I bought Renoir on sale, especially because it was affordable and for the sake of its visual style. On my first try I did not enjoy the controls and uninstalled the game, only to return back to it three years later. Well, this has been a enjoyable experience for me. Theme music, voice acting, cutscenes, the story and puzzles were all quite decent. I played it with patience, a few levels each day, well you need patience because the characters you control walk, run and climb rather slowly and on certain levels you need to try many times. The criticisms towards the clunky controls is right. I configured the controller by myself on Steam and still, for instance, even grabbing a ladder or entering a door required precision. All in all, except poor controls Renoir has been real fun for me.
The case, when shady works shed light on the situation.
I can tell this isn't for me, probably should have tried the demo first.
The setting and style is fine but the controls are rough and annoying to press, and the puzzles are far too similar (I checked a playthrough on youtube and they never got more complicated than recording ghosts to turn off lights)
I spent 69p on this so no harm done.
EDIT - I did not put 17 hours into this game, the game seemed to have stayed running after I shut it down.
Promising game. Film noir fans should take a look into it. But the control and interactions are nightmares, along with other unpolished details. To be fair, it should be a mixed review. 4/10, more or less.
Pro:
- Classic noir style. Good voiceover.
- Puzzle gameplay in the form of short stages, a melange of mini platformers type. Perfect for casual entertainment.
Con:
- Interactions to be improved. Items won't response until your characters move to a super scrupulous position, so half of my recording time were spent on walking around on these unresponsive switches.
- Unfriendly Controls. You have to TAB each ghost one by one. I am wondering why don't allow us to select them through their numbers?
- Blurry UI. I understand a part of reason is the art style. It limits how you display marking icons on characters. So it makes difficult for me to know which ghost I select, cause the only clue is a slight glimmer when I press Tab. Just one glimmer.
- Flawed Chinese localization. Sprint means 冲刺, not 刺/stab. And please adjust the font by the way. It looks super unpleasant.
I really tried to like this game but for me this game is turn off the lights simulator . sorry hope you guys do better in your next game .
interesting concept but the gameplay is atrocious and repetitive. you can get everything you need from watching a cutscene compilation on youtube.
I wrote a review, but Steams idiotic new interface deleted it when I pressed the "No" recommendation button. Geez. Long story short: promising game, fully destroyed by horrible controls. Too bad.
Absolutely the last thing this game should be called (or tagged as) is a "Noir adventure." I'd lean more towards "Awkward at best black & white Puzzler." It is NOT an adventure game in any way as far as I'm concerned.
[Noir is not defined simply by a color palette and the inclusion of a "grizzled" detective, as a head's up to any other developers seeking to cash in on this style.]
Great sound design (except the player character, who's English VO actor sounds like a teenager,) and cool visuals (except the player character who looks awkwardly stretched from a 4:3 aspect ratio into a 16:9 environment. Is this a student project? I sure hope so...because man, is it awkward...)
Add in the constant need to deny the "install UE4" pop-up every time the game starts, the overly long and unskippable intro logo videos, and the strangely long loading times for a mostly monochromatic sidescroller and you're left with a somewhat unprofessional mess.
All in all it is a good-looking indie effort, but the frustrating controls combined with timed repetetive puzzles make this nearly plot-less, mobile-quality game virtually unplayable. It didn't have me rushing for a refund, but it will be relegated to the pile of unloved/unfinished games in my library after just a scant half hour of struggling to enjoy it.
Not fun.

A fairly simple puzzle game in the vein of SWAPPER with a traditional noir whodunit story--no surprises here. There were really about 3 puzzles that got me stuck for a while but otherwise not very difficult. I feel like these graphics could've been used to better effect for a point-and-click adventure but still, not a bad little game.
This game is really frustrating. It has the potential to be so good! It relies on reaction time but the buttons are soooo slow. And the instructions aren't clear. I kept mappying my "ghosts" incorrectly and in an effort to reset them, I went back to the start of the level and lost all my data so far. I just gave up. It's not that it's hard, moreso tedious and if you make a small mistake you start over. There doesn't seem to be any big payout from getting through the levels either to motivate you. It's a good idea but would work better mapped to a controller. Annoying AF
aaaaargh, AAAAARGH, the controls, THE CONTROLS!!! Game ruined by unresponsive controls.
As a person who likes Indie games, puzzles and noir style, I can easily say that this game sucks. Even it's good style can't cover the failure of gameplay. They simply used noir style to sell their bad game, that's it.
Renoir is an afterlife noir themed puzzle platformer that could be considered the lovechild of The Swapper and The Misadventures of P.B. Winterbottom. The puzzle mechanic relies on recording actions for a level specific set of ghosts which in turn have to help navigate the protagonist through deadly sources of light and around obstacles. While sounding basic at first, the game requires both planning, timing as well as some thinking around the corner.
The art design and soundtrack are amazing, the puzzles themselves ore both intuitive as well as creative. Only the story is mildly on the light side, but considering all the other outstanding features, Renoir is a bonafide puzzle game and ranges among the better half of them.
With about 7 hours of playtime for one playthrough it also has more than enough depth to justify its asking price.
This game is going to be hit or miss for a lot of people, but if you're as enthusiastic about Film Noir as I am, you will almost certainly enjoy it. You play the ghost of Detective James Renoir, who spends a dark, rainy night retracing his last steps in the hopes of catching his killer. This is done by solving light based puzzles in each area with the help of other ghosts that Renoir is (somehow) able to manipulate. I admit, I'm more into this game for its aesthetics and story more than its gameplay, but I did appreciate and enjoy the puzzles that required actual forethought and synchronization.
Negatives:
-- Lack of puzzle variety
-- Controls can be awkward sometimes
-- All ghosts are male and look exactly the same
-- It's never explained why light is harmful or how/why Renoir can control ghosts
Positives:
-- Classic Film Noir
-- Stellar soundtrack and visuals
-- A wonderful mystery story
-- Interesting characters
-- Creative gameplay mechanic
My love of Film Noir wins out, and at $9.99 the game is definitely worth playing to appreciate its visuals and story. I'm glad I picked it up.
While I like the setting and the style (Film noir? Yes please!), the game is ruined by a very unresponsive movement system, it just feels clunky and that is no fun at all considering this is a (puzzle) platformer.
I can definitely recommend this game. Good art direction, remarkable noir implementation, interesting gameplay mechanics and characters together make an excellent atmosphere of a noir thriller.
Nice choice for its price!
So far I love it! I haven't find any bugs or issues that might prevent me from playing it. But if I do, I'll edit this review.
I would recommend this game for all who like a Sin City style, mystery, lots of puzzles. It has great atmosphere and its overall dark gothic presentation.
Played for about an hour and so far so good. The controls are a little bit unresponsive, but this is not an action platformer, it's a puzzle adventure. It's basically about a ghost detective who can't touch light (for some reason). You need to control other ghosts using quite unique gameplay mechanic - you basically record a "replay" for every character on screen, one by one. Then you press the play button and all characters will start moving at the same time. So you need to think ahead and synchronize everything.
I hope there will be more story in the game, but so far so good.
Played it a bit, like the vibe and narrative, puzzles are a bit simple so far, through this is probably personal. Will be playing this one, story holds quite some intrigue.
The game looks better than it is. The controls are terrible. The player can control other ghosts without any explanation, light "kills" you without any explanation. The puzzes are "just there" without any rhyme or reason.
It just feels like a collection of puzzles with a noir graphics style.
