I've played less than an hour, early thoughts:
I wish I could give a neutral review.
From what I have seen so far, it is not a metroidvania (Exploration has been pretty much linear, and opening new areas just consists of flipping switches to open doors). This might change later of course, but I would describe what I've experienced thus far as more a precision platformer with some adventure elements.
The music/sound effects are.. at times i like them, at times I chuckle, other times I find it annoying. Not sure the grunts while wall jumping were a good idea. Ultimately the art and production is probably what's keeping me from playing further, I wasn't immersed in this world like I was with super meat boy.
First of all, I want to thank devs for updating the game in an hour after I presented a minor problem
Bad pad is one the metroidvanias ever made, but as game (MV+Precision platformer), it's one of the best I have played. Mastering the controls early is rewarding, and makes last map segment easier as there it's mandatory.
I decided to finally buy this and give it a chance after seeing the creator advertise this on r/metroidvania and realizing a few days prior that "the metroidvania review" curator is a joke. This is basically super meat boy reimagined as a metroidvania. It's clearly someone's first game and it shows but it has undergone several patches and the developer is very active and will immediately fix any issues that get reported. Nonetheless, if you're going to buy this, you should wait for a sale. Also, keep in mind that this game has some of the worst world design ever in a metroidvania.
edit: after playing more I've decided that this can't be recommended. The reason is that no amount of patches are going to be able to save this first attempt at a video game. The devs need to move on to their next project and stop clinging to the past.
UPDATE -- I now have an Xbox X/S controller. Noticed there was some updates to the game. Updated it and the options now allow me to map the controls. LOVE IT. Now I can play the game and I am very happy!! I don't know if it works with PS DualSense controller still, but I have had so many problems with that controller I decided to just use the Xbox X/S. Everything looks great and I have updated my rating. Noticed the update from the devs on my previous comment... glad they are still putting work into this game. My previous comment is null at this point... can't expect every controller to work perfectly with every game... my apologies! Thanks for such a great game!!
PROS -- dope game with a lot of heart and soul, graphics are perfect, so much exploration, straight forward and easy to play out of the box
CONS -- sometimes the music can be a little repetitive (especially if you are not a metal fan, though I am). Also it will take some getting used to the character movement with the controls in regards to gliding, sliding, and running. But that is part of the point of the game. Also the background sometimes blends in with the foreground, but if you die you can just get it right the next time. PLAY!
This is a great game and I am extremely excited that I can now play it. Been looking forward to this for so long. Thanks yall!

Using PS5 DualShock through Steam with the generic drivers and no external controller mapping... controller doesn't work. Attempted to map the buttons in the options menu of the game and the controller is not recognized. I know it isn't my controller or system, so it must be an issue with the game itself. So... yeah, can't play the game. Kinda sucks as I bought this and Bad Run together as a package for Xmas and was excited to play both. Controller works with Bad Run, but not Bad Pad. I know this game is a few years old, but either it works directly out of the box with current tech or it doesn't. I doubt this issue will be addressed by the devs since its now 2021/2022, but this could cause a new generation of players to refrain from buying/playing the game.
Super Meat Boy meets Metroidvania
Bad Pad is an interesting take on the Metroidvania genre, focused on putting the player through gauntlets of platforming challenges with a clear Super Meat Boy influence, combined with elements of Metroidvania like an open-interconnected world, unlocking new abilities, and permanent upgrades.
If you are not familiar with Super Meat Boy it is a pretty tough game so if you are not good at 2D platformers or do not welcome significant challenge in your games, Bad Pad is one you should probably avoid. However, for platforming veterans and those who embrace a challenge, you may find this one fun and rewarding as I did. Also note, the game does include difficulty settings of Easy/Normal/Hard. I only played on Normal, which to be fair, is probably not quite as tough as Super Meat Boy, but definitely puts your platforming skills to the test. With the availability of an Easy mode, this would be a good option for those who don't want as steep a challenge.
Overall, positives in my opinion:
+ Tight controls (and similar feel to Super Meat Boy) that give the player the expected results when you press a button. This is important for a demanding platformer, so that you always have the tools to overcome the obstacles. It's just a matter of getting it right and precision play. Another comparison in the MV genre would be that if feels similarly smooth to Ori but not quite as floaty and with fewer movement mechanics.
+ Well-tuned difficulty progression. The challenge gradually escalates in a way that feels tough but ultimately fair IMO. Though it is certainly demanding, the more I played, the better I did, and each challenge was surmountable with a reasonable rate of escalation. (Note: I would describe myself as a veteran at platformers though--the game expects this of the player, so if you are not in this category, you will likely find this game more frustrating than it's worth, at least on Normal mode).
+ Big game world. You cover a lot of ground, moving quickly through the game's big areas, but there are a lot of them. It took me about 12 hours to complete it, but that's 12 hours of intense white-knuckle platforming, so it's a dense experience. This game time was also with essentially no backtracking, unlike a lot of other MVs (for better or worse).
+ Variety, mini-games, and unique boss battles. Maybe some won't like this, but I thought it was generally pretty cool. There are a bunch of mini-games that mix up the gameplay, including throw-back arcade games and boss-battles that change core mechanics. Some bosses can be a bit tough but others are more on the easy side. The toughest parts of the game however, focus more on the core platforming.
Some negatives:
- Voice acting and music are rather questionable. The devs were going for humor with exaggerated slap-stick voice acting, and some may appreciate it, but I found it more on the grating and annoying side. The dev is also clearly a fan of head-banger music which is incorporated throughout, also with a comedic aim, but I wasn't really a fan. Thankfully the music tracks only play during cutscenes or (oddly) when looking at the map.
- Limited reason to explore and back-track. There are some optional/missable upgrades to find and collectible coins, which you can go back to find them all and unlock a bonus upgrade (I did not do this personally), but in general there is not a good reason to revisit old areas. Some MV's handle this well, others can miss the mark, but usually it's a more pronounced element than in Bad Pad. With a lack of a comprehensive fast travel system and a game world packed with challenging platforming, the rewards of going back just aren't a strong enough incentive to want to go back and explore more.
Final thoughts: As a veteran player of platformers, I really enjoyed Bad Pad. It offers a big world full of tough-but-fair platforming challenge that for me at least, was occasionally frustrating but ultimately rewarding. The Metroidvania elements are somewhat light, but enough is there to put an interesting spin on Super Meat Boy-style platforming.
UPDATE: It appears there is a new update that has added a true fast travel system which becomes available after beating the game. I will also note that the developer is very responsive to feedback!
One of the key recommendation for this game is:
If you're stuck, or encounter a bug, or found anything unreasonable, you can expect to get reply from the developer very fast (less than 24 hrs in my case).
Now, talk about the game:
The good part is that the game is actually a bit different than what you will expect. There are certainly some differences compare to other platforming/metroid game (unfortunately I can't go into much details without spoiling it).
However, before you buy it, be warned that the game is actually far more challenging that what it looks like. There are more than just metroid/platforming level. At later end of the game the level is not only very long without much saves in between but also get very very challenging.
Overall, the game is pretty much ok but taking into account of how helpful the developer is, I would say it probably still worth to give it a go.
A very nice hard-yet-fair platformer with tight and responsive controls. Overall a very polished game with an amusing story, great art and sound track.
Some levels were pretty brutal but were made more forgiving with the many save locations. I played through on the easiest difficulty level and found it to be a quite a challenge. It's not rage quit inducing although some levels I found myself attempting many times before finishing them and the satisfaction of completion was gratifying.
Total playthrough to beat the final boss was around 20 hours. Someone with more experience with hard platformers (and better coordination) could do it in a lot less time.
The levels were numerous and vast and there wasn't a whole lot of back tracking. Warp gates, which are numerous, helped when back tracking was required.
A highly enjoyable game.
This is a tight platformer metroidvania with a touch of awesome puzzle.
Hey, I really enjoyed the game!
It reminds me of the good stuff that I used to play.
That was an entertaining way to get through and I'm glad for that.
Edit: i'm gonna change my review now, i feel like after some time has passed and since the developer changed/fixed a lot of my gripes with the game, i can say that it is a decent game now. i'm gonna leave the rest of my review untouched, so everyone can keep reading my initial response to this. the most frustrating parts for me, no longer exist in the way they did, so it is hard to put it into a clear rating now. probably jumped from 3/10 to 6/10 or something. i think many people will still find it too... "simple"? of a game, but there is enough fun to be had, if you don't mind.
okay, i played through this completely, i had a lot of fun here and there, but overall i simply can not recommend this to anyone, unless i want them to rage. not even because the game is hard, but because it feels shi-tty.
for example: the submarine parts are just something i don't want to play in an metroidvania/platformer and the controls felt incredibly bad, and this game already controls a little weird from the get go.
another one would be that the mechanics aren't very well instructed.
you are supposed to just know that you need a magnet for a new kind of platform, that at first just looks like vines. so i tried several times to grab them in any way i could think of and almost quit, but after explaining all my problems about it to a friend, i noticed a spark on the map, that wasn't just supposed to show you a scary place, but it was the needed magnet powerup. the same shi-t happens later with some kind of zelda like maze, that i still don't know, if you had to have gotten the correct path somewhere before, but i did enough trial and error, until i finally arrived somewhere. i think you needed to go the correct direction, like 11 or 12 times. there was no clue to help you figure out how you were supposed to know where to go. so i tried again and again, writing down my solution every single step further. it was a pain and i almost quit, because after 10 symbols, i still wasn't through and thought it was pointless.
last is the bosses.. knowing what to do, they aren't that bad, but figuring it out, especially once you have the groundpound attack, was very weird. my first try to hit the bosses in which i was supposed to use it, they never took damage. i wanted to throw that move out the window multiple times aswell, as it often got used, just while climbing up, even though i made sure to not touch down whatsoever... there are more buttons, just give this ability its own button. this was a very frustrating ability, once you had it. also having to use it multiple times on stonebricks, just made it bug out, if you wanted to go fast and sometimes did nothing. so i almost didn't realize i needed to use it, because at first, nothing happened.
and the last boss.. oh boy. you get hit all the time, even though the attacks aren't even frking close to you. and why do i have to fight a shi-tty starfox clone boss in a platformer game anyway?
i had lots of fun too, but most of it, because i was laughing at how bad things were. there definitely exist worse games and in my own library, this game isn't even in the worst tier i pu my games in, but i can only click "yes" or "no" here. and for the majority of people, i believe a "no" is more representable. i'd say it is a 3/10.
i rather drown a skunk in a raspberry fluid charmocha in a coffee tank of PRISMA
I got the game today, and I liked it.
It's a sweet platform game with puzzle elements.... (I am a big platform/run&gun fan)
I played it with gamepad, and it was quite responsive. Love the fact that you can also jump on walls and you can climb on plants hanging from the ceiling... this makes sure that you have to learn several game meccanics. More skills=more fun :)
Awesome cool little game, just cleared the first chapter and still have plenty to do.
Also loved the soundtrack!
Fun game. Tough.
Amazing hard rock soundtrack!
This game reminds me of super meat boy but more forgiving.
The bosses are hard but not too hard although sometimes you will get screwd by RNG.
All in all a pretty good playthrough.
metroidvania at it's best!!!
Metal + metroidvania = Bad Pad!!!
Although the influence of Super Meat Boy is hard to miss, the open-ended nature of the levels makes Bad Pad feel like a fresh platformer in an overpopulated genre. But the key differantiator is the sound, and you have to turn on the speakers to understand how metal this game actually is.
Funny as hell, and difficult enough to match.
English:
A hidden jewel for all platformer-aficionados. The graphic-style is somewhat retro, more like filtered SNES than muddy NES style. Some situations are really tricky, but they are never so hard so that you want to give up.
The price of 12,49 EUR atm is more than fair.
Edit: I ran into a few problems, and within a few minutes teh developer answered on the steam discussion boards. And he even released a patch after an hour or two which fixed the bug I've found.
Another big thumbs up!
German:
Preis derzeit: 12,49 EUR...geht in Ordnung.
this game is great really
always a new challenge
the sound is amazing i can play this game only to hear the soundtrack
the sotry is funny (guys really funny(: )
the mechanic are very good(controler support)
so if your looking into this one dont think twice
This is a great platformer with tons of content even though it's still in EA, which means there is much more to come. Very responsive controls and comfortable physics are the backbone of any good platformer and BadPad has a solid foundation from which a great game has been built. You can tell this game has been made with love and it oozes charm. I highly recommend anyone who enjoys platformers to give this game a try,
