Great game that suffers from a brutal combination of aging somewhat poorly and creating a niche of games that is now painfully oversaturated. Ubisoft not only milking the Far Cry franchise for more than all it has + structuring all their open world games around the same "Climb tower, clear bases, clean up collectibles, repeat" formula makes it easy to forget what Far Cry 3 did and how awesome it was to play for the first time. This game won't blow you away if you've played any open world collectathon contemporaries, but if you go into it to see where the DNA that inspired 50+ games comes from, you'll probably like it a lot.
This game would be so much better if Uplay wasn't required. I can't launch the game through the steam client because it says my copy isn't authorized. I'm so glad Ubisoft is in financial ruin.

The Game that started made the franchise what it is today. This is now considered a Cult Classic.
This game is a timeless masterpiece. I was thrilled that achievements finally came for this game, but all achievements synced from my Ubisoft Connect account to my Steam account, and I can't reset them or start fresh. Ubisoft, I implore you, please remove this feature or let me reset them!
Once great game ruined by ubisofts shitty launcher. Having to sign in everytime to play an offline game is stupid. I lost my 8+ hour save due to uplaycloud sync issues. Ruined any good memories i had playing this game.

Far Cry 3. This game could be seen as the start of the modern Far Cry formula, and I'm surprised I didn't write a review for it back when I first played it, over a decade ago. Now that I've returned to it thanks to the addition of Steam achievements, I feel it's as good a time to review it as any. I'll admit, however, that I might be a bit fuzzy on the details, as it's been a while since I completed it, but I remember having a good time with it.
The story follows Jason, a young adult who finds himself trapped in the Rook Islands while vacationing with his brothers and friends in Southeast Asia. Having been captured by pirates, he manages to escape and joins the Rakyat, inhabitants of the islands, as he tries to rescue his friends. It's a pretty cool story, even if Jason is not very likeable at first, with some stand-out characters like Vaas and his definition of insanity.
Gameplay wise, it's a first-person shooter, obviously. And as I said in my opening paragraph, this game was the start of the modern day Ubisoft formula for Far Cry games; while the previous game already featured an open world, this one added a lot of features that'd become a staple of the franchise. There's hunting animals for crafting ingredients, the now traditional (and sometimes hated) towers to reveal the map, a grand, eccentric villain (see Vaas). Personally, I don't dislike the "Ubisoft formula" as much as some people, and I kinda enjoyed these elements when I played the game. Then again, it was the first Far Cry game to use said elements, and I haven't really played the more recent ones.
In terms of graphics, the game looked pretty good back then, but I'm not sure it has aged that well. Even then, I remember loving how vibrant the colours were, especially during certain sequences in the story. And the Rook Islands are a great place to explore. I will say, one aspect I loved about the game is the soundtrack; while I haven't really played the game in years, I do listen to its OST from time to time.
All in all, a solid game which I can recommend.
Probably the best Far Cry game I played this years ago on the PS3 and I don't remember the game looking this amazing this is why PC gaming is the best.

Far Cry 3 is a game where you’ll have to survive on a tropical island filled not just with palm trees but also bandits who always seem to know where you’re hiding. It’s a first-person shooter that combines freedom, a dramatic story, and that constant feeling that the wildlife wants to eat you alive.
The story follows Jason Brody — an ordinary guy who suddenly turns into Rambo on steroids. His path to heroism is filled with existential questions like, Who am I? Where am I? And why is that tiger chasing me? Right from the start, the game puts you face-to-face with Vaas, a villain who steals every scene with his charisma. As he himself says, The definition of insanity is trying to play Far Cry 3 without dying every 10 minutes.
The gameplay is a mix of exploration, shooting, hunting, and accidentally setting everything on fire while trying to sneak past enemies. One of the highlights is climbing radio towers to unlock parts of the map. This is the game where Ubisoft’s “tower obsession” was born — a tradition of making you scale something tall to unlock the map, which they then proceeded to cram into every game they’ve made since. At this point, climbing towers in an Ubisoft game feels like an unspoken initiation ritual.
Now with achievements added to the game, it’s a great excuse to replay it and relive those moments: rescuing your friends, meeting Vaas, and seeing how many times you can accidentally blow yourself up with your own Molotov cocktails.
Verdict: Far Cry 3 is a game you’ll want to revisit. Even if it’s just to hear Vaas explain the definition of insanity while you repeatedly fail at stealth.

Unfortunately, I feel like it didn't age quite well, in the way that if you were playing this for the first time in current year, then you have already played this before, maybe even better. I guess it's the consequence of pioneering the modern open world formula, or Ubisoft formula.
On the other hand: Really good graphics and art direction that still hold up to this day, beautiful map (despite not being my favorite in the series) and amazing story and characters that made the game so iconic along with its revolutionary gameplay.
If you engage with this game as a product of its time, it will absolutely be an unforgettable experience.

If Farcry 3 was to be released today, it would be criticized and without a doubt not be successful but back in the day, it set the tone and standard of what games can achieve and what games can be. This was the high-end, priceless experience that everyone wanted to be a part of.
This game has the best villain of all time. Vaas is and will always be unbeatable in his persona. Such an iconic counterpart of the antagonist Jason. Very memorable.

Game offers the classic Farcry gameplay you kinda expect if you're familiar with the franchise and it's a really fun open-world game, with alot of action. The weapons are diverse and environment is alive with wildlife and alot of activites such as hunting, side missions, mini-games and collectibles to find.
AI within the game is really lacking and with todays standard not a challenge or any fun.
Overall it's a decent game but because it's so wellknown for it's iconic villain, you kinda wanna experience the insanity of Vaas yourself. Such a great preformance from Michael Mando.

I played this game back on PS3, but I can't believe how much realism they've added! You could almost believe you're working in IT helpdesk and not just playing a simulator! Because I'm at 1.7 hours and it's taken this long to get it to run on windows 11 without black screens, stuttering or crashes. I've rewatched the first unskippable cut scene enough times for it to be burned into my brain. Plus, forced login to Ubisoft EVERY time with a password??! Wtf?!
The game is good, but hope you have an older PC and don't mind Ubisoft taking your data.
What a game. A janky mess, a beautiful bit of storytelling, a series of devastating crashes, and hunting sharks with a jet ski and no weapon.
Pros. The aesthetic and writing are top-notch. I like climbing the towers and doing the rare hunting missions, which is rare. I like the crafting. I fucking love the way vehicles control in this game. The signature weapons are sick as Hell. Vaas is a great villain, and Hoyt grew on me this time around. Between Dennis, Citra, and Dr. Earnheardt, the characters in this game are very good! I also love all the surreal/drug trip missions. It's just a very fun game at the end of the day. Feels good to use the knife, bow, shotguns, sniper rifles, and launchers. Feels good to use the wingsuit (and abuse the fuck out of it). I also enjoyed the weird Assassin's Creed connection they threw in for no reason. You never quite become overpowered, but when you nail a mission, you really feel like it.
Cons. Game crashes pretty often. Not cripplingly so, but often right before a mission actually saves your completion. It runs pretty badly overall, but mostly the rendering is affected. Didn't really have frame issues. The resolution is constantly getting fucked with when you launch, re-launch, or tab out of the game. Hurk is a terrible character and I didn't like his side story at all. The escort mission towards the end is a slog.
Got a refund doesn't run a modern hardware with out modifications.
The game is an absolute masterpiece from Ubisoft. One of the first open world games that I have played back in 2014 and after 10 years, I am still playing it. Love this game.

A truly impressive and highly influential game for its time, Far Cry 3 was best played about a decade ago. You really had to be there to understand why people love this game so much. Michael Mando's performance as Vaas is unmatched to this day, but it will not be enough to carry this game for modern audiences. If you've played other Ubisoft titles, you're already familiar with the formula that began with Far Cry 3: explore an open world littered with collectibles and side missions, taking the story at your own pace. Unfortunately, I can't even recommend playing FC3 for the story because it runs like absolute dookie. The game crashes CONSTANTLY, and there is no chance Ubisoft will fix it. Multiplayer servers are down too. No custom maps. No rubbing your crotch in the face of the Rakyat after slamming them in TDM. The game is a husk of what it used to be. F Ubisoft, they deserve what is coming to them.
While going to the cove with Liza to see Daisy after the pirates cove mission I'm stuck on a infinite loading screen.
Edit: turning down all graphics settings from very high/ultra to (high) fixes this issue!
No more Multiplayer
Very fun game by yourself, with a big BUT.
I just downloaded it again to play with somebody else, expecting a fun coop experience, only to find out Ubisoft just closed the multiplayer servers, effectively removing all online functions.
Despite this it is still marked with the "Multiplayer" tag here on steam.
It also automatically installs Ubisofts "Connect" bloatware

Did I ever tell you what the definition of insanity is?
This game came out in 2012. Since that day, Ubisoft has given it zero support. Over the years, they have removed features like multiplayer but keep forcing us to their stupid launcher (Ubisoft Connect), which adds nothing to the experience.
Overall, since 2012, hardware evolved, but they kept selling the game without any care for optimization, making their profits with a game that runs poorly on modern hardware...
The game is excellent, funny, and fresh, even after all those years, but playing is frustrating with the constant frame drops and horrible optimization. Selling this game for 15 bucks in the last 5 years alone would be more than enough for Ubisoft to hire someone to fix this mess, but since Ubisoft is dying, it probably won't happen. Forget about modding, forget about tweaking the settings, the game will run below 50 fps on some high resolution, forcing us to lower it to be enjoyable.
Should you buy it? Only with a great discount and already prepared for the horrible optimization on modern hardware.
Thank you, Ubisoft for nothing, by far one of the worst companies ever.

Played through Far Cry 3 for the first time. Is the game really from 2012? The game looks really cool for its age! Or was there a graphics update? I was really amazed.
This game is great but it crashes constantly. Ubisoft login account garbage is terrible.
This game permantly changed AAA, no all of gaming for the better and for the worse... that and it's arguably UBI's magnum opus how sad. I don't need to really say much about this game TBH, there are hundreds of retrospectives and impacts that FC3 had on gaming and popular culture as a whole. As a game though, I'd say its a solid 7/10, and it does clearly feel dated on many occasions, especially due to it being a 360 era game it seems the devs didn't try to push technological boundaries too much, yet they still crafted something that holds up well.
I love Far Cry 3, I really really do. Finished it 7 or 8 times throughout the years and wanted to start 2025 off right by playing through one of my most beloved games once again. However, this game is in an unplayable state on Windows 11. I was able to play fine for 5 hours yesterday when I suddenly got a crash. Problem is, the game just doesn't play well since. Sometimes I can play for 2 minutes before it freezes and another time I can play for 15 minutes, but never more than half an hour. Already tried many fixes, including mods and downgrading to an older version. It doesn't even make me mad, just sad really.
Otherwise it's truly an amazing game, one of my all-time favourites, and I highly recommend everyone to play it, just not on PC I guess...

I recognize that I'm in the minority here and it probably has something to do with remembering the hype and everything, but I found this game underwhelming to say the least, the story isn't much to write home about, and that's what kills it for me, I found the "Kill the bad guys during a drug trip" thing supremely disappointing in particular, in the case of Hoyt it felt like a cop out so the devs didn't have to explain killing the guards, the combat and open world are fine, the luster is definitely spoiled by the twelve years of much better games. Maybe Far Cry just isn't for me, or maybe I would have enjoyed the game more in 2012, but it didn't live up to the hype for me, definitely worth the $5 tho, and for that I'll give it a thumbs up.
You now need to log in to a third party service to actually play this game. If you don't log in to ubisoft connect, even while offline, the game closes automatically. I currently have no access to the product because ubisoft connect is broken.
I really wanted to play this game but ubisoft as usual makes it impossible, first launch you must install ubisoft connect... fine, but when i selected don't install it FU***** installed anyway.
i played it a long time ago and was enjoying it but its the same formula obviously the original formula. There is issues where higher frame rates lead to choppyness. The game looks like its dropping frames but its not. I'm sure there is a mod out there that can fix this but who the f*** cares at this stage
Remember if you played any farcry after 3 they are all basically the same, that's why the one you played first was your favourite...
Fun to play even with all the similar missions, but definitely like the story line.

I got the game about 3 years ago, but it didn't really click with me so i refunded it. Since then I've thought about rebuying it during like every steam sale because of the love it gets from everyone. I decided to do it now and I'm so happy I did. I haven't played a lot of video games in recent years, but this one finally clicked with me!
Everything is fantastic, from the story to the immersive open world, all the characters, side missions, crafting system, they nailed it all! Even the graphics are great, 12 years later! On the other side, movement, looting and gunplay can be a liiitle clunky at times, but it's not really fair to complain about that so many years after, I feel.

My pigeons, my little friend... this game got everything! Palm trees, girls, blue express rides, white steamships in blue waters. A barely worn tuxedo, a Japanese henchman, platinum teeth, socks without holes, and your own pool table. But most importantly, radio towers, patrols and outposts!

Recognizing Michael Mando's excellent acting the game itself can't keep up nowadays in terms of graphics and also the glitches and bugs here and there.
