In this mode, you will experience a variety of background stories not touched upon in the game’s original Arcade Version. Discover the truth about KOF’s “Ash Saga” and its secrets through the eyes of the main character, Ash Crimson, and oth[/i]er characters who were not directly participating in the tournament. Your decisions and battle results may lead you to discovering new story elements; try out all the different options and every scene!
・NETWORK:
"THE KING OF FIGHTERS XIII Steam Edition" now features vastly improved netcode that will provide you with the most comfortable online experience yet! The new netcode features improved communication speeds between you and your opponent, and also tailors your online experience according to your PC environment!
“THE KING OF FIGHTERS XIII Steam Edition” features three different types of ONLINE VERSUS Matches, allowing players to challenge other rivals worldwide in endless and intense battles:
‐ “Ranked Match”: fight under specified regulations, and your results will be reflected in the rankings.
- “Player Match”: playing in this mode will not affect your results. You can fight against others casually.
- “Friend Match”: invite online players and challenge them through this mode for heated competition!
・MISSION:
Tackle three different kinds of missions in this mode, and improve your skills!
- “TIME ATTACK”: Defeat all CPU opponents in the shortest time you can.
- “SURVIVAL”: Select a character and fight your way through as many CPU opponents as you can.
- “TRIAL”: In this mode, each character has 10 tasks, which mainly focus on combos. By the time you complete all 10 tasks, you will have mastered some combos for that character.
・TUTORIAL:
Rose Bernstein, hostess of the tournament, will teach you the basic techniques as well as explain the gauges and their uses. First time KOF players should start here to get used to the game.
・CUSTOMIZE:
This mode allows you to edit your online profile and change character color palette. You can create a team to use online, add icons collected while playing, or enter a preset message that you want to use in your profile. For each character, you can make up to five custom color patterns. Show off your personality on the worldwide stage!
・OPTION:
A “GRAPHICS OPTION” feature, allowing the players to switch between different frame rates and simplify backgrounds, has been newly added.

This is a hidden gem.
Combat system is pretty damn tight.
2D sprite graphics don't get much better than this.
Anti-hero protagonists don't get much more charismatic than this.
I think it's worth giving it a try, even nowadays.

It's very best fighting games....I like this game...
Surprisingly a great game for casuals, besides arcade. you have story mode, you can customize each characters colors. The only problem is the tutorial is horrible, it really doesn't teach a beginner anything.

Probably by far the best 2D KOF ever made even though the roster is a bit light compared to its predecessors.
It's a lovely game.
Definitely love the visuals of the game, and the mechanics the allows for the awesome combos and the characters. The online play is bad however. I hope SNK updates the steam edition with some Roll back netcode.

the last King of Fighters with old style moves and graphics (but updated) - GREAT!
Surprisingly, my first time with this title. Excellent, what i am calling "1180p" fighters. There's an optional resolution that runs the game great just above 1080. Looks Great on my 1440 monitor.
Great fighting game, don't buy it here. The recent console rereleases on PS/Switch have rollback netcode, while the PC version still has delay based netcode from 2011.

I'm stupid for forgetting to ever write a review for this game after all the years.
This is not just the most beautiful and detailed looking sprite based fighting game but I'd argue the most visually stunning game ever made. So beautiful in fact, the devs nearly went bankrupt due to the expensive visuals this game has in their characters and backgrounds.
Where the fuck is the rollback update SNK?

one word for this game “KOF series at its finest"
This game has a very stunning 2D sprite design such as character, backrgound stage, UI, skill effect are perfectly designed as well as the movement is very fluid and responsive. besides the crazy hard combo trial (I mean that's the interesting point of KOF XIII and I'm sure you guys reading this also agree that it's not a flaw) the combo linking in this game is very satisfying I never thought that completing one combo trial can be this rewarding.
If you are really into fighting games especially 2D fighting you should try this game at least once in your life.

I have KOF XV, Street Fighter 6, as well as Tekken 8 and several other top tier fighting games. What really makes XIII special is how good character control is. It's so smooth and reads the inputs better than many newer games. For a very casual player like me, and not a fighting game fanatic with decades of experience, it's an easy game to pick up and enjoy. Graphically, it shows it's age as a 2D, compared to the crisp lines of GG Strive. It still is a beautiful game and the best 2D KOF, as far as I'm concerned.
This game refuse to run, no matter how many times I uninstall the game and reinstall. Nothing seems to work, SNK please patch the game to get it to work.

This is a really great fighting game, the visuals are amazing, arcade and cutscenes are cool, and customization is very nice. However, what is holding back this game is that it doesn't have rollback netcode, so online is terrible. It lags a lot and causes issues. But other than that this game is great and characters are fun. Just PLEASE add rollback.

This should have been a positive review however since there's no news about updating this one to KoF 13 Global Match, here we are.
Otherwise, it's the best looking 2D fighting game. It's also one with the most insane trials around.
And not showing input in trial mode is making a hard task near impossible to figure out if you're a beginner. The good thing is that those combo are kind of useless in match, the bad thing is that while they show you what's possible, it doesn't really teach you what's to prioritize.
Anyway, this still makes it one of the better game to learn a new pad/stick/leverless control scheme.
STEAM DECK PLAYERS: Simply go to settings and "force" proton experimental.
This is an outstanding FoFXIII. It runs and looks fantastic. Some of these sprites are the best in SNK history. If you love SNK or KoF, this is for you.
this game is trash like all the other snk games. I'm not satisfied with such repetitive, small move lists.

I love this game, but it does not play well on newer hardware. For anybody who has a top end computer or if it's just not running initially AFTER you boot it and it's stuck at a loading screen, you have to find an old hard drive UNDER 1TB of space (Preferably 500GB) and install it there. You may also have to start it in windowed mode by going to the game preferences and typing -w. It will work after those two steps are done and something to keep in mind for other older titles as well.
If I didn't love this game so much I would have not recommended it.

and while the game has high resolution spritework a lot of characters and stages look aestetically unpleasing
that aside its good enough that its worth getting on sale to try it out
and it has one of my favourite intro cinematics of any fighting game and one of my favourite menu themes
the mp balance isnt too good however and there arent that many characters, but its still fun to play
it was my first real fighting game so i have a bit of nostalgia for it

ps. IMPORTANT: keep in mind that this game runs on uncapped framerate, this means that if you use a monitor with more than 60 fps the game wont run at the proper speed, you can adjust this by doing the following:
Right click on the game in the steam library, select properties->launch options -> type in: -r
That should fix the framerate issue
