It's way better than I originally thought!
Exodemon is a little nice boomer shooter which has been cut short from its development, and that is what kept me from buying from all this time... and where it is true that is relatively short compared to most, it's gameplay is something refreshing (switching between melee and ranged, which is not new but here has been well made) and that truly mixes up cleverly with the game's design (even the simple feature of the HUD has been thought cleverly).
It's a shame that the game dev (from what I understood) is no longer in business of making videogame, because this one is a real gem!
I really like the application of a diagetic interface, keeping the stats on the back of your hands is a nice touch, as is changing the physical appearance of your right hand to match the weapon in an easily memorable fashion. I was hoping for a flamethrower or biledriver of some kind, but hey, I'll take what I can get. Namely, the grenade launcher. The claw attack is very solid, too. Like all boomer tooters, every level has a completion score - that's something I never really cared about but if you're a completionist then that'll be right up your alley.
It's a fun retro style game that sort of reminds me of Quake, long story short you play a scientist infested/bonded with some sort of symbiotic organism. Explore levels, find secrets or upgrades for your weaponry. If you want to chill and unwind with a decent single player experience I'd say this game is worth looking into. I love the art style aswell as it's basic controls and game play there really isn't much to complain with about this game.
I cant believe i've never left a review here. THIS GAME IS FANTASTIC! I grabbed this game back in 2019 on gamejolt, and then bought it again here on steam. Fantastic indie game that neeeds soooo much more love. Buy it now!
It's really cute. Not as polished as Ultrakill but surprisingly good. The simplicity of the first few levels might fool you into thinking that's all there is, but the game expands and evolves, and ramps up the challenge.
Something's off with the mouse control, it doesn't feel precise. Even if you disable mouse acceleration it still feels weird. The music is too constantly bombastic, it never gives a silent break, even when nothing is happening. The same song looping over and over for hours. There's no downtime. Could use some atmosphere. The environments are a little unimaginative. You'll see the same computer consoles pasted all over the place. And the place is dull grey. Enemies don't react to being shot from afar, they just kinda stand there like idiots, not taking cover. It takes a whole hour until you get a weapon beyond the starter pistol.
Great game! Gives off a good 90s vibe. You play as a scientist who got infected by an alien. So you have to shoot and claw your way through the levels. The right hand shoots while the left hand melee. Right hand shows your ammo and your left hand shows your health. You can obtain different powers and upgrades. My only downside is the game lacks boss fights or some interesting soundtrack. The level design is more plain and it only has few soundtrack out of 18 levels. Still good nonetheless and rather prefer to play a game that works than something buggy.
Exodemon is a good fun!
It's a fairly short (if you don't go for 100%) retro-like first person shooter where you play as a scientist overtaken by a parasitic/symiotic (?) alien lifeform, and you must escape the facility where the lifeform was experimented upon.
The game features nice visuals, fun and simple gameplay and one banger of a soundtrack!
There's plenty of secrets to uncover, and each yields something useful: a weapon upgrade or a health up.
Speaking of weapons, the arsenal consists of 6 unique weapons, and figuring out which one is best for killing this one particular enemy is not too stressful. (Though admittedly I ended up using almost exclusively a fully upgraded red hand for the sheer amount of single-target burst damage)
If you want to have a good time, most certainly get Exodemon!
Also, shoutout to Casey Explosion for recommending it.
Ultimately, I recommend this game, but with a lot of caveats.
The weapon system is such that weapons are extremely rare, but hidden within levels. If you miss a weapon, a weapon upgrade, or a health upgrade, there is no way to restart the stage, and no way to know you haven't collected a weapon within a stage until you have gone past the point of no return and completing. For example, if you miss the shotgun in level 3, as I did, you won't find another until halfway through the game, and it's a very key part of dealing with enemies. The devs promised a patch including a level select 'in a few months' over a year ago, so it looks like this game has been abandoned.
The weapons themselves are also a mixed bag. Some of them, like the charge shot, seemed pretty useless to me, and I only used them to conserve ammo on the guns I actually liked. The first two additional weapons I found were the best (shotgun and rifle), and I used them primarily throughout the game.
The music, while a strong part of the game's appeal, gets repetitive. There's pretty much only the one track, which you can hear in the trailer. While it does dynamically change as you enter and leave combat, I was quite disappointed that there weren't new tracks in later stages.
In terms of glitches, they were present but minor. I got clipped into geometry by lifts a few times, and had to grenade recoil myself out, or failing that restart. The biggest problem is the very end of the game. It seemed like it was supposed to be a giant enemy gauntlet, as it was a large open space with ammo and item pickups everywhere, but I just walked to the final objective and no enemies spawned. As such, I didn't pick up the items, because I thought the objective might turn out to be a fake and that would trigger the giant final arena... but no, the game just ended, and that maybe screwed me out of the get-everything achievement.
That's a lot of negatives, but the positives are that the core gameplay and aesthetics and music come together to make a great Vaporwave take on retro shooters lying somewhere between Quake and Doom, with fully 3D geometry with a lot of winding verticality and good secret design within its limitations (no hidden panels/breakable walls) but sprite-based enemies. If you watch the trailer, you know what you're getting into, and I'd recommend it at its current price. Just be aware that if you're expecting the trailer to be a hint of what you're getting, the game doesn't get much deeper. You're seeing the whole thing, not just a tease. The game has a great vibe that I enjoyed a lot, but was ultimately shallower than I expected, and shallower than a lot of its better contemporaries.
tl;dr: This is nice, but don't play it over Dusk or something, they're not on the same level.
Fun FPS with delightful retro aesthetic, could use some performance tweaks in some levels though.
Very fun and fast paced game. I bought it because it gave me some old school aliens versus predator vibes and I was not dissapointed. The story feels a bit detached, but that's not a problem necessarily. A fun romp. 10/10 would recommend.
Short and sweet retro-eque shooter with some neat "weapons". There are a couple of issues (the ending felt abrupt compared to the immersive opening) and the music gets overly repetitive after 5 levels, but I'd say it's a decent game.
I'd love to see the game get expanded on, a sequel or something else to improve on what's already here.
It pains me to do this, but I must recommend against this game. There's pro's and con's and I *would* overall recommend it, however I encountered an unacceptable bug at the end of the game.
I ran into an inexplicable stuck spot. Like, not even stuck in a crammed spot or anything. I put my foot on an elevator and was rendered completely immobile. Your only option in this game is to restart the entire level, as the game does not use manual saves and also does not have mid-level checkpoints. I stubbornly did not want to do that. If I could just move a pixel, I'd be out. I discovered there was a console, so I figured I could use a noclip mode to get out. I tried a few things that came to mind like "noclip" and "fly" and whatever, but nothing worked. Then I entered something like "teleport" or "tele" and for some reason this completed the level. Because the game is entirely autosaves and does not have a level select, my game was officially destroyed. After some digging I discovered it's possible to modify your save file pretty easily. I managed to reset myself back to the beginning of that level (I also unflagged my game as a cheater because **** you, I only cheated to get out of a bug so I deserve the achievement for beating the game). What makes this all so damning was that all of the game's intentional design choices made the situation worse. AND I looked at the discussion boards and saw this very bug reported months ago, never fixed.
There's also another stupid bug. Each level ends with a scoreboard, and it always reports 0% accuracy. This has also been reported months ago. For some reason the dev's response was like, "Don't miss so much." Buddy. We'd have to empty hundreds and hundreds of rounds into the walls for such a stat to average down to 0. How did this guy ever manage to get a working game finished with a mindset like this?
Anyway, in terms of actual game design, I've only got a few gripes. The first is that the same music plays for the entirety of the game. It's decent electronica or whatever-the-hell kids call this stuff. But I don't really want to listen to the same 2 minute track for hours on end.
The other is that the enemy visual design and world lore isn't very interesting. The enemies are all just bug things like from Space Invaders or something. They're distinguishable and have good attack patterns and such, I just find brainless blue bugs not terribly intriguing. They do blow apart and spray blood, which is pretty cool. I just wish they were something else. Maybe more humanoid or something scary. And the plot is just like, you're a scientist and something went wrong. Not much detail. Doesn't give me much motivation or buy-in to do all this murder.
The last thing is the sound design. Someone might argue the sounds being what they are is "old school", but they use a variety of proper synth sounds AND "samples" (I put this in quotes because I'm sure ALL of the sounds in this game are samples, not actually synthesized by the software in the moment). So there's no real technological cutoff point in terms of figuring out what place in retro history they were going for. Most weapons make DOOT DOOT sounds like an Atari, but there's also more "foley artist" type stuff in there, possibly downsampled to sound like an older generation of sound. Regardless, the point is the player guns all sound too samey and too weak. I wish some of them could have had more PUNCH to them.
Otherwise I had fun. Running around and shooting stuff was satisfying and engaging. I pretty much played this what felt like nonstop (I'm sure I did stop several times. I don't have time to sit and play a game for 5 hours straight that often any more). I think the game rushed to finish production since the ending doesn't make much sense. You just run over to an escape ship unopposed. There's even ammo spawns all over near it, but nothing to shoot. And the game doesn't have an ending. Maybe that's what happened to this game. Oh well. It's fun while it lasts.
Yes.
Graphics: 8-bit Quake.
Music: More please, Mr. Hexenkraft.
Gameplay: 8-bit Quake.
Story: The Guyver meets Venom on a xeno purge to find a way home.
Spookers: Suppose 8-bit aliens could be scary.
Verdict: 8-bit Quake. Is good thing. Purge the xenos.
I have followed the game since the first demo since it was renamed Exodemon. I kind of have a strong relationship with this game; I fell in love with it's game play then, and am equally in love now. The game has changed a lot, enemies have changed in appearence, the icon with their image hasn't All I can really say is that this game is awesome, and I want more of it. I can't wait to finish the game and then play everything released by Kuupu afterwords.
Absolutely brilliant game. Extremely slick movement. The campaign has a good length to it, various upgrades you find are pretty fun, the different weapons aren't *too* exciting but honestly from the movement and style alone it feels pretty great with just the stuff you start with. Nice maps, sweet cyberpunk tunes throughout. Highly recommend, especially at the price it's at.
4/5
Undoubtedly a game made with a lot of attention to details. From the menu to the gameplay. The graphics are well made, and you can see how carefully they worked throughout the game.
The dynamics of the game are well balanced, with elaborate levels demanding more and more from the player, but without becoming tiresome. The difficulty of the opponents was also fair, bringing a new challenge to each scenario. With various weapon options, it's up to the player to find the best way to use them in every situation.
The soundtrack is excellent and is able to drive the pace of the game properly. A perfect sensory connection with everything else. I could see a small room for improvements, such as the abrupt change of music from one environment to another, but they were too small for an indie game with so many qualities.
I had a lot of fun playing this game, and the feeling of nostalgia was always present. It reminded me of classics like Quake and AnotherWolrd. Honestly, I would have paid even more for this game. It's worth it for sure.
I can say that Exodemon is a time machine full of identity. Excellent job. Congratulations!!
Exodemon has such a nice learning curve, it feels even better and better the more you play and the more you understand about it. Its level design is also amazing.
Other games have tried to get the retro/classic fps feeling but none of them made it right like Exodemon did for me.
I won't lie, when I first saw this game i wasn't exactly left feeling impressed or compelled to play it. Kind of just picked it up now on a whim in the hopes it might be interesting. I'm writing this review before I head to bed mostly because i feel compelled to. I'm about 42 minutes into this and I've been having a hard time convincing myself to put it down. This game is a blast and I would easily recommend it already. Effectively its a pseudo old school shooter, you run through various levels flipping switches, killing enemies, and juggling your very limited resources, ( ammo is at a premium here ). This game does use a checkpoint system, which whilst I will admit is a slight turn off the way its implimented into the game feels nice and I haven't found it to bothersome thus far. As you progress you unlock new gloves as opposed to guns ( but are basically functionally the same ) Fps staples such as a pistol like, a shotgun like, a... Idk I think its supposed to be a rocket launcher style weapon? Regardless they all feel awesome to use and just in general the sound design in this game is so crunchy and pleasing to listen to. Levels thus far have been fairly well designed and even somewhat challenging.
Honestly my only complaint is that its gotten a bit choppy in the framerate department here or there and I'm packing a gtx 1070 so that might be a bigger issue for some folks. But honestly just grab this thing its great and the dev probably needs the money anyways.
First Impressions: A solid retro-FPS game with tight movement mechanics, nice looking level design, good enemy variety and a fun and unique take on the weapons. Also features an awesome synthwave soundtrack by Hexencraft. Looks like it might be a bit on the short side, but it's still good value for the pricetag.
Only issues so far have been the odd framerate dip (on a system that's well within the requirements) and the enemy A.I. will occasionally get stuck on geometry or derp out a bit if they lose line of sight on the player.
Exodemon is a great indie fast paced fps with gorgeous retro aesthetics (almost the same style as seen in the upcoming game Prodeus).
When playing it for the first few minutes it put that smile on my face, you know that guilty smile you get when playing something really good with that old school vibe to it lol.
This game is pure retro fps nostalgia.😊
So far great level design, sexy retro looking graphics, sweet synthwave soundtrack and top notch gameplay, what more can you ask for ?
It looks like there is a lot of platforming, which i like, the gameplay feels great and the controls are responsive.
I think the game might become a bit repetitive in the long run or might be short but imo it's absolutely worth buying and the price is fair for such quality.
Only thing i dislike so far is the unstable framerate (very common in games powered by unity engine).
Nothing too bad but still can be improved i think.
Rating 7/10
