Recently cleared! Not only 100%'d in terms of achievements but also sought out all the hidden items in the stages. Most of the playtime listed was spent doing that, for what its worth.
So, I am someone who is basically connected at the hip to the Mega Man franchise in terms of fandom, and have spent a rather unhealthy amount of time in said fandom.
Giga Girl is "Mega Man with serial numbers filed off", complete with stage selects and "Bosses directly drop weapons". Unlike other MM-likes on steam, which often give a priority to graphics, I'd say Giga Girl struggles with first impressions. The screenshots and key art isn't all that enticing. And that's a shame, as it's a pretty solid, if with a few bits of jank in places, Mega Man-Like. I had fun, and I am actually giving it a recommend!
If you're coming in from Mega Man - here's the key comparisons with Mega Man:
I'd say in terms of complexity, the stage layouts are on par with Mega Man 2. She lacks the movement and charge options of later games.
Her Boomerang is the main weapon, a weapon that only allows one shot on screen but is reasonably effective offensively, and pretty damn devastating when attacking using a combination of close range and rapid fire.
Unlike Mega Man, Giga Girl has way more limitations with health, ammo (the latter of which is somewhat detrimental in places but the former just reduces damage variance of enemies and bosses.)
Finally this game has some absolutely strange water physics - more typical for platformers, water is very limiting on the player and WILL take some time to get used to.
It's consistant, but also very strange.
The weapons dropped from bosses have some interesting utilities in spite of how basic a lot of them are, and I just wish ammo wasn't so low, it really hampers how much you get to experiment with them.
That, along with some odd hitbox dissonance (it's not terrible, but it is noticeably not int he player's favour.) are probably my two biggest detriments in this game.
But this game is a recommend! There's plenty of positives!
The game controls just fine, with the default Boomerang offering enough additional nuance to set Giga Girl apart from her inspiration.
Outside of the Air Man-inspired stage, which is one long platforming trek over a death pit, and the Fortress stages probably warranting at least another checkpoint, the stages end up being fun to traverse. There's enough stage gimmicks to mix things up and enemy variety is 'good enough' to not feel you run into repetitive setups. Game encourages replay with the bonus items, although as a jank-complaint, the exit stage option is more or less useless, as it doesn't save item collection even if the stage has been cleared.
But the two real standouts for me are the music and boss fights.
Much of the music in this game just *cooks*. I will be listening to some of these tracks outside of gameplay (they're in the game folder, for what its worth) Real Commodore 64 vibes.
Finally, I actually just dig the boss fights in this game! They tend to have some pretty engaging patterns, and going in Buste.. er, Boomerang only, results in some tense but nevertheless satisfying encounters.
I'd also say the fortress guardians here tend to land better here than they did in the original first 3 Mega Man games. Benefits of not being tied down to early NES game limitations I suppose.
It's a shame the graphics look so amateurish. it's a bad first impression, but there's a fun little platformer if you're willing to look past that, and I'm always down for Mega Man likes.
But it IS a Mega Man-like, and I think that will largely determine your enjoyment. Do you like Mega Man? Are you prepared to put up with a smidgen more jank than a modern MM fangame?
It's like, a whopping £1.99. I got my money's worth, and I'll probably stream the game at some point.
It's a recommend.
A very cute Mega Man clone. It's stupidly difficult, as many Mega Man fan games tend to be, with some less than useful weapons and questionable stage design decisions. Using a boomerang as the base weapon is a really interesting concept, though. If you've got someone in your life who would like to see more action games with female heroines, here's one!
A fun Mega Man style clone. It pays homage through gameplay and frustration. The gameplay feels like classic Mega Man. Borrowing some concepts of classic Mega Man games and putting its own twist on the concepts. The default weapon Boomerang is your go to weapon. It's the weapon I used the most through my entire playthrough and outside of opening up a few secret areas with the other weapons, you can basically progress with just the boomerang.
The frustration comes from some areas where enemies are placed in such a way that you can easily be pushed into an instant death pit or spike ball. In some cases, this requires a little trial and error before you'll successfully progress. Having played the Mega Man games extensively before playing Giga Girl, I was better prepared for these instances and had a basic idea beforehand on how to tackle these scenarios. Now for someone who never has played a Mega Man game before playing this, they might rage quit before advancing very far.
Difficulty wise I would say it’s slightly easier than your typical Mega Man. The music is nice and fits well and the game has a satisfying ending. It’s not a very long game, but finding the correct way into secrets areas could extend your playtime a bit.
Overall, it’s pretty fun just like the source material that it pays homage too.
THE BEST SPIRITUAL SUCCESSOR TO THE NES MEGAMAN
character differences: combat has a new feel with the boomerang its very powerful single attack adn comes back to you, character cannot jump as high, a lot of enemies are planned for your advance so be careful moving forward
fixed many annoyances experienced in the orignal megaman 1-6 such as:
-enemies killing you without warning over death pits
-birds dropping bombs infintely for some sections
-invisible blocks are now regulated to sections you can fuckin see so you can figure out the pattern from a safe location
-some enemies being only vulnerable to boss items you may or may not have yet
The creator really worked on removing the annoyances of the original series while not just outright removing them.
LSTs begin the everyone one best clone copy from the megaman series I enjoy playing it instead 8 bosses 5 & boy their hard as $#¡™ everyone them had to fight the weakest to beat have there's only one part of level had issue with is the underwater level there raindow jar flowing which I swear u will die a lot you'll find secret items but need bosses weapons & will b hidden place I heard this game from a trend i for right away
A great game, I hope it gets a sequel.
Mega man + Giga girl = love
I don’t think this game was playtested at all before release.
Giga Girl screams retro nostalgia. It promotes itself as a game inspired by classic Mega Man games. It looked retro, it looked spunky and it had no reviews when I first discovered it. I figured why not? I love Mega Man games, and I missed playing them. After spending a good amount of time trying Giga Girl I am left disappointed. Giga Girl, while inspired by Mega Man, doesn’t have the gameplay to back it up. At first I thought it was retro hard. I laughed it off and kept trying. Then I thought, it may be be one of those really retro games that demanded you memorize level layouts. After discovering enemies are somewhat spawn and act somewhat randomly I ruled that out. Then it set in. Giga Girl is just a bad game.
Giga Girl is just a frustrating and cheap experience wrapped in a nostalgic package.
Expect unavoidable projectiles or enemies jumping in from different angles off screen. Think about this. Enemies do not behave the same during repeat game sessions. Most spawn at the same areas, but how they move and act differs. That means you can’t even prepare for the cheap attacks even if you know they’re coming. The enemies might just jump in a little higher, lower, or faster. It’s maddening. In one area a group of birds spawn randomly near a large enemy who just so happens to spit out projectiles…again randomly.
It gets even worse because the colliders seem off. Enemies look like they don’t hit you somehow do damage.
Want another bad level design example? How about Giga Girl’s rotating platforms. They rotate randomly. At times, platforming seems almost impossible. But wait it gets even worse! Sometimes they have enemies on top of them. These enemies shoot you off screen, but they rotate in such a way that you cannot kill them. BUT IT GETS EVEN WORSE! Sometimes these platforms overlap. You’ll find yourself rotating into an enemy leading to yet another cheap death.
Giga Girl is a lesson in how NOT to do a retro platformer.

Faithful Mega Man Clone
Giga Girl is a lot of fun and plays similarly to the original Mega Man series. The difficulty feels balanced, as the levels aren’t too long and are packed with some secrets. For a game that costs $3, it sure feels worth more than that. The sound track is really energetic and memorable.
Pros
-Responsive Controls
-Fun levels
-Secrets and refrences to other games
-Faithful mega man clone
-Tough bosses
-Costs $3
Cons
-Doesn't have some of the later features of the Mega Man series like slide
-Not enough weapon energy for the boss weapons

45 minute quick impressions:
This is a simple jump-and-shoot platformer. You start with a boomerang and get another weapon after beating the first boss.
+ Graphics are simple, but decent for the style and price of the game.
+ Music is good, but a bit repetitive.
+ Controls are good enough.
+ The boomerang is fast and fun to use.
+ It's three bucks.
- The levels are long, including 2 mini-boss (?) fights, with no checkpoints that I can tell until right before the main boss of the level.
- There are many places where enemies unavoidably hit you, unless you know they are coming, or inch ahead slowly.
~ The one boss I got to was pretty easy.
~ You only have 3 lives to finish a level. There is 1 extra life on the first level that is always there after dying, so you effectively have infinite lives on level 1, up until the boss.
~ Escape insta-quits the game.
I only see 5 levels on the map. The first level took me about 15 minutes to learn and beat. I assume the others will take longer.
If you don't mind dying a lot to learn where things jump out at you. it's reasonably fun for the price.
A better Mega Man clone than Mighty No. 9
World is safe again
