlow Combat scenarios in different ways. Classic FreeFlow combat is expanded with every new opponent – and with Batman’s abilities to engage them.
- New Gadgets: Utilize Batman’s signature gadgets or take advantage of powerful new additions such as the Remote Claw, the Concussion Detonator and more. Use the Remote Claw to create new routes by deploying strategic tightropes or directly attack enemies by stringing them up from vantage points. Ready the Concussion Detonator to stun and disorient groups of opponents in close combat.
- New and Familiar Characters: Experience a fresh take on iconic Batman characters including Black Mask, Penguin, Deathstroke, Bane, Deadshot, Anarky, Captain Gordon, The Joker, Copperhead, Firefly and others yet to be revealed.

I'm not sure why people don't talk about this Arkham game, because it's pretty good! Being the first one chronologically, it does a good job as a jumping in point for the series. Yeah, sure, Kevin Conroy isn't here and Bruce is instead voiced by Roger Craig Smith. But hey, Roger knocks it out of the park and does an excellent job. I don't have a ton to say, because it really is just more Arkham. If you love Arkham and don't mind playing a prequel, this one's totally worth your time.
My big issues are that it didn't necessarily blow me away. It's a great game, don't get me wrong, but I'm not going to be singing to the masses about Arkham Origins if you get what I mean. It's also extremely buggy and I often had to reload checkpoints or go in and out of the main menu in order to fix things. Not great. And those bugs persisted in the DLC of Cold, Cold Heart as well.
I guess I'll talk about the DLC as well to expand on this a bit. Cold Cold Heart is okay. It's just more Arkham Origins, and that's fine. It's around 3-4 hours long with a mostly linear story with only 1 and a half new areas. There's only about 7 missions total (going off IGN's walkthrough listing - I'd say it's more around 5 maybe?) and the cryo enemies are really annoying to dodge. I don't know if I'm doing something wrong or if this game was just not meant to be at a high fps, but those cryo enemies were really difficult for me.
I guess that also brings up something I want to mention. I love WB's "Flowmotion" combat a ton. It's really fun. But I've always had an issue with how it functions whenever you throw enemies at the player that have abilities that disrupt the flow of it. Having enemies that require Batman to stun them are annoying when you have to counter an enemy behind you as you're hitting the stunned enemy, for example. I think Shadow of Mordor and War handle the flowmotion much better.
I also take issue with the stealth. Stealth Takedowns are nice, but it feels very... one-note. I suppose the best comparison I can make is Spider-Man, where I actually love the stealth. And Spider-Man very obviously takes tons of inspiration from Arkham. One thing I love about Spider-Man's stealth are the Perch Takedowns. Arkham Origins has Perch Takedowns but you can only do 1 per perch, and then the hitbox for allowing you to do so is very small. What I'm trying to say here is that I wish there was a little more variance to the stealth gameplay because it feels dull at best and lackluster at worst.
The times the stealth combat feels like its at its worst are during the final bosses of both the main story and the DLC. Both of these bosses are anti-climactic unfortunately since you have to utilize the stealth gameplay to defeat them. They both form lukewarm conclusions for their finales, which is ultimately disappointing.
That said, I think Arkham Origins came out at a weird time because it doesn't really have any right to be so overlooked. It's a good game, but it is very much simply "more Arkham but it's a prequel". At the time this game came out, the PS4 and Xbox One launches were only around 2 weeks away, and it wasn't going to launch on those platforms, unfortunately. That definitely feels like part of the reason it flew under the radar.
Great game, but unfortunately I have to give it some flak for the bugs and some design decisions.
Score: 84
Im mad that this game has probably the best bosses in the series. I wish we could have gotten these with the quality of story in Arkham knight, but I digress.
Too derivative of Arkham City, but seeing as how this technically is the only modern way to play this, I recommend. It does have some merit.
a bit buggy at the start but its the second best arkham game
A great attempt by Splash Damage forced to make this under pressure. Raw emotion stands out here. Heavily underrated.
Great game, even after several years released. The bad thing in my opinion that is the story are too short if you just focus on finishing the game.
It has some FPS stutters and some bugs but if you can look past that it really runs quite well considering this game was poorly optimized for PC. By no means is it horrible. A tip is to remove PhysX and to cap the frames using hardware vs the Vsync in the game options. It decreased the stutters (mainly when gliding) by quite a bit for me. I am running a AMD 3600 with a Vega 64 for reference.
I love just how story rich this game is, I also like how you have the option of side missions that you can choose to do as well. And the fact that you can do them at any time is just amazing. It gives you the opportunity to delve into the story or complete those missions without consequence of what order you choose to do them in. Also, I'm sure this is just me, but the graphics are amazing.! I have not seen anything like this in a long time! Great job!
This game is so slept on, great soundtrack, decent story, love the new mechanics (electric gloves), and it's just Arkham. 9/10
Love the game play. The main storyline seems too short. Then there's really no point to run around and do side missions anymore after that.
Has some of my favorite bossfights in the whole Arkham series, at least the ones I've played. The Deathstroke and Bane bossfights were awesome, and the Killer Croc fight at the begin was a fun tutorial boss. I played it multiple times through on steam deck and only had one problem during the Killer Croc fight, it'd glitch out sometimes forcing me to restart the game. Otherwise it runs great tho
Underrated Batman game. Great Look for character design- one small irk, all his gadgets are reflective of his city gadget which creates a huge plot hole.
Contrary to the public consensus, the black sheep of the Arkham games stands on equal footing with Rocksteady's trilogy. My recollection of Arkham Origins was a bland story wallpapered over an Arkham City clone. While this rings true with gameplay copy and pasted from the 2011 game, what stands out here (and what I think makes AO worth playing today) is its thematic complexity. While every entry in the primary trilogy does (probably) have a better story, Origins delves further than any of those games into Batman's outlook and his relationship with justice, law, and crime. The game shows us an early-days Batman who has yet to develop any relationship with any of the rogues gallery or classic characters like Jim Gordon. We watch these relationships develop throughout the plot alongside's Batman's approach to crime-fighting during an upheaval in Gotham's criminal underbelly where a new generation of supervillains supplants the mobsters and hustlers of the past. While the Arkham trilogy is about Batman being Batman, this is a story about exploring and questioning what that means. If that sounds at all interesting or you liked Arkham City's gameplay and could go for seconds, then I recommend this game
this is the worst reviewed batman Arkham games and honestly i loved this game its a favorite game of mine now. the only thing id change is the batman suits having to be unlocked through challenges. and that you cant pick new game plus difficulty which goes for all the games.
Best story in the series. Though I would've preferred the Black Mask reveal not be the direction they went in, I think it functions fine. If it were up to me, I would've split this into two stories (and either two games or a game and a DLC), one with Black Mask and the assassins, and one with you know who. My biggest disappointment with the game is that the 8 assassins aren't front and center. Most of the assassins are fought during the campaign, but not all, which is a little telling about how important they are to the story. Croc refers the "Black Mask's assassins" as if they're separate from himself, but he's later listed as one of the 8, and since he's clearly much more of a mercenary than an assassin, and is beaten in a fairly easy boss fight right away, it feels more like they ran out of ideas for characters and just tossed him into the pile. Electrocutioner's fight, while funny, again detracts from the potential of having something with more effort put into it. Deadshot and Shiva's side missions are encountered during the campaign, but actually fighting them is relegated to side missions that don't need to be completed for the campaign. Overall, the assassins feel like big villains in their own right, just distractions to slow down Batman from pursuing the main plot. It would've been neat to see them relentlessly pursuing Batman throughout the game, perhaps with boss fights that include more than one of them at a time, as they divide their attention between Batman and each other. I'd prefer this to them taking turns getting their asses kicked whenever the story needs a bit of filler to pad out the run time. That being said, their characterization and inclusion isn't something I'd call an outright issue.
The biggest issue with the gameplay is that on occasion, the game will ignore your input during combat and allow an enemy to hit you, despite blocking or dodging. It feels like something went wrong when they ported over the combat from City, which didn't have this happen anywhere near as frequently. However, it's not common enough to causes any large issues during the main story. It's much more of an issue in challenge maps, where combat encounters are much longer and the unfair hits start to screw you over. This creates and unfair situation for the player where luck becomes a factor in whether you make it through a combat challenge, rather than being solely skill based. Outside of that, the gameplay on the whole is mostly City with slight improvements. If I had to recommend only one of the Arkham games, it'd be this one.
The main campaign and the freeze DLC are fun, more arkham city gameplay so if you liked that, then this is right up that alley. The online can likewise still be enjoyed, but with server mask created by players. So if you want to play with others you need friends or to make some. Over all i'd say this is worth the money.
While I do recommend Batman Arkham Origins, it comes with some caveats. First off, this is probably one of the weakest installments of the Arkham series just barely above Arkham Knight, it's basic story line is and interesting take on how Batman and the Joker first met, but it also has Joker meet Harley Quinn at Blackgate Prison rather than at Arkham Asylum and has an incredibly dumb story beat with Bane that destroys the whole idea of superheroes and secret identities. Arkham Origins was clearly rushed and while the issues have long since been patched you'll still notice technical issues and bugs and it is basically a buggier version of Arkham City. Arkham Origins' strongest asset is that it doesn't fix what isn't already broken from previous games in its combat and predator systems. Arkham Origins is worth checking out if you're a fan of Batman Arkham Asylum and City.
Honestly, this game is EXTREMELY underrated. I found the game was enjoyable and don't understand all the hate. The Deathstroke boss fight was peak, Bane had the best design and Black Mask finally got the recognition he deserved, even if his side quest boss battle was bad. I really enjoyed playing as a young and angry Batman. The Mr Freeze Dlc is also the best Dlc out of all the games. 10/10 from me. Would Recommend.
Best batman look, best batman atmosphere, best batman story game i've ever played, the bad thing about this game is that Gotham city is built so badly that I didn't have any interest in doing the side missions, and the theme when roaming around the city was torture, but the main story is so great it hyped me a lot
Really cool game. Man Ham Origins. Something In The Way.
I like the scenes with Batman and Alfred. I like Roger Craig Smith as Batman. It's kinda annoying that it resets your suit everytime you exit and come back. The DLC is cool and fun. I didn't play online so no thoughts on that. I wish the XE suit was unlockable after you get it in the DLC. I liked free roaming and doing detective work and taking care of crimes, it really made me FEEL like The Batman.
Before i played this game i played Arkham city on my ps5 an i loved it. so when i played this game i thought it would not be as good as Arkham city but i was wrong THIS GAME IS AMAZING. i loved everything. the boss fights and combat was more fun and smoother than arkham city it just felt better. i really liked how big the map is the story is great but not as good as Arkham city. but it was still great. i really liked the suits theirs alot more than Arkham city. =)
It's an great game. Solid story, with twists and all. The idea of a younger Batman and his early struggles is an interesting concept, for sure. Gameplay is pretty much the same like its predecessors.
The only thing that's annoying to me in this game is the bugs and the glitches. One of the most fatal ones is the void when entering My Alibi's private room, right after Batman defeated Bird. Everything suddenly went black, the resources won't load, even though Batman is still able to roam around a bit. Restarting only made it worse, since it just puts Batman in an endless walking state in that void. I tried every method I find on the internet to fix the issue, unfortunately it's just unsuccessful for me and I had to start a new save file.
8/10, I'd say.
Don't skip this game. Hands down an excellent game. Great boss fights, deeply emotional story, fun combat, peak.
First playthrough review time.
Batman: Arkham Origins is an impressive action-adventure game developed by Warner Bros and Splash Damage, released in 2013 as the third entry in the franchise.
The story provides a deep exploration with well-developed characters and an engaging plot. The gameplay is engaging, offering a variety of challenges and activities. While there are some minor bugs in the graphics and gameplay, they do not significantly affect the overall experience. For graphical stutter fixes, please refer to the guide below.
Overall, the game offers a compelling narrative, solid gameplay, and good visuals.

There are no words; the games plot and game play were woven masterfully into the map and graphic designs. There are not many games that are able to make you truely feel like you are living inside the game. Anyone who read the comics as a kid, or watched the cartoons, can truly appreciate this game like no other. Well done to DC games to this historic tetralogy. (Although most of their movies suck. The games are much more cinematic and comic accurate. :D )
Great game. Flawless combat system. Good villians. REALLY good combat system, Joker`s character was perfect, and the game has a great combat system.
(forgot to mention that it has a phenomenal combat system)
This game is one of the fun games I play . The story so far is amazing, there are good action momants that could be easy or hard to different players you know. But over all at lest try this game at lest once if you can. :D
Which Arkham game has the best combat system? I jerk off to amazing digital circus fart porn. My personal favorite is Origins.
This game has the most sauce out of all the Arkham titles and if it had the level of polish that Rocksteady's entries did it would easily be the best game in the series. The only thing that holds this game back for me is the bugs, as I felt most of the hits I took in combat or losses of my combo were due to Batman just deciding to do something completely unrelated to my input. The additions to combat are amazing and is definitely the most satisfying Freeflow has ever felt. Predator encounters feel nearly identical to Arkham City with no complaints from me here. The story is the most engaging of the series and is an impressively good Batman adaptation. The art-style takes a pivot from the stylized realism of the other entries and looks a lot more comic book-ish which I love. All I want in this life is an Origins sequel that isn't on VR only.
Batman: Arkham Origins is a solid entry in the Arkham series, offering more of the same addictive gameplay fans have come to expect. While it may not reach the heights of Arkham City, it's still a worthwhile experience for fans of the franchise.
Loved playing this game, it was filled with great story-telling, Cinematics, action and fighting. Despite the little bugs here and there, I was fully immersed playing this goated Game. A true reminder of how beautiful Batman games are and how his story is portrayed.
Frame rate skipping is horrible, and shouldn't be an issue with an 11 year old game on a RTX 4070. Half of my game time was spent trying to get this game to run well, and after consulting the internet and not getting any working solutions, I quit. I know I'd have fun with it if it would just work
WB Games Montreal eventually went on after this game to make Gotham Knights. LOL
It's easily the worst of the arkham games. It's not particularly bad, but the levels of quality and polish aren't up to the same standards as the other games.
so far the story is meh and i recommend playing on controller but it is a very fun games
Very good game, good story fun game play. brings back memories from childhood love it
deathstroke is making me wanna kill myself so badly but good game i think
This game is one of the best arkham games i played so far!!! The combat is actually crazyy i didn't expect it to be this great.
As of now i'm playing as slow as possible because the map is so interesting, the fast travel is such a great addition to this game and some of the cutscenes were fucking amazing!!! 10/10 so far :>
The Boss fights are top tier The story is Great Gliding is not the best but overall i'd recommend batman arkham orgins arkham knight doesnt have any cool boss fighs tbh
Good game with an excellent introduction to the story of batman
This is the best batman arkham game story wise, the story is actually emotional with it's characters that im actually invested into and it isn't just batman has to find out bad guy's plane and then stop him like how the other games stories feels. yes the game play is just city's but with like a few new gadgets that are hits or miss. I feel this is still a pretty underrated game being one of the best arkham game, 8/10
