Its shit. Really shit.
Saw a youtube video praising a mod that fixes tons with the game and makes it maybe worth it. It doesnt and its not.
Its shit.
Aliens Colonial Marines, one of the most hated Aliens game, but I found it really fun, although does it really deserve the hate? Lets start off with price, I spent 14$ on this game, snagging a copy for my friend, so buy it on-sale. Another reason why it was hated was because of graphics, but its not that bad when it comes to graphics. Gore, lets keep this short, why does this matter. Story-line it was decent although the beginning with the 'SEPHORA' perfecto,
7/10
Good game, some good areas and fight scenes. Might have issue with the mech section of the game but its good after that. Visually its a good looking game that can be improved with reshade or nvidia freestyle.
The sound is great, from the atmosphere, to aliens, to guns to your character its good. The scenery is good and it looks great graphically. Reslly nice gsme for Alien franchise lovers.
amazing game use to play it on my xbox 360 !!!
Does not deserve those awful reviews. It has it flaws but the nostalgia is strong. Co op mode is great.
Could you believe i paid 50euros when it was released?
It was bad.
Now its..."playable".
Great game, had it since it first came out. I know it had a really bad release, but now after it has been patched up, it is good. I really enjoy the co-[op campaign with my friends.
fun
Brings back the good ol days
10/10
I love everything related to the Alien franchise so I like this piece of crap of a game as well :) At first I was angry with the publisher that they even allowed themselves to try to release this garbage of a game, after a few hours of playing I ignored all the bugs and terrible graphics and finally started to enjoy the game. I don't recommend this game to anyone unless you're a fan of the Alien franchise like me, so you'll love anything with the word Alien on it, for others it's recommended to avoid and don't waste money on this.
In 2024, I don't know who this is supposed to appeal to anymore. There are better shooting games. There are better Alien games. It's not horrifically terrible like I was expecting but there are only so many hours in a lifetime and 18 of mine were spent on this. Whoops.
The Overhaul mod made this game marginally better, but it's still too big of a sack of shit for any change to make a difference.
Great with TemplarGFX Overhaul!
PURE TRASH with the bugs even after all the updates. Get to the cargo control and the buggy game. Will not let you do anything after the door closes the helper guy covers the door move's and thats it . Look for the controls and any help there is none . Restarted many time from check piont and restart mission BUGGY GAME . WASTE of time how can people like this game? you only play for 15-20 and is screws up.
I NJOY THE GAME AND lOVE THE FRANCHISE.
Way too boring.
Aliens: Colonial Marines - Frostbitten Review by Kiba Snowpaw
“From the frozen peaks of HowlStrom, I, Kiba Snowpaw, have ventured into the universe of Aliens: Colonial Marines (ACM). As an Ice Wolf with 37+ years of gaming wisdom, here’s my chilly breakdown of ACM’s highs and lows.”
---
Introduction
ACM, released by Gearbox Software in 2012, was meant to be a direct continuation of the Aliens movie universe. The hype was intense, but the landing was as rough as a Xeno tail strike. Promised as a next-gen shooter, it became infamous for its AI issues and broken mechanics—until the modding community helped salvage it from the ice.
---
Basic Plot Summary
You’re a US Colonial Marine, dropped onto LV-426 to face off against relentless Xenomorphs. The story is meant to tie into the film, but it falls short, feeling rushed and full of missed opportunities. Expect more action than depth, with plenty of lore nods that may appease the die-hard Aliens fans.
---
Originality
ACM isn’t particularly innovative. The gameplay follows a familiar FPS structure: shoot, reload, and repeat. Its most original aspect was supposed to be the AI and environmental authenticity, but it fell short. Mods like TemplarGFX’s overhaul helped fix what should’ve worked from the start.
---
The Studio
Gearbox Software, the minds behind Borderlands, took on this project but failed to deliver what was promised. Plagued by reports of resource mismanagement and outsourcing, ACM became more of a cautionary tale than a gaming triumph. The modding community ultimately became the true heroes of ACM’s survival.
---
Analysis
AI Mechanics: The Xenomorph AI, famously broken at launch, was rendered ineffective due to a simple typo in the game’s code. Fixing this drastically improved the Xeno threat, making them the terrifying predators they should have been.
Co-op Gameplay: Playing with friends is where ACM shines. The drop-in/drop-out feature allows for thrilling teamwork, with squads of Marines coordinating to survive the Xeno onslaught.
---
Character Development
Main Characters: You play as Winter, a Marine with as much depth as a frozen puddle. The character arcs are minimal, and the dialogue often falls flat.
Supporting Cast: Colonel Hicks makes a lackluster return, alongside a forgettable supporting cast. The emotional connections are shallow, failing to leave any lasting impact.
---
Structure & Mechanics
Structure: Linear and predictable. It’s a straightforward FPS with no real surprises. Get from point A to point B, shoot everything in between.
Mechanics: The gunplay is decent, and the variety of weapons from the Aliens universe is fun. However, without mods, the mechanics are underwhelming, with the AI failing to provide the challenge that was expected.
---
Impact
ACM’s release was a disaster, and it quickly became a meme in the gaming world. Despite this, it has since been resurrected by modders. Mods like TemplarGFX’s overhaul have improved the graphics, AI, and gameplay experience, transforming ACM into something closer to what was promised.
---
Hook & Thesis
The hook? Play as a Marine and fight Xenomorphs! But the deeper experience of facing a relentless alien species fell flat at launch. The game’s thesis about survival and brotherhood was overshadowed by broken mechanics.
---
Praise & Critique
Praise: The sound design, environmental fidelity, and co-op gameplay shine. The pulse rifle sounds and Xeno encounters, when working, can be intense and satisfying.
Critique: The poor AI, broken launch state, and lack of character depth make ACM more frustrating than fun. The story doesn’t live up to its potential, and the DRM issues only add to the ice-cold frustration.
---
Personal Opinion
Enjoyment: ACM, with mods, can be a fun, nostalgic trip through the Aliens universe. It’s best played with friends, where co-op helps smooth over its rough edges.
Hatement: Solo play is monotonous and plagued by repetitive missions and brain-dead AI. Without mods, the game is almost unplayable.
---
Highlights & Drawbacks
Highlights: Co-op gameplay, pulse rifle sounds, and nostalgic environments based on the Aliens films.
Drawbacks: Initial AI issues, poor character development, weak narrative, and lackluster solo play.
---
Conclusion
Aliens: Colonial Marines is like an ice-covered relic—frozen in time, flawed, but with enough potential to make it worth uncovering. If you’re a fan of the franchise and can install some mods, it’s worth a shot. Otherwise, you might be left feeling as cold as the HowlStrom winds. 🐺❄️

I give this game a solid C.
Just finished the story. Don't know why people hate on this game, as a fan of the Aliens franchise I thought this game really captured the 1986 marines combat feeling. With beautiful visuals and perfect sound effects shooting the M41A Pulse Rifle felt amazing. The story was pretty good (except for what felt like an abrupt ending, it was good with a lot of references to the original movie in 1986).
If you like the Alien movies especially Aliens from 1986 with the colonial marines action you should get this game.
Didn't age good, better to watch the story on youtube. Bought it on sale.
nice game to play on sale
if you ever wanted to play in the movie aliens play this game
certainly enjoyable if you go in with the right expectations, it has some old shooter jank and it's not the same as the avp game but it's fun
I bought this game during covid as I had an older PC, love the Alien franchise and had already played AVP to a point where I needed something new. I knew the controversy behind this game but thought "was it really that bad?".
My answer... no it's not that bad... not amazing or even great but it's OK. Game runs well and looks ok for the most part (some cutscenes look a little jarring but I just hide for those and pretend they're not happening). The Aliens are dumb and when they stand up running towards you looking for hugs , you know it's time to shoot them. Story is not great but also not the worst either.
The best thing I can say is that when you're tired and want a mindless fps to get through then this is OK.
Role playing as the marine will make this experience better to. Runs well on steam deck too.
I know I gave this a thumbs up and the best I can say is it's OK but this game is exactly that. Yes there are better now with Alien Isolation; Fireteam Elite and Dark Decent but if you're a fan of this franchise and know what you're getting into you can have some fun here.
Waste of time and money. Bad game mechanics, poor visibilities
Only buy if you want to torture yourself with anxiety attacks and panic attacks.
Bland gameplays
Get Ailen Isolation or Ailen Firstrike Elite instead
Why game is bad
1. Character is sluggish and sprinting control is unresponsive
2. Weapon has no accuracy at all, it fires at random direction. You need really close to target to hit something.
3. AI are dumb.
4. Character sprinting is so short and unresponsive which make you easily get killed by guardian and queen
5. Enemy does incredible damage while you can't dodge. Parrying system doesn't work very well.
When this game came out - disappointment wasn't a word that adequately described my feelings. I was completely fooled by the infamous trailer to the point that I pre-ordered it. It is for this game that I no longer pre-order a game. Ever. I also do not buy any game that Randy Pitchford has an involvement in.
That said, I did play it with friends at the time when the MP was active which made a huge difference. The game was bearable. The action passable - despite the xeno AI and spending half the game fighting humans, and the nostalgia, well that was about the only thing they got right. I recently came back to it to try TemplarGFX's overhaul mod with the overhaul mod fix and the Patrxgt Ultra config and it does make a difference to the graphics that makes it lot easier to look at and play. It is however the very definition of polishing a turd.
If you are an aliens fan - I mean a die hard fan - then if you see this on sale for £5 - get it . Other than that, there are plenty of other games out there to scratch the xeno itch (AvP; isolation; fireteam elite; dark descent to name but a few). Oter than that, I really must give in to my 10+ year bitterness and and say stay away.
Game had so much potential but overall fell flat due to Gearbox & Sega shafting the game for other projects.
It is an enjoyable entry into the Alien universe but don't expect anything blowing you away. Nostalgia is there for fans of the Alien universe, most of the guns sound awesome, great seeing & hearing the Xenomoprh however the story & game play leave a lot to be desired. I'd recommend buying if you are a big fan of the series & even then nab it on a discount.
I am writing this review because this game has mostly positive now and does not deserve it.
This game is basically a scam and should go down in history as one of the worst game releases ever. Do not give gearbox money. Fuck this game.
One of the worst games i've ever played. Dumb AI and Characters. Bad level design and weird difficulty spike. What a NIGHTMARE.
Good with mods and friends to play with. If you like aliens and got friends, it's a great buy.
You need the TemplarGFX modDB pack or this game is sad.
I remember going to the GameStop at our local mall with my mom to preorder this game as a birthday present, since it was coming out just a few days after my birthday. Not a perfect game by any means, but I have some good memories with this one... Thanks, mom.
All the hate for this game is understandable. I won't lie the story isn't great. Not bad, but not great. Playing the game itself is fine. What I really like is the weapons from characters from the Aliens film in some levels like Hicks' shotgun.
I played the campaign on normal difficulty, and jesus it felt like this game was supposed to be a hard, challenging experience when being made. I struggled at some points getting shot from across the map from the NPCs. Or getting my forehead made a new hole in it by a Xenomorph from appears from the side with no chance to defend myself. Some parts the xenos were bullet sponges and took bullet after bullet more than others, odd but I guess it makes it more intense to play.
So the game isn't great, the story is not that good and the overall game is just fine. I don't think I'll play it again after finishing the story, but I do recommend this just for Alien fans to give a try.
Playing this vanilla with only the tether fix, this game is absolutely fine. Levels have very little variety, but I had decent fun shooting xenos in locations that are recreated very faithfully to Aliens. Guns feel whatever, but the sound design is top notch, especially for the motion tracker and the pulse rifle. If you don't mind the COD feel, this is a perfectly average shooter.
I believe this game is highly underrated! :( Sure, the plot is kinda questionable, and the graphics are not impressive for a 2013 game at all. However, the atmosphere and the authentic sound effects and music are just spot on!!! - it really makes me feel like I’m in the 'Aliens' movie myself! The AI is pretty impressive too, not just for your US marine buddies, but also for the xenos and facehuggers. Like, facehuggers try to hide and trick you, unlike in the Alien: Isolation, where they’re just super dumb. Oh, and yeah, the facehuggers in this game have a proper D'I'C'K, unlike in Alien: Isolation :). So yeah, it's kinda sad this game didn't succeed, cause you can tell a lot of talented people put a ton of effort into it for sure
the game isn't great but nor is it total garbage but me and my friend played it recently and it was pretty funny, we did soft lock ourselves during one of the raven sections but we did really enjoy the queen breaking out of containment.
This game is better the Prometheus and Alien covenant by a long shot.
Let's get one thing straight about Aliens Colonial Marines,
This is a messy, undercooked cashgrab from a company who mishandled the license and lied to everyone.
This game was the first reason I grew a distaste for Randy from Gearbox, and this game could've been so much more.
With that out of the way, it holds a very special place in my heart.
I think Aliens Colonial Marines should be the bones of a much greater Colonial Marines game, if that ever happens.
Fireteam Elite was a disappointment, all things considered, and doesn't feel like Aliens. This game feels like Aliens.
I was 11-12 when this game officially released and this December I will be 24, and back then I wasn't as harsh as I am now with the criticisms, yet still I find myself crawling back and playing over an hour or so of this game (normally solo) just because I can pull out the motion tracker, and hack doors, and place sentry turrets; all are actions that won't allow me to defend myself as xenomorphs get closer, but add to the roleplaying and tension.
This was the last game where we were able to play as a xenomorph, and not only that, but we had great cosmetics for them too! We have better cosmetic selections for both marines and xenomorphs than we have in a game like Fireteam Elite, or even Aliens VS Predator 2010 (which is an amazing game in its own rights for different reasons and similar tension).
The love for being a xenomorph has nearly vanished from publishers, and although personally, Alien Isolation is my favorite game of all time, I dream of the day we can have another Colonial Marines-type of multiplayer, or hell, something like Aliens VS Predator Infestation, where I could create a hive, strategically move facehuggers around, command my army of xenomorphs and have the ultimate infestation; something like Aliens Dark Descent which was amazing for what it is, but had no love post-launch and nothing but the one beautifully crafted foundation for a series of Aliens-themed RTS games (the soul is there).
With all this being said, I hate Gearbox for what they did to the franchise potential, and I love what was crafted in this game to inspire the future of Aliens games to come; more Dark Descent, more Isolation, and bringing back good old fashioned models like AVP Infestation, or the DS game of Aliens Infestation.
I recommend you buy this game since it's dirt cheap with all the DLC (it'll run you less than $30) and convince some friends to do the same.
The game was never worth $60 at launch, but I think over the years THIS is the price point that makes the most sense, and now is the time to enjoy old-school Aliens tension and action, without being a bloated hoard mode like Fireteam Elite (which I like btw, it's just mediocre in my eyes).
I recommend the campaign, but the multiplayer is "dead"unless you get a group together.
Cons: some quests have bugs that stops you from continuing or crashes the game, it is fixed by installing/uninstalling visual mods.
Worst game ever! Bugs, enemies that spawn right over you while your teamates disapear. Really bad level design, really bad leveling system, just buy it if it is under 2 dollars.
Nunca nunca nunca pague preço cheio nesta bosta!
Game gives me so much damned nostalgia. I remember playing it with my dad when it released. Just wish i couldve played its multiplayer
I know this game gets some hate, but I love the story and the gameplay is fun. Coop is the strong suit if you can get people to play.
Not as bad as most people say but it is definitely mediocre, even by PS2 standards. Not sure if some of these will apply for PC gameplay, but on the steam deck, the audio was not in-sync with the animation during cutscenes, lip-syncing with audio is bad all-around, some animation was missing when putting on the gas mask during the DLC, and sometimes the controls were non-responsive during some scenes. But honestly, I had a lot of fun blasting xenos and it did feel like I was a colonial marine fighting off the xenos and other enemies with all that dumb military jargon, cool alien universe weapons like the smart gun and pulse rifle, and the xenos were legitimately terrifying half the time, when they're not just running to you like fodder. I do recommend it if you're a fan of the alien movies and on a good discount.
And like I said before, plays alright, with some jank, on the steam deck.
