The game literally died. I really wanted to recommend this game but I just can't because of one major con. Well, first off, let's start with the pros. The story is intriguing, the art is pretty cute, the characters are charming, the gameplay is engaging, the humour is pretty hilarious, (all though it may seem too kiddish to some others). And last but not least, the soundtrack is very well composed. Now, the one and only major con that REALLY annoys me and is preventing me from recommending this game is: its an unfinished episodic game. I have the first two chapters of the game and they were really fun. But, when is chapter 3 and 4 going to come out? it's already almost been 8 years since the last time a new chapter was released. Shortly after chapter 2 released, the game has been left to die without any news of chapters 3 and 4. Really wanted to explore The Land of the Dead, really wanted to see what happens next. I wonder and hope at some point if the devs will return one day after being gone for a while now (the last time they released a new game was over 5 years ago, which was Room 208, I'm very familiar with this dev and know all their games.) and finish this game. So far still no news about chapter 3 and 4. So for now until the game is going to be finished, I won't recommend it to anyone since its an unfinished episodic game. Sorry Blithe.
Buggy mess
I think this game is very fun. Very intuitive gameplay, easy to look at, and fun for all ages. I'm going to be waiting on the edge of my seat for when the next chapters come out.
Abandonware.
As much as I'd like to recommend The Secret Monster Society, I just can't because of the devs. The game was supposed to be divided into 4 chapters and yet only two of them are out and there's no news from Deceptive Games for a year and a half now. Well, I guess I know where the name "Deceptive Games" comes from now (wink wink). Sure, I paid for only two chapters and I don't mind waiting for the rest of it, but the least they could do is answering and letting people know if they just abandonned or postponed it. Who likes unfinished stories ? I will gladly edit my review when I heard any news or announcement from them. I was waiting to finish the game to post an overall review, but after such a long time I'll settle for the released chapters.
The Secret Monster Society is a short Point & Click adventure game mostly targeting a young audience but it's like cartoons : you can enjoy them at all ages and understand more jokes and references as an adult. I actually liked the first two available chapters, which are a good introduction to the universe and the characters. The game is set in a world of creatures who secretly supply humans with dreams, in which you play as Blithe Dalrich, a young monster student at the Monster Academy who finds a strange device after a meteor fall...

Pros :
- Creative universe
- Interesting story involving time traveling
- Cartoonish and colourful hand-drawn art
- Good voice acting
- Suitable game for all ages
- Silly but funny dialogues and jokes
- Great soundtrack that perfectly fits the game
- Intuitive gameplay
- Nice characters with their own personality

Cons :
- Abandonned right in the middle of the story and no news from the devs
- Screenshots from the Store Page teasing us with scenes from chapters that might never get released
- Not for people looking for a mature Point & Click story development and deep themes
- Too childish for some adults
- Puzzles are mostly easy (but I'll keep in mind that the game is for all ages)

It really saddens me to give The Secret Monster Society a negative review, because I liked its originality and cartoon style and would love to play the two last chapters to see how the story comes to an end. However, I can't support a developer who stops the game half way and doesn't communicate about it at all.
All in all The Secret Monster Society is a good Point & Click adventure game, especially for children, to get preferably with a discount if you don't mind unfinished games.
too childish and too linear. not at all what i was expecting.
Came with a bundle i bought, didnt feel it waws relevant in keeping with the theme of the bundle. Very childish game
First the negatives: Sometimes the load times are pretty long and I did run into a few bugs. A puzzle at the school's basement and the final puzzle of Chapter One were unclear enough where I had to resort to a walk-through for those sections. That said, these things were mostly minor and I managed to complete the game.
The positives: Fun and funny, this adventure game is reminiscent of "Aaahh!!! Real Monsters," "The Secret of Monkey Island," and "Maniac Mansion 2." And surprisingly, unlike most games of today, there are real moral lessons in the game which are learned by our hero and the protagonist usually displays respect and reverence towards those around him, even refusing to speak to someone unless he removes his sunglasses first!
This game is rewarding and charming, and well worth playing by both the young and old.

Family friendly game that isn't too complicated. My 5 and 8 year old like this game quite a bit and are looking forward to the rest of the chapters.
THE BUG!!!! The game is slow, and up until I got to the part with the bug, I was fine. But when you get stuck, there are NO clues. 2 hours looking for that freeking bug!
It's an awful point-and-click. I fell bored when I played.
I'm honestly not so sure what I paid for.
I played the first chapter of the game, the graphics and music was ok,
though I had a bug while trying to lower the audio down.
note that at the beginning of the game the narrator tells the story of the game and it cannot be lowered through the in game audio settings. to add to it, at the audio settings you can see 3 different bars to mess with, but it seems only one of them works (the sfx one) as a master volume to all sounds in the game.
the plot was rather..a bit childish and strange?
the puzzles were fairly easy for me personally, but I guess it's ok if the game was meant for a certain age.
overall the game was ok, the real problem was it ended too fast! and apparently I need
to pay more to play the second chapter! when the game was that short!
it takes around one hour to finish it without the second chapter of the game, which for me was a total waste.
would be forgivable if we didnt have to pay in order to play the second chapter too.
so I can't recommend buying this game.
Excellent game so far! I've played through Chapter 2 as it came out and can't wait for Chapter 3.
Positives: Charming characters, cute art style, intrigueing world-building lore and environmental storytelling, and a wit that can be appreciated at a decently high reading level.
Negatives: There are numerous spelling errors in the captions and some slight bugs in the programming that cut out audio and speech sometimes, and the game is rather short and doesn't have the greatest depth when it comes to puzzles.
To improve the game I would recommend a proofread of the speech captions and a once-over for the bug-fixes, checking that all audio and animaton cues are in the right place. It's polish like that that would push this game into great status whereas it's resting comfortably in the 'good' category.
As a sidenote, what would make this game go above and beyond and make it excellent would be to involve more emotional themes, the main character doesn't feel like they have any stakes in the story precisely thus far beyond curiosity and a general feeling of helpfulness.
I thought at the end of Chapter 1, after Blithe apparently committed arson it would be taking a darker turn, dealing with his guilt and having to mature and deal with the consequences of his actions. And it still might go this way, I don't want to give up hope yet, but I would love to have more exploration into Blithe's character.
Cool point and click game, not a big click gamer but its a cartoon so I had to try it. Over all, its decent, will update later
- I don't like games which stop running when I mouse off the window. Why allow stuff to run in windowed mode at all if it doesn't?
- There's no escape key to stop the narrator at the beginning from narrating
- I don't like to buy "chapters". Yes, this was an accidental buy. We'll see how it develops.

An amazing call back to classic point and click adventures. Influences from classic old school adventures from the likes of Discworld and Lucas Arts titles are crystal clear so if that is your cup of tea then jump in.
Memorable cheeky characters, great art and interesting puzzles to solve. Very story driven with some Nickelodeon's "Aaahh!!! Real Monsters" flavour added to the mix.
A pretty entretaining throwback to a genre not very common nowadays.

Not even close...
While the first chapter is somewhat short, having completed it in about one and a half hours, it did leave me wanting more. I did have some minor technical difficulties with the audio being very loud, and crashing twice (once when putting on the sunglasses after scaring off the catsaur thing, and once while exiting the game); I never felt like it was detrimental to the experience. The game has only been out for a short while, so I'm sure the devs will fix whatever caused those issues.
I had fun, so I am eagerly awaiting the next chapter. :)
Bought this thinking i'd have a fun game to play for more than one hour....got to the forbidden forest got out and then ROLL CREDITS. When's the next chapter suppose to be out??? I'm not a huge gamer but enjoyed this game. Just extremely dissapointed that the first chapter was all i got when i thought i was buying a lot more. SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME SOMETHING!!!!
