Pros:
- One of the true "Family Frienly" games on steam.
- Runs well on pretty much everything, even the IGPU of my old i7 from over 10 years ago.
Cons:
- Runs natively at 30fps out of the box. You _can_ change this, but it requires editing of two config files and you need to have (and launched) both DLC for it to work.
Overall: This is a must-have for parents who want their kids to play "clean" & creative games.
I loved this game as a kid. Making funny creatures and taking over the world was a blast. Once you evolve into having buildings, that game goes to shit.
Spore my beloved. If only you didn't crash as much and I could access online features.
In short: Steam copies are broken, buy Spore elsewhere.
Don't get me wrong - I LOVE this game - however when purchasing it from Steam I did NOT GET ONLINE ACCESS. This happened when I bought it in 2021 but I believe it's still an ongoing issue. EA support was unable to do anything after days of trying so I wound up having to buy the 5 or so dollar Creature Creator from their store to register an online account, and I still can't share creations made from either of the two DLC despite purchasing them.
I don't quite understand the technical things but as far as I know it's because Steam copies of this game don't actually give you a CD key. When trying to see mine, even in the depths of the computer files, it comes up blank. Therefore, EA's side doesn't think I own it, and I cannot log in propery.
this is an actually fun game the only problem is i cant login so i have to go in offline mode but besides that this is so fun you can create your own CREATURES. The surprising thing about this is that this released in 2008-2009 for such good graphics.I recommend this game 100%
great game but tribal mode is kinda hard
This game was and looked fun when watching video's about, so i decided to buy this on Steam.
Me personally i think this game is good for it's release date being in 2009 and it's overaccomplishing graphics for that time.
So when finally playing this game i came to notice i could only move with WASD and i have an AZERTY and i couldn't find the settings to turn the movement from WASD to ZQSD. PS (I know i could use my mouse but this isn't very practical.)
Overall this game is fine but also could handle some changes.
Sincerly,
SamAnt31
a fun game where you can rule the world with anything you create pretty fun by my opinion
>Create EA account to create Spore account
>Create Spore account
>Bind your accounts to Steam somehow
>Launch game through Steam
>Login to your Spore account
>You now have access to Achievements (Cool)
>You now have access to other players creatio- You thought, no you don't. You'll have to open Sporepedia for that! Alt+Tab between your screens until your game crashes 'cuz both the website and the game run slower than my grandma (She's been dead for 4 years)
>Realize half of what you find in Sporepedia is locked behind a $40 DLC paywall that doesn't even let you preview the creations aside from a 144p tiny 2D icon (There's no DLC filters to help you avoid that)
>Realize searching for creations with this method will eat up more time than your work because if you're still here that means you're an early 2000's kid that has to make a living
>Screw everything and just pirate it again with all the DLC's for free because you remember it's an EA game ($42.68B company) publishing their unfinished product that crashes whenever it feels like on Steam
The game is old and buggy. It keeps crashing. My creatures keep getting the question mark above their head and they freeze. Nonetheless, if you remember to save your game in case of crashing, it's quite fun to just make the most absurd thing you can think of when you're building them.
The game is pretty good! Would not recommend trying to get through 2 or more ages in one sitting then you'll get burnt out.
This game is really fun. Also for a singleplayer game its good :)
Really great game, also brings back lots of nostalgia, from when I used to play the game when I was younger.
This game is decent. I only took this game due to the nostalgia of the old days and I completed the campaign around the same day. I'm kind of disappointed that there are no achievements however. It's fun to create monsters and try different ways to deal with the AI in the game. It does get boring after 2 playthroughs if you're only interested in what the game has to offer and not the art of creating abominations or your favorite characters from your favorite media. Not too bad of a game but can get stale very quickly.
my favorite part is when i replayed for the 6th time and my tribe got destroyed by a colossal version of a creature i made in a previous world: my dog
Spore was a groundbreaking journey, evolving creatures from cells to space explorers. Its creativity and charm left a lasting impact, even if some stages felt shallow. A nostalgic gem in gaming history.
Rating: ★★★★☆ (4/5)
Amazing. Even though it's 2024 and this was 2008, still amazing.
its a very fun game, yet it is so short, it would be fun if the second stage of the game was playable in the space bearing part.
EA pulled this out of the most dusty cabinet they could find and just threw it on steam. However without the necessary support, e.g. SERVERS.
You will be locked out of the majority of the games features.
And beware if you contact their "support" about this.
It doesnt exist anymore. Just a chatbot interface that FAKES having support. It scrolls through a few preset phrases and tries to find the most useless knowledgebase snipplet for you. And if you dont answer yes if asked if this was helpful the ticket is just closed with "solution:no fix"
-Borderline fraud. Stay away.
So far cant even play it because of an issue
so I NEED TO to fix a game that belongs to a companies worth $41 billion & $28 billion?
what the actual fuck?
refunded. ill pirate it instead.
yes its still a good game to play in 2024 highly recommend this game for those looking for a old style
This is a great game and is well made.
The reason I gave it a down vote is because it is poorly optimized. It has very little to no lag but it crashed frequently. I find this annoying because there is no auto save feature so when the game crashes you lose all of your progress up to the last save you did. Oh, btw if you go to long without saving then save, it crashes. I learned that the hard way.
Another reason I gave it a down vote is because the quality is bad and it doesn't fit my screen and neither of those change when I change the resolution.
Other than those reasons it is a great game.
amazing game
old as hell
glitches galore
hundreds of hours when a kid
dlc should be free
only on sale should you buy
The game is pretty fun but ea please for gods sake let me actually login i want to go online
Spore is an ambitious attempt at turning a single celled organism, through various stages of evolution, into a galactic empire. I remember my anticipation for this game before its release, wondering what kind of possibilities lay in wait, and of the endless replayability of colonising multitudes of planets.
The first part, the cell stage, begins with with our organism swimming in a primordial pool trying to eat plants and/or other creatures while avoiding predators. Once we have consumed enough material, our creature emerges onto land and thus begins the creature stage. Here we get a variety of customisation options to create our unique looking life form. Then we enter the tribal stage, which expands on the previous stage by adding weapons, items and attire. We need to form alliances with other tribes or go to war. During the civilisation stage we contend with spreading across the planet and dealing with other cities. Finally, the most fleshed out phase, the space stage allows us to leave the confines of our home world and expand across the galaxy.
I certainly enjoyed the customisation during each phase, as the choices to make distinct creations appear quite expansive. The problem, however, is that although Spore starts off strong with arguably the most entertaining stage, each subsequent stage feels bare-bones with uninteresting objectives for the most part. By the time I reached the space stage, I realised that the whole game just felt like a slog. I found colonising subsequent planets as well as defending my own to be repetitive. The variety of things to do just wasn't really there. While I did colonise a fair amount of planets on my way to the centre of the galaxy I realised I was becoming really bored.
Spore definitely had the potential to be on the grand scale of gaming, but I feel like it misses that mark by trying to do too many things. Repetitive tasks and objectives didn't keep me engaged. Not to say that this is a bad game overall, it just isn't a great one either.
Fun but why no auto saves I just spent 5 hours grinding a species and then lost it all because the game froze and crashed
Spore is an incredible game that lasts through the years. In this game you grow and evolve your own creature from cell to an intergalactic empire (note the space stage doesnt really have an end but it has parts that can be interperated as an ending) This game is amazing and i believe everyone should play this game no matter who you are
Great fun, however it crashes all the time. Without warning and even while trying to save as often as possible I still lose progress which is very disheartening. Its a shame such a neat little game is so broken, apparently it wasn't always like this either but something about recent computers apparently causes this? which means the game itself is out of date and needs some fixing, shame I spent money on this. Even more so since i enjoyed it.
Still broken, tried finding solutions and nothing, fuck you EA fix your trash
Its fun but EA accounts no longer work in this game so its better to just wait for the sort of remake coming soon, Adapt.
if you're planning to buy this game be aware that you cannot use online content buying form steam anymore as EA have remove the access to product CD key through steam. If you want to fully enjoy this game I recommend you to buy directly from Origin (EA Store).
Played it for many hours as a kid. Although it has not aged that well, it is still a pretty unique and fun game.
Spore: A beautiful, untimely video game that perfectly manifests an ethics of becoming --- that is to say, playing spore is to become worthy of one's fate. Allow me to explain. In the game of Spore, the player begins as an amorphous space goo with no meaningful characteristics. As the player progresses, they choose defining traits according to their play style and fate. How does one build their creature? With love, and compassion for the animal; but also with a sense of purpose. Spore encourages the player to choose adaptations with a mind towards the function of the appendage. For example, one may choose to modify the mouth of the creature for better biting. As the creature slowly develops through this process of evolution, they begin to manifest the decisions they made earlier in the game --- they become worthy of their fate. At the beginning of the game, it is not at all clear why the space blob decides to spare or destroy other creatures. This is the creature in its least ethically developed stage. As the creature progresses however, what it ought to do becomes obvious through its body. Should a creature spare or destroy another creature? Well, does it have level 4 bite, or dance? In this regard, the decisions that the player ought to make in the interest of their own power and duration become obvious as the game progresses.
The end of spore is a tragedy. It is the return to radical potential or possibility. In some sense, the last creature-man, the final form, is the closest to space goo of all the stages. At the end of the game is pointless, decadent, and filthy colonization and a desperate search through empty space for some kind of meaning, for anything at all. It comes in cryptic pieces of past civilizations and distant concurrent ones. The creature at the end of the game is lost and confused, a far cry from the one fighting for survival in Creature Mode or Tribal Mode. Even compared to Civilization Mode, the Space Mode creature's predominant new feature is despondent confusion.
This was the first video game I ever played at five years old. My father was gifted a hard copy when I was two or three, when it came out. I played it on a shitty, slow computer in my parents bedroom mostly by myself. On and off through my early childhood and teenage years I played this game, coming back to it after months or years of intermittently forgetting about it. Now, as a young adult, I've come back to this game. I purchased it for myself to play on my computer at college. This is one of the only games I've played that has simultaneously astonished me and allowed me to inject my imagination into it. This game is about creativity and its about history. So much of my history is wrapped up in it; but furthermore, the game invites you to experience history itself, by giving the player a multi-generational perspective that is nonetheless deeply emotionally invested. I said earlier that the game is untimely: what I meant by that is not that its eternal or that it doesn't feel dated, but that every time I play this game, it speaks to my current condition. The message of this game has not been trivialized by cliche or irrelevance --- it is a classic bildungsroman.
I doubt this review will encourage anyone on the fence to purchase this game. After all, the game is over ten years old, and my perspective on the game is deeply personal. However, I hope that this review will perhaps be seen by other fans of Spore, and provide them with a well-deserved affirmation that this game is a modern masterpiece.
very funky, very monkey, reccomend yes. i make monkey in game i made it.
i really love this game. however there is a problem where the game keeps shutting down when i play single player or when i go into spore creature creator. this has happened to me multiple times. i really love this game and i hope i won't be forced to give up on this game.
fun game, only problem is it is nearly impossible to connect online unless you transfer your purchase to your EA account.
Best game ever! Really got me into biology and evolution stuff. Good for all ages and a pretty good game for it's time. There's nothing like it on the market still.
Simple gameplay but very satisfying especially to unwind with something casual. When you guide a single celled organism all the way to exploring outer space it's hard not to get a little emotional! Very pretty planet design especially the gas giants.
its really fun
has alot of options to make your ideal creature and play god
I'm surprised how the evolution works in this game! This game is an actuall masterpiece , I mean like even tho I've played this game for only 12 hours 20 mins , the graphics are AMAZING and i really wish to play this game more but , sadly i have school but its ok!
used to be awesome but now it doesent let me play and it just flashes colors
Good game but you have to jump through tons of hoops just to login even if you already have an EA account. Waste of time. Do not buy. Let your childhood memories suffice for this game, shouldnt be difficult to just start playing a game.
This game is very interesting and creative.
The game has near to endless possibilities
Because you can meet other creatures created by real people.
Extremely fun creature creation game, active again in late 2024! Spore reborn! I played this game on the DS back on release, I played the PC version later. Its a fantastic game.
Though many years have passed since its creation, the game endures, its charms unweathered, especially in the art of crafting and shaping one’s creature to one’s will :D

I really do like this game.
It does crash a lot these days but the game is still a great one.
I might create a VM and play it on an older OS windows 11 still has several "issues"
Childhood game, love it. just as good as i remember it however it does crash every now and then
Good for all ages that can read, not the most educational but a relevant game to teach the basics on evolution
if the creature generation chose player made creatures then everything would be a penis
The best non-human character creator in any video game, hands down. This was my favorite childhood game, and I've spent way more than just 37 hours with this game throughout my whole life (no idea exactly how much time, but a lot). If you are patient enough to reach the space stage then you have an entire galaxy of star systems to explore. My main issues are the game's glitchy-ness and lack of depth.
Fun, and i think universim is a rip off of this game
