This is a fantastic game. I never got to play it as a kid, but the enjoyment and nostalgia for this era of games are really something. The combat mechanics are great; it really feels like a Hollywood action movie. The story is engaging and makes you want to keep coming back and playing day after day.
I recommend anyone play this game. I completed it on Hard, and it was challenging at times but great fun.
Definitely a blast playing, the last stand mechanic is a fun one since if you just blast your gun while in it you surely die. Love the monologues Max does thru the entire game
i love how my game crashes 10 seconds into the first cutscene of the game
Great game with a great story
Its the best game multiplayer ive ever played..
Short but sweet. Perhaps not one of Rockstar's classics, it is nevertheless a fun, action paced, adventure shooter that has a decent story, solid writing, a good lead performance from the late James McCaffrey, and a stellar soundtrack. Pick it up if you have a Rockstar itch or you just like good games. 8/10
This is my 3rd time playing this game within 2 years. A fantastic end to Max's story-line with a new take on the character that still feels like a natural progression of his character from 1 and 2. Best game play of the series by far. Crazy that rockstar did not use this game play in any other game. James McCaffrey (RIP) gives his best performance of Max Payne. The story is really great and found it took Max to an interesting part of his life. The music is amazing as well. HEALTH does a great job of making the soundtrack new but familiar. This is one of the greatest games of all time and I could talk about it forever. 10/10
I enjoyed the game! Cool graphics but you cant roam but still love it
got a bad rap when it came out, i think it was a fresh turn story wise and gave us a incredible showing of the euphoria ragdoll engine. 9/10 would always recommend
Cinematics make me dizzy. Gameplay is alright, and was probably pretty cutting edge for its time but this game is hard to play nowadays. Or maybe i'm just depressed lol.
This game still holds up today. I played it on PS3 and had fun but I'm having a blast on PC. Definitely worth it, especially on sale.
the best 3rd person shooter with great story and mechanics
It is short (sadly), yet barely forgettable. Far less dark than previous Max Payne's, though?
This might be one of the best 3rd person shooters ever created. It's in my top 5 for sure. This game serves as a play demo for GTA V and perfectly showcases the capabilities of Rockstar's amazing RAGE engine.
It finishes Payne's story and finally puts the cop's bitterness, agony and regret to rest. Max is truly one of gaming's biggest sigmas :0
All jokes aside, the third installment is so much different than Remedy's first two games (which are cult classics btw!) but it's a very welcoming change to the franchise. And omg the weapons... they feel amazing, pack hell of a punch and are a gun nut's wet dream.
The whole trilogy is a must play awesome experience. Story, movement and combat are the key elements that define the Max Payne saga. Ignore the haters (like can you even be taken seriously if you don't like these games?), install a mod that allows you to skip every cutscene this game has to offer, lock in and start popping heads!
Solid 9.5/10 + Old Rockstar common W.
Imagine if the whole trilogy would get a remake (not remaster) built on RDR II and GTA VI's new RAGE engine. But that's just sci-fi, R* is way too greedy and lazy to do this nowadays and Payne's cult following is too small. Hopefully tho, who knows...
Actually, it was pretty damn good. I really enjoyed it. James McCaffrey was an incredible voice actor. Rest in peace.
This game wasn't horrible, but overall, I didn't really like it. Somehow, the detective-noir style felt overdone in this game vs. the others. And when dealing with a style that is supposed to be overdone as a baseline, imagine how it must feel to say that they overdid the overdone-ness.
The narration of events is constant, never really giving the game a chance to show the player what is going on, because Max is always telling it. There are also multiple cut-scene triggers when moving from one checkpoint to another which breaks up the flow. It got very annoying to be suddenly dumped into a daring shoot-out after a cut-scene, and getting killed almost immediately because instead of slowly walking through the door, rifle at the ready, I was now just standing in the open, pistol held down at my side.
Which brings up another annoyance: almost every time a cut-scene triggered while holding a 2-handed weapon, the cut-scene would end with Max holding a one-handed weapon, and I would have to switch back to the 2-handed to continue. Sometimes, a cut-scene would cause Max to simply drop the 2-handed weapon as he moved into a new area, without a reason.
The bullet time is still just as fun as it ever was, and there are few feelings in a game that match the feeling of diving off a ledge in slow-motion, floating through the air for 8-10 seconds, and blasting every enemy in view before hitting the ground. An experience to match the best 2000's Hollywood Wire-Fighting sequence.
My other biggest complaint is that there are times Max is just, well...stupid. (Minor Spoiler to follow) In once instance, Max is trying to locate some hostages. As he (we) make our way thorough the current "Big-Bad's Compound," we locate the hostages in a room with about 5 - 7 armed guards. Instead of shooting through the window, or even just diving through it, Max *barges through the door and demands everyone drop their guns!* He is subsequently disarmed, one of the hostages is shot, and the big-bad escapes. Max then has to continue chasing after the big-bad. This is a level of bad decision making that belongs more in a B-Rated Horror movie, not an pulse-pounding action game.
There are also collectibles to find on each level, but on some levels, if you take too long looking around, events unfold in a way that make you fail the mission, and have to reload. Why give us the opportunity (and incentive) to explore if we are going to be punished for it?
One final complaint: it is clear this game was made during that time when studios were trying to make shooters "more realistic," because Max can only carry 2 pistol-like guns (or anything else 1-handed), and 1 2-handed gun. And the 2-handed gun can't really be "stored," but merely held down by his side in his left hand.
Like I said, the game isn't awful, but looking back on the 9-hours to complete the story, I'm glad I picked this game up on sale.
Absolutely fantastic game, liked where they went with this series after 2. Nice to see a difference from the dark snowy alleys of 1 and 2, but I think it leans a little too much on the grime. Makes it very hard to look at most of the time. Must buy for people who like shooters.
the amount of pure AURA this man has while jumping down a staircase in slowmo and gunning down a squad of gangsters in a split second with akimbo pistols all while listening to this absolute BANGER of a soundtrack, makes me wanna become addicted to painkillers too.
Good game, nice effects, great graphics and gameplay is pretty engaging.
Gunplay is top notch, one of the best TPS; it baffles me that Rockstar didn't incorporate this system into GTA or RDR. Writing is pretty good too, I really like this blend of classic rockstar style and Max Payne style.
Max Payne 3 was a really interesting game to experience for me, having originally heard about it through Jacob Geller's youtube essay about ugly games and later listening to a more in depth discussion on his podcast Something Rotten. Thematically both ugly and rotten really make a lot of sense here especially picking up on Rockstar's sort of tone for the main story beats. As far as gameplay goes Max has a very strong sense of physicality in the way he interacts with the environment, thudding against obstacles during a poorly aimed dodge will quickly get you shot but conversely you can dive to the ground and stay down however long you want if you think you can get away with shooting prone to minimize your exposure. The slow motion being the highlight of the shooting feels good once you get in the rhythm for it and kill cams on the final enemy often transition straight into the next segment of cutscene which is very smooth. I felt initially that the visual style didn't super land but it grew on me throughout the course of the playthrough, as did the constant noir monologuing. Solid game overall, not sure if I'd come back for more but I don't regret the time I spent here by any means
More combat and cover options than the first two. But you can absolutely run n gun if you want to.
A Masterpiece of a Series!!
These games are beautifully done in my opinion on the fact that this was something different during the time of the development on the first one, back during the Play Station 2 Era. Where this game was first came out on. These are something of a classic. When they first released this they implemented the "Diving slow motion" effect when you are mid combat and feel like John wick in today's age. These are based on a main charecter that is a New York City cop ironically named "max" (and no not Mad Max). Where you are taking the streets set on finding the person(s) that took you wife and child away from you, seeking revenge and justice on who did this to you. Along the way you are faced with past trauma and enemies that stand in you way to find the perpatratures. Even thought that the first one is VERY dated during the time it was and is still something awesome. The game play is about 10-12 hours. Depending if you are doing a speed run. Now the graphic settings on the first one is a bit "different" because of how many frames you are going to get with the systems being newer in today's age. I recommend putting a frame limit on it most definitely.
In my opinion these are something that thought and time was put into these games, not only on the story but on the movement and the action during the game as well. I recommend waiting for a sale ONLY for the fact of how long that these games have been out. If they were newer I would recommend a full buy on these guys. An absolute blast playing these the whole way through and still come back to them from time to time.
Fucking great game. Even though i'm huge on the grittiness of the first two games, Max Payne 3 is one of the greatest games I've ever played. The story is pretty good and the setting being in San Palo is nice, but the best things about this game are the gunplay and voice acting. Everyone complains that you need the Rockstar launcher to play this game (Which you do), but it's really not a huge problem. If you haven't already, PLAY THIS GAME.
TLDR: 10 minutes of videos you can't skip, and then two minutes of gameplay. Rinse then repeat. Not worth $20, maybe $10.
Okay maybe that description is a bit of an exaggerating, but I literally left and cooked dinner before the game loaded. Not running a potatoe PC.
It does have great graphics, one liners, but those lonnnnngggggg videos really ruin the mood.
Normally I write several paragraphs on my review but here it really isn't necessary I think.
Great gameplay, great story, non-existent online unless you can group up with some friends, and some epic challenge modes that will keep you replaying the game for many hours to come. As you can see by my 86 hours at time of review, I've definitely eclipsed the "$1 per hour" rule. Get this game! Get MP1 and MP2 while you're at it. They're all classics. If R* still worked with other devs on games like MP and LA Noire, gaming would certainly be in a better place today.
This is phenomenal, the presentation, the gameplay.. all of it makes me wish Rockstar would come back to making linear games like these.
This game deserves more than its reputation. The gunplay is possibly Rockstar's finest, the story is well-written despite the odd convenience, and the graphics hold up extremely well for a decade+ old game. There were a couple bugs with the camera and QTEs, but nothing major. Only real criticisms I have are story presentation and collectibles. The weird words on screen when characters say them really adds nothing and distracts from somber/quiet moments, and the neon lens flares are a bit much at times. The collectibles are fine, they're easy enough to miss, and the gold camo looks cool. That said, they're the only thing that could really prompt replayability, and the rewards aren't enough to justify it. A few extra lines of dialogue and a camo for each gun isn't quite enough to justify another 12 hours. I know it's thrown around a lot these days, but this game is a perfect example of a 7/10.
very fun game with great gameplay and and a good story that exceptionally wraps up the story.
The game holds up way better in 2024 than you could ever expect. The graphics are still great. They don't look like it on the reviews as much, but you gotta play to notice the difference.
IT IS A MUST PLAY GAME. I NEEDED TO SAY THAT!
This is an excellent game, a worthy successor to Max Payne 1 & 2!
At first I was put off by the incessant interruptions by cut scenes. The intuitive feel of the game play made me push through, and all of a sudden I was enjoying the story, and the cut scenes. Be warned, this game takes your control away often, and sometimes very abruptly. The most infuriating thing was, when you just selected an assault rifle for example, and the next moment the game decides, that after the following cut scene you should be better off using a pistol etc.
I had minor annoyances like that, but overall the game gripped me from start to finish. Having played the previous Max Payne games when they were new, the Brazilian setting of MP3 felt a little off at first. But trust me, it gets darker, and deeper as you go along.
I enjoyed the story, which the game emphasizes heavily but it's the fluid gun action, that takes the cake. The environments, and set pieces are great backdrops to gun down bad guys in. The variety of guns is decent, and most, if not all of them feel good to use.
Graphically the game looks really good, considering it's age. Music in this game is used sparingly but in just the right places to heighten the suspense, not to distract the player. And when the theme track hits in the latter part of the game, it feels really appropriate.
Get it, if you enjoyed MP 1&2, and even if you never played them but like a good 3rd person action game, with a good revenge story.
Don't get me wrong the game is fantastic. But the fact tat there is absolutely no audio whatsoever in game and only in cutscenes is a bit ridiculous and for me at least makes it unplayable. It did fine for the first 2 missions and then broke itself. I have been trying to play the game as is but at this point I do not think I can do it. You kind of need audio to know where some enemies are and without audio it makes it incredibly annoying to die to people you should've heard and been able to react to. None of the audio fixes I have looked up have worked, so I will chalk my experience up to bad luck
I've finished the game multiple times, great story, genuine fun gameplay that feels true to the series. If you liked the first 2 don't hesitate to play this
I have now completed the story in this game and honestly.... I like it. I understand why people always recommend max payne 3.
But there was one thing that bothered me throughout the entire game. WHY THE FUCK IS THE MC SO PATHETIC. THIS GUY IS MAKING DUMB DECISIONS AND NEVER REALIZES NOR LEARN FROM HIS MISTAKES.
ok, im done ranting, good game.
I've had this game for a little while now, but only just played it for the first time. The story has a slightly different different vibe to the 1st and 2nd instalment, but abosutely it doesn't disappoint!!! I played it in 2k and loved it. Only things I could get at were the unskippable scenes (or maybe I didn't know how to skip them!). As a Max Payne fan, solid 8/10. Would recommend
Just played it again recently. Max Payne series is one of the best games I have ever played. The shooting feels great. Bullet time design is very creative, just like the slow motion in the movie. The story is also exciting, with many big scenes. Although Rockstar did not completely inherit Remady's style, the overall game style is completely different from the first two games, it can be seen that Rockstar is still very attentive. At least they finally gave Max a rest. This painful man has experienced too much. I hope more people can find and play this game. I hardly see anyone playing online mode…
Oh right, I heard that Max Payne 1 and 2 are being remade. Can’t wait! This IP is really amazing
gritty compelling story with great game play
This game stands out at me as not only a great bullettime/quickdraw action adventure, I also really like the styling and story telling this game has. As cheap as it it these days, MAX PAYNE 3, you cant go far wrong.
4/5
Never had so much fun playing as Walter White doing gun-fu in Brazil. 9/10.
It's hard to start this game right after playing previous Max Payne games, as the feel is completely different. Brazilian slums, night clubs, football stadiums... all fine, but it's not what I have thought a max payne game should have.
Story wise it is fine. It is a bit too simple, but as an "action movie wanna be", this works. Maybe some times it goes over the top, which again does not feel like max payne game, but I enjoyed it.
That being said, this is a really good game. Gameplay is fantastic. Bullet time, cover system, gunplay. All feel great. Grinds make you want to play over again. Golden guns are a nice touch.
Overall a good game, not so much a max payne sequel.
Pills. Bullets. Time.
You're a man who's run out of all 3 and on a downward spiral, I first played this on the Xbox 360 as a twin disc physical game and it became my fourth favorite Rockstar game ( RDR2, GTA IV, RDR, This) soley because of the vibes. The gun play and everything else is a nice touch. A brutal sun stroke induced haze sets over you, the screen warps and shakes, probably the years of abusing alcohol and pain medication, maybe it's caught up to you before the hundreds of people who want you dead, funny. Max Payne 3 is a perfect sendoff and sequel to 1 and 2, shoot dodging is heavily improved upon feeling the most fluid it ever has, the levels of environmental destruction here make it feel like prime action movie. If I had one complaint which, not really an issue here is that it's maybe too fun, when playing Kane and Lynch 2 I realized that it's far easier in that game to revel in the horrific carnage and wanton destruction, mostly due to the dogshit game play, your guns are horribly inaccurate, your screen shakes violently as you play, loud enough sounds blow out and destroy your camera man's speakers and all you have to do is go from cover to cover and shoot, it's a cover shooter, that's all it is. Overall though Max Payne 3 is a perfectly enjoyable game with plenty to offer still today, 20 is a fair price but you should probably wait for a sale and maybe snag all 3.
This is just a straight up great game that comes from a time where video games didnt have an ideology to shove down your throat. Just good old fashioned fun.
Riddled with signupware and junk that it wanted to install.
have already played years ago and wanted to replay but it was updated this year - 2024 - with the garbage.
will just play without the rockstar rubbish with appropriate backup. rockstar changed the terms after sale and i didnt agree to them, so f%$k'em
I do recommend this game purely for the fun shoot em' up gameplay and fast action. BUT if youre a huge Max Payne fan, like myself, you are probably going to be disappointed with the story and direction Rockstar decided to take Max after Sam Lake (games designer and writer) and REMEDY Entertainment stepped away from the series. Dan Hauser does an OK imitation of the style Sam Lake had established, but misses the mark when it comes to crafting a story and presentation that feels truly "Cop Noir" like the previous 2 games.
The focus now is on making it as action packed as possible, sometimes at the cost of good story telling. It doesnt feel like the ending of a trilogy that followed the same character, it feels like a completely different version of Max. Outside of a few flashbacks in New York and brief mentions of characters such as Mona or his Wife and Daughter, this is a borderline reboot of the series in how different the game is from the original 2 both presentation wise, with its massive action set pieces, lack of gritty comic book style noir dialogue - instead replaced by weird Tony Scott style editing and frantic camera cuts, and objectively worse written dialogue. It feels WAY closer to a Grand Theft Auto spin off, than a sequel to Max Payne 2 in that regard, and that is due to the design style change from Sam Lake to Dan Hauser and Rockstar Team.
TLDR; Its a fun great game, but maybe a bad sequel to Max Payne 2 - - - 3.5/5 its worth playing
Game crashes over and over and over. I don't have any issues playing newer games. Just this one.
My god does this game like to hear itself talk. A movie interspersed with occasional gameplay sequences that sometimes consist of literally walking 5 seconds from door to door to trigger the next cutscene. Absolutely the peak of treating players like a passive movie audience, way worse than some of Call Of Duty's craziest excesses. It's a game, let me play it. And maybe shut up for just a second, especially with writing that isn't near as clever or cOoL as it thinks it is. The gameplay WAS fun, whenever it happened, the checkpoint placement was at times randomly punishing and the level design had some great highlights (favela level) but also some real stinkers (airport).
Genuinely orgasmic. One of the most fun of this type of cinematic third person shooter, the bullet time is so good. The story, while nothing too insane, worked well and Max himself was awesome. Final segment goes so hard. Play this game.
games alright, story and cutscenes really drag on, gameplay is amazing but gets stale eventually, thats about all i have to say
Game = 10/10
Rockstar Launcher = 0/10
Average Experience with the Game = 5/10
Amazing Bullet Time mechanic and Story. It don't overstay its welcome. 10/10 👍
