The Danish government wanted to annex the duchy of Schleswig to the Danish kingdom while the Prussian government, for internal political and strategic reasons, wanted Schleswig to finally became a part of Germany.
A key element of Denmark's war strategy was the blockade of Germany's Baltic sea ports, thereby disrupting German overseas trade and hindering Prussian naval operations in support the Prussian army. The supreme commander of the Prussian army insisted that the navy attempt to breach the blockade.

Ironclads: Schleswig War 1864 is... an interesting idea but awful execution. The game is incredibly boring with little to do and those few things you can do cost you so much time that its not worth doing it. Its just not fun. At certain points it even feels unfinished. Its sad because its a really interesting idea. I mean come on fucking Schleswig? Schleswig-Holstein or whatever? The lan that Denmark owned before Prussia/North German Confederation/Germany/Whatever took it from them? The last time i saw any of these names or this event was when i played Victoria 2! And that was a while ago! These devs even made a game about Tsushima. You know that battle where Japan kicked the Russian Empire's ass in the pacific to the point where Russia just got rid of the idea of having a Pacific Fleet at all because of Japan? Yeah! THAT battle! These guys made a game about it! You don't see that very often. But if its anything like this then... Its probably not fun just like this one... And thats the worst part. These guys seem to make interesting stuff but the execution is fucking awful.
+The game runs well and looks ok.
+Interesting idea.
+Kind of realistic? In the sense that "wow this is really old naval gunnery so i can't hit shit unless i'm at point blank ranges and even then i'll still probably miss."
+Some of the ships are interesting at least.
-I like realism. I really do. I do enjoy realistic games but... In here the realism kind of works against the game. Everything is... so... slow. I looked at the other reviews and everyone was complaining about the same thing and i was like "duh its supposed to be ships and speed and gunnery and whatever else you have wasn't good or even average back in the day" then i played the game and realised wow its so slow and there is nothing to do while you wait for things to happen that it just becomes boring.
-Limited amount of ships. Worst of all the ships are well the same for both Prussia and Denmark? They don't have special ships from what i can see? Kind of dissapointing. The only thing that changes is the flag they fly... And i guess the names too.
-No tactics. At all. You just set the speed, press "fire" or "hold fire", turn your ships and you get close to the enemy. Guns will fire on their own as long as the fire order is given. You can't choose targets your ship will fire at the closest one. If you have like 3 ships in the same group you have 1 lead ship and the rest will mimic and do everything the lead ship does. I mean i guess its realistic so good job on that but... Incredibly boring.
-No actual damage models. All you'll ever see is maybe a section like the aft i think its called the back end of the ship will slightly go underwater due to flooding. And maybe you'll see some fire on the deck. But thats it. It doesn't really do anything. In almost 3 hours of playtime i haven't even seen a ship being sunk. I just saw them take too much damage and retreat.
-The game modes are incredibly boring. You can either 1v1 against an enemy AI. Just choose units for the enemy to control, choose units for yourself to control and fight. In here you don't even choose countries the AI will fly a red flag and you'll fly a green one. No Prussian or Danish flags in this game mode. And then there is the "actual" game mode i guess. You have money, buy ship, put them into groups, go and fight, if your ships survive you get to repair them and buy more i guess then go onto the next battle. Its so repetative so boring.
-Sounds are... repetative. It hurts my ears.
-Gameplay is boring and repetative. Incredibly slow. Its supposed to be realistic but its just boring.
-UI is meh. You choose speed, rudder direction and thats it. Guns will fire on their own, you can't choose targest or anything either.
-The game feels unfinished at times. Like for example when you buy a ship you can see the guns it has. Most of the ships use a really specific way to name and identify the guns. But then there is one ship that says something like "gun_id_whatever the fuck" or something? Like it was just a really slight thing i noticed for a few seconds before starting a match but... I can't get it out of my mind... I don't even remember what i read... I can't even remember how the "normal, finished" guns were named... Its just so blurry and i stopped playing like less then 30 minutes ago... What the fuck happened??
Interesting idea. Awful execution. Its so forgettable, its so boring, its so repetative and the never ending cannon shots hurt my ears. I mean i guess its somewhat realistic so good job on that but... damn... maybe you should have made a more arcade-y game... I got this in a 90% discount for 1,80 Turkish Lira and i still feel like i paid too much to have 3 hours of my life stolen. And the full price is... 18 TURKISH LIRA? FOR THIS?! I'm sorry but no... Not recommended. Not even for free.

This game is okay, I got it for 99 cents back in the day. Below $5 the game might be worth a look.
Very simple gameplay, buy your ships and drive towards the enemy so the AI shoots....but that's the problem. You just drive the ships and hope the atrocious AI will shoot them. If I could manually fire the guns myself, this wouldn't be an issue,
but look it was 99 cents so I can't say I was ripped off....but just know thats how the game works before you make a decision
Better off avoiding this one. Got boring pretty quickly.
this is surely the most innapropriate game for action lovers, but I liked it, I recommend it to patient players (battles can be as long as 2 h ), i recommend buying the ironclads 2, it's better, but this game is ok, graphics are not bad at all but the interface is not very beautiful
It's pretty bad, and that's disappointing considering this is one of very few games on this subject matter. You basically just steer your ships around the map, watching the AI gunners do their thing. Got boring extremely quickly.
Better off avoiding this one.
