ALONE?
Has a total of 8 trading cards.
I have mixed feelings around this game. The atmosphere was pretty good, but the progression and conclusion felt lacking. I found myself working towards an end goal and not really ever reaching it, so it all felt a bit pointless. Movement was a bit janky.
Not bad...
6 of 5 must play.
5 of 5 great story great game-play.
4 of 5 great story average game-play.
3 of 5 average story average game-play.
2 of 5 play only if it's your favourite genre.
1 of 5 play if you have nothing better to do.
0 of 5 play if you're a masochist.
-1 of 5 avoid.
Alone? score is 2 of 5.
Positive Comments:
You can jump-scare randomly. Horror games do these things sometimes so its acceptable.
Save function.
Cheap.
Negative Comments:
Max resolution is 1920*1080 so you cannot play with fullscreen if you have 21:9 monitor.
FOV function is on test. Game relesead on 2016 and game doesn't uptade almost 5.5 years.
When you turn around yourself you can see fraps on your screen and your eyes are being disturbed even you used to playing.
Story is so weak. Just you can learn on notes and some visions.
Total: Negative things more than positive stuff to me. You can buy for cards if you want.
I only recommend it to people who like short cheesy scary games. This game had a story, and has multiple endings in which you are forced to do. But the game never restarts completely.
I believe this game was going to expand but never did unfortunately and is now an abandoned scary game. The jump scares were so cheesy, and didn't make the game necessarily scary.
This game to me seems to be more of a practice in the making. Mouse sensitivity was also weird. Never could figure out a happy middle, either it was too slow or just right but moved weirdly.
I purchased, I downloaded, I concurred.
I enjoyed this fun and simple horror puzzle game. It was perfect for a quick afternoon game. It's perfect for a kid or maybe an adult starting to play games. None of the puzzles are so hard you have to look them up.
This game has horrific player movement. Even though the frame timing and frame rate are stable, the mouse smoothing is non existent. It is super choppy and not enjoyable at all, and that is coming from someone that loves indie horror games cheesy or not. Do not waste your money. The developer hasn't fixed the most basic player movement issues after being out for a long time, they won't be fixing it anytime soon or ever. I run an RTX 3080, so it is the game for sure. Hope I spared someone the pain of buying this "gem".
It's not terrible but no one needs to actually take the time to play this. It's just very basic and not very well executed. It's your standard Steam horror where you're in a creepy house and you have to find out what happened to your sister, you get some spooks and story along the way.
The first problem is, the story is terrible. Your sister has invited you back to the family home in a letter and you find more of her notes around the house which detail some historic negative connotations with the house and there's the usual nonsense of cults and demons and so on. And then it's wrapped up awfully in what I assume is meant to be setup for a sequel.
Gameplay wise it's all very basic. You're never actually under any threat from the demon except at the very end so the scares are essentially limited to the demon momentarily appearing in a doorway, or a brief flicker of your vision turning red. You go about, collect items/keys to unlock more of the house, and that's it.
It takes an hour to get 3 of the 4 endings, and I didn't care enough to track the last one down. And if this review didn't indicate enough that the developer must have just thrown this out the door without a second glance, the game itself tells you this - they never bothered to remove the early access indicator on the main menu for the steam release. Just avoid.
I bought this game and have been unable to play it. The game opens but it doesn't go past the loading screen. And if it does go past the loading screen, the game instantly crashes. Pretty pissed I spend money on this for it to not work ut it wouldnt be the first time with Steam.
Man this game kinda sucks. The game is bland and boring. The story is common and I have seen it done better so many times before. Like I have no main complaints other then the game is boring and bland. That and the load screen take forever. Like how can such a small and simple game take so damn long to load. It stopped me from getting all the achievements as I couldn't stand sitting through the load screen a single time more. Hard pass man. Hard pass.
Mess of an unoptimized game. The title screen looks like it barely left Early Access but apparently it still is because they didn't even bother to remove the Early Access tag on the title screen.
Avoid.
ALONE? is not Deceptive Games' first venture into the world of horror, but it is one of their earliest releases. The publisher/developer have since put out a VR version of this title, and suffice it to say that if you have a VR headset you'll be better off in that environment instead; since you take away the two worst flaws this release has to offer by doing so. It's not that ALONE? is a particularly bad game, but it's extremely rough around the edges, and the content within is pretty raw.
The story here barely exists; there are no voice-overs or cutscenes, just sparse notes, some voiceless subtitles, and four endings to find. However, you play as a man named Sam who has been summoned by his astranged sister, Michelle, to her house to help her with the weird events that have been going on for the last several months. It's made clear that Sam and Michelle don't exactly get along, and as such you can complete the game within 30 seconds if you manage to figure out the first ending. Otherwise, there's about an hour worth of content waiting to be explored.
The first thing that should really be addressed about ALONE? is that it didn't actually receive a final build. When you load the game up, it still says "Build 1.0.5 Early Access", even though the game has been long outside of Early Access. This would account for the reason as to why some of the scrapped, unfinished puzzles have been left in the game; such as keys that never get used and screws that have no purpose. The biggest downfall here are the controls, particularly when it comes to the mouse movement. When looking around, it feels like you're actually swinging the camera around, and this can even sometimes cause the player to glitch out of bounds for a few seconds. The camera movement is extremely sluggish, although trying to pick up a note or object is, oppositely, very sensitive.
However, with everything that ALONE? does wrong, it does manage to get all aspects of its horror elements right. The game itself is undeniably tense, and you never actually know what's going to happen next. There are only two forms of real scares, but the unsettling ambience is a great example of how appropriately used immersive soundscapes can help even the most lackluster release become worth playing. There's just something deeply captivating about this title, and it's worth exploring the haunted house to read all of the notes and experience all of the text-based endings.
With all that said, it's definitely worth grabbing ALONE? on sale; it frequently only costs a few cents, paying full price for an hour's worth of play time is not recommended. It's a decent way to kill an hour or two, though it's certainly not the best horror game out there. If you can get past its rawness, you're sure to have a good time. If you have a VR headset, consider grabbing the VR version of this game instead, as doing so eliminates the horrible, clunky camera movement and masks the barely-passing graphics.
Rating: 3.0/5.0 - Average, can take it or leave it.

Couldn't finish it.
That's not me getting bored, or upset with the game. I literally could not finish it.
I had three of four endings, and apparently, the fourth one isn't quite so easy to get.
I tried - but the game was so corrupted with its glitches that when I left the house, I got the first ending (bad ending), and the game wouldn't reload my save without crashing.
This game needs a lot of fixing. It looks quite rushed, there are a few typoes in the notes that have been left around the place, and the glitches are quite severe at some points (like the above).
You play as a man who goes in search of his sister in an old house. I didn't quite follow the story as well as I could have.
If I were to summarise the story for you:
Ed enters the old house (or hostel? For some reason, it reads hostel and house on the bad ending), makes his way around a constantly changing environment while being stalked by the demon Abraxas - a malevolent entity summoned by a cult his abusive uncle was a part of. Ed is looking for his sister in the house, and finds numerous notes left by her implying that strange things were happening and that she explored the house to the same extent Ed ultimately does. He finds his way through an underground cavern through a door in the house. The cavern takes him to a morgue where his uncle and the cult held special interest (as evidenced by the eyes drawn onto the walls).
Ed then finds that the morgue leads right back into a plain section of the house where he reads a note that his sister was never in the house in the first place and that she's gone someplace else. This is about as far as I got because then Ed says he should just go back.
I did so - and despite a couple of issues hindering my progress, I made it back to the front door where I exited and got the same ending I would have gotten had I exited when I started the game.
As other reviews of the game has said, if the game crashes on you, or you get one of the endings - you need to restart. It won't register certain things have already happened if you don't. I needed to manipulate glitches to get past the steam at some points because the game had forgotten that I had turned the steam off.
I attempted to replay the game a little bit to try and get further but the glitches were far too cumbersome.
Given that the devs have two more recent titles (The Initiate and Silent Descent), they probably ain't gonna put too much emphasis on fixing the issues at hand. Which is why I'm just gonna leave it with a thumbs down. Also, given that this game is essentially the same kind of animal as the previous game (Kidnapped) - it's a bit of a kick in the nuts that they essentially recycled the first two levels of Kidnapped and added in a spooky demon to add some more flair to it.
C for Effort. 3.5/10. (Game was reasonably engaging in some areas and I felt a certain degree of atmosphere to it.)
The movement, oh my god. Are we playing an alien? Has he not mastered basic human coordination? Why do we move like a someone learning to walk for the first time, only instead of legs, there are stilts? I really tried to keep playing this. I wanted to, even. The graphics are okay, the sound is pretty good, it's creepy. Story is just intriguing enough at the beginning. But the mouse movement is horrifying. Had to turn it off less than an hour in because it was making me so nauseous.
For how short this game is I have a decent amount of time clocked into it from trying route and speedrun it. I've also got all the achievements so far.
From a horror game stand point if you get your kicks out of jump scares this is decent for the amount of money, especially if you can grab it on a sale. It didn't really have that much of a psychological level of horror for me.
There is quite a bit of back tracking which can be annoying since the walk speed is slightly slow however it's not THAT bad. I'll agree that the game, atleast for me, was difficult to understand where you are supposed to go, but always eventually figured it out.
I haven't read any of the notes so I cannot comment on how the story is, however there does seem to be a lot of it.
At a speedrunning standpoint this game has a lot to offer in side of speed tech such as walking through walls and figuring where trigger events are, I managed to get the true ending down to a minute and a bit.
As I stated before, for me it was well worth the money and I got a good amount of gameplay out of it and plan on returning to it to write guides on the achievements when I get a bit of time.
This game was short and frustrating. It wouldn't have been so frustrating if the mouse controls were better, but for some reason, they would basically randomly become sluggish or warp speed. It was nearly impossible to point to an object on the first try. Most objects required several attempts to point at.
Furthermore, the game is nearly devoid of story. Without giving spoilers, your character gives a background that he's come to look for his sister in their childhood home where their uncle mistreated him for years. The rest of the story, you uncover through notes your sister has left about the house. Many of her notes don't even make sense... They're written as though she's just musing to herself.
Overall, this wouldn't be a bad game if they would just fix the mouse controls, and maybe add a bit more story. For now, though, I can't recommend it.
There's the good and the bad to this game. My reccomendation is pending the developers fixing the HUGE bug with saving advancement data (see below).
Pros:
- Excellent storyline
- Just the right amount fo scares for me
- Music/sounds is awesome and sets the tone so well
- Just the right amount of search vs story
Cons:
- Mouse sensitivity is only along x axis. Y axis will always be too harsh
- It runs choppy (this is helped by lowering mouse sensitivity, atleast laterally.)
- Takes awhile to load (only the first time, was not a dealbreaker for me)
- You can fall off the map and be thrown back into your autosave (upstairs in office, back corner I stepped off the map)
- If you get an ending, you MUST START OVER. And I mean this. The game does not recognize that you have done the things needed to "trigger" the next step. I know this because I triggered advancement, got an ending and when I reloaded my save I absolutely COULD NOT get it to trigger the next section, no matter what I did (for over an hour). So I had to start over. THIS. Is frusterating. I will not get the 4th ending because I would have to start all over again to get it (and I made it up until the exact moment of it, but didn't react fast enough). I am so disappointed at this. THIS is a dealbreaker for me. (It might not be for you, the entire game, once known can probably be played in 1 hour- or even less- if rushed)
Again, the storyline is amazing. I loved it, just my kind of game. But it was so frusterating for me as a "fan" to have to start from scratch to try something else when I died. It's like writers killing off your favorite character in a miniseries. It is hard to suggest this game, but I think I will, PENDING CORRECTION OF THIS HUGE BUG WITH SAVES. If they are fixed (see patch notes), then buy it!
Potentially interesting game, but definitely not in a finished state of development.
I'm very puzzled. The game is so approximately developed - jerky camera movements, extremely rough controls - that it looks like the product is in beta stage.
Even the low price point doesn't make it worth in such condition. If the developers clean it up and bring it to a releasable state, then it's likely a good product, but not before.
This game is average. I did like the atmosphere and the deliberate slow pace and to a degree the story that unfolds. The puzzle solving was quite minimal and overall this game is a wander around and open up doors investigation. If the game was free i might give it a slightly positive rating, I might, but for 3 bucks it was meh. Maybe the VR version would push it up a notch...maybe.
i was super excited to buy this game at first but as soon as it finished downloading i went into steam to play like normal, but after i got past the letter that michelle writes to her brother it goes straight to a loading screen and as soon as it loads "enemy" it crashes, to the point i cannot even use my mouse and i have to restart my computer. This happened at least 3 times and i still cant play it. I dont know if this is because of early release and this isnt just me or its because its just not compatible with mac (even though it cleary says that it is) but i'm starting to think i should get my money back..
I bought this thinking it would be a fun game because of the positive reviews...Wow was I wrong. This game made me feel like I was actually having a stroke...at one point i'm pretty sure I smelled burning toast. the movent is extremely shakey and i had to turn my mouse sensitivity almost all the way down just to be able to move. I moved my mouse a fraction of an inch and I end up turning around completely. The game could be scary if you werent so busy getting angry at it.
