Left 4 Dead is one of the best zombie games I have ever played, and one of the finest coop experiences as well. Because the special zombies can incapacitate a lone player, you need to work together to beat the campaigns. Versus can be fun but can also be very long as you alternate being Survivors and Infected. Plenty of fan-made maps and content to add to the fun.

L4D1 is a terrible game don't try playing it or people will stalk your Steam profile and then say bad stuff about you until you rage quit. The Peruvians [The toxic sewer Rats of the SA Community that have no reason being on L4D1] have taken over L4D1 and their is nothing you can do about it. L4D1 is a dead game and should stay dead in 2024. People will kick you for no reason or breathe and scream in their mic like 2 year olds. New players I would highly look away from this game truly. You should find a better game to play like DBD, The Anacrusis, Garry's Mod, Half Life, and other games tbh. Valve if you see this please get rid of both L4D games they are garbage and very toxic. As a zombie lover, I can't get enough of Left 4 Dead! This co-op shooter perfectly captures the chaos of a zombie apocalypse. The thrill of surviving wave after wave of infected with friends is unmatched. The AI director keeps each match feeling fresh and unpredictable, so you never know when a horde will come crashing in.

The characters are relatable, each with their own quirks, which adds to the fun. The mix of strategy and teamwork makes every playthrough exciting. Even though it’s a bit older, it’s still one of the best games for anyone who loves zombies and wants an adrenaline rush. If you haven’t played it yet, you’re missing out!

I didn't play this game at first because I didn't like the idea that health was so scarce. That you couldn't just pick up medkits and be instantly healed. But that's kind of the point.

Left 4 Dead has some interesting ways of getting the story across. There’s no need to talk about what happened before. We all know the story. It’s a virus or a comet or nuclear radiation or demons or a radioactive comet with a demon virus. There are some messages in the safe rooms that claim to tell the story, but they’re nothing more than pleasant touches. Why it happens isn’t important, but what happened as a result is the interesting part – the world is over, because everyone’s become a mindless, psychopathic zombie.

Except our four heroes – a black IT consultant, a biker, a grizzled Vietnam Vet, and a perky co-ed (who, according to comics, everyone wants to get with – they are the last people on earth you know). Nine times out of ten, these people would have no sound bites, but with Valve, their personalities bleed through in everything they do, from healing to riding the elevator. You can tell they’re separate people, but the great part is YOU take control of them, and are allowed to inject as much of yourself into them as possible. Which is what I always say you should be doing. And the zombies have personalities too. The Boomer, the Tank, the Witch (who this author finds a little too sexy), the Smoker, and the Hunter. At first I thought this kind of defeats the point of zombies, having ones with individual quirks. But now that I’ve played, they’re necessary to add variety of play.

But the best part of the game is the camraderie as you try and get to the escape point with your online friends. Before I’ve always played deathmatches where your mission is to kill everyone. I’ve made attempts at co-op games like Capture the Flag and Team Fortress 2, but it just seems everyone goes their own way, and we end up dying. Because we don’t want to strategize, we want to shoot things. Not this case. I’ve never chatted with people so much, or interacted with anyone in an online game. I like to remain anonymous and kill the zombies. But here, I feel it’s all right, because we’re all working towards the same goal in the same way. Not like deathmatches where you’ve got snipers, heavy gunners, exploders, cheaters, spawn-campers, and so forth. You have to move forward, you have to stick together, and you have to blow up everything.

My beef is that while they tried their best to vary the gameplay, it’s the same four levels with the same four people, with the same zombies. This makes online play necessary, because it’s the only way to make the experience dynamic. For example, one time I was playing and this one girl said she was trying to get an achievement for using only the pistol and no healing. Somewhere along the line it became my mission to help her and protect her. I was giving her my pain pills and looking for them for her, keeping close to protect her from zombies. It was like an escort mission, but it didn’t suck. (End result: We failed the healing, but succeeded the pistols-only).

If you ever wanted to truly experience Night of the Living Dead or 28 Days Later or The Walking Dead, this is it. The atmosphere is spooky, the AI is fairly intelligent (and there are mods to boost it), and the action/combat is a satisfying experience. Zombies react well to being shot. Difficulty curve is good. The special zombies add zest and variety to the missions. I think it's still fun to play in 2024.

Very good game, it’s a very good arcade horror game. I love the amount of zombies that chase you.

The only thing I hate about this game is there is no zoom in on the weapons. Just shoot and smash. Which works. I played the fuck out of this on xbox 360 in high school. I tried on my PC it didn't feel the same physically, might be the weird steam controller support thing I'm not sure. I'm not giving it a bad review because this is the game and the game is GOOD. Zombie games are falling out and this is what I consider the standard in a zombie shooter. Good team system, the items are good and the interaction between the items and the characters is something you'll quote for a while maybe.

I wish we could go back to those 360 days it was so good on there. It belonged there. I'm not sure why its not there.

I got the game for mad cheap on here, I'd say grab it just to have in your collection its just a few bucks.

Great game but you should really buy L4D2 instead. It comes with all of L4D's content + a ton more.

Sunk many hours into this on xbox 360 back in the day. Replayed it recently and still goated.

Just like its sequal, one of the best games of all time, in the zombie franchise of course. This was what started it all. No in game transactions. Beautiful.

The community in this game aged better than Left 4 Dead 2, and this game gives you that classical feel to it. This game comes with the original cast, i wont say who they are, just incase someone new reads this, which they most likely wont. Ill include the cast at the end of this review.

The story also is fun, it brings the infected to life with challenging feel to it. The gameplay is slightly worse from the fact that there is no steam workshop for this game. It woulda been real nice to see.

This games infected designs are classic, beautiful and lively. The models in this game are high quality for when this game came out, and you will always have the classical look, no realism, no remasters, no reskins, nothing. Theres just the original game with no workshop.

Bill- A war veteran, he has alot of experience with guns and he is in his mid 70-90s phase.

Offers a different experience from the sequel that is still worth checking out.

This is one of the few games I have bought multiple copies of, and have actually played so much the disc got heat cracks in it. The classic FPS-style gameplay is simple, fun, and accessible; yet the randomisation lets you have completely different experiences whether you're playing for the first time or the hundredth. The easier modes are easygoing stress relievers, whilst the harder ones provide a serious challenge.

If you love co-op games, the L4D series is a must-have.

Honestly the game is not bad, it's just that its sequel Left 4 Dead 2 includes all of this game's content and then double that amount + has workshop support unlike this game. I would only recommend it if you choose to get it as part of the valve complete pack bundle or some other notably good bundle, and only during a good sale time.

I bought this game at the recommendation from a friend. I think it's a good game, but I wish more was added to it. Basically you are a group of four people who go through multiple stages to escape the city. In other words it's a shoot 'em up where you can run and gun passed the levels. Overall good game if you like portal, but not for some gamer looking for wide open spaces.

Is Left 4 Dead a great game? Absolutely. Does that mean you should buy it 15+ years after it's initial launch? Not really aside from wanting to experience where it all started or if you're a fan of L4D2 and just wanted to nab some achievements. After playing it's sequel there's no reason to get this anymore since all of the campaigns and content that can be found here are in L4D2 which has a stronger player base, mod support through the workshop, more weapons, 3 new special infected types, and better difficulty balancing.

I decided to play through this game and get 100% achievements. This meant playing all campaigns and most of them on Expert. It was really fun but I can see now why some changes were made in L4D2 such as the nerfing of shoving and the creation of the Spitter and Charger.

The smaller weapon variety made me get good with the options I had available to me, and I was actually able to find lobbies of people playing to this day, so if you need a hand on some of these campaigns you'll probably find someone willing to join in on quickplay.

If you can get this game for free or if it's on sale for like a dollar or less then there's really no harm in giving it a try. I still would recommend Left 4 Dead 2 though.
