Classic! You basically walk on ice while shooting things and do parkour and also solve some puzzles. Hard as fukk, but quicksaves save the day. There were few cutscene not gong glitches(on steamdeck), but quickloading fixed the things.
Half-Life is a game that redefined the first-person shooter genre, setting a new benchmark for immersive storytelling, world-building, and gameplay mechanics.
Even decades after its release, this 1998 masterpiece remains a monumental achievement in gaming history!
At its core, Half-Life’s brilliance lies in its seamless integration of narrative and gameplay.
The story unfolds in real-time through Gordon Freeman’s eyes, with no cutscenes to interrupt the flow.
From the moment you step into the Black Mesa Research Facility, the game immerses you in a world that feels alive and reactive.
The silent protagonist approach not only heightens immersion but also makes the player an active participant in the unfolding chaos.
The gameplay is a perfect blend of action, exploration, and puzzle-solving.
Every encounter feels meticulously crafted, whether it’s battling alien creatures like the headcrabs and Vortigaunts or outsmarting the relentless soldiers of the Hazardous Environment Combat Unit (HECU).
The level design is masterful, guiding players through a series of interconnected environments that feel both expansive and purposeful.
The iconic crowbar, as simple as it is, became a symbol of the game’s ingenuity and player empowerment.
Graphically, Half-Life was a marvel for its time.
The use of the GoldSrc engine allowed for detailed textures, impressive lighting effects, and realistic character animations.
These technical achievements, combined with a haunting and atmospheric soundtrack, created a sense of tension and urgency that kept players on the edge of their seats.
What truly sets Half-Life apart is its attention to detail.
The environmental storytelling is second to none, with every room, object, and sound contributing to the narrative.
The sense of dread and mystery surrounding the resonance cascade and the enigmatic G-Man only deepens as you progress, leaving you hungry for answers long after the credits roll.
Half-Life is not just a game; it’s an experience.
It challenged conventions, pushed technological boundaries, and proved that video games could deliver stories as compelling as any other medium.
Whether you’re a veteran revisiting the Black Mesa facility or a newcomer curious to see where it all began, Half-Life is a must-play title that has truly earned its legendary status!
This is a ride of a game, a must play for everyone, challenging, unpredictable and fun. It's 100% recommendable for the time being, great introduction to the half life universe and props to valve for such experience. Just one thing, GORDON FREEMAN IS HIM.
Damn this games so good. Even though its almost 30 years old it still holds up really well. The good puzzle design, good mechanics that when mastered feel amazing, great fighting, the pacing of new mechanics, and the very unexpected but very welcomed ending all make it no wonder it got so big. 10/10
Great classic. Game works perfectly on deck and PC, cloud saves make it a joy to go back and forth between the two.
Still a classic to this day, enjoy being able to quicksave and not go through a long game over screen or having to do something from scratch.
this game is a 10/10 its fun and,it has a lot of cheat codes.
After hearing praise about Half-Life for decades I decided to finally play it, and overall it's "good". That's all.
I am taking into account the fact it was released in 1998, and the tech is impressive for it's time, which is why I am recommending it and saying that it's good, but I don't quite understand the praise for the game.
The story was fine. I mean you kind of understand the entire plot immediately, so it's not like there are any crazy twists or unexpected turns, and the gameplay is quite repetitive.
I am going to play the rest of the franchise now with HL: Opposing Force next. Maybe as I progress through the story and complete the entire franchise I will change my overall opinion, but for now it was just a game. Nothing crazy or memorable.
I really hope when I am finished I understand the craze for HL3.
Played half-life for the first time in 2025 after I never played it back in the 90s. I was greatly surprised. Graphics are very outdated and some game mechanics as well, but I still loved the mix of FPS and puzzle game. Very interesting setting and gameplay.
a classic for sure when i was a kid i used to paly it all the time on my ps2 and i loved this game im glad i can play it on my lapotop to and after soo much year still be into the half life ganre
Got stuck at a level which is built like a maze, but untill that maze, I was having fun. I recommend but know that you will be stuck and be forced to quit the gameplay after 38 hours.
Very good action/puzzle/story game where you are given the short end of the stick, but you are quite literally the main character. Thank you Valve.
i have no idea how half life became its own niche thing, but for those who can think outside that box, its a pretty fun. just watch out for those who take it too seriously.
It is one of my favorite games of all time and the 25th Anniversary update really improved the aged engine. It is a great pick if you want a classic game with classic graphics and feel. Despite its age there are still player-run servers with people in them and modders remain active. There are plenty of mods for Half-Life that are often large enough to be separate games.
About two decades ago, when I got a PC for the first time, it was a second hand computer with windows 98 and some stuff from the previous owner. Among some small games there was one game that felt like space-age technology: sci-fi themes, 3D world you can explore, NPCs and items you can interact with, aliens and soldiers fighting, crazy secret-tech weapons. It left a good lasting impression, despite barely running on that computer :D
I kept playing the old version of Half-Life for thousands of hours in singleplayer and with mods, until many years later I started playing it on Steam for Linux. I got to play it in multiplayer with friends and random folks. The month of the 25th Anniversary was a crazy time for multiplayer.
Half-Life is still a great game that has stood the test of time and likely will continue to be looked back upon fondly. As a CS fan, I'm biased. I already know the movement and gun play is superb. The enemy AI is interesting to interact and fight against especially as you're occasionally given the opportunity to watch different factions fighting each other as you pick off the survivors. Admittedly, the game loses steam once you travel to Xen, but overall it doesn't lessen Half-Life's greatness
How are you supposed to play Half-Life? Are you intended to sprint at full speed, lunging around corners and blasting the nearest freak with a concoction of 12 gauge and .357 magnum? Or are you supposed to hold the walk button the entire time, lay claymores to pick off unsuspecting soldiers, work to save every scientist, to uncover every hidden area, to see every sight? The answer is: you're not supposed to play Half-Life. You're supposed to live it. How you survive it's horrors can only be determined by how you survive your own.
The story-telling is mostly environmental and dialogue based - there are no exposition dumps, so as far as I'm concerned, it still holds up!
My only complaint would probably be the friendly AI - it can be quite frustrating at times.
It is a REALLY good game, the graphics are not important, gameplay is important (My Opinion) and the gameplay is good.
its also very fun to shoot with the weapons :)
★★★★☆
The first time I ever played this game was in 2017, so don’t expect an amazing score from me. The games graphics is quite dated but the overall feeling and gameplay of the game still holds up quite nicely, there a few taboo fps things in the game like the platforming which devs mostly know doesn’t work well in a fps game.
The world of Half Life is quite fun to play through, the laboratory sections, the military camp areas, and the alien world sections were all equally fun to play through. The military camp sections felt the most out of place though, but that’s fine.
The gameplay is nice, the physics is more wacky than realistic with where we are today, but its still hell of a lot better than no physics and Half Life is the reason we are where we are today with physics in games. The variety of weapons are fine, but nothing that will blow you away or leave you saying “oh wow that’s cool” as its mainly generic weaponry.
The story was fun to experience, the puzzles were for the most part fun as well. The only negative I have to say about the game is that its quite old by now haha, and that the final boss was a pain to beat on the hardest difficulty haha.
Seeing as the game is quite old now I think my review score should be more focused on what I would have given it back in the day. As such I give Half Life 1 a 4/5, its a good game, but in my books it isn’t a MUST PLAY experience. At least not the original, I will see with time if the fan remake is worthy of MUST PLAY status.
The game's story is very great and like the game's mechanics.
so good and graphics not the best but super super fun no jokr
TLDR: Worth it.
Pro:
+ Runs beatifully on modern hardware, with vrr displays.
+ Action rich Adventure
+ Atmospheric Environments
+ Atmospheric Music
+ Very good Gun Play
+ The story is told through the environment. (You live through the story.)
+ Game starts at the right resolution.
+ Game runs on a potato.
+ Very intuitive Controll Scheme
Contra:
- I encountered a game breaking bug, which lead me to waste 1h and to partially reload the game.
- Game is capped at 100 fps.
- The last fight wasn't very intuitive. It took me 1,5h. Though through it I mastered the long jump mechanic.
Storytelling, game design, and puzzle solving at its peak.
I played this game quite a little and it’s actually very good for the game came ou in 1998, I hope it has a good story and levels to play
It's jank for modern standards, but it paved the way for major improvements for modern shooters and games in general.
Will have to dock marks for the floaty physics, but still a solid title for the time
8/10
Finally checked the game just to see what all the fuss is about and it was a very pleasant experience for something that came out in the year that it did. Very impressive
does it even need to be spelled out as to WHY this game is SO GREAT?! Sure, graphics and visuals are... lacking.. but it's a game from 1998, for christ sakes, if you want the same game with better graphics, go spend 30 - 40 bucks on Black Mesa, this is the nostalgia version, the one that birthed many memes, a hilarious yt series (Half-Life VR but the AI is self-aware) and much more.
hard game, ok story. this game was extremely hard to figure out. especcially in the xen dimension. i was stuck there not being able to do anything but fight wqaves of enimies as they spawned with no exit. storywise, its ok. failed test. milkitary just tryna killl evberyone, yadda yadda. but its ok i guess. just copuldnt really understand it. my keyboard sucks and i am NOT gonna fix this grammar.
Holy shit this game was annoying. I did enjoy some parts of it but it was mainly the gameplay which annoyed me the most. I do get this game was made in the 90s, and it is impressive for it's time. I defiantly won't be playing this again since I only played this game out of obligation for Half-Life 2, which I'm excited to play. But sure get this game if you're interested in the Half-Life games and is good at shooting games. If you're not good at shooting, maybe try Black Mesa.
This is probably one of the best single-player experiences of all time, at least for its age. Now, of course, it's buggy and janky, but if you accept this was a game from the 1990s, you will be very impressed and you will have a great time.
very old, not too bad. worth the casual playthrough for sure. Especially at a cheap price. i guess its gaming history?
Gaming history as one of the best !!!! You can see how modern games have taken inspiration from half life and how the game single handled dictated how the next 2 decades of game development would look like
Already played a pirated version of HL1 and as expected, runs way better.
it was my first time playing this game and it was very good. Im currently playing hl2 and i cant wait to see what happens next. Also whos that guy in the suit?
This game is perfect runs very smooth when it comes to recording very buggy makes it very funny ladders suck this game is really fun
don't go into this game as if it were a run and shoot game. actually think about your actions, y'know, like what the back of the box said: "Run. Think. Shoot. Live." though a certain alien planet does make the game irritating.
still play it tho esp if it's on sale, lawelz. =3
It is literally the granddaddy of all first-person story-driven shooters. In my opinion, the game has aged very well, there are some junkiness, but nothing critical. The gameplay is engaging from start to finish. The voice acting is golden meme material, and the music is an absolute 10/10.
Half life 1 is clearly a milestone and a great achievement in gaming. With that said there are a lot of buts. If you enjoy shooters I believe you should play this game and you will get something of value out of it. That is only if you can get past the old clunky mechanics, which to this games credit, is not nearly as bad as it may seem but the age is definitely still noticeable. The physics engine is still something to applaud, but they are a bit janky sometimes, i.e. xen, jump pads, and clunky acceleration/deceleration. One thing that I feel is swept under the rug due to the high praise of this game is the horrendously bullet spongy enemies, now let me preface this by saying i have only played the game on hard, but that should not excuse it from this horrible design choice. Every enemy take almost a full mag from your smg and most of the time 4 shotgun shots. Looking past that, this game was very fun as a whole and must have been the greatest game ever in the 90s/2000s and nowadays it hasn't aged the worst, but it's age should be brought up more.
Why yes this game has a bad problem with inconsistency (one level I understand the praise, others I wonder why I'm even playing it) but, the bright spots shine through, especially if you accept that it is from the 90s. If you can't play old games you should at least try this game for the 2 hour period and if you can't get past it's age then you will have a terrible time and should probably just refund it. Half-Life is a very fun game (for the most part) with a lot of charm and a monumental achievement in gaming history, but definitely still has a lot of blemishes that aren't really talked about a lot. If you go into this game expecting the masterpiece that people that played in 1998 say it is, you might be disappointed, but if you play it without those unrealistic expectations and an open-mind to older games, you will absolutely have a fun time with this game and get something of value from it.
Half-Life: 8/10
The last 2 hours of the game is a slog, but other parts hold up surprisingly very well. And the multiplayer is still alive and is a great fun, if you are into this kind of thing. Also I recommend playing on normal difficulty. I completed the game on Hard and later on Normal in the Source port, and I had a lot more fun with the latter.
8/10, the start of the Legend.
It took me forever to finally beat this. I've played all the other half life games including the fan-made remake of this game 'Black Mesa' but I never fully beat this until now. This is a classic and it's crazy to think this came out in 1998. Very innovative. Thank you valve for pushing the line.
This game is peak. Scientist experience disaster, find crowbar, use crowbar, find gun, gun go boom, aliens go dead. No more explanation required, absolute cinema.
one of my favourite games ever, fantastic atmosphere for a game from the 90s and vortigaunts look chill
+ Good story and maps, innovative gameplay for the time, doesn't feel like a 25 year old game. Really makes you appreciate how creative older games were when they didnt have the graphical fidelity that we have now.
- Mechanics especially of player movements and the puzzle levels can get annoying af. Also there is barely any hints so you have to figure out a lot by trial and error / walkthroughs.
ok so ive been playin this game since 2014 and i absolutely loved it i can play this game for 1102391283 hours and still not get bored as ive already lost my old steam account ive played like 280+ hours half life on that tho js wanted to let you know its the best purchase ive ever made
With the game being so dated, playing in 2024 I definitely had some frustrations with the quality of life issues. FPS games and games in general have come a long to way when it comes to making a game feel good. These days you can tell when you're hitting an enemy, what you're taking damage from, etc. Half Life doesn't feel good to play in this aspect and the enemies are very spongy. On top of that, for a game with a fair amount of platforming the movement is difficult to control. Feels like running on ice in Minecraft at 2x speed. However, I'm very glad that I've now completed it as a long time half life 2 fan. It's all worth it in the end if you're a fan of the franchise IMO. If you aren't already a half life fan and this if your first game, you'll likely find it very challenging to play.
This should be the pack-in title for Steam. Basically any computer can run it, it just got an amazing update to make it compatible with all sorts of things. It's got big historical value. There are Snarks in it. If I was Gabe Newell I would make this the Wii Sports of Steam but I also understand that literally anyone can make a Steam Account so...
Buy it on sale? Get the Valve Complete Pack if you can. It's usually dirt cheap on any holiday sale.
I think this game has held up pretty well, but you might need to be in a specific mood to enjoy it to its fullest. When I first played Half-Life, I wasn't really the biggest fan of it, but more recently (with newfound motivation after the Half-Life 2 20th Anniversary Update), I ended up marathoning the game in two to three days.
Even though I didn't initially like the campaign enough to finish it, I would find myself playing the deathmatch mode in both this game and Half-Life: Deathmatch Source infrequently but repeatedly--I would keep coming back.
I decided to play this again, and I didn't know how far I would get. Once you get into the flow of each chapter and try all manner of techniques and weapons to fight the unique situations the game puts you through, the campaign becomes quite fun. I don't usually like shooters very much, but there is interesting variation in gameplay (you also do quite a bit of platforming and simple puzzle-solving) that it doesn't become too repetitive. All of the weapons in this game are very enjoyable and satisfying to use; as you progress through the game, you'll gain a better understanding of how both the enemies work and how your weapons can interact with them (for example, I initially used the shotgun on Vortigaunts, but over time, I realized they didn't have so much health that it was necessary, and it was far more efficient to use the magnum).
It's definitely more of a personal nitpick, but one part I didn't really like is the game's tendency spawning enemies in front of you and breaking structures as you're passing by them. This is done for cinematic effect, but there are instances where it could get you killed with very little chance for your survival, meaning reloading from a prior save (this game has quick saves, so it isn't too problematic.) There was also one instance near the end of the game where you need to guess which portals will progress you further into a laboratory complex, and if you enter a specific one, the game will instantly kill you with (seemingly) no warning. Since this only happens once in a multi-hour campaign, it's a very minor issue, but I think it should be mentioned nonetheless.
In addition to a campaign, this game also features a multiplayer deathmatch mode. I normally don't focus on these when I'm evaluating how much I like a game, but in the case of Half-Life, the deathmatch is actually very fun (and part of the reason I kept coming back to it)! You will probably be dominated by players who have been playing much longer than you and have all of the weapons in their inventory, but, as previously mentioned, the guns in this game have unique functions between each other, and, more significantly, feel very balanced where you have a chance of surviving most situations (assuming you don't only possess a pistol from just respawning).
If you're considering playing Half-Life, I can highly recommend it, especially since it's usually very cheap on Steam sales. Not only is it an influential game in the first-person shooter genre, but it holds up quite well where I think it's worth at least one or two playthroughs, even today, not to mention the deathmatch mode you can keep coming back to.
for a game that old enough for a PHD in theoretical physics at this point it's not bad, apart from being sort of janky at times it's pretty aight really good piece of gaming history.
it's a great game with tons of fun to be had so stop looking at reviews and just get the game
10/10 would recommend
Over 25 years old, and Valve still updates it like it was released yesterday. One of the best FPS games even to this day, and one of the greatest pioneers of the genre, comparable with the original DOOM.
