I have't in any way experienced this game in the way it was intended, I played it alone. But despite that I still found it incredibly enjoyable, would reccomend.

This is a strange game to recommend. It's a fantastic zombie game and an even more terrific co-operative shooter to bond with your friends over. But It's hard to say that it's worth playing this when left 4 dead 2 exists.

used to go back to this because of balance and style. What I mean is the pool of infected and the weaponry. I miss not choosing melee all the time. I loved using duel pistols the majority of the time against the common infected then whipping out my primary to take care of a special infected quickly. That's something I really love in this game. But you can just make changes in L4D2 to make it like L4D1.
I can't give this game a bad review simply because its successor is perfection on perfection. This is still a perfect game.

Unplayable AI
Final mission literally impossible without sweating shorting out my pc from watching the AI literally do anything
Some of my most cherished co-op gaming memories involve L4D. Set in a post-apocalyptic world infested with walking dead, up to four players can team up and attempt to navigate through levels to reach saferooms, and eventually an extraction point. These episodes are distinct and have a movie-like presentation. Each character has their own quirks, and personalities, and the banter runs the gamut from sombre to hilarious. Along the way there are plenty of obstacles such as hordes of zombies, varied "special infected" with unique abilities, and environmental puzzles to solve. While the plot is simple enough, the incredible level design, atmospheric visuals and soundtrack, and exceptional pacing make this experience truly thrilling with each and every playthrough. The replayability is astounding, as there are so many variables that change with every run. Teamwork underscores the gameplay, and is of the utmost importance to helping your team survive. Rescuing a teammate from zombies, healing each other with medkits, fighting off furious zombie hordes, and holding off against the formidable Tank or frightening Witch are just some of the elements showcasing the importance of cooperation and communication. I can't begin to describe how many nail biting moments I've experienced along the way. L4D, although shadowed by its sequel, stands the test of time and is truly a classic.
Childhood classic jumped onto the PC version, lots of fun! So fun to play with friends online too n not have the restrictions Xbox might have brought

The absence of melee weapons makes it more challenging, and in way... more realistic. Survivors without armor should avoid contact with the infected. Many prefer this one rather than L4D2, maybe you're one of those players. Great morbid atmosphere, interesting characters, smooth mechanics, easy to play... Buy it! 9/10

A classic. Theres not much multiplayer lobbies though so you either have to get a group of friends or play left 4 dead 2.

Gameplay:
If you're hesitating between the first and the second, I'd recommend the first because the maps are better and the characters much better.
The only reason I can think of that would give the second game an advantage is the graphic quality, but the difference is very slight.
This game favs the campaign, which is much more interesting than the second L4D, whereas the second is much more interesting in terms of co-op.
You can play the campaign solo or in co-op on both games, but this one is much more interesting.

A story to be played out with friends from start to finish, with a fantastic storyline and a great ending.

SUCKS do not buy completely modded anywhere u try to play. got to last level and suddenly on easy theres just 25+ tanks sure seems playable. NEED MY MONEY BACK or will contact lawyer. didnt pay for a modded trash version of the game.

An old but gold classic that still holds up incredibly well, even without the sequel in mind.
It has a really strong emphasis on COOP teamplay to the point where it's literally needed in order to handle the special infection which makes it a really satisfying and engaging experience that still has not been done in other games or if so, not done good enough to where you'd prefer it over how expertly crafted everything is done here.
Rich with replayability, great story telling, lovable characters and well crafted level design that i'd say Left 4 Dead 1 and 2 are Valve at their peak as again no other game comes close to how tightly designed and well thought everything is, which is why it's still replayability no matter how many years pass by and ontop of that it has community content/level editor so both games will truly never be Left 4 Dead.

left 4 dead 2 is better because you can play left 4 dead 1 levels in it, but in Australia left 4 dead 2 is 18+ so this is good for any Australians under 18 who would like to play left 4 dead (I would still recommend you're at least a teenager though)
L4D1 still holds up after 16 years later. although you will probably have more enjoyment playing the 2nd one due to more content i mean you are able to play the 1st games maps in L4D2 and it has mod support. then again you will still have fun playing the original. it focuses on a more grounded and realistic atmosphere and i fell like L4D1 uses the physics engine more than the 2nd one. overall 9/10 unless you prefer the more darker atmosphere and more use the physics i would get L4D2 instead.
A classic 4-player coop action zombie run-and-gunner that helped to define generations of games looking to carry forward and improve upon what can be so fun about the genre. This is not a looter-shooter and there are no classes or stats to manage, just fun (albeit dated) game-play. You won't find a terribly deep, evolving storyline - just the backdrop of surviving a zombie apocalypse - so don't be shy with that trigger. Blast (and kick) your way from one safe-house to another, but don't stop or slow down else your group will most certainly be rushed by a horde of zombies! Watch out for special zombies that crop up from time-to-time, breaking up the standard fair. Better with friends, but playable alone, this game is easily re-playable for those that just love to run-and-gun for fun.

Absolutely amazing game, with no reason to buy or play this due to the sequel having the entire campaign of the first game included. Still a good game, but don't get it.

Left 4 Dead is one of the best zombie games I have ever played, and one of the finest coop experiences as well. Because the special zombies can incapacitate a lone player, you need to work together to beat the campaigns. Versus can be fun but can also be very long as you alternate being Survivors and Infected. Plenty of fan-made maps and content to add to the fun.

L4D1 is a terrible game don't try playing it or people will stalk your Steam profile and then say bad stuff about you until you rage quit. The Peruvians [The toxic sewer Rats of the SA Community that have no reason being on L4D1] have taken over L4D1 and their is nothing you can do about it. L4D1 is a dead game and should stay dead in 2024. People will kick you for no reason or breathe and scream in their mic like 2 year olds. New players I would highly look away from this game truly. You should find a better game to play like DBD, The Anacrusis, Garry's Mod, Half Life, and other games tbh. Valve if you see this please get rid of both L4D games they are garbage and very toxic. As a zombie lover, I can't get enough of Left 4 Dead! This co-op shooter perfectly captures the chaos of a zombie apocalypse.
