This game is UGLY.... yes, we know. A shoe-string budget and tigth deadline doomed it to look like that.
There are NO X-MEN..... yes, we also know this. Draconian rules instigated back then by the now Ex-CEO of Marvel made the roster a victim of this.
But do not ask of this game what it can not give you, ask of it what it can.
It CAN´T give you the 3-v-3 battles of MVC2 and MVC3 / UMVC3.
But it CAN give you the perfected version of 2-v-2 battles of MVC1 and the perfected version of the Gems System from Marvel Super Heroes.
It CAN´T give you a gripping, multilayered story like Mortal Kombat (2011) or Mortal Kombat X.
But it CAN give you a Saturday Morning Cartoon crossover of Marvel heroes and Capcom characters going around the world trying to stop a super evil robot fusion.
Once you internalize this facts and pass the ugly capes, you will find an amazing and exciting fighting game waiting for you.
Base game is dull, Beyond mod gives it some rizz. I adore the new style.
That said, I only recommend it if you're okay with sinking your time into a low-pop fighting game or have friends who want to play it with you. Matches are still hard to find, and I got crushed in ranked very easily as a newbie.
MvCI launched with 2 major flaws: 1) no X-Men; 2) an inconsistent art style and ugly character model design. The Beyond mod fixes the latter with additional improvements to stages, music, balance, and more, revealing an underlying gem of a game that clearly needed more time in the oven.

What happened with this game exactly?
Marvel vs Capcom Infinite has had a rough history and a huge impact against the MvC franchise. Here's a quick summary:
In 2009, Disney bought the rights to Marvel and chose not to renew the Marvel license with Capcom to coincide with their decision to self-publish their own games. As a result, Capcom was forced to delist Marvel vs. Capcom from all digital storefronts a few years later. We never saw the likes of Marvel vs. Capcom for awhile, and there was a time where we thought we would never get another followup after MvC3. However, in 2016, Disney chose to discontinue self-publishing their own games and opened the floor to third-party publishers again. Excitement hit when fans were greeted with a rerelease of UMVC3 and an announcement trailer for Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite.
But a lot of that excitement quickly turned to disgust after the trailer. The presentation looked fairly ugly, with tons of style mismatch and a dull, boring look. It was later revealed that the budget for this game was ridiculously small, just a little over half of the amount to make DLC content for Street Fighter V. Since the X-Men were acquired by Fox, there was also little choice but to leave them out of the roster as well, leaving us with an awkward and (what feels like) an unfinished game.
Fans were more and more harsh with this game as its horrible visuals was presented more and more to the public. The PR disaster spawned from this game led to cease future development of any further Marvel vs. Capcom projects until a surprise announcement of the Marvel vs. Capcom Collection earlier this year. For over 7 years, it was thought that the friendly ties between Capcom and Marvel had been completely severed and we would never see another Marvel vs Capcom again.
While the gameplay itself is really fun and a callback to Marvel vs Capcom 1 and Marvel Super Heroes, the unfortunate truth is that presentation makes up a very large chunk of enjoyment in a fighting game for most people, especially a game like Marvel vs. Capcom. It's hard to find enjoyment in your punches if they don't feel rewarding. It's even worse when characters from the Marvel cinematic universe are mixed in with cartoony characters like Mega Man X, completely ruining aesthetic and immersion and thus can make it very unenjoyable. Even if you find yourself enjoying the gameplay, you'll find there's very few things going for it outside of just online play, and the overall game can feel very barebones.
So why all the positive votes all of a sudden?
That's where the modding community steps in.
A few months ago, famous hypeman youtuber Maxmilian Dood announces he has joined with a team of modders to completely overhaul the look and feel of MvCI. The mod would feature a rework in character models, UI, sound, and some gameplay balance changes. This mod also includes new gamemodes such as having another player as your tagteam partner ala 2XKO. The presentation style is a throwback to classic Marvel vs. Capcom 1 with tons of references to other games such as MvC2 and UMvC3.
Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite and Beyond launched with the FGC flocking to this game. It has so far been a big success, breathing life into this game as the concurrent player count has risen from the single digits to a very healthy triple (500 players as of now).
Does the game deserve the praise? After all, it's just a mod and doesn't reflect the base game.
Good point. However, here's an argument that a ton of people in the FGC share (and that I share as well):
A positive score shares that the consumer is interested in whatever the game is selling. By giving the game a spike in positive reviews, we share to Capcom and Marvel that the game is perfectly fun and playable if it had an overhaul in presentation, especially if there's a possibility for the series to make a return (which could be very likely). MvCIB is exactly what we want a MvC game to look and play, and giving this game a surge in life would give Capcom a chance to look at how they present the series differently if they were given another chance to make another entry.
The positive score in this review reflects on not just the solid gameplay, but to join in the rally that THIS is what we want MvC to be. Capcom's current track record shows that they listen to sales, especially with the fun disaster that was the Street Fighter V launch.
So how's the game?
Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite is a 2v2 tag-team fighting game with a central focus on combos and jumping to a tag-team partner. Special to this game are the ability to use Time Stones, an item we haven't seen in the MvC series since Marvel Super Heroes. These stones give your characters the ability to manipulate the field with new abilities and super attacks. For instance, the Time Stone's Infinity Surge (its one-button attack) can create a dash which can phase through attacks, and it's Infinity Storm (its super attack) allows you to quick-combo into other moves. Each player can choose one stone out of 6 at the start of a round, giving games more of a chaotic feel to them.
You are no longer able to use an assist move. Instead, you have a dedicated Tag button which you can use to bring another character rushing in. The character will continue the combo from where it left off, which can cause for some devastating damage. The drawback is that your previous character is vulnerable for a short period while you've tagged them out, so the opponent would be able to hit both characters at once if they have the chance. DHCs are gone: you cannot combo a super with another character's super. However, you can choose to Tag during a super move, then combo into one afterward.
Besides the Tag and Ininity Stone buttons, the game is essentially a 4-button combo-centric fighter. It still utilizes the Magic series from the previous games making combos much more customizable and easier to pull off than something like Street Fighter. However, while there are tons of options for long combos, the game does not have a major Touch of Death issue like MvC3 as moves scale down faster with the 2v2 system. You can be trapped in a very long combo and still have a chance to come back, and even be just fine with doing damage with basic combos. It's a fun combo-heavy system that hearkens back to old-school MvC while adding new mechanics to keep things fresh. Not super in-depth, but very unique.
If you're looking to just play MvCI by itself, there is not a lot to look forward to. Online in the original game is basically dead, and there are not very many single player options to look forward to besides Arcade and Mission. However, there is the infamous Story Mode, what used to be the main selling point of this game. It is ridiculous and pretty terrible, but actually pretty hilarious in a so-bad-it's-good sort of way. I would highly recommend grabbing friends and having a watch party with the cutscenes, it's a riot.
With the mod, the game receives an overhaul. Characters no longer look like their ugly realistic MCU counterparts: the artstyle is revamped and overhauled to have the colorful comicbook-style as it used to. Music, voices, and brand new modes have been created to breathe new life into this game. The mod is 100% free as long as you purchase the base game. You can view all the details from the website.
Consensus?
Overall, the game is pretty damn fun, but leaves something to be desired in its presentation. However, that all changes with the Infinite & Beyond mod. It is ridiculously fun online and leaves me spamming for more runbacks. This mod is the Other M of Marvel vs Capcom. If we're on the heels of another MvC game, this mod can hopefully send Capcom and Marvel message that we want more games that are not whatever MvCI started out as.

I bought the game before Maximilian Dood did his amazing Beyond revamp, which is a commendable grassroots effort to bring new life to this VS installment. I deeply thank him for his effort and putting his money so selflessly into this passion project. The problem is that the base game is, pretty much, the worst in the series.
In all honesty, I can't say it is now n excellent game when there are much better fighting games out there, including all the other games in Capcom's VS series available on Steam.
This game is outstanding especially with new content that just came out!! How about a new Marvel versus Capcom games featuring more Guardian steel my gosh add Wolverine please and Deadpool!!!

Download MvCI Beyond mod. Gives the game that unique graphical look the past games have always had, also has some nice music, voices, and gameplay replacements/changes.

For real though: Thank You Max and Beyond Team. Adding a much needed coat of paint (and then some) to this game actually made me sit down for hours to play this.
This game was cheeks before the mod. Playable, solid cheeks, but cheeks nonetheless. But this mod is breathing new life and making something realized with it, and I can dig it.

Before MVCI & Beyond mod
I will be honest i got the game only for the MVCI & Beyond mod released on Dec 20 2024, and i play the vanilla version before installing the mod, the game as it is is thrash, many characters missing, the lack of characters, art style and any form of love is aparent, but the gameplay is good, the game has fun mechanics and made many characters fun.
After MVCI & Beyond mod
The game just melts in personality, the chracter models, portraits, and music, everything just shines after the mod, and finally that good gameplay has a presentation that invites you to play over and over, the community is for sure what mantains any game, and this is definite proof, of the infinite posibilities a game has with a loving and caring community.

Seven Years Later
With the community effort of modders and one notable patron @maximilian, new life was breathed into a controversially received game when it launched, healing a wound to a legacy series of games that made crossovers great.
With a modding team now headed by @erebus, the MVCI_Beyond devs gave Infinite much needed changes.
Spearheaded by Max and @wistfulhopes was an overhaul to the material shader giving it the cel-shaded look of classic Versus Games and tailored models/costumes bringing them in line with the legacy of Marvel and Capcom characters.
UI and presentation of notable artists and creators such as @TheBrunoZone, @jorgeconstantini, @ianzhouart, @Kainonaut, @dsloogs, @calvinsimsart, @thediepod, @jesvillaart @themangaprofessor, @wavechan, & @neatoshin.
Updated music for menus & character themes by the likes of @LittleVMills & @alexmoukala.
Additional engineering by @wistfulhopes, @erebus, and "French Doge" with modes featuring 2v2 PvP/free-for-all (offline) and balance changes supported by the MvCI competitive community.
Despite minor nitpicks such as 22A (DP), and a lack of X-Men due to software/security limitations.
MvCI is still a worthwhile (discount) purchase alongside the highly recommended MvCI Beyond mod giving you a package that celebrates the Marvel vs Capcom series.
Like the Marvel vs Capcom Fighting Collection, this recent community update mod has reason to make fans and I True Believers again.

MvCI and Beyond fan made patch fixes alot of the major issues this game has, definitely recommend for people that enjoy Marvel fighting games
The game is in an excellent place with Maximilian's mod, a very easy recommendation especially when it's on sale as low as $8.
The biggest issue, graphical presentation, has been overhauled for multiplayer (single player story mode is not properly optimized graphically, but it is playable). Art direction has been brought back to an MvC3 inspired comic/cel-shade, completely abandoning the MCU take that was originally attempted. With it, there are plenty of nods to previous games in the series and other franchises. It's a huge love letter to more than just the Versus series.
Core gameplay was never a problem with the original game. The active tag system is some of the most fun I've had in a fighting game. But the mod comes with a substantial balance patch that focuses on giving lesser used characters more juice to play with.
It was always hard to recommend this game because of how painful it was to look at, despite finding it super fun to mess around in. But now it's in a great place where I can recommend this to anyone.
Max and his team poured a lot of love and care into this project, the MvC:I&B resurgence wouldn't be possible without them.
Capcom failed but the fans picked up the pieces of this game and molded it into something a lot better. If you are at all interested then buy this game right now that's in a discount and then check out Marvel vs Capcom Infinite & Beyond which is a graphics and balancing mod for this game. Hopefully this will give this game a new wave of fans and revitalise its community.
After 7 years in beta Marvel Vs Capcom Infinite finally released. Thank you Max & the MVCI:Beyond team, this game is dope and the much needed facelift does a ton. Feels like a new game and one that ppl can finally reccomend!
Fun mechanics wise. Presentation and content wise it's not that great. Not very well optimized either. SF6 runs butter smooth on my PC, yet this game has weird hiccups at times. Looking forward to the MVC:I and Beyond mod, as it aims to fix a lot of those issues. Worth a grab on discount regardless
I recommend the game NOW because Maximillan is coming out with MvCI Beyond tomorrow and it is definitely worth it! Only reason I bought this game today is because of his project along with the 40 fans he worked with. Great job and looking forward to it!

This game absolutely rules. I get that it wasn't everything people wanted in an MVC sequel when it came out but viewed as it's own game it's fantastic, and now that the MVC collection has shown pre-mvc2 games to more people it seems like it actually fits into the series' style better than it got credit for (soul storm double team rules). It's biggest flaw - soft lit blue-grayed characters from the MCU - is Disney's fault, CAPCOM made an awesome game with what they were allowed to use. As for the cringey story mode, name the vs game with a better story mode? Name another vs game with a story mode?
Only thing they really missed was making the red life work like TVC baroque energy, woulda been sweet.
If you slept on this game when it was new and missed all the drama, picking it up on sale with all the dlc out is a great deal for what this game is.
It just doesn't feel as good as the other games from the series.
Gameplay isn't that bad per se, you got the 2v2 battles with the Infinity Stones mechanic, but that's about it. It feels like something is missing.
Graphics are okay, but some models are just eww.
Character roster feels empty. Lots of the best characters you probably wanted to play are not in the game. Lineup is just too limited.
Can be fun to play every once in a while, but eh, I'd rather just play again Marvel vs Capcom 2.

Cant believe ive never reviewed this but in light of the overhaul mod ill put my two cents here.
This game is utter sex, 100% my favorite marvel(and maybe fighting game) to date. When the game launched it was plagued with tons of major issues like xmen being tied up in legal stuff between disney and fox, and the devs did NOT handle that well (characters are just functions, anyone?). Graphics too are obviously seriously lacking, and Its a shame they botched the presentation so hard because the actual gameplay is incredible. Marvel at it's peak

My least favorite in the series but still a great game. Check out the MvC Infinite and Beyond mod for what the game should have been at launch, it's free and brilliant. Also really wish we had gotten some X-Men characters. Oh well, there is always MvC 5... right Capcom!?

I bought this game because of Maximillian Dood's upcoming MVCI: And Beyond mod. I'm glad I bought this game, because it is a BLAST. The mechanic and gameplay are surprisingly solid, and the characters have very interesting and unique movesets. I mostly agree with the criticism about the art direction, story, and roster (no X-Men?!), but the superb gameplay is what makes this game a major win. I hope to see future MVC titles implement some of the gameplay mechanics from this game.

A mixed bag, but like a well-timed assist, its gameplay is where it truly shines. While the cast, balancing, and art direction aren't exactly the stuff of legends, mechanically, the game screams "MvC" in every punch, kick, and hyper combo. The 2v2 format brings back the frantic action we love, and the Infinity Stone mechanic adds a layer of strategy that really sets it apart from its predecessors.
The character roster is smaller than MvC2's, and some fan-favorites are missing. The art style? Well, let's just say Chun-Li's face had its own patch notes. Balancing can feel a bit off at times, with certain characters cough Dante cough dominating the meta. But when you're mid-battle, pulling off insane combos with a perfect tag-in, all those gripes seem to fade away.
For fans of the Marvel vs Capcom series, Infinite is a must-try. It's not perfect, but it has that chaotic, fast-paced energy that defines the franchise. If you love MvC, this game will scratch that itch. Just think of it like picking low-tier characters and still managing to win: not perfect, but oh-so-satisfying!

it's meh. out of all the marvel vs capcom games, this is the weakest by far. got it on sale and i think that's the best choice. either play ultimate marvel vs capcom 3 or get the arcade classics
So, I started playing it. First training mode. Rocket felt good, but something feels....off. The roster feels off, the models feel off. I liked Rocket's move set, it feels like Marvel vs Capcom from a control standpoint but somehow.....it just feels wrong. Like a giant Xmen and Amaterasu/other Capcom favs gaping hole. Oh....and something is off with Chung Li. I welcome some additions like Jedah. The plastic-y look of some of the models feels off. Some DO look good, but...not the whole roster. I would give this one a pass for fans and stick with Ultimate.
I had a blast. The negatives of this game re completely overblown. Its great.

Grab this on sale when you can. I will say it isn't a good as previous titles but the story and modernization bring a new element to the game. It leans more into what a marvel vs capcom collaboration could be vs what it has been. I for one welcome it at the cheaper price paid and I had fun. I was wrapped up in the story and taken for a fan service ride.
