I have never liked hunting games. I don't like the idea of hunting.
This game is beautiful, relaxing, and I love working with my dog companion.
11/10 this game somehow got me excited to kill animals.
Great game. ive been playing off and on for several years and really love the the detail and thought put into designing this game. i would like to see a few things added for example; thermal scope, battery powered vehicle that would not alert animals as easily, and a way to cross save between platforms. i played for a couple of years on xbox then switched to pc and had to start completely over. very frustrating. thanks to all the hard work the developers put in to keep this game current. For those complaing in the comments that this game is boring, keep in ming that this is more a simulator than a game. i live and hunt in mississippi and there are times you get out to a deer stand and wait for hours hoping to see something. its a process. Hi, bought this game for my grandpa like 2 months ago, he totally loves it, he was hunter in real life but because his old age and illness ( bladder infection ) he is very limited, he spent half of his life hunting and then he couldnt, until now, this game has made it possible to give him a nearly same experience of hunting, he is playing it every night and now he wants me to buy him DLCs, I am so happy for him, and for this game, thank you all.
WASTE OF MONEY you can't do anything without paying for a DLC or spend hours playing this game to get a better rife
Kinda fun. Worth the purchase if it is on sale for less than $10, because you're likely to put in another $20-$30 in DLC if you enjoy the game. If you don't you'll easily get 5-10 hours of entertainment before moving onto a different game.
Biggest Negative? My opinion is the bullet ballistics, they're pretty bad and in no way realistic. Expansion rounds like soft-points or hollow-points are useless are barely pen. Weapons that the game considers low-caliber are in no way low-caliber, unless we are talking about the .22LR. I understand this is a game that needs to be balanced around weapons.... but there is no reason why a .243 can't be used against elk or black bear.
Other minor gripes are lack of quick transportation before finding campsites, unless you purchase an ATV DLC. Lack of "time-forwarding" methods unless you return to a camp or purchase a tent DLC. Low variety of rifles unless you purchase multiple different weapon pack and reserve DLCs. Basically, if you have a problem, it can be solves by throwing money at the devs and purchasing a $5.00 DLC that should have just been in the base game.
Biggest Positives? Honestly, the TruRac System is pretty cool. The maps themselves are beautiful. The quests keep you progressing and exploring the map.
Perfect if you want to relax and just explore around the map with your mates while sometimes hunt some animals.
If you are thinking of buying this game without the dlcs just don't the game feels unplayable without them
decent game you just have to pay for EVERYTHING. if you dont pay like 200$ for dlc then the game is boring as heck. i regret spending 190$ on this game
It's a NO even though it does has good things and I do play the game mainly because I spent money on it and I don't want to think I wasted my money. So I'm just comforting (read fooling) myself basically.
If you want a realistic shooting experience, which IMHO should be one of the core features of a hunting game, look elsewhere. The weapon sway is way too exaggerated even with skills and perks, you will NEVER be able to steady your aim even with breath control, you just reduce the sway and that's NOT how it works IRL, NOT AT ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! No bipods or ability to rest weapons on structures or objects like your own backpack or adopting specific stances and holding the weapon in specific ways to stabilize aim. Just look at real hunting footage and you will understand what I'm talking about if you don't have IRL shooting experience. The zeroing is FAR from what real zeroing is all about. Just reducing the unrealistic weapon sway and allowing us to stabilize aim completely when holding breath should be enough if they can't (don't know how to) implement the advanced stuffs. Many items are locked and you have to unlock them by leveling up your character and/or the rating of the weapon in question and it is a HELL of a grind for certain items and the cost to purchase is "phew really dudes???" !!! You cannot do certain basic hunting tricks like using voice to attract the attention of your targeted animal and fix it in place just long enough to make the shot (Red Dead Online does have this implemented and it's NOT a hunting game while COTW IS a hunting game!!!) but you can scare them off by whistling LOL. Many essential items are available only in paid DLCs while some of them should have been definitely available in base game. The 2 default maps are not beginner friendly and the more interesting maps have to be purchased. Same things for DLC weapons, especially bows and crossbows...paid DLC weapon pack 1 for example. As for missions, do yourself a favour, skip them entirely by turning them off in the gameplay settings even if they do reward with money and XP. You will be better off free hunting and still get money and XP.
Having said that, the game is beautiful in terms of scenery, the animals are very well done even if sometimes they do get stuck in objects like trees, rocks etc...so play it not as a serious hunting game but just as a way to pass time and shoot some animals here and there. This should not be what a hunting game is all about but this is what The Hunter - Call Of The Wild is for me, unfortunately. I've spent enough money on the game so no more DLCs for me, unless they make changes that I would like to see in the game. Happy "unrealistic shooting" hunting to you all!!!
For some reason it wont save my progress anymore. I will play for a couple of hours and watch it save them exit to menu then exit to desktop. i come back the next day and back to the same spot like i didnt do anything. Love how my hours played update but none of the progress is there.
My friend couldn't kill a single animal after shooting several of them at least three times with a modern sniper rifle and kept chasing them around the map for an hour, trying to have at least one kill.
And then there was me with a f*cking flintlock rifle from American Civil War, killing every animal I see with a lead ball in one shot.
Perfectly balanced, very nice.
Every time I want to play this game there is an approx 20GB update.
OMFG, Expansive Worlds... hire someone who knows how to streamline this. The listed game requirements are 60GB HD space and I've already downloaded more than that in updates. WHAT ARE YOU DOING??? Are you forcing people to download files they already have? Make this make sense. Fix your game AND fix your Steam listing.
This one sat in my library for years. I only wish I had given it a shot sooner! Awesome blend of stealthy, yet relaxing game play. Missions are great to set you off in the right direction if you're stuck, but this game is wide open to fit whatever mood you're in. Honestly, I never thought a hunting game could be this fun - 70 hours and feel like I'm just getting started.

wanted to love this game but youll find yourself walking around for 30min not seeing a single animal and when you do, it just sees you from a hundred meters away and runs away out of sight. Then you have to crouch walk several hundred meters to maybe see it again. When you take the shot, the animal doesnt die and runs away leaving a small blood trail which you follow for another 20min and never find it. repeat this for a couple of hours and you realise that having a realistic hunting experience (idk i have never hunted) is the most boring and not fun kind of game.
bought the base game for 90% sale. yall can try if you have a the patience of crouch walking through a forest for 45min and seeing nothing but trees.
I bought this on sale for 2.95 and still wanted a refund after. Was a genuinely a boring game that just isnt for me, the map is big and all but its hard to travel around and hunting is even more slow paced. This game requires serious dedication and patience that i cannot find in me. The multiplayer is even worse because the thing doesnt even have voice chat. 0/10 never been more bored in my entire life.
Walking around for hours on end looking for something to shoot. You find it, shoot it 5 times and it runs off into the forest with a "Very Low" blood trail. You spend the next 20min following the blood trail and you eventually give up because you realize its pointless. You spend 3 days looking for a single coyote, waiting 150m from resting spots at the time stretch they're suppose to be there, you hear one single warning call, use your predator bait and you all you find is a trail of paw prints that go back and forth to each other.
Endless walking, occasional animal sightings, and a DLC shop that feels more alive than the forests. Hunting? More like paying to hike. 🤦♂️

My husband played this game before I did. He got really into it, and I always wondered why he enjoyed playing it so much and for so long. I would say all the time "it's just a hunting game". Now that's a running joke for us. At the time of this review Im nearing 700 hours in this "just a hunting game". I eventually broke down and got it on a good sale one day so that I could play multiplayer with my husband and spend time with him. I figured even if I didn't like it I got it on a sale so no biggie. I ended up falling in love with it. It's not my type of game at all, yet somehow it has become my most played game on Steam. Most of the maps are absolutely stunning, its incredibly realistic, the animals are vast and beautiful. Its immersive, challenging yet relaxing. Unfortunately you have to buy most of the maps as dlcs, and I usually recommend waiting until a sale and snatching them up, they arent too terribly expensive and so worth it. If youre unsure if you like a map, or dont want to buy one yet, you can go on a multiplayer server and test it out. The stories can be fun, there is plenty of areas to explore and tons of steam achievements. Being able to play in multiple different ways is enjoyable, I can play for half an hour or 10 hours straight. It's just incredible in my opinion. The downsides are sometimes glitches happen, you have to buy a lot of stuff (guns, lodges, rtvs, dogs, etc) separately, but with sales and how much I enjoy the game, they are minor cons.
having hundreds of hours on PS4 and on PC should tell you enough.
There's NOTHING like getting that first rare, or first diamond, or even better that amazing Great One.
PLEASE purchase this game, you WILL love it!
The game is fairly boring slower than actual hunting and the animals are so unrealistically skittish that when I cornered a fucking moose it refused to attack and just ran into the rock. Also a game like this should not have a skill tree. don't buy unless it's on sale

Wow, come on guys, really? This game has so much potential, it really does. I want to love this game, but studios like this one just absolutely ruin it! The Hunter: Call of the Wild, is a great game. Its very fun, relaxing, and, a good time with friends. Why, when this game seems pretty popular, are there so many god damn DLCs? Hell the day of writing this, 3 more were released! 2 of which should just be in the base game! Why is it, items like dogs and basic as hell guns, are not just in the base game? I get adding reserves, certain types of vehicles, etc, but dogs and basic guns? Id almost bet this game was made by Paradox Studios with how many there are. Its ridiculous companies are so greedy they have to ruin a game with shoving microtransactions down your throat every 5 minutes. I really, REALLY, wanted to like this game because of the relaxing atmosphere and, in my opinion, fun game play. Why not release some FREE content every so often like actual good studios (Hello Games), they still have returning players and are gaining profit. But no, instead we get another dog, a reserve, and generic bolt actions.

It's a decent game if you know what you're doing, but there's so many things that should be just base game. Like the ATV for example, you're gonna be walking/crawling majority of your gameplay so there should be at least a way to buy it with the in-game currency and not waste money on something that shouldn't be a money grab. The unlocks in this game take too long to get as you have to have too many hours to get everything. If you actually wanna play the game you "have to" buy DLCs so your experience is actually manageable. Personally, if you have time to waste or too much time on your hands play this game. If you're looking for something to relax with and you're not a hunter, you're out of luck. It's a 6/10 experience for me.
I really tried to give this game a shot but it's a walking simulator. From what i see, you need good guns and perks to have fun but you don't get that at the start.
The default gun feels like a pea shooter and you can't buy new guns even if you have the money for it. It forces you to use the default rifle to level up your rifle score.
You should refund the game before the 2 hours mark because it doesn't get better.
The game has so much potential but it sucks because you can shoot a moose in the heart at 50yrds with a .338 lapua and it will run for 3 miles and then after you spend an hr + tracking it you will finally see it again then you shoot it again and it will continue running another mile then maybe die or you'll have to shoot it in the head and that ruins the score and if you shoot an animal more than 2 times you fail the challenge for the animal... not realistic at all as far as gun play or damage to animals..
So realistic that it takes 37 shots of 357 mag, 8 shots from a rifle and 8 12ga shots to INJURE a bison for you to chase it at a snails pace for 2.56km before giving up. Run speed is a mall shuffle not a run and firearms are ridiculously underpowered to the point they aren't even close to realistic. Apparently shooters have Parkinsons and can't hold a firearm steady at all. This game is a joke. The dev team needs to fix this before they get sued or something because this isn't close to hunting at all.
I'm not going to lie, I wanted to play a hunting game but for some reason this game is buggy. I wait a long time to center in on an animal and when im ready the scope on my sniper wont be equipped to my gun but it says its equipped. when I visit a new area to hunt my entire HUD is bugged and I cant access anything. I got so tired of all these bugs I stopped playing in general and I just got it yesterday! hopefully they fix all these bugs because the game is not enjoyable.
if they gave this game away for FREE and threw in most of the DLC's on top of that it would still be too much money.
it just sucks.. i walked around for a bit, found the first tower.. got sent on a mission to post flyers... cool... did that. got sent to locate another cabin,, yup, found it.. got sent on a mission to help set up trainer's repeal-er site.. sure did.. new mission find a old uranium mine... wow.. NOT one single hunt. no experience points, zero missions points...
I did shoot a Bison... NOTHING,,, it walked away... OK, I am at level 1.. I see that. I shoot a deer... it ran away.. I tracked it for a while,, NEVER could catch it,, followed a blood train forever... NOTHING.
game is NOT about Hunting.. game is about wasting TIME and MONEY.
I find this game to be incredibly relaxing and incredibly exciting at the same time: Relaxing when exploring and just taking in the sights, exciting when tracking, lining up the shots, and landing that perfect hit. I really enjoy the hunt for greater and greater trophies, and rare fur patterns, to fill the trophy lodges and the variety in environments between the various reserves. I will say, a lot of this game's content is locked behind DLC purchases, but if you buy a bundle initially, or are willing to invest in some of the DLCs, this is a great game to sink hundreds of hours in to.
This is the worst hunting game I have ever played. Succeeding in the game is reliant on buying the DLC. You wont be able to track 90% of the animals you shoot unless you buy the additional packages with real money. Once you shoot the animals, good luck finding it. The game will glitch and have the animal tracks reverse and disappear. In an effort to make it more realistic they make it an unfun hunting game and more of a hiking simulator with some animals once in a while.
Want to track an animal you shot, buy the DLC.
Want to drive a four-wheeler, buy the DLC.
Want to go to more than one map, buy the DLC.
Want to use blinds/tents/stands, buy the DLC.
All basic hunting task you would do cost extra money.
Overall this game isn't even worth a few dollars. Mobile games are better than this broken game.
If you're looking to be extremely bored for a good 90% of the time, this might be a game for you! Just one big walking/crawling simulator. Takes ages to track anything, even when completely on the ground making 0 noise and taking account for your "smell cone" stuff still runs away if it's within 100m of you, so you usually don't even see the creatures. If you do manage to find and shoot something, even if you shoot it directly in the brain it'll likely just run away. You'll spend 30+ minutes tracking and chasing after the thing, losing the trail 50% of the time anyway, especially when starting out. The only positive I have is that the game is visually beautiful, that's about it. Glad I got it on sale, but that was still $2 wasted. I really tried to like it, but it's awful. 2/10 Do not recommend in the slightest.

There is a reason the game is 2 dollars on sale. If you don't shoot an animal in the clean heart good luck you will be going on a 40 Minute journey find the animal just to take a second shot and go on another trek for 30 minutes. Game is 5/10 on realism. Save your time and valuable money. Looks fun for 2 dollars but not worth the time. They also put the only transportation behind a paywall, like all the other hunting maps, better scopes/ guns. Just a sad money grubbing pit.

Can't recommend despite nearly 3,000 hours. Devs ignore player feedback and instead focus on microtransactions. Game is constantly full of bugs, and the devs are constantly changing the state of the game for the worst. It's been a glorified beta since release. Your money is better spent on other hunting games, this is a waste of cash.

Your reply serves only as an attempt to sow doubt in the mind of someone reading my review.
Let me reiterate as clearly as possible: you squandered years of direct input, both solicited and unsolicited. You do what you want, but what you want amounts only to that which will make you a quick buck. The game still suffers from crippling bugs that return patch after patch. You can't let the state of the game settle for more than 3-6 months at a time without implementing major changes to the fundamental gameplay loop. You've got so much spaghetti code you could feed an entire Italian family reunion. You overtly disrespect player time and lie about the value of our input. You've lost me as a customer.
Frankly, you should be embarrassed and ashamed of your conduct as developers.
wanted something relaxing and nice, got aggravation instead. had to look up guides, all said: buy DLC maps AND weapons, otherwise good luck.
if you like walking simulators, buy only the base game - literally tells you the time it takes to walk distances, most are 30mins+ if you stay in an area... 2hour+ for anything longer

if you want to find 1 animal per 3 hours, buy the base game
if you want said animal to run as soon as you get within 30 square miles, buy the base game. either crawl 500 feet in an hour to still not being able to see the animal, or take 1 step and have it bolt like there's a 'buy 1 get 3 free' sale on hookers and blow at walmart.
if you want to shoot something, do little to no damage, wont kill or have it bleed out: run around with starter weapons
or just pay to win, buy dlc weapon packs to annihilate animals, or buy maps with decent to good animal density...
maybe i need more patience, but for someone who wanted to relax and enjoy life a little, this isnt for me. i would have better luck hunting IRL with a megaphone and a spork
I played this a lot on xbox before coming to steam - worth grabbing the game on sale and working your way up to purchasing the DLCS. I love playing late at night with youtube going in the background and zoning out. If you're a hunting fan you'll enjoy it, it takes practice and there is a learning curve but you dont have to compete with anyone unless you're into the multiplayer which i am not.
Has some glitches but what game doesn't, plus it is amusing when they happen.

The game was not realistic! They need to work more on realistic animations, clothing, weapons, aiming and more.... I not recomended this game, beacouse i am the hunter in a real life and this is far from reality for now.
This is a game on the brink of being a masterpiece and it faceplants at the finish line. There's minor flaws like buggy terrain and poorly balanced weapons (the most expensive gun can't drop a moose by shooting it in the chest), but those issues aren't enough to turn me off from it. What really irks me is how much wasted potential there is. They made these giant beautiful maps and then they put some boring larper hunting sim on top of it with bland repetitive animals. I want to kill cryptids and dinosaurs. I want horror themed easter eggs with deer that have 8 legs or something. It's just the same 5 or 6 animals copy pasted over 2 giant maps, and that leads into my real issue with the game. I haven't played a wider variety of maps because they're all locked behind dlc. It's not just a couple, if you only own the base game you're locked out of like 80% of the content. This is Paradox Interactive levels of predatory scummy behavior. I can't recommend a game that kneecaps itself this way.
