The Isle: A World Designed to Kill You

The Isle is intended to be a gritty, open-world survival horror game. Explore vast landscapes of dense forest and open plains, traverse treacherous mountains and wade through dark swamps where horrors lurk. Hidden within are ruins that hold insight as to what came before. Through it all, keep in mind there is only one goal: survive.
There is little in the way of hand holding or ulterior precepts to alter play styles or purpose. It's kill or be killed. In the end, the only one you can trust is yourself. Over the course of development the islands and their inhabitants will radically change, ever-evolving as players themselves learn how to flourish and thrive. Your mistakes will be punished. Expect no survivors.
Massive Prehistoric Multiplayer

Become the beast within. When joining The Isle, you can play as one of dozens of unique creatures, from tiny darting herbivores like Dryosaurus to blood-thirsty giants such as T. Rex or Allosaurus (with many more still to come!) As a dinosaur, you'll be the epitome of majestic, cunning and ferocious. Use your natural abilities and senses to stay off the menu and grow into a stronger, more capable creature.
Engage with a living prehistoric ecosystem as you become either predator or prey on servers featuring up to 100+ players, all of them as hungry and dangerous as you. Form packs/herds, create nests, defend your offspring, hunt, and claim territory. A single mistake can spell your demise.
Survival or Sandbox?

The Isle's core game mode is Survival, a tense and difficult experience where you need to grow fast or die young. Dinosaurs in Survival mode progress through several life stages, starting out small and vulnerable. Use your scent ability, night vision and wits to survive long enough to grow, becoming more powerful and unlock new abilities such as nesting. Because of the time needed to develop a full character life cycle, not every creature is or will be playable in Survival, though more will be added in future updates.

However, sometimes you don't want to struggle to survive, or you don't have the time to go through a dinosaur's whole life story. And that's okay. For players who want a less intense experience, Sandbox mode lets you play an expanded roster of dinosaurs (and soon humans!). You can jump right in as an adult super predator or a peaceful giant, with no major penalties or consequences from dying. We won't judge.
A Global Community Story

The Isle features a narrative told strictly through the environment, achievable only through immense cooperation among players. Are you stranded? Can you just leave? What is AE? How did the dinosaurs get here? What is the distant call that pierces the night?
It will take the entire community to answer these mysteries and unravel the purpose to their being on The Isle, and each discovery will directly affect the future of the game's storyline.
Future Development Goals

We realize that there is a long road ahead, and a lot of work to be done to turn this into the game we want it to be. Throughout development, we will be adding a lot more to The Isle and incorporating user feedback in how we evolve the experience. Some of our planned features include:
- Playable aquatic and aerial creatures
- Even more playable dinosaurs with complete life cycles
- Two new playable factions: modern humans & the indigenous
- Evolve into advanced "strain" versions of certain dinosaurs
- Realistic dinosaur AI that uses complex behaviours
- Additional world biome types such as thick jungles
- Dynamic aerial drop-in spawn system
- Global in-game world quest
- Localization of all in-game menus & text
- Better accessibility & customization options
- Steam Achievements, Trading Cards, Emotes
- Mod support using Steam Workshop
All that and more are on our radar going forward. We started with a plan of just a mere handful of playable carnivores, but based on player demand we expanded our scope, increased that number greatly and introduced herbivorous dinosaurs as well. Listening to our community has been instrumental in guiding our process and helped to correct our mistakes, and we hope that together we can transform The Isle into the ultimate dinosaur game.

Let me start by saying that this game is very fun. plenty of realistic combat/roleplay potential to be had here. When i say potential, I mean it. Evrima is not good whatsoever at the MOMENT. Legacy on the other hand, had a great vision, good mechanics and amazing rag-dolling physics. It is a shame they ended development on it, although it is still a great game! Definitely the best dino game that still keeps its realistic factor.
absolute dogshit of a game, way too realistic to be any fun. When you download the game for the first time it's a version scrapped 5 years ago and it's so infuriating you just die in the stupupidest ways instead of actually having a chance to fight most times and it teaches NOTHING about its compex mechanics NOT EVEN CONTROLS the only positive thing about this game is that you can play as a dinosaur and even that can't compensate.
Imagine spending over 2 hours trying to figure out how to play the game, only to resort to watching YouTube videos to realize you need to change the settings in Properties > Betas to the evrima branch in order to even PLAY THE CURRENT GAME! FIX YOUR GAME DEVS! 10 years and no tutorial or proper game launch?!
Now I can't get a refund on this garbage. Don't make my same mistake.
just to let you all know. This game was in earlier access for over 9 years now. And it feels like no progress was ever made and the only thing the game has going for it is that you play as a dinosaur and the diet mechanic. And the map is just way to big. i was in a 100 plus server and i didn't find nobody for like 40 minutes. and the many bugs and clashes i have encountered.
in my opinion i've wasted £15 this is a waste off time and i recommend you wait for the game to get out off "earlier access if it will ever come out."
PSA: For those new to the game, the best / latest version has to be selected in the game properties:
1. Right click on the game in your library
2. Click Properties
3. Click Betas
4. Select EVRIMA Public Branch
Enjoy!
(Evrima, as of early 2025)
Migration system is dumb, it would be great if it just incentivised movement by giving different buffs or perks, but no instead the game literally just only spawns food in one single small area that you have to go to. It completely blocks you from exploring around the map in an open world game, and instead you just have to mindlessly follow your compass because there's no food spawn anywhere else in the world. makes a big map feel even more empty when you can't actually go anywhere on your own volition and instead have to sit in whatever circle the game tells you to.
The roster of playables still isn't as good as legacy, graphics look blurry even with motion blur disabled, there's a bug that blocks you out of chat and instead makes the enter key change the game from windowed to fullscreen, and the combat is too convoluted and unintuitive because each animal has like 2-4 different stances that have different attacks for each direction you're facing and your relative movespeed.
There's nothing to do in the game. There's never any AI to find anywhere. It's hard to find players. It's an empty world where you can run around as a dinosaur until you starve to death.
SECOND EDIT: This has to be the most ridiculous review ever, there is so much to love about the game but it feels very early access for how long they have been working on it. Finally found a dino I love to play and have been sticking with that until they fix everything. It really is a fun game just so much needs worked on it really is a gamble buying it now. I've played enough hours, clearly enjoying it but it really does need some like objectives or something other than eat, drink, don't fall off a cliff. If you like those things buy the game, otherwise I'd wait.
EDIT: What in the world is the fall damage in this game? There doesn't seem to be any consistency at all. Like I just spent 3 hours getting a dino to 95% growth and barely set foot off of a MILD slop, not a cliff, not a drop off, just a minor incline that was not even the height of my dino and went from being 100% health, perfect diet, water full, 0 injuries vibing having fun to completely deceased after not even a millisecond of being slightly airborne going down the worlds most manageable incline that you can casually walk up. I've updated to not recommended because this game has so much work to be done before it is playable.
FIX YOUR SERVERS This gets a thumbs up because it's cash money getting to be a dino. BUT there was a 30 minute wait just to get into a server, and then I got kicked from the server due to me being glitched into a rock. So now I'm sitting for another 30 minutes waiting to rejoin my friends almost back in number 5 in line ONLY TO BE RANDOMLY DISCONNECTED FROM THE QUEUE AND RIGHT BACK TO THE BACK OF THE LINE. I've been waiting an hour just to rejoin my friends and now it's been so long everyone is going to bed and I've just spent my night chilling in a queue. Fix it. More servers. I just want to be a dino with my pals :(
dont even try it, u want a good dino game go pay 10 bucks more for path of titans developers that actually care are making the game so. ill say it again dont waste ur money go buy PATH OF TITANSSSSSSSS
The game looks cool. Unfortunately it's one of those game with really terrible server support.
Also the dino's I was interested in playing are:
"The playables you listed are all Sandbox dinosaurs, they used to be playable in the progression gamemode, before that gamemode was scrapped for Survival. The sandbox dinos are all the playables that were never added to the survival gamemode before legacy was abandoned for Evrima. So they're normally not available in survival" (<--From a Reddit post a yr ago)
So the game had content, but it's no longer completely playable because the developers acting ADHD with their product can keep repackaging it? ..with LESS content?...
Yeah, I'm usually patient with games and their developers but ..I'll take my money back for now on this one.
If you want to be a dinosaur in a PvP free-for-all with 150 other players, then this is the game for you. The developers have plans for an additional 20 dinosaurs for future updates and the Evrima graphics are stunning. You can currently join large group warfare or play solo and stalk other people.
Want to troll other dinos instead for hours of entertainment? You can do that too. This game satisfies the itch of wanting something competitive that doesn't feel like a huge waste of time.
My only complaint is that there isn't any kind of leader board or profile data. It would be nice if players could see your overall account stats inside of the game. Your kills, your deaths, any strange achievements you've unlocked like the saltwater mutation. Maybe your most played dino???
I am getting my fun out of the game but I think I'll lose interest soon without a leader board system keeping things grounded.
This is the only thing I think it lacks in retaining players because after you've spent the day dying, killing, and trolling... It means nothing.
The game needs a lot of work. The servers are way too small and there aren't enough servers so if you intend to play this you have to do it on a day you have off. And if you're trying to play with friends good luck finding them. Having to use a website map that isn't visible onscreen is absolutely terrible. This game needs years of work at this point and I genuinely don't see it getting the updates and work put into it that it desperately needs. On top of all that, the audio has an issue where it won't turn off after the game is turned off. Yes, I checked task manager, nothing was running in the background. And no you cant turn off the music in the settings so you can actually hear yourself think.
this game was so good perfect but they removed chosing your spawn which i kinda get but its a pain to play with friends and there is no new content but its still good game
Game devs never cared, still don't. Progress is incredibly slow. It literally takes years for significant changes to come. By this rate the game will still be in early access in 2030, no exaggeration.
On top of this, minor changes, like bug fixes and balance change almost never come, when they do they are poorly implemented, it seems like the devs never actually played the game.
No update has managed to solve this buggy mess, which is ironic because we were all told that switching from legacy to envirma would incur fewer bugs and allow for faster and more advanced changes. Essentially none of what was promised was ever delivered upon, shame as is one of only a few games in its genre.
Overall 3.5/10, buy if you want to play in the far and distant future of the game that was promised YEARS ago.
I started playing this game a couple of months ago, and haven't stopped since. It tickles every part of my brain, and also scares the everloving shit out of me. 10/10
TLDR: Toxic community, toxic dev/s, lackluster game, hours of gameplay with nothing to do every session, don't give them more money (no content, no updates, devs silence criticism)
--
Sure, it looks pretty, but the game is extremely boring. Only thing to do is to eat, drink, die repeat. Takes hours to get to a point where you can safely interact with other players without instantly dying, but you do anyways because combat sucks and players are so starved of things to do in the game, they seek others out just to kill them or to toot at each other as different dinos for a while.
I played it a lot years ago because I found it fun (it was super different back then), but now its the most boring game in the world.
Gameplay loop is literally the following if you're on your own --> spawn as a baby, spend hours eating and drinking on repeat, become an adult, die and do it again. No joke. Very little interaction with the environment or others for most of every single game session.
There is little AI (the ones that are there aren't immersive, they stand still or run around aimlessly until killed), there's no map so you barely know where you're going when you start playing, there's no one around for hours of gameplay. There's so little to do, people turn to finding and killing each other because its the only thing that's fun, which leads to problems other people have already mentioned.
In theory, it'd be great to experience immersive dinosaur or creature simulator games. But the thing is, it has to be a game; the isle barely has enough content to be considered a game imo. It is not fun or immersive, and the current systems and mechanics do not encourage the gameplay that it needs to be fun.
Saddest of all, the devs are not interested in working on the problems that are currently ruining the game. They're out of touch with what's happening, and the lead dev doesn't mind sacrificing the game's entire community to get what they want. On that note, don't give them more money as they literally burn it for their own interests (no updates, no content, only promises, they silence their community, poorly designed game, decade in early access with nothing to show but pretty game models).
It has been a decade... and there is literally no gameplay mechanics. Again, just pretty models.
Don't buy, will only lead to disappointment.
This game has been in Early Access for nearly 10 years and we still only have 10 or so Creatures to play as, and a map that's too big and performance-heavy for its own good. Combine that with a toxic fanbase/devs, and you have a recipe for dissapointment. I would not recommend this game.
Trying to come back after several years because I saw some fun looking gameplay on YouTube, but the absolute state of getting the game to run is a complete joke, not to mention logistical nightmare for the player. Apparently you have to go through all these hoops and hurdles just to get the game to run, buy validating files, downloading 3rd party bug fixes from shady sources on the internet, then i' told to disable my firewall and or antivirus programs. Fuck all that. Fix the game and make it so players can simply download the game and fucking play it. Is it that difficult to do? Is it really so much for someone who paid for the game to ask that the god gamn "Play" button actually let me play the game. ow has it gotten so bad that the community, THE COMMUNITY, has to come out with a bug fix for the game just to even launch. Hot garbage, don't waste your time or money.
TL;DR
Game is in a state where 3rd party files and fixes are needed to simply run the game. Avoid at all costs.
for over 8 hours i have tried to get this game to work but nothing does. game load in with zoomed it menu. cant change resalution because accept button is off screen can load a game can do anything. this was a waste of money on a game i used to love to play when it first came out.
Possibly the worst game I have ever played. The vast majority of the gameplay is simply walking slowly forwards, heading towards water or looking for food. The mechanic to grow is to simply wait for a few hours, plodding about through the same repeating landscape....oh look...another tree...wow....a rock...or you can just do nothing. Once fully grown, the objective of the game is to what? You can have a 4 second fight which consists of clicking to bite kind of near the other dinosaur and see who falls over first...if you die its back to the beginning. Or instead of fighting you can just stand about (this is what most people seem to do). DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME ON THIS TERRIBLE GAME.
I've played 100+ hours of this game, it was fun at first but I've determined a few things that turned me away and made me lose interest;
- Development is INCREDIBLY SLOW, practically a crawl and this game has been in development for 9 YEARS. Legacy was scrapped in favor of Evrima which had things start all over again, it feels like the Devs don't really know what they want to do.
- The map is too large with too little players to support it. There are mountains separating you from others and it is just so expansive, the most you can do is wander around finding nothing, not even AI before you starve to death before you've even encountered anyone or anything. This was my biggest gripe. Finding NOTHING. NO ONE. And starving because there is no AI. Migration patterns do not help as they're supposed to with solving the lack of interaction, at least for me, personally.
- That being said, there's a lack of new player support. Most people fresh to the game just get dumped into it with little instruction of the mechanics of the game or what anything means - they're left to find out on their own and do it the hard way. For me, I just resorted to looking at keybinds and even then it still didn't tell me everything there was to the game.
As it stands right now, I can't play this game with any confidence in its current development. I have no fun in playing it, but I'm sure others will and /are/ having fun because they make the most of what they have. Dino lovers, we deserve better.
Amazing gameplay and graphics, its a real challenge and is fun, however is now dead with only 2 servers
Basic experience, as a new player:
"Spawn in, no food, die." Repeat over and over till you uninstall or are lucky and find someone that you might play together and has experience.
(years ago i was lucky to find a group and it was fun!)
So today i wanted to give it another shot.
My experience?
The game freezes on launch, no matter what branch i try.
In short: Fuck this 10 year old game that still plays like a pre-alpha with huge issues.
I think it is a very unforgiving and complex game. Developers are constantly making it harder, and making it more buggy with each update.
That being said though, it is such a well made game. The amount of love each dinosaur has gotten and the great improvement to evrima from legacy is insane. Even with all the bugs and the issue with hackers and mixpackers roaming the plains, i will always recommend this game to other people. I love it.
bought this in a whim due to a "dino itch" but the novelty falls off after the 20th hour and the glaring issues start to get noticed such as
-fake dino sounds are played to make it seem like there's activity but its a lie (fly as a pteranodon to a beach and listen to noises coming from nowhere)
-lack of info for the UI elements
-abysmal stamina regeneration even with perfect diet and its compounded effect of "more stamina = more stamina regen" is one of the most stupidest things i've ever seen in a video game
-some dinos are just better then others
-map seems big but its just areas sectioned off by rocks, fenced off and split by ravines
-growing takes long even with perfect diet
-mutations given at certain growth stages are locked at that growth stage IE: a mutation that shows up at growth stage 2 will not be shown in the list at growth stage 3
-playing smaller dinos means there's *less* food for carnivores when you get killed
-the combat is just dogwater where you frequently get hit when when you're nowhere near the claw or bite animation
-no respawn button if you get stuck meaning you have to AFK ~1 hour just to play again when you do get stuck *and you will get stuck and lose that dino*
-to track a dino you need either a blood trail or footprints but good luck finding footprints
-AI critters are never there when you need them but when you're flourishing they're spawning in front of you in packs.
if i could refund i would.
Fun concept of dinosaur survival, but there is almost nothing to do. Having 2 different, active versions of the game running at the same time is stupid, fun on official servers largely depends on which map they chose to host (gateway sucks), and with how small and slow updates are, this might as well be abandonware.
First let me state that I used to be a big fan of this game. Yet the main dev seems to be intent on sinking a good product. First of all the migration system is absolutely terrible, often finding food in these migration zones are still pretty much impossible. The last map had a much better system of organically moving the players around via the maps design but this is not found on the new map everyone is forced to play on, Gateway. The map is a jumbled mess of walls and cliffs which make gameplay more of a slog, which you have to navigate around with the migration system on your ass. Moving around is also more of a slog because the main dev decided to make stamina generation a lot more punishing make the character sit perfectly still to regain stamina meanwhile in previous iterations you would regain stamina at a fairly decent pace while walking. Even downloading the game is a mess because it downloads the build of the game that's been abandoned for the last 5 years.
download game
play legacy
join chinese server
instantly grow
notice good fps
realise evrima is a version for game
go on evrima
find a nice server
play as herrera
spawn at swamp
die of food
spawn south plains
find other herreras
they kill you
spawn again
find food
find other herreras
you have a group
go for water
croc eat you and you die
10/10 game 100% reccommend
The Devs of this game have completley squashed players fun values, by taking away the ability to play the game how they want, given how long ago mods have been gone, evrima is a buggy unplayable mess for most players and lacks any meaningful content, you would be lucky to see any large updates 3 years from now and that isn't gonna change as some developers who will not be named hate the community they fostered and attack people for their expectation or desire from the game, if they just allowed things like mods to exist on the old branch and stuff i could see this game picking up steam again but until then it will die slowly and painfully which is very sad as it really is the corner stone of dinosaur survival games, just being squandered by developers that hate their fans.
Game could be better if the Owner/lead dev wasn't a complete idiot and doesn't play his game to understand the issues
- Made this game back in 2016 just to do a 180 and create a second version of the game called "evrima" in 2020, abandoning the original game
- Has plenty of bugged locations that you spawn in and get trapped in so you waste your time dying with no respawn/kill button, best case to fix this is waiting for a admin response.
- Takes them 1 - 2 years roughly just to add "new" dino's from the legacy game.
- Lacks features for players to do within the game, the main object is just to eat, drink, rest, grow, repeat.
-They will occasionally add something new and interesting but that's once in a blue moon.
- Continues to try and implement bad ideas with community feedback saying not to cause it wouldn't be great for the game which lead this game getting review bombed.
- Owner has a track record for being the worst person in owning a game, probably just under YandereDev, very childish, can't handle criticism, fills people's heads with countless broken promises, doesn't handle competition and calls other games like this a scam.
This game isn't being made for the players, its being made for the guy who doesn't play his game
Its a fun game if you can find the right people to play with. I've found a group of guys while out exploring and surviving and we've been friends for years following. However, the vast majority of my experience with this game/community has been filled with ultra liberal, blue-haired freaks with have zero social skills. The discord mods are some of the dumbest and narcissistic people you'll ever come across. The dev team is probably similar as these weirdos tend to all gravitate towards each other in their echo chamber. As fun as the game play can be given certain circumstances, its not worth the headache having to deal with these life losers.
The official servers in this game are littered with people who don't follow game rules as well as survival rules. The admins will do absolutely nothing about mixpackers no matter how much the complaint is thrown out there. If you want to play a game where you constantly have to deal with scum of the earth people coming after you when it makes zero sense from a survival standpoint, and the admins doing nothing about said issue then this is the game for you. I swear to god ARK has a less toxic playerbase.
I enjoy this game. I enjoyed the original Isle and enjoy playing Evrima. The play of course feels different, but there are many aspects I like even better. It's come a long way since I last played about a year ago. I like many of the new systems. There are bugs, like invisible AI, holes in the world that are difficult or impossible to get out of, visual issues at times, and others. But I like playing a dinosaur. I like the world, and consider my time within Evrima Gateway to be enjoyable time well spent.
Get introduced by fren, play wit fren, run with fren, eat with fren, get rulebroke with fren, die with fren, have fun with fren, gamble with fren, chat with fren, afk grow with fren, kill utah with fren, break your leg with fren, rage with fren, enjoy time with fren.
The game is really hostile towards new players. No tutorial, no dino stats, not even a simple info sheet for a dino you picked with pros/cons and it's abilities. No game mechanics explanation. NOTHING is explained. I find it really annoying when developers think that this is fine and everyone can just learn to play the game on youtube, watching other people.
It seems it heavily favors the PvP aspect, because when you watch different videos everything seems to be fine - dinos eat dinos, find dead bodies of other players and live off them. Flying pteros eat fish, carnivores catch and eat animals. It really seemed like a cool and interesting game when watching the edited footage of gameplay where people know the map, mechanics and play on servers with high population...
But if you want (as I did) to chill and learn the game without the threat of being killed by anyone, then jump to some populated servers - this is really a whole different experience. This is a starve-to-death simulator where you run/fly around the EMPTY map, desperately trying to find something to kill/eat. You occasionally find some goat/deer but it's VERY rare and is not nearly enough to keep your stomach full.
Tried to play Pteranodon and catch some fish on a server where I was the only player - there were NO FISH at all. I've spent about an hour trying to find one. Nothing, just empty lakes and rivers. The only thing I've encountered was 1 rabbit. Of course all of my pteranodons starved.
While searching the internet about different aspects of the game (since nothing is explained in-game as I said) I constantly find discussions of "this is bugged" and "that's not working", and it really seems that the game is not really polished to provide a positive experience.
I think that playing the populated servers where you can eat other people would be fine, but if you're more interested in PvE - I'd say this game is not for you. All you get in PvE as a new player is confusion and frustration.
until the hacking is adressed i cannot reccomend this to anyone. the game itself is 9/10 but dying to a flying carno every day is not fun.
This game has a lot of potential, its fun, the community is great, it can be anxiety inducing and stressful. However there are some issues that I have with the game, it can be clunky, there are desync issues especially when you play some of the more delicate dinos, the ai needs some work as they tend to be pretty jerky, the jungle feel empty in terms of dinos and ai, the map can feel empty sometimes as 100 people doesnt feel like enough while at the same time the game needs optimization before servers should be increased. finally, the devs seem to be solid and working hard to make a great game but progress may seem slow for a lot of people. Still Solid 7.5/10
I'm going to split this review up into Legacy and Evrima since their so different. (Legacy is the og game, Evrima is public beta that gets updates and is a lot more advanced).
LEGACY
It's fun (I have 1000 hours in it...) BUT its the result of the devs trying to build a city on a single twig. The systems are simple (which can be a good or bad thing). There a lots of dinosaurs, and unlike evrima you can play rex :) None of the dinosaurs are very unique however. The maps are a mixed bag. V3 is big and nice but has some areas that are way too empty, and Thenyaw is way to small and crampt.
Many people can never find any english servers and only see chinese servers. There are videos on Yt on how to join english servers.
Note: If you don't like mix packing (dinosaurs of diff species grouping), there aren't really any servers for you.
So, Legacy is fun if you like the simple mechanics and just want to have dino eat dino. It doesn't recieve updates anymore.
EVRIMA
The game is hard to run, first thing to note. It's horrible optimized, and your FPS can suck (Although personally its been better recently). The dinosaur roster is starting to get big, not much smaller than Legacy, and most of them are very unique. Most dinosaurs in the game are "small" which I like, but if you want to be a giant rex, you cant.
Evrima is very atmospheric and you really do feel like a dinosaur when ur not having 2 fps.
If you can actually run it, evrima is very fun. It only recieves an update about once a year however.
Note: for both versions of the game, they do not give you any sort of tutorial, I suggest you go watch some videos to learn the game a little first.
I'd give the isle an overall 7/10!
good game, although dont get fixated on it too much or else the wait for the updates will feel like forever
you need to be willing to put a LOT of time into this thing if you eventually want to get the hang of it, this game does not respect your time that much. you'll have to grow something for like 3 hours for like 5 minutes of actual combat you can learn from, because as of right now this is really just a pvp game. gets pretty fun when you get the hang of it though
I have over 400+ hours in this game and can say it's not worth it. This game used to be a blast when official had the Isla Spiro map. Ever since Gateway was released it has been buggy to hell and unplayable. You are constantly lost, starving, or falling off a cliff. Water is bugged out with black boxes so you can't enjoy playing crocs. Music and ambiance just bug out constantly when walking around. The AI are broken as ever. Rubberbanding is an issue. Screen tearing is an issue. It's a game with A LOT of bugs, and it's been like this for 2 YEARS. Nothing has been fixed and it seems devs just don't care, they don't listen to their community. Which is sad cause I used to love this game. Seems like they tackled a project too hard for them to handle and just left it to rot.
Oh the hackers, don't get me started on the hackers in this game.
The mechanics in this game used to be so unique compared to POT, that's why this game was so amazing, it used to feel so realistic and I loved that. Now its just unbearable and a headache to boot up. Well... POT has been fun for me at least.
Would I recommend this game? Absolutely not, not until the devs decide to do something with their game again. I'd keep posted with their discord and maybe one day they'll update their game. Almost 10 years in Early access with hardly any improvements? Not good.
Game is riddled with hackers, has been since the release of Evrima. The devs have made no effort to resolve the issue with foreign code being run in the game for self-benefit of the user, there is no moderation on official servers and there is no type of ticket system in place to assist the player base with their lost time that they invested into the game if they die to a bug, hackers, or their player file is just bugged out of the system. All of these losses on account of the developers not wanting to fix the main issue in the game which is the exploitation of the fragile anti-hacking system (if one even exists) implemented on the game. Any sort of cries for help on the hackers that are bombarding the official servers currently fall on deaf ears and ruin the realism and immersion of the game, which The Isle is allegedly known for. However, they have made good progress on releasing new playables and expansion on their AI system. The game is currently in an unplayable state due to the influx of hackers. It breaks my heart that all of their effort of making the game more enjoyable is ruined because some players want to have an unfair advantage over others. Would not recommend playing on officials unless you have hacks of your own or plan on playing a gimmick playable that takes an hour to grow.
Not enough official servers, they are always full. Nothing to do once you reach adult other than PvP which then pushes a meta while some dinos are completely useless. Nesting is just a big no, nobody got time for that in a PvP game. Hackers run in bulk wasting the time of others playing legit; flying gators, invulnerability, and long ranged melee. Sit in queue, take a few hours to become an adult, die, repeat.
This game fucking sucks. I have tried so hard to enjoy this game but holy shit the herbs are so fucking overpowered it makes the game unfun. I spend hours getting full grown and meet up with 4-6 homies of the same species and we cant even kill a fucking 70% dib. Like i landed 15+ bites as a full grown carno and this mf isnt fazed at all. The idea of this game is amazing and ive had a lot of fun playing it but will no longer play it until the devs stop dick riding herbavores
Its a realy cool game But I would be cool to have some sort of tutorial sinse it took me weeks to figure all of the Mechanics out
Well that was the most atmospheric nothing I've gotten to do in a while.
The amount of fun you have with The Isle is entirely dependent on how many people you meet. And given that there are 100 people to a server you'd be surprised how many people you DON'T run into. Even then, the standard gameplay loop revolves around wandering around aimlessly looking for food/other players that you might go HOURS without seeing, which more often than not means instant death if you're playing a carnivore.
The most fun I've had with The Isle was playing as that prehistoric penguin thing (Beipiaosaurus) and making friends with the select few Crocs that didn't decide to kill me on sight.
Definitely a game that's more fun to watch than to play. Apparently the balancing is horrendous, but I didn't get involved enough in PVP to discover that for myself.
There are definitely better Dinosaur games out there.
This game has potential to be one of the greatest games ever made. But the current devs and admin think for some reason that mixed packing isnt a form of cheating and immersion destruction. They welcome it for all of the socially challenged people to have some kind of a disney movie experience on the official servers, and it destroys the game. The devs and admins need to stop making it their personal lives to sit in the discord and chat with these people and just make a good game that isnt broken for regular and actual gamers, not people searching for a life and friends of the same ilk caught in the same situation socially. Living in a dino game at their computers, and destroying it for the gamers.
the concept of the game is fantastic, but once you peel it back its the most horrific bug ridden, hacker infested mess you will ever encounter
do not risk getting engrossed like I did, I finished almost every session pissed at wasting hours losing a dino some jank bug or speed hacking troll.
Starving simulator. You literally play for 25-ish minutes, run around the forest, find nothing to eat, starve, rinse and repeat.
Even after today's update, which supposedly fixed AI spawns and I've been waiting for for a long time, has failed to provide any improvement to prevent starving over and over again.
My professional opinion (as I work as a gameplay programmer in the gamedev industry) is the producer and/or game director of this game has no idea what he's doing.
Not worth the time, the game's premise is great, but that's where the good ideas stopped.
cant even play this game because its such trash. I wish i was kidding when i say i am unable to run this game because of errors. The help is not user friendly whatsoever on the official discord. do not recommend
I'd like to start by saying this; Evrima is a great version of this game, it's fairly in-depth and there are a lot of niche things to learn. The developers are fairly slow to update as it seems like a very small percentage of the dev team actually work on the game, with each update they implement game altering bugs, as of the recent Maiasaura update, a bug where the Pterodactylus (small birds) attack fish the moment a Pteranodon picks it up, often resulting in newborn Pt's being absolutely sniped out of the sky or causing them to starve to death. Along with bugs like eating certain plants causes you to have to rejoin the server, being unable to safe-log, which results in you being stuck in a large queue and possibly die to a newborn Beipi. Some of the community is great, some of it isn't. That's just how communities will be.
BUT, there is a serious cheater infestation in the official servers and they have a very small unpaid team (who have jobs and lives outside of the game) that handle it, you don't get the 5+ hours of your life that you spent growing a dino back, as they aren't allowed to give you it back, even if you have solid undeniable evidence. 9/10 of the administrators seem to make little to no effort to engage with reports, and by the time they get around to doing anything about it, the cheaters have murdered half of the server and gone to bed.
With all of that said, I do not recommend the game in it's current state of cheater management.
