After playing and beating the game on Ultimate Badass, I can safely say that this is my favourite Alien game. The mechanics are smooth, the game runs great (had to put it on Windows 7 compability mode) and, although the shipped AI is a bit messy, a simple two-letter fix in the files fixed it.
Colonial Marines is great. I love the characters, it's super 80s-90s action movie cool, and it's a perfect tribute to the Alien trilogy (alien 3 was better than you gave it credit for.)
Oorah to ashes!!
I couldn't believe the reviews that claimed this game was so bad. I really love aliens and thus I was really patient with this game, but it is a wasted opportunity from developers. They had the money, they had the copyright, they even had Michael Biehn and Lance Henriksen, but still they FUCKED IT UP!
this is a first person shooter. had issues with launch, found solution in one of the forums and was a good fun. if you want a clean view then change settings in the view from grain to normal. DLC added more prequel missions. still dont know how to play as the alien. BTW only mod available and working is the health mod.
UPDATING EXE SOLUTION, close steam and logout completely, go to the drive the game is on, then steam library, steamapps, common, alien colonial marines, binaries, redist, then click and download UE3redist file, then reopen steam sign back in launch game like normal. the first time you do it it may ask you to download the file again. i did it and now it opens whenever i open it from the steam app. NOTE: the first time it did not launch but after that it launched normal after first failed attempt.
I was expecting less from this but I got the total opposite, so now actually playing this game I will say I really enjoyed it. I've seen people say this game is bad and honestly everything under the sun about it. HOWEVER! The game really wasn't that bad, they were spot on with the movie lore such as the ship with Bishop's body split in half, and the dog tags and even the DLC fits so well. Environment storytelling wise on par, the controls were a bit odd like "F" for grenade launcher where I blew myself at the start of the game was kinda funny. But the controls are hard to figure out & the upgrade systems for weapons is pretty fine. This game can be HARD on difficulties past easy but it's a good challenge though I can get behind. My girlfriend & I played through both the Campaign & DLC, we had a blast the Characters were good as well funny dialogue. We really enjoyed pretty much everything about it, after playing this my girlfriend who never watched the movies. So we did just that and after seeing all of them she said she appreciates the game more since it really included everything from the first two movies. Now multiplayer is kinda dead at this point but you could still host one with friends or sometimes find one or so people playing it, I wasn't really into that section, I'm more into story based games. So I don't think it really deserves a lot of hate it gets, This game is really funny with friends for campaign especially and I'm happy this game can exist unlike some of the newer games today.
As much as I love The Alien series to death to the point where I have a tattoo reping the series, unfortuantly everything everybody says about this game is true. Sorry guys. We got 3 other great ones tho. Just starting playing Dark Descent, money well spent there, not here.
Tons of carnage! Go for it!
The game is fun even though it is a 2013 game. The sound effects and back ground music reminds me a lot of the Movie: Aliens. Love that movie.
Fun game that stand the test of time! Love the Alien franchise, and this is a well executed add-on to that :D
Frankly, even with the deservedly well-loved Overhaul mod that makes this game at least functional, the game is still is still not fit for purpose. It certainly isn't worth $30 in 2024, much less with a bunch of DLC included that mostly consists of multiplayer maps for a game which almost no-one is playing and whose multiplayer is almost completely dead (though I imagine there are probably Discord servers where you can find a game somewhere, there always are for games that got a sizable amount of public attention like this one). And don't get me wrong, there's a reason it got the attention it did.
There are standout moments here and there, shreds of the potential that this piece of dreck once promised. The aliens, with their AI fixed, are incredibly lethal (especially with their ability to sneak up on you), and the introduction in particular does an excellent job of creating tension, especially before and during the first Xenomorph encounter. While the characters are mostly cliches and the story is, quite frankly, badly-written Aliens fanfiction, I did genuinely like O'Neal as a character and the protagonist Winter was inoffensive for a 2010s FPS protagonist who isn't silent (you could certainly do worse). Bella, though, I hated with the fury of a thousand suns, and the story, as far as I made it, was frankly dreadful. As someone who didn't watch the original movies, I actually had difficulty understanding what was happening and why, as the plot itself seems to mostly be an excuse to visit as many iconic locations from the Aliens franchise as possible without regard for logic or substance. Hicks and Bishop are just here now, the Selaco is in orbit around LV-426 for some reason, it gets shot down so you have to take shelter in Hadley's Hope, your entire crew knows nothing about the Xenomorphs despite the events of the entire Aliens trilogy (so that the writers can make the characters blatantly ignore the dangers of facehuggers) and so on.
I'll be frank: I don't really mind that the game plays like Call of Duty. The Colonial Marines are already basically the U.S. Marine Corps in space (complete with open-faced helmets and no space suits), if they wanted to make an action-horror title, leaning into shooter tropes of the time made sense given how a Colonial Marine is supposed to operate. The Aliens franchise had already made stupid action games, particularly in arcades (Aliens: Extermination and Capcom's Alien Vs. Predator beat 'em up come to mind, along with Aliens Vs Predator 1999). Call of Duty's fast-paced rocket-tag gunplay where everyone has an extremely low health pool makes a lot of sense for a franchise where both the heroes and villains are relatively fragile. Colonial Marines go down to a light tap from a Xenomorph, but a few accurate bursts downrange kills a Xenomorph just as dead. It creates gunplay that's fairly accurate to the source material (at least as far as I know). Of course, you do get an extreme amount of breaks (facehuggers can be fought off with QTEs, acid blood barely seems to affect you, and so on), but again, this is a franchise where Capcom made a cybernetic marine wrestle with these fuckers, I can accept something like this on its own merits.
So why is this still a negative review? One reason, mostly: Level. Fucking. 4. The infamous corridor on Hadley's Hope where the aliens are bugged to spawn infinitely and you don't have nearly enough ammo or health to deal with them. Your first instinct in such a situation would probably be to run for the exit, but only the Xenomorph AI was fixed by the Overhaul mod, NOT the human AI. They're better than they were in the original game, I suppose, but they still get stuck on terrain, run off and kill random Xenos far, FAR away from the ones currently trying to eat your face, and most importantly, are still required to complete required objectives in the single-player campaign. But the problem is, the door you need to open in order to get to the next checkpoint is locked. The only way to open it is to wait for O'Neal to leisurely mosey his ass down there while bumping into walls and barely following you, so that he can cut it open for you (never mind that you have YOUR OWN LASER CUTTER AND SHOULD BE ABLE TO DO IT YOUR GODDAMN SELF). This means that your only option is to plant your ass in front of that door and pray you last long enough for O'Neal to get there and for the event flag to trigger. The problem was that after what had to be at least a dozen attempts, I finally got O'Neal to the door...only for him to START RUNNING AWAY FROM IT BECAUSE HE'S PROGRAMMED SO THAT NEARBY ALIENS, WHICH ARE INFINITE, TAKE PRIORITY OVER THE DOOR-OPENING EVENT. This means that, if a Xenomorph HAPPENS to be near you when he gets there, that door is NEVER getting open, because by the time you kill the first alien in a short chokepoint of a corridor that dropped from the vents right in front of you, another will appear because they constantly spawn, and eventually you WILL die, because even on the Normal difficulty level they're absurdly lethal and against an infinite army of them you'll eventually make a mistake. You'd think the overhaul would fix this, but apparently the OVERHAUL WAS WHAT CAUSED THIS BUG IN THE FIRST PLACE, or at least left it in after the developers patched it out. And since the game is *already* unplayable without the overhaul, why the actual fuck would I remove it?!
This game is still SO fucking buggy that even with all of the enhancements and AI fixes it's already received, it's still quite nearly unbeatable. It wasn't even the first nearly game-breaking bug I encountered in that level alone! I just do not want to put in the effort for this by-now obscure pile of shit, and you shouldn't either.
And frankly? If you want a 2010s-style Aliens FPS with some Call of Duty DNA, play the Marines campaign in Aliens vs Predator 2010. It's infinitely better in every conceivable way despite releasing two years earlier: the AI isn't trash, the plot is somehow more coherent than this waste of code, Xenomorphs are given their full level of danger (acid blood puddles kill you and facehuggers are an instant kill) yet they're still possible to overcome with intelligence and good aim, and so much more. And there's two extra campaigns! And it costs half as much! AND THE DLC ISN'T A REQUIRED PURCHASE! Seriously, go play that instead, it's a far better use of your time.
P.S: One of the death sounds the aliens make is actually a boar sound effect from World of Warcraft. I couldn't unhear it and it's hilarious every time. One of this game's few redeeming qualities, in a so-bad-it's-good way.
good quality meat for sandwitches
Aliens, oh Aliens... when am I not going to love you, guys? Should make a sequel to this game...
The game honestly isn't that bad. Would definitely wait to buy it on a sale tho, not worth £25. Story is okay and the game play is good. The Friendly AI are so bad, pretty much the whole story i was wondering where my team was and they would just spawn as i got to a certain point or if i pushed a button. Definitely not the best alien game but wouldn't say it was the worst.
play the dlc. it's the only good part of the game.
One of the worst fps games I've ever played. Everything about it is just imbalanced, not to mention the infamous downgrade.
Truly the peak of the Allen cinematic experience. Fear and anxieties lie around every corner, and the allen, much like the films (my favorite is Allen 4) is a terrific enemy to have seen. The unpredictable nature of it's AI helps greatly in this regard. Sometimes it sits seemingly doing nothing...This is but a genius ploy by the developers to lull you into a false sense of security. This is instantly shaken by the creature emitting a screech and continuing to sit idly by. Mindgames like these perfectly capture what sort of entity we're dealing with... A perfect game, much superior to the horrible slop known as ALien Isolation. I cannot wait for ALiens Colonial Marines 2. I wish everybody and their sons to experience this mountainous game. This deserves to be revered and referenced to generations to come. A new religion is the only acceptable way for this game to be honored properly.
Fun with a friend, probably would not play it alone
one of my favorites despite it being a flop i still love it!
I've seen alot of good reviews lately trying to paint this game as an overhated, underrated gem of an experience. Do NOT get it twisted. This game is absolute trash. The story is almost laughably bad. The characters are so incredibly moronic that the plot happens in spite of them.
BUT. The Pulse Rifle is fun to shoot. The Aliens go pop when you shoot them. It's delightfully trash.
Well, 6 hours to finish is not much, I would like it if it continued futher, but I really liked the game, most people say it is bad, but I gave it a try, of course the game needs bug fixes and some improvements, but I can say I liked it to play, from funny moments to some jumpscares (yes, I get scared when I'm in spaces with just me and a xenomorph, because they can attack at moments you never expect)
If I made a list of levels of alien games I've played, it would look like this:
1st – Alien Isolation
2nd Aliens: Dark Descent
3rd Aliens: Colonial Marines
In the end, I liked it for the most part (expect the bugs and stuff), I don't know if I'm stupid but I think the story was confusing, tell me about the story if you want (more to explain the story). The game is cool, and thats it :D.
Good game 😁 nice story and gameplay, not the best but hey at least it's an alien game 🍻
I bought this game a decade ago and it was half baked and buggy. I gave up on this game . A decade later I reloaded everything and purchased the DLC. I'm happy to say the issues that plagued this game years ago have been resolved . I've finally played it all the way though. The best part of this game is the DLC. I recommend purchasing that.
Yes, Buy it when possible.
good game with friends for 2024. A perfect Holloween game night game.
Had a peristent crash in mission 3. i got my game working better
i was able to get passed mission 3 no prob
i uninstalled and reinstalled the game...
i followed the PCgamingWiki and i added my video card's hardware ID to the config file
setting it at max level 5
so I have better graphics than before, it was only setting them at level 4.
also i set the game to run fullscreen window mode instead of fullscreen.
one or a combo of all those things made my game work.
I haven't played the game without the "Aliens Colonial Marines Overhaul" MOD, yet
The AI teammates are pretty bad:
-not shooting as much as they need to
-getting stuck or not pushing forward when it is safe to do so
-serving more as a meat shield/punching bag for the aliens
-In these types of games where the main baddie is a mostly melee-exclusive enemy they just had to add another faction that is almost entirely gun-based and isn't fun to fight. kinda like Space Marines 1 with the Orcs and Choas Marines.
-The AI both Xenos and mercs get stuck or have their AI turn off if you manage to get far enough away or push an objective fast enough
-You can’t push forward into gunfire or Xenos when they keep spawning xenos behind you
-If you die in the last stand section of Hope in Hadles the game will soft lock where you can't do it again until you restart the whole mission
-This mod does make everything do more damage including the Xenos can 3-shot melee at full health +1 if at full armor in combination with your AI teammates
still being retarded and bad checkpoints, making parts of the game very frustrating.
so yes at certain points of the campaign, I removed the mod to make things possible to beat.
-The mod fixes the enemy AI for the most part but not your teammates while also making the enemies do way more damage which just makes the game too hard at certain sections.
Without the mod, all the AI breaks making it too easy.
it is a great shooting game in space
If your a fan of the Alien movies this game is cool
Tried to get into this game many times over the years that I've had it sitting in my library, and no matte my mood...it's just never been a fun game to me.
Now in October 2024 I'm trying one more time to get into it, and I get "updating executable" every time I try to start it, and it never starts.
So yeah, screw this game. I'm getting it removed from my library.
probably wait for a sale, but it is fun if you have some friends to play it with and like the aliens movie
Its shit. Really shit.
Saw a youtube video praising a mod that fixes tons with the game and makes it maybe worth it. It doesnt and its not.
Its shit.
Shit then, shit now.
Aliens Colonial Marines, one of the most hated Aliens game, but I found it really fun, although does it really deserve the hate? Lets start off with price, I spent 14$ on this game, snagging a copy for my friend, so buy it on-sale. Another reason why it was hated was because of graphics, but its not that bad when it comes to graphics. Gore, lets keep this short, why does this matter. Story-line it was decent although the beginning with the 'SEPHORA' perfecto,
7/10
Good game, some good areas and fight scenes. Might have issue with the mech section of the game but its good after that. Visually its a good looking game that can be improved with reshade or nvidia freestyle.
The sound is great, from the atmosphere, to aliens, to guns to your character its good. The scenery is good and it looks great graphically. Reslly nice gsme for Alien franchise lovers.
amazing game use to play it on my xbox 360 !!!
Does not deserve those awful reviews. It has it flaws but the nostalgia is strong. Co op mode is great.
Could you believe i paid 50euros when it was released?
It was bad.
Now its..."playable".
Hawk 1: Boo!
Hawk 2: AHHHHH!!!
Great game, had it since it first came out. I know it had a really bad release, but now after it has been patched up, it is good. I really enjoy the co-[op campaign with my friends.
fun
Brings back the good ol days

I love everything related to the Alien franchise so I like this piece of crap of a game as well :) At first I was angry with the publisher that they even allowed themselves to try to release this garbage of a game, after a few hours of playing I ignored all the bugs and terrible graphics and finally started to enjoy the game. I don't recommend this game to anyone unless you're a fan of the Alien franchise like me, so you'll love anything with the word Alien on it, for others it's recommended to avoid and don't waste money on this.
In 2024, I don't know who this is supposed to appeal to anymore. There are better shooting games. There are better Alien games. It's not horrifically terrible like I was expecting but there are only so many hours in a lifetime and 18 of mine were spent on this. Whoops.
The Overhaul mod made this game marginally better, but it's still too big of a sack of shit for any change to make a difference.
verry fun
Great with TemplarGFX Overhaul!
PURE TRASH with the bugs even after all the updates. Get to the cargo control and the buggy game. Will not let you do anything after the door closes the helper guy covers the door move's and thats it . Look for the controls and any help there is none . Restarted many time from check piont and restart mission BUGGY GAME . WASTE of time how can people like this game? you only play for 15-20 and is screws up.
I NJOY THE GAME AND lOVE THE FRANCHISE.
