All The Players, Clubs and Competitions
The game is based around a painstakingly compiled database of over 40,000 players, including every player to have played a League match and over a thousand who didn’t, including all the top foreign superstars.
Choose from over 130 teams across 110 years including short-lived clubs such as New Brighton Tower, Loughborough and Nelson, or save Barrow, Northwich Victoria and Gateshead from non-league oblivion. In total there is over 8,000 options as to when and with whom to start your career.
All the senior competitions, from the bread-and-butter of the Third Division North, to the glamour of the old European Cup, to short-lived affairs such as the Watney or Anglo-Scottish cups, are modelled as closely to real-life as possible. In addition, reserve leagues operate alongside to keep your young or fringe players match-fit.
To double the sense of nostalgia we have strived to capture the look and feel of great management games of the past. Retro Football Boss has been designed to be simple enough to play in short bursts or on the move, but with enough underlying depth and attention to detail to keep you entertained for hours if you so wish.
Evolution
Financials including gate receipts, wages, transfer fees and running costs have been modelled to be as close to real life as possible. The parameters have been tweaked and the results compared against actual club accounts as far back as 1910. You will go from paying players £2 a week (£1 in the summer!) in 1888 to £4,000+ a week in 1992. The game also features rules such as the maximum/minimum wage and the 'retain and transfer' system, replaced later by transfer tribunals.
Tactics and player positions have also been modelled to evolve through time. Until the mid 1960s, you’ll be dealing with wing-halves and inside-forwards rather than wing-backs or false nines, and employing five-man forward lines rather than a lone striker and two holding midfielders.
Fog Of War
With the benefit of hindsight, we know who the best and worst players throughout history were. We know that Robbie Fowler developed into a world-class striker and that Lee Fowler did not. To balance that out the game employs a fog-of-war scouting system, meaning that you must scout players to reveal their true potential and convince your board to release the necessary funds. This information from your scouts is not perfect though so watch out!
Unique Tactical Feedback
Your coaching staff will give you feedback on the strength of your side in six key tactical areas. This allows you to see immediately the effects of your team selections and tactical changes and develop a clear game plan. Of course, like your scouts the coaching staff are not perfect and their feedback will not always be 100% accurate.

nice
I don't expect much for a fiver but the very least should be a game that doesn't crash 10 times in 10 hours. The detail of the teams is great and the various formations you can create is as good as FM but the action is all moving bars and text. Bottom line it's a good reference to the players at a particular team on a particular season from 1888 - 1988 but not as a game you can actually play, shame really.
Developer seems to have lost interest - great concept; decent execution
The fact that this was an 'Early Access' game back in 2016 and now SEVEN years later is STILL an 'Early Access' game tells you all you need to know. Great premise, could have been great but... an unplayable crashfest clearly long since abandoned by pathetic excuse of a developer. Steam are also to blame for continuing to con people out of money by continuing to flog this dead horse. For shame.
Yes because of the retro CM feel but no because of the crashes - If you can put up with saving the game every 2 minutes then you're ok.
What a shame. A game that has sadly been abandoned by the developer that had potential to be a fascinating insight into the early years of English football that would allow you to change the course of history.
After starting a game in the first season as Aston Villa, I managed to get through about seven seasons before a major bug struck and would not allow me to progress. The game is absolutely riddled with bugs and menu glitches.
The match engine, if you want to call it that, is very reminiscent of Championship Manager 01/02, whilst the transfers took me back to the transfers sequence on Championship Manager '93 on the Amiga.
The game is full of the stars of yesteryear, depending where you start. From Steve Bloomer, Dixie Dean, Tommy Lawton, Stan Matthews, Bobby Charlton, George Best, Rodney Marsh, Ricky Villa, Paul Gascoigne, Gary Lineker, David Beckham and even Carlton Palmer!!! They're all here. Gathering the information must have been a real labour of love.
Also it is pretty odd at times when you see minor Non-League teams hammering League teams in pre-season games, also pray your cup game doesn't go to multiple replays as that will play havoc with the FA Cup and eventually bug out. Another opportunity missed is the inclusion of international football. Imagine trying to defend the World Cup with England in 1970, or winning the World Cup with Scotland in 1974.
One thing that did sadden me, was that although it did mention the Munich Air Crash of 1958, the players remained part of the squad. Whilst I could be seen to add a dimension of 'What if?' about it, if they were to remain in the game, then do not mention the crash.
It is quite good fun trawling through the different squads in different seasons and finding the famous players before they came stars, but it does get a little tedious.
For £8.99 its hardly going to break the bank, its ok to play a season or two, but you're forever on tenterhooks waiting for the game to bug out. If you really want this game get it in a sale, normally around a fiver. And get it soon because according to one post on the 'Discussions' page the developer has asked Steam to remove it from sale. The game was also at one appoint available on Apple Store, but has since been taken down.
If a games studio picked this up, say someone like Sports Interactive, they could make a classic. After all they did tease us once upon a time!
A missed oportunity
3/10
If it worked, could easily be a 7 or 8
Please Please Please update this game. I love it it has so much potential. But it seems as tho the developers have forgetten about it
Don’t waste your time on this game. For football fans yearning for days gone by, this game promises much, yet only manages to deliver frustration and disappointment.
First of all let me say that this game is early access but it is two years on from release. I wouldn’t expect the game breaking bugs I’m now going to detail to still be a problem but they are.
Sometimes, after playing a full season and looking forward to developing the team you’ve spent a full season putting together, the game will crash on starting the following season. The crash will be saved into your game so no amount of reloading will ever let you continue on into the new season. I started again with the same team in the same year and a week of real time later the same thing happened again.
After a few days away, I talked myself into trying again with a different team in a different year. I managed to get through into a second season, even a third and despite the numerous inaccuracies and glitches, which I’ll come to presently, I was enjoying the game. One particular inaccuracy lead me to start another game, the same as this present game just to check out some of the starting stats. This done I deleted the test game in the manner detailed in the manual. Hey presto! Both games disappeared and with them three seasons and around three weeks of real time.
Ok, onto inaccuracies and glitches, many of which I would have put up with if the game had a stable way to save weeks of play.
1. Yellow cards issued before they were introduced.
2. Suspensions imposed before they were introduced.
3. Commentary mentions “Cruyff like move” before Johan Cruyff was born.
4. Early commentary doesn’t really fit with early football, the terms used paint pictures of modern football.
5. Transfer and retain transfer system isn’t modelled correctly. If you don’t agree with player demands at the end of the season they leave on a free transfer. This wasn't how it worked for the vast majority of the time period covered.
6. You’ll have a full backroom staff to manage and finance in the early days of football, despite the reality that most teams only had a manager and a trainer back then.
7. The finance panel on the main screen doesn’t tally with the finance screen. In particular “starting cash” which the manual says is the amount the club starts the season with, but then this total changes each week during the season in an unfathomable way. This leaves you wondering why the club finances are spiralling into debt and suspicious that it is affecting your player budget.
8. Injured players stay on the pitch and continue to contribute to the game. This isn’t a problem once substitutions are introduced but they weren’t introduced into the Football League until 1965.
9. A player taking a corner or free kick regularly pops up in the box to receive his own cross.
10. Commentary concerning penalties can be a little confusing at times.
11. The interface can be fiddly and garbled in places. Some of the info you need is not readily accessible and can entail a lot of clicking that could have been avoided if the interface was more intuitive.
12. Modern day comments and anecdotes used on the load screen which are outside the timeline of the game.
13. A lot of good things missed that could have added a lot to the feel to the game, without adding anymore to processing.
Now add to all this the fact that the developer hasn’t been seen anywhere near the web site since April 2019 (2 months at the time of writing) and that his last update mentioned he was working on adding foreign leagues, really? With so much to fix? and you have a game that is broken and unsupported.
The idea is a good one and will appeal to anyone who has fond memories of football before it was ruined by big money, but the implementation ruins a good idea and I can’t even credit the developer with the idea because I myself had notions of this game back in the 80s and I’m sure I wasn’t the only one.
I hope that one day we will get a great game that gives us a taste of football past but this game isn’t it now and I don’t believe the will exists to make it so in the future.
The idea for the game is fantastic and reminds me of the early Championship Manager games . You can hunt down young players before they are famous, scout them and change history.
A little dissapointed that the game continues to crash on me and I have only managed a few games into my first season. Started another game and got a little further but it doesnt run smootly.
If this issue is resolved i dont see why anybody who enjoys football management games wouldnt be interested in this.
I can recommed the game as others may not have the same issues as myself. Its an early access game so dont expect the finished article.
I recommend this game. 7/10 is my review. At first I wasn't impressed, the game crashed at first friendly game, but with time and perseverance, I'm thinking that the game converted me. Maybe I'm a nostalgic young boy that likes ancient times, I love History! Inside and outside of sports. Maybe I'm a person that thinks that database and immersion is more important than last generation graphics. Maybe I'm a strange guy with strange hobbies. All of this may be True! But anyway I'm waiting with anxiety for RFB2. And without any regret!
Have waited for a game like this to come out, to control from a retro era to current date, unfortnately I never got through to a second season because game crashes. Based on the old Championship Manager format, but very low processing.
But this game has great potential, what if it could be converted to the Football Manager format and even better what if it could even replicate older Football Stadia, maybe I'm getting carrried away!!
Would certainly be interested in buying again if this game is updated and at least playable without bugs.
Loved the concept of this game and much work had obviously been put into it, but the developer seems to have lost interest in its progress.
Its like going back into the old Champ Manager days, but with the additional delights of being able to go back into the history of your favourite club.
It always seemed to be a challenge, and the lack of recent updates seems to suggest that the developer has realised this as well.
Shame.
I like the idea and some of the features, but all in all this is a bad game, crashes, bugs, bad UI... needs a lot of work to get to justify 11e price tag.
I cannot recommend this just yet...But it could be the best footy management sim ever...
Keeping it simple is the key. None of those ridiculous press interviews or player tantrums, just pure swift management.
But being Early Access it is at present, incredibly flaky & crashes constantly.
I am sure this will be addressed shortly & i shall return with haste to edit this review & recommend it wholeheartedly.
Really looking forward to this one.....
The concept is superb...The execution isn't there yet....Waiting.....Hoping.....
Great start to a game full of potential. This is the distant cousin of two great text sims, the original Championship Manager and OOTP Baseball. Using a historical database to recreate seasons from 1888 to 1998 this game creates endless challenges. Want to know what it is like to have a team with Best, Law and Charlton? Or extend Liverpool's 70's, 80's heydey into the 90's? It's all here.
Yes there are bugbears, (User interface, scouting) which over time will improve but stick with it. I remember CM and OOTP started slowly and they are giants now.
Immerse yourself, when I took over Leeds Utd in 1980, I could almost smell the beer on my players breaths as they trotted out of the tunnel, I could smell the linament on the creaky knees of Revie's old boys, Paul Madeley and Trevor Cherry and enjoyed the skills of Brian Flynn and Arthur Graham.
Good start, lots of detail and scope to change and improve!
Certainly no positive recommendation for this game, given that fact that the price is set at 11 EUR or something. Extremly long loading cycles, font barely readable, hardly no options in terms of match display, training, management and in-game coaching. All changes seem to have no effect on the match. Furthermore, I have come across several serious bugs during the matches. For instance, a player that has been sent off could be substituted for another one off the bench. Hi-la-ri-ous.
The only thing that makes this game at least a little bit charming is the (apparently, did not check) comprehensive database of historic clubs and players. In general, however, there are plenty of flash game soccer managers on the internet that do a way better job than this one.
This is difficult, I can't reccommend this game at the moment. But would certainly recommend following this game and see how things go as it has so much potential and will probably end up being a really great football management game in time.
I've managed to play at most around of a quarter of an hour of the game in a single session before it has crashed, and this has happened every time I have tried to play it no matter how often I have uninstalled and re-installed, tried checking the files for erros and contacted the dev's on the forums and they have responded but the problems still persist which is annoying especially as this is one of the first time I have experienced a problem like this with a game.
There are however many positives about the game, it is currently in Early Access so the performance will be improved and new features will be added, and the dev's are always on the forums answering questions and they do their best to squash bugs and improve the game, and you want this game to be successful for them as they put so much work (and research) into it and it has so much potential just need to fix a couple of things.
A lot of potential, and as football fan with a big soft spot for nostalgia, I love the concept. However, whilst there is a lot to like about the game, there are also a number of issues at the moment, and as such it is hard to recommend until these have been addressed. Of course, this is still in early access, and I have high hopes I will be able to write a more positive review at a later date :) But for now, this is how I see it:
Pros:
* All those seasons, so much choice :)
* Nice representation of player skills
* Simple and quick to pick up
* Nostalgia for the older CM games, but with new ideas as well
Cons:
* Interface can be very slow when switching screens
* Not much feedback in terms of what is going well/wrong in a game
* Not so many tactical options - probably a design choice, keeping it a quicker simpler game. But would still be nice to change set piece takers, have more control over passing options, etc.
* Game has crashed for me, more than once
* Some interface glitches - for example, I once had a return button stuck on screen, blocking other buttons, and leaving me stuck with no option but to kill the process
* Lots of teams for lots of years - but player positions and stats are not always as I remember them
* Transfer / scouting options limited at this time
All in all it has potential to be a good, quick to play football manager game, and one perfect for fans who like to drift their minds back to the "good old days" (whenever they may be). But still a bit of work to be done, particularly in terms of performance and stability. But again, early days, so I hope it will live up to it's potential!
I have to say i have enjoyed this game so much. Being a big fan of the championship manager to football manager series i like how much control i have over the ream so was skeptical about this. But the fact i can play as my hometown Wolves from the beginning of the game and just have so much fun with them was amazing. I am grateful the developer is on top of the game and providing regular updates to this as it really does deserve it. A must buy for me for gamers who like football management games as its easy to pick up and easy to play that doesnt require so much attention you cant also get on with other things.
9/10 would definately reccomend to friends.
have tried this game but unfortunately is no t nearly ready could be a very good game when completed but very buggy at the moment
Full disclosure, I've been playing RFB since the very, very early beta stages as part of a community (COYP!), but I was anxiously waiting for the release to hit Steam so I could throw money at it.
Why?
Put simply, because it's the opportunity to rewrite history. Correct the terrible things that went wrong in the past. That cup final that was simply your destiny? You get a chance to win that match all over again. That player that became your first real idol (who was pretty rubbish in retrospect, but who cares) - you get to lead him to glory. That striker that your club sold, who if you were in charge would have been chained up in the training ground, well, sorry buddy, you don't get your dream move I'm afraid.
The amount of work and detail that's gone into this game is incredible - it should be said that this is an early iteration, the first steps if you will, but if this is the start, I genuinely cannot wait until the bugs are ironed out and the final product is polished.
In terms of gameplay, it's simple. It's not FM16, with a myriad of different things you need to tweak or adjust. It's pure, pick up and play management. Go for the players you want, get them on the pitch, hope for the best, in the truest, classic CM93/94 style. No frills, no fancy animations, just history being corrected (if you're any good!).
It's very single player - as yet, you can only manage one club in game (so, no selling players to 'friendly' clubs for inflated fees - boo, hiss), the transfer system as regards foreign players needs (in my opinion), a bit of a revamp, and there are a few glitches here and there. I will say that, having seen the game develop from an idea into reality, I trust 1888 to get all of these things sorted in a smart time scale.
Genuinely, I've spent hours playing this during development and again since purchasing on Steam. For the price of a pub lunch, if you have any interest at all in football (proper football, jumpers for goalposts that is, not prawn sandwiches and £100m transfers), you need to have this game in your library.
