AWESOME awesome awesome game. Very different from the first two games, which i loved, but this was on a totally different level. Im in the early stages of backlog gaming and this game so far is leading my GOY for 2025. Just so much fun. Looks great. Plays great. Story is dark and brutal. The gun play is a blast. Fingers crossed one day for a Max Payne 4.
This is one of the greatest games I like the character Max Payne he is a person that fights out his enemies with true heroism. but Max is a real man who saves others lives without thinking about his own life. Max Payne is the character of trust and courage he is a real man he has got combat moves that makes him the real protagonist of the game . His words make me realize everything. Decided to play through all the Max Payne games, finally got to this one. I see why fans were divided with this one. It’s a completely different tone from the first two, trading in the gritty Noir setting with a more dark, vulgar, and over the top action one. Max is not the once dead inside but born again man he was at the end of 2, but someone who is still grieving the loss of his family with as many vices he can find, and constantly wallowing in self pity and hatred. Despite the changes tho, this was still a fun game and James McCaffery (R.I.P.) still does a superb job in the role like before. I like that they used his likeness for Max’s final crusade against the wicked.
The gunplay in this is very satisfying, riddling guys with bullets and occasionally having it slow down as you do it, running up to guys to steal their guns and shoot them with it. I wish the main campaign gave you grenades to use but outside of that it’s still fun.
If you can get past the change in direction, it’s a solid game and a nice send off to Max.
Review
I have played the original games. So, its quite a surprise that after such a long time that rockstar had announced a third game in the Max Payne franchise where the main protagonist suddenly becomes bald and its set in South America. That is an absolutely radical move against the identity of the originals and is usually just a sign for disappointment.
Gameplay
Its hard to find a game that took the franchises gameplay and improved it in every aspect in a sequel. Not only can you dodge in every direction, but also stay and move a lot on the ground. Bullet time is a bit overpowered as you can use it any time during dodging, although standing up takes a while which makes positioning one of the most important parts of the game, aside fast reaction time and going for headshots.
Due to the way the dodges and bullet times are included, the gameplay not only is fun but also in itself a cinematic experience. The biggest drawback of the game, which actually can be so annoying that it can kill the replay value is the lack of a proper skip button for cutscenes. There are mods to fix this although not being ideal. Otherwise, the replay value is high for special modes, time attack, high scores, challenges and so on and so forth.
The games levels very a lot, with multiple different interesting set pieces that also add to the gameplay or change it up. Even something like shooting outside of a vehicle never gets stale due to different set pieces and context it provides.
Your character can die easily but so can enemies. My biggest criticism of the previous games was that you could die in a second from full health. Here you don’t have to spam quicksave because the health system works much better. You can find painkillers which regenerate your health. Alternatively, if you don’t use it and have no health left, your character will drop to the ground and you can shoot the person who downed you. If you accomplish this, your character will stand up with half hp left.
Luckily the dream sequences in the previous game are gone. I never liked those much.
There is even a multiplayer mode which has made slow motion work in a pvp setting. Although there aren’t many playing anymore and its balancing is questionable, it can increase playtime.
Story
A more complex story although being not that personal. This causes the stakes to be not that interesting. The biggest twist for me was that the buildup to being betrayed came by a different person that you neither remember much after discovering it nor care about due to this. The story is eventful although less about the main stories plot but rather through the perspective and experiences from the main character. I’m still impressed on the very witty and sometimes stupid on purpose writing coupled with the ironic main character who takes a job in a Brazil while never bothering to learn any Portuguese whatsoever.
Sound
A variety of unique and distinctive tracks with combat sound effects that adds to a unique memorable experience. Every level has a distinct track which gives it a completely different feel than the level already provides. I specially like the voice acting from the protagonist as its better than it ever was.
Graphics
Its incredible how much quality you can get in a game when you have a studio with an enormous budget and the focus on a single player experience. The game came out over 10 years ago and the graphics are so good it could have been a few years ago. Everything can be thorn to pieces, especially environments but bullets have an impact on enemies too, although not being to the point that you can shoots of limbs and have gore.
Conclusion/TL;DR
One of the best single player third person action shooters. It provides a decent story, different set piece after set piece in its level structure, satisfying gunplay with a bullet time feature that stands out and is well implemented into the gameplay. A third instalment into a franchise that does almost everything better while also staying true to its identity even while making moves that would make it seem that it did the opposite. This is a true sequel that almost makes you feel like Max Payne.

I played the first Max Payne while staying over at a friends house when I was 14-15. My friend was doing something so I was in his room alone playing through the game. I was totally absorbed by the story and narration, and the gameplay was solid. When my friend finally finished and came into the room, he watched for a few minutes and asked: "Why aren't you using the bullet time?"
What? What bullet time? He took the controller and proceeded to dive around a corner in slow motion a la Neo from the Matrix and shoot down several assailants. My jaw dropped. WTF. I was missing an integral part of the game and still enjoying myself.
Max Payne 3 is great. I see some people saying the story was underwhelming, and I disagree with that, although it's nearly impossible to match the weight and impact of the story in the first Max Payne. I skipped the second one and went right to three.
Overall this game is very fun to play. The gameplay is great, the voice acting is good enough, and the story is intriguing enough that I didn't skip a single cut scene. I finished the whole game in about seven hours, but it was 100% worth the sale price I bought it for.
Finally got around to playing this game and i must say, it definitely lives up to my expectations! Max Payne 3 delivers intense gunplay, cinematic storytelling (albeit a little ridiculous at times) and the signature 'bullet time' feature. Brazil makes for an interesting backdrop as a gritty and very foreign environment for the protagonist where he battles both enemies and his past. It does deviate a bit from its more noir-feeling predecessors but in all honesty, the polished action sequences, storyline and immersive atmosphere make it a must if you're into third-person shooters with a movie like flow and action.

I highly recommend Max Payne 3. It's a beautifully crafted game and part of an iconic series that truly deserves a 4th installment. The main character is incredibly charismatic, and as you progress, you'll find yourself thinking like him. It's perfect for anyone looking for a game to enjoy over a few nights. If you can grab it on sale, even better, but it's worth every cent, even at full price.
Yet another game that uses a 3rd party launcher. Warning, if you lose or forget your email attached to this 3rd party launcher, you won't be able to play any of the games associated with it.
The max payne series is one of the most influential shooter games for me. I think that anyone who has played all 3 games can feel the bitterness and pain of max in this one, which comes through superbly. Action-packed scenes, super graphics for the time (still totally enjoyable today!!!). The bullet time is an essential addition in the game. I would really-really welcome a remake of max payne 1 and 2!

Because I played it on an old computer, the R* launcher now thinks I don't own a valid copy of the game - support closed my ticket without a resolution.
Peak company
RockStar Launcher is tied to my childhood email which is has long been deleted. Their support is utterly useless and may be run by a bot that rejects 90% of all tickets. I can't access any RockStar games from Steam, and if you have any old account tied to Steam+RockStar, then neither can you.
AVOID.
Great way to finish the awesome trilogy. Although some may think this game is worse compared to the previous titles, I think it's on par with them, and the gameplay is better than ever. This is Max Payne at its peak. My biggest problems are probably the prerendered cutscenes, NPCs who talk too much when you don't follow them and explore, the removal of grenades and molotovs, and the worst one: Max can't carry more than three weapons without dropping the third one. Other than that, the gameplay is great. The story has its issues here and there, but it's not as bad as people say. Overall, if not the best, it's one of the best third-person shooters ever.

(this section is about business practices, not the game) buy the first two. they hold up very well, though this is a more polished version of much similar gameplay. don't buy this one. they're all great games, i'm just saying. dont ****buy**** this one. if you get what i mean. because the version that you don't "buy" is just objectively better. rockstar launcher is actually such a headache. never had a game on here that needed rockstar launcher, but it's actually deranged that steam allows itself to sell them. i made a whole account for it, logged in, VERIFIED MY EMAIL (which, by the way, seriously? how braindead is a games company where after you buy a game you have to verify your email before playing? who cares??), and then the game didn't load after like, ten minutes. then i restarted it, and when i tried to open the game again it gave me some nonsense about how it couldn't sign me in automatically, which is again annoying. and then i signed in, and i remembered how much i love this game. so i guess it's a mixed bag.
here's the bit about the actual game. i actually love it. i kind of prefer the first two because of how impressive they are for their time, and because the story is objectively better. i love the absurd version of a noir detective, perpetually drunk after losing his family. i love how every woman he meets is doomed, basically because the game's universe knows that he needs that guilt as the motivation to keep acting in his way. this game loses some of that. he carries the guilt, but then they add in this whole white guilt/white savior angle where they're criticizing a totally different type of story. it's set in south america, he works as a mercenary/bodyguard for white people in south america i think, and the people call him out for being white and, to a lesser extent, violent. because obviously every enemy is violent, but most of them aren't white. it's just weird, it's tonedeaf, and it doesn't really make sense of any of the sociology that the game seems to be trying to tackle, because this franchise is an improper venue for it. see, GTA, GTA could make a great game to that end. make a GTA set in Brazil. or Cuba. or anything like that. but it doesn't make sense for this character, whose guilt is supposed to be uniquely personal, and responsibilities personally decided. if this is your first max payne game, you'd think that's just the plot. it isn't. it's usually just a cut and dry rogue cop/revenge story following a man who has experienced "MAXIMUM PAIN" after the death of his family. anyway. this third entry is objectively an update to the gameplay and graphics, and i do love it for that. the gratuitous gore i could do without. this is in the top 3 goriest feeling games i've ever played, the only two that beat it being left 4 dead 2 and robocop rogue city, both of which have actual dismemberment and head explosions. while this game has half a tomato smashed against someone's face, and just adds that texture onto the top of their head constantly. it's a pretty bad effect, but it is gross. just makes me wish that if they were willing to go that far, and let you put like, six tomatoes on someone's head, they'd eventually let the head cave in.
flawed, but easily in the top 3 rockstar games. bully and rdr2 are the only ones that rival it, and they're all in dispute for where they land. rdr2 would probably be third because the online is too grindy and not conducive to actual multiplayer, and the story is mediocre. but the gore is better, and the enemies react to damage better, which are aspects that would have brought this game to number one easily. anyway. that's it. good night and good luck, or whatever.

Started this in 2025 and it's most definitely stood the test of time. I'm 120mins play time into it and can already highly recommend it.

I can't think of anything bad to say about Max Payne 3 and even after finishing, I feel like going back and playing it again for the gameplay and the story. Max Payne 3 did not disappoint.
I would say it was quite a good experience. having replayed it about 3 times, the only problem I see was that at some point the gameplay becomes too repetitive,
- loot dead cops
- advance into the next 'shooting'
- take cover
- fight some armored guys (who weirdly die by shooting their legs and not their helmet?!)
- ending
maybe it's because I didn't have much time playing MP1/2 growing up, therefore am not used to the overall mechanism of the franchise.

I think the ending could be improved a lot more. it was great, but, breaking Victor's leg? what's even the point anyway. either just do some very serious damage to him or let him go.
I absolutely love this game. Played the story a few times on Xbox and am loving it here on PC. The story is great as well as the voice acting and the gameplay is so much fun.
The gameplay is fun and the story is serviceable. However it's just not the same as the other two games and that's fine. However I miss Sam Lake's writing and the goofy comics that were the cutscenes. I feel like Max Payne 3 is missing the charm that the other two games had and it feels like I'm playing GTA 5, except it has a Max Payne skin over it. All in All I had fun just not in the same way.
One can only dream of what this could be under Remedy's direction

i absolutely love the game the gun play is the best ive seen in video games the the cut scenes do get repetitive on multiple play troughs but the game play more then makes up for it i highly recommend the game
All game is just corridor shooter, but you will not feel it. It will never make you bored. All game pass on one breath. I played it first at 2025- graphics is not so old. I would give 9\10 to this game
This one of the first games I bought after getting my PC. Got it because of Rabbit Respawn vids. Glad it lived up to my expectations. Some parts of the story are dumb but the engaging game play makes up for it. Since the games old it's easy to run too which is nice. Wish they chilled with the flashing lights in the cut scenes though. 8/10 would drink and drive again.

Wow. This game still hold up good in 2025 one of the best gunplay in 3rd person shooters good and engaging story solid 9/10 recommend buying it.

Soundtrack is amazing. I think the story is intriguing, and has good character development. The game play is oh so much fun. I miss games having bullet time. Played it on Xbox 360 back in the day and just replayed it. Such fond memories and I am glad it holds up. Graphics are not bad they kind of hold up.
Max Payne 3 is great action packed 3rd person shooter. While the online can be challenging and tough at times its still a blast to play,

What sucks is that the cutscenes aren’t skippable at all, not without a mod at least.

Absolutely fantastic! IMO, the best Max Payne. Soundtrack is splendid and complements the game wonderfully. Love cranking up the ole' soundbar and listening to them bullets being sprayed at those baddies. All these years later, I still enjoy playing.
One of the most underrated games ever made by Rockstar. The story can be slightly less compelling than first two games but I enjoyed the story. The combat is so frickin satisfying, some of the best I have ever seen in gaming. The realism is on another level, this game is more realistic than GTA 5. Top notch music and some of the actions scenes are on par with movie action sequences or even better. Rockstar really put a lot of care and money into this game(100 million dollars apparently) and it's sad that the game was a financial disaster. Amazing game.

Max Payne 3 is a massive game obviously started as a small project for Rockstar Vancouver before being overhauled by other studios and a massive inflated budget to boot. The game play is good the shooting is really good one of the biggest problems with the game is the AI the AI in this game is awful they know where you are at all times and will shoot you directly in the head it's annoying so annoying it makes the difficulty of the game ridiculous because it's not fair difficulty anyway the story is also pretty forgettable this game in general is forgettable I would honestly recommend Kane and Lynch 2 more both games are similar yes that game has worse gameplay but I think that game is way more interesting and it's also half the length. Anyway overall I do recommend this it's a decent game I recommend the first two games first but Max Payne 3 ain't bad on sale

Max Payne 3, though off-track from the story that the previous game envisioned, is a masterful character study that provides it's hero with the only end that he still deserves. It's wickedly fun, gorgeous looking, and houses the second best video game soundtrack ever made. I'll always love the 2nd game more, but this one is still a gem, and grants it's fans and Max Payne a proper ending that should never be tampered with.
Max Payne 3 is an amazing game with a rich story and it feels like a cinematic experience rather than just a game. Max Payne's life is so well explored, it keeps you deeply invested from start to finish. The gameplay is outstanding, and the soundtrack is equally amazing!
I had a lot more fun playing this one than both 1, and 2. Played all 3 recently for the first time, and 3 was my favorite with 2 close behind.
