One does not simply review this game. This game really is amazing, you can learn all there is to know about it's mechanics in a day, and yet after 100 years, it can still surprise you. Swear on the precious you will 100% this game. A chance for you to show your good quality. 10/10 same as the extended trilogy.
I play on Ubuntu and require Proton to run a lot of games, like LOTR. Proton GE was necessary to get this game to run correctly, so please do some additional research if you plan to play this game on a Linux system. Once that was solved, it was just as fun as I remembered - great levels, a nice range of characters, and a joy to run around LEGO Middle Earth doing whatever you want.
The disco phial makes it all worthwhile.
Its funny. Its enjoyable and has lots of the lego funs and jokes inside it. If you like the classic lego humor. This is a game for you
gollum he is very miserable and one of the worst characters of all times every where and every thing
just find the climbing boots asap and use those
Can be pretty janky at times but is still enjoyable. One of the stronger Lego entries.
The Lord of The Rings has been one of my favorite trilogies since growing up and being in love with the PS2 games. The LEGO game does a fantastic job of covering the events of the movies and it is a blast to play as all the LEGO games are. Real sound and dialogue from the films are played and the levels designed do a great job of capturing each location. Overall it's super fun and a great way to relieve the trilogy again, and it all runs super smooth. I recommend for any and all fans of LEGO or LOTR.
Split screen is game-changer. Many memories fighting w my brother over where to go in Lego Star Wars. Also, it';s open world!? I'm obsessed with this. Peak Lego Game.
Pros:
- Three Movies to play through
- Fantastic Soundtrack
- You Shall Not Pass is an ambitious quote from Gandalf
- Open World Hub is epic
- 8-Bit Music is calm and relaxing
- Great Characters
- The Character Roster is fine
- It's so good that it deserves a remaster
Cons:
- Collecting Various Items gets repetitive quickly
- Some quests are ultimately reliant on trial and error
- No option to buy the DLCs
Lego games are some of the greatest gifts to mankind. This game is the perfect introduction for kids into the world of Lord of the Rings and is also a great fucking game.
It's funny, fun to play, and quite easy. I'd recommend this to anybody who likes legos fantasy and video games.
If you love LEGO games, this one is a blast. But the bugs are bad, they are very frustrating. There are a lot have work arounds, but it's also a lot of grinding.
Chromatic flashing water......no I am not downloading extra files. Refund requested.
Requires GE proton compatibility layer to be installed and selected to remove 95% of the visual bugs and glitches
The best video game adaptation of Tolkien's Lord of the Rings Trilogy in my opinion. Covering roughly the majority of the Peter Jackson trilogy, Lego Lord of the Rings sets out to make an interactive way of reliving the award winning films, and gripping books.
Yes some bugs and glitches are to be found, but they largely do not detract from the experience, and are often quite funny. I would not let this deter you from purchasing and playing the game.
Overall I find this addition to middle earth worth its salt, and was a blast to 100%
It's great but has a LOT of bugs. Nothing game breaking but severely annoying while trying to 100%. Gollum's little hop while climbing the fishbone walls is the single stupidest f*cking movement mechanic in all of gaming.
Very enjoyable. A good mix of relaxing gameplay and fun puzzle solving.
8/10
I loved this game as a kid. I came back to play it again to see if holds up, and while it is a children's game, it is fun to play through again and even maybe complete some extras.
It is glitchy, which occasionally leads to softlocks. I did have to restart/sequence-break a level or two to complete all the missions.
I am a HUGE Lord Of The Rings fan and this is a really fun and AWESOME game!!! But also somtimes it'll glitch and you cannot do some of the things you should be able to do. But over all 10/10 would recomend
Very fun to 100% but can be buggy
Despite being a buggy mess in so many ways, I'd argue this is the best Lego game in existence. The adaptation aspect is exemplary, both in presenting the story and world (with a perfect balance of campy humor mixed in while still retaining the source material's vital components), and in thematic gameplay which keeps the classic systems the series is known for while adjusting their style to fit the specific game. Later titles would feel increasingly gimmicky or otherwise less balanced between being "Lego" and whatever else they were adapting (with the exception of Lego City Undercover, which is its own entity). The two-player functionality hit its peak here imo, with levels where working together is properly facilitated and feels actually fun and impactful to engage with. I only wish the bugs weren't so prevalent.
This is a very faithful adaptation of Lord of the Rings and one of the first lego games with voice acting. There are TONS of things to do and collect, it'll keep you busy for days on end.
I loved this game growing up but this version just doesn't work well. The water rendering glitches into a horrible bright untextured mess that is seen through walls and makes this game unplayable for me. And a quick search online reveals this is a known issue that is not just on my PC, or my operating system, or anything like it, though I did not find a fix for it. It might be patchable, but I doubt it will be fixed.
Very cute! First lego game I've really enjoyed since the original star wars one as a kid. Closely follows the movies, including audio and dialogue sound clips from the actors. Nice open world options and extra side quests as part of that open world, if desired.
If you enjoy Lego games, especially the older ones, I see no reason why you wouldn't enjoy Lego Lord Of The Rings. However, that is not to say that Lego LOTR does nothing new or offers anything unique to the Lego formula. There is a sense of character progression with the protagonists. The underlying mechanics are similar to previous Lego games, but the overall feel is not. Frodo, for instance, starts off as a helpless hobbit with no abilities. As the story progresses, Frodo gains the power to illuminate dark caves, wield his sword Sting, and hide beneath an Elven cloak. Tools may be crafted with white bricks found around Middle Earth. They allow the active character to have more abilities than they normally would. For instance, you can craft a spade which grants you the ability to dig loose earth.
The world of Middle Earth is beautiful. It is a treat to explore the open world hub. Shadow of Mordor aside, this is the best Middle Earth gaming experience.
My gripe is with the levels themselves. Most of them are fun and the cutscenes are funny. However, levels like The Black Rider are a tedious pain to replay. At least the first time playing them is usually fun. Also, the game crashes after that level. Turning off depth of field and running the game in compatibility mode for Windows 7 fixed it. That also fixed stutters I was previously experiencing. I think the main culprit is the depth of field.
Overall, I strongly recommend Lego LOTR to fans of Lego games and LOTR. The game is still worth a 20$ or 10$ price point. I snagged it for $2.99. If you have not already, go ahead and buy it if you see it at a low price. What do you have to lose?
great game for any fan of lego or lotr. lots of fun.
Buggy mess. Every other level my character is randomly shot past the sky-box or stuck in a falling animation on an object. The platforming is god awful. There are sections with thin, brown walkways that have "helpful" invisible walls to keep you from falling off but they just keep you from actually getting on the platform.
Steam Version is very buggy and crashes regularly
Loads o fun Lego game.
- Great playthrough and not steep in difficulty.
- Lots to explore in and between missions due to its both open world and missions components.
You actually play through the entire LotR trilogy this way.
- Official audio and official music from the LoTR trilogy greatly enhancing the nostalgia and overal gaming experience. There is nothing like starting off your adventure with the shire music.
- Cutscenes and game mechanics are typical Lego bringing additional humor and puns into the game
Tossing a dwarf is a must in order to progress.
- Hearing Gandalf again was great. Hearing Saruman cast his spell when attempting to traverse over the mountain (Caradhras) gave me goosebumps.
If unfamiliar with LotR trilogy it might be lacking a bit in story due 2 cutscenes being relatively short, filled with puns and cinematic highlights
Start of the game
You start (after the proloque) in a cutscene where you are in Bilbo's house (the Shire) as Gandalf tells you about the ring. Once Gandalf tells you to go Bree you are free to explore the Shire as an open world area.
Like any other Lego game you can switch between character(s) during campaign based on the characters avalaible @ that point. So yes you can switch to Samwise the brave as well.
The 1st mission starts when entering the cornfield and the cutscene kicks in. Merry and Pippin bump into Frodo and Sam while being chased by the angry farmer. You play through the entire part in the woods where the halflings avoid the Nazgul until they are spotted and have to bolt for the ferry (end o mission).
You actually continue the open world on the other side of the ferry making your way to bree (another Town you can freely explore). Following a cutscene from the prancing pony you exit bree in open world until you reach the bottom of weathertop where the next cutscene kicks in and so does mission 2. .
Mixxed feelings:
Fans from LotR know the fellowship of the ring splits up into several smaller groups.
This also happens in the Lego game and we are free to switch between groups simply by switching character.
Somewhat a neat feature. However this can cause the trilogy to deform.
I overprogressed with Frodo and Sam, standing in front of mount doom waiting for Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli to still go from helms deep towards Minas Tirith. The Eye of Sauron did prevent me from Entering mount doom but it should've hold me a few missions before that.
If you like LEGO games, get this. I have just finished my second 100% (first was on Xbox 360, YEARS ago) and it still holds up. there are a few glitches. The two worst, which have workarounds, go as follows. Occasionally when id' fish, the item I fish up would get stuck in an unobtainable spot and id have to restart. The other bug being push puzzles. When pushed sometimes they will go flying in the air and just stay and other times they just don't move. Again, there's workarounds. Remember this game was added to steam in 2012, and hasn't been updated in YEARS so cut it some slack. Yap-sesh aside, 10/10 will play again.
its a good game but it has sooooo many bugs
Very good game but you need a controller if you want to enjoy the game.
If you like LOTR, you need to have this. Nostalgia + LOTR. Perfect balance of collecting and fun.
One of the top 3 Lego Games
I love this game with all my heart!
LOTR Lego is my go to cozy game <3
When you finish the story you are BARELY skimming the surface! There are LOADS of side quests to get through to 100% the game, it is awesome fun to travel around the map with different characters to unlock new things, I'm still only at 47% with 23 hours so far, and best of all you can do it all with a friend if you wanted to!
10000/10 recommend this game to everyone to try!!
Absolutely would recommend this game! Hours of LEGO LOTR fun! and if you wait for a regular sale, its a small price cost for the privilege! 10/10
Started on LEGO games back on the Playstation 2, beginning with the original LEGO Star Wars. So much mindless fun to be had. A very faithful adaptation of the movies, and even touches Silmarillion material. Probably one of the few games that allows you to explore Middle Earth properly.
The quests, the open world, the humor - it's all done perfectly. My personal favorite is how developers flipped the Peter Jackson's cameos from the actual movies.
Lego game full of janky mechanics & bugged out achievements.
The game used voicelines ripped straight from the movie which was kinda nice, but there are noticeable quality dips here & there.
The games characters have inventories which is both kinda neat & super annoying.
Neat as in 1 character can have multiple different weapons to choose from.
Annoying as in all of the items are in the same inventory as your weapons including items that are automatically equipped when doing actions like fishing or drawing water.
Some characters also have more items in their inventories that others which becomes a problem in free play mode.
Sam for example only has 4 free inventory space slots after he's been fully kitted out through out the story, which makes it possible for you to pick up 5 quest items on another character & then swap to Sam which forces you to drop 1 of the quest items. At this point you either quickly change characters & pick up the item you dropped or you just softlocked the level, forcing you to restart from the beginning as these items dont usually respawn.
Took 29.1 hours to get 100% and all achievements. Could be done faster if you dont have to do multiple runs through levels to get stuff you missed. Great game overall, fun and funny. The only lego game I would put above this one is Lego Jurassic park. This game was played half on PC half on steam deck and I didnt have any inssues.
We played through the campaign, not really much else.
A good co-op overall. A bit different to other lego games we've played. You must first complete the campaign and then go exploring the surroundings to find hidden treasure. Player is tied to the group about to complete the next mission before end credits. Makes sense as it tells the story first and foremost. It was fine, but we didn't want to really go exploring after as Lego Hobbit was looming over us after this and we wanted to start playing that instead. Maybe we come back to this in the future.
As almost all Lego games, a good buy on sale.
As a massive LOTR fan and a lego fan, I can't recommend this game. The UX is horrible. Support for PC is awful (the game has awful stutters or screen tearing and has serious problems on higher end hardware. It looks terrible and really rushes the cutscenes (it feels like they were on a rushed development timeline and chose to make every cutscene feel as unnatural as possible. Compare this with Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga and you have a completely different game. The levels are boring, they implemented Assassin's Creed BS optional fetch quests and keyboard support is also awful. I tried so hard to enjoy this but constant tabbing out to look up stuff or tweak settings in NVIDIA is not what I had in mind for an enjoyable evening.
LEGO Lord of the Rings is nothing short of a masterpiece—a stunning fusion of two beloved franchises: the iconic world of Middle-earth and the timeless, versatile charm of LEGO. This video game doesn't just capitalize on the power of the LEGO formula; it elevates it to new heights, blending humor, heart, and epic storytelling with the creative freedom only LEGO can offer. From the very first moments, it immerses players in the stunning, brick-built landscapes of Tolkien's universe, all while delivering an experience that is as engaging as it is visually striking.
The game’s narrative follows the events of Peter Jackson’s film trilogy, with players assuming the roles of familiar characters—Frodo, Aragorn, Gandalf, Legolas, and the rest of the Fellowship—as they journey through Middle-earth to destroy the One Ring. But this isn’t just a copy of the movies; LEGO Lord of the Rings infuses every scene with its signature wit and playful charm. There’s a constant undercurrent of humor throughout, with characters silently mimicking famous moments from the films in ways that will make fans smile while staying true to the spirit of the source material.
The open-world design of Middle-earth is expansive and beautifully realized in LEGO form. From the rolling hills of the Shire to the ominous, towering spires of Mordor, each iconic location is reimagined with an attention to detail that will delight fans of both LEGO and Tolkien. The environments are rich with hidden secrets, side quests, and collectibles, encouraging exploration and rewarding players for venturing off the beaten path. This world feels alive, filled with life, and always brimming with possibility.
What truly sets this game apart, though, is its perfect blend of puzzle-solving and action. Each character has a unique set of abilities that allows for a dynamic approach to overcoming obstacles. Want to use Gandalf’s magic to manipulate the environment? You can. Need to transform into a burly dwarf to break through walls? You can do that too. This constant mix of abilities keeps the gameplay fresh, offering both strategic depth and the satisfying rhythm of LEGO's classic block-breaking fun.
The voice acting, adapted directly from the films, brings a surprising depth to the characters. Hearing the voices of the original actors—Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen, Viggo Mortensen, and others—reinforces the connection to the movies, making it feel like you're actually stepping into the world of Middle-earth. It’s a testament to how well this game bridges the gap between lighthearted LEGO antics and the gravity of Tolkien’s epic.
The pacing of the game is equally impressive. Whether you’re engaged in a high-stakes battle against orcs or solving intricate environmental puzzles, there’s never a dull moment. The humor never detracts from the story’s emotional weight, and even moments of danger are balanced by the charming and whimsical touch that LEGO games are known for. The cooperative gameplay—allowing for two players to team up and tackle the journey together—also adds a layer of enjoyment, making it perfect for both solo and shared experiences.
In a market saturated with licensed games, LEGO Lord of the Rings stands tall as an unparalleled achievement. It’s a rare gem that appeals to fans of the original books and films, gamers who love a good puzzle, and LEGO enthusiasts who want to immerse themselves in an expansive world filled with imaginative play. This is the game that proves that, sometimes, a combination of two seemingly disparate worlds can result in something truly extraordinary. It’s not just a LEGO game; it’s a love letter to both Tolkien’s legacy and the joy of creative play.
A true masterpiece—one that not only captures the magic of Middle-earth but amplifies it through the infinite possibilities of LEGO’s world.
I'm a huge fan of LEGO games; I'm a huge fan of LOTR. This was an easy purchase. There's a few buggy achievements, but overall, the game is a beautiful adaptation of the beloved movies. Nice scenic open world map, the character voices are from the movies, there's some classic LEGO silliness. I got 100% in about 40 hours of gameplay. Highly recommend
Just 100% this game, as all Lego games this is a very fun and chil, comfort game to play on the fly! Its funny, got lots to do, filled with references! Only bad side if you are a completionist some of the achievements can be buggy!
Just a ton of fun with high fidelity to the movies, with the usual LEGO humor thrown in. Definitely one of my favorite LEGO games of all.
Good game 7/10 however due to its age and the improved technology it made the game very buggy and encountered alot of problems. Even so I still 100% the game because its good.
Its my first LEGO game, and its quite old, has some problems with gamepad connection, but that was a very cool adventure for those who appreciate lotr
Lots of fun characters and a nice map to explore. Pretty buggy though...
Great Open World Lego Game. Made long before the era of woke bullshit being inserted into games for no good reason. An absolute nostalgic gem. Also significantly less buggy than most newer lego games. 10/10
Its a great game. Im a big fan of LOTR and Middle Earth, so playing it in Lego was a treat. Unfortunately i encountered a bug that prevented me from completing the puzzle for a mithril in Amon Hen, the one located in the cave. I've tried countless times, and its the only thing preventing me from 100%. Made me rage quit. Great game besides that tho.
