Amazing game. The systems, controls, the inside of the rocket, etc is just so good. Highly recommended for those rocket fans. For the developers, I highly recommend to add more missions and other rockets since theres only 4 missions. Its a very nice and realistic game and I highly recommend this game since it's also a VR supported game. Love it!
i would love to recommend this game tho i cant as on my hp reverb g2 all you get is a black screen tho works on my meta quest 2 and as the reverb g2 is my main headset the game gets a 3 out of 5 rateing from me due to this bug with using the reverb g2 and after talking to some others it seems that is bug is with any headset that use's windows mixed reality with this game
It's such a bad decision to force a player wait for a real 5 minutes while nothing is going on
Kinda short but very educational I enjoyed most of all the verbal communication between the capsule, NASA and the Recovery Teams. Hopefully the series continues. UPDATE: This game has been abandoned this is an unfinished game and it will never be finished what you see is what you will ever get.
I love this sim. The audio and atmosphere. I play it over and over. Please do a similar for the space shuttle and apollo. This is so well done. Thank you, my fave sim by far
Underdeveloped.
Valve Index
The main problem I ran into with this VR game is that it doesn't have a control scheme for the Valve Index (despite the store page listing it as supporting the Valve Index, although whether this stirctly implies support of the Index controllers is not clear), so I have no confidence that I can interact with the game properly.
The first menu was so far above me I had to crane my neck to see it. I tried to do a mission, and it hinted to interact with a checklist, but the checklist simply fell through the spacecraft when I approached it with my hand.
When I looked at editing the buttons on the Steam VR program, the bindings simply list the button presses - not what they actually do. You can rebind the B button to perform the function of the A button, but it won't tell you what the A button does in the game. If there was a button to get back to the menu then I have no idea what it was.
Whether it works with other VR sets or not I don't know, but it was promising to see the developer acknowledge my issue with the Index controllers.
Gameplay
Trudging through desktop mode just to see what I'm missing by not having it work in VR - there are multiple breaks of several minutes each as if it was a real mission. You can gain immersion through realism, but there's a certain point where pointless realism erodes the fun, so I think it should have a skip time option (like the Shuttle game did all the way back in 1992). The strength of the game is the immersion of matching the radio chatter with visuals and an interactive cockpit.
Quality
It has only four of the six manned Mercury missions, and of those four there's visuals issues where you don't see certain details like smoke or spent stages out the window. Some texture resolutions are quite low. On one menu the music drowned out the broadcast of Kennedy's historic speech. In the spacecraft the cabin fan sometimes comes on despite being switched off, and it sounds like a sample that doesn't loop well. I can't find a way to save or quit, and the desktop version launches SteamVR.
Summary
The Apollo 11 VR game was more cinematic (and polished), so I'd go for that one instead. But having read a book on the Mercury Project - this is a hugely interesting moment of history that would only need a bit of fleshing out with quality to be appreciated.
This is a great simulator for the space nerds like myself who can overlook some of its rough edges - the more you know about the Mercury missions the sim depicts, the more enjoyment you'll get out of it. It's the work of a solo developer, so a certain level of polish is understandably lacking, but it gets enough right that it is definitely worth experiencing.
I don't have a VR headset, so this is solely from the perspective of someone playing it with a desktop setup. There's no way that I've found to change the controls or use a joystick, so you have to make do with the keyboard controls. This isn't a space sandbox like KSP - it's a hardcore systems simulation following the exact flight trajectories of the Mercury missions. Just like the real astronauts, your control is limited to the reaction control system for orientation, and that's about it. Abbreviated checklists are provided with an optional "helper" function which highlights the next step, and although sometimes the checklists can be buggy, the mission almost always continues as long as you've checked the most important steps. The countdowns and preflights are also abbreviated but still long (circa 10 minutes which is mostly waiting), although there is an option to speed up time which thankfully returns to 1x speed whenever important voice lines start. Almost all of the important switches and gauges are fully functional and you can see the impact of flipping an incorrect switch in real-time. A few options are missing, like the ability to change the filters or magnification of the periscope, red filters for the cockpit lights, etc, but these are minor omissions that speak to the level of detail the sim already exhibits.
One thing that can't go unmentioned is the glorious sound design. This sim would be nothing without it. The missions are synced up to the actual mission audio from the astronauts and the various control centers, and as long as you're not screwing around, they're accurate down to a few seconds. Hearing the astronauts joking with each other and getting through stressful moments creates an INCREDIBLE level of immersion. Due to the real-life astronauts' rigorous reporting procedures, you can follow along with their exact actions and procedures. A highlight for me was after splashdown of MR-4 where Gus Grissom reads out every switch and gauge condition and you can truly appreciate the accuracy of the cockpit. Unfortunately this does tend to highlight the sometimes-inaccurate gauge readings, and those which are non-functional like the descent speed indicator, but for the most part it's a thrill to follow along as Alan Shepard checks the pitch, yaw, and roll axes of Freedom 7 and imagine what it must have been like. Electrical hums, fans, and switch clicks are dead on. The ignitions are very loud and engine noise gradually grows quieter as you leave the atmosphere. On lift-off and re-entry you can hear the panels vibrating and bumping into each other. In my opinion, sound is one of the most important elements of immersive sims and this is superb.
The first four Mercury missions are modeled in their entirety. The ~5 hour Mercury Atlas missions include both the realistic 3 orbit and an abbreviated 1 orbit variation. It clearly seems designed for the 1 orbit version, since there's no mission audio during the latter two orbits - it would be nice if those audio logs were included for the longer flights. No 35-hour-long, 22 orbit Faith 7 mission either, rats! There isn't a lot of "gameplay" here. Just like the real pilots, you're mostly along for the ride. The astronauts were also busy conducting experiments, taking photos, and recording anthropometric data which we don't get to do in the sim, and their workload was very high trying to cram as much science into these short hops as possible. These tasks may not seem fun to many, but for VR and immersion I can imagine they would make a big difference - taking photos out of the window at a certain stage of the orbit, for instance.
Some people like to find the limits of simulations by doing deliberately unrealistic things, and here there's nothing you can really do to get a bad outcome - you can mess up badly, but you'll never die or crash. As a test I did everything wrong - fired the retro rockets in an incorrect orientation, went nose-first into re-entry (the capsule rights itself), and shut down all the electrical systems but both chutes and the landing bag still deployed safely. You can't die from overheating, depressurizing the cabin, or depowering. But that's not really what the sim is about - as a Mercury simulator it's more about replicating how the missions actually transpired rather than experimenting with what could have gone wrong. Even if it didn't affect the outcome, I was still realistically micromanaging the systems and juggling suit cooling with cabin humidity when I flew MA-6 because I wanted to experience the real challenges NASA faced. As long as you stay within the confines of common sense, the illusion of the simulation is excellent.
Hopefully that gives a clear picture of what this sim offers. It still needs work, it's definitely not for everyone, but if you love the history of the space race and systems/flight simulation, it's a welcome break from the fantasy options that are available and in my opinion is unmatched for immersion. If you're still unsure, the game has an excellent demo which will give you a good idea of whether or not this sim is for you.
With all of the voice recordings and orgasmic sound design this is a steal at 10 dollars. The only thing it needs now is just simply to have the fuses on the left of right actually clickable between 1, off, and 2. Another quality of life for pc users, making the middle mouse button the look around button and then making left click be up or left on a switch and right click be down or right.
I really enjoy playing this game in VR. If you want to get a feel for the astronaut's point of view of a Mercury mission, you have a few to choose from.
Great spaceflight sim! A bit rough around the edges, but the basic thrill of leaving the atmosphere is worth the occasional awkwardness of flipping some switches.
great game need a Go For Launch: Apollo for sure updates are slow, but to be expected with a single developer, also should add RTX if possible that would be awesome and make the game look that much better than it already does, cant wait for the next update, and to the dev, keep up the good work.
Considering this space sim is being developed by a single developer is amazing. it's a cool sim that's getting better and better since it was 1st launched. I turn to this sim after spending time on my various flight simulators because it so good and also educational.
The graphics are very good, and with the new introduction guide that the developer has recently released to help the newcomers get to grips with the controls etc. It's well worth supporting this lone developer rewarding their hard work. I would score it 8.5 so far out of 10. It can only get better and better over time with more space craft and missions being introduced. Good work so far and very modestly priced.
This is amazing! It is early access but as someone who is a hardcore simmer, I really appreciate the masterpiece this has become. This should be a must have for anyone who enjoyed Orbiter, Re-entry, DCS, etc! I actually find the graphics better than Re-Entry for VR. I plan on doing a better more in depth review as more material is released but for now there is no reason not to pick this up!
Keep up the good woirk! This porject really needs to be finished!!!!
I really can't tell you how happy I am that I found this sim. It does still have some development ahead of it, but WOW!
I had been waiting for a serious sim for some historical NASA flights in VR. This is the first to fit the bill. Now I can fly one of the spacecraft I love in VR.
Keep up the great work. I hope that you eventually expand into sims of Gemini and Apollo.
This sim is a dream come true for me.
I have been watching this for sometime and purchased it awhile back in order to support this lone developer. There was some down time and I am glad to see that he has released an update. I am quite impressed! I have recently picked up an Oculus and this SIm performed amazingly with it!
Great job sir!
Go For Launch: Mercury is still in early access, so you can only fly three of the planned seven Mercury missions and some features are incomplete and/or buggy. But if you are looking for a glimpse into what it would have been like to have been a Mercury astronaut, this PC simulator is for you. If you also have VR such as Vive or Rift, even better.
Anyone complaining about it being boring because all you do is flip a few switches and listen to an audio track has to understand that a simulator by definition tries to simulate reality and the Mercury astronauts had a lot less to do than the later Gemini and Apollo missions. As it stands, you are supposed to flip the right switches to the right position in the right order at the right time per real world procedures. The audio is from the real missions. What could be better for fans of project Mercury than to follow the real world operating procedures in parallel with the audio track from the actual missions?
If you don't like hard core pc simulators or don't have any interest in recreating all of the Project Mercury missions, then this game probably isn't for you. But if you do, this game is awesome!
Nothing short of amazing. Really makes you feel like you’re there, making history. It is definitely a simulator like no other, with lovingly detailed capsules and controls. Highly recommended for gamers interested in science, space, and history. Replicated the era that put America in space and ultimately on the moon. Very well done!!
nice game.
Pros - very good looking controls.
- sound effects excellent, take off engines really loud and believable.
- loved the radio that plays JFKs speech at beginning
- good music to set the mood
- the missions i played felt very realistic, i liked the instruments highlighted i need use to assist.
cons - only 2 missons are available as i write, but it is a early access game so thats fine for me.
- i had to use the escape key to close game, no end of game button that i saw.
- better settiings needed so i can turn of assitance if i want to. (unless i did something wrong), then i played the
DEMO I had to figure it out for myself which i liked.
conclusion - Very nice simulator, realistic, i enjoyed alot. not sure that younger people who invariably suffer from ADS
will find this game fast enough.. The DEV needs to release more content asap, To keep all happy.
Very immersive simulation with the actual audio recordings putting you right into the pilot's seat for a replay of the founding missions of today's space program. Beautiful graphics, especially the orbital environment, showing this is clearly a labour of love. Most of the constellations are in the right place and clearly recognizable as are the coastlines which are synced well to the audio recordings.
Still alot of work ahead, but for space buffs, this is a must have IMO. I'm not sure that it's for everyone out there as there is no fast forward or save functionality yet (orbits are realtime for the most part) and its not exactly a "game" but more of a historical thrill ride. That said...Don't mess up your checklists :)
Great educational value as well if you want to get someone interested in the space program.
Highly recommended for support.
Keep up the stellar work JL.
GFL:M scratches an itch that I didn't know I had. If you want an authentic simulation of the Mercury spacecraft, and all the challenges and complexity that it brings, look no further. Having played KSP with realism mods for a few years, I've been looking for more true to life simulations of the early space programs, and this doesn't fail to deliver.
There's clearly a lot of content yet to be added, but what we do have is already brilliant, and I'm looking forward to future updates.
For an alpha version, Go for Launch is very good! Though a lot of content remains to be added, I've found the existing framework to be excellent. I love space sims and have always wanted a sim that covered the early space program, such as Mercury and Gemini. I am glad to finally have one that does so. I can't wait to see how the development progresses.
For some reason, Sheppards flight has always been the one i wanted to take. It always inspired me how much guts it took to be the first American to climb into the Mercury Capsule, especially after seeing the previous rockets explode!
I have seen Mercury capsules, Redstone and Atlas boosters at KSC and this sim captures the look perfectly. Highly detailed Cockpits, Exteriors and a checklist to help new players along makes this a great sim for those who like the Early Days of NASA!
It does still need work. Some features are not yet working, even on the 2 missions included. However its mainly the very final landing stages and parachutes. Its playable, but i do look forward to Splashdown and Recovery in a future update. Hopefully, One day after the full game is completed we will see Gemini and Apollo expansions or mods, The Devs do really great work and i can't wait to see what comes next!
All in All, Its worth the cost to me and if this type of sim interests you i highly recommend trying it!
This is clearly a work in progress as you would expect from an Early Access title but what is already here is breathtaking. Highly detailed spacecraft, fully interactive, historically accurate, good graphics. Hard to believe it's made by one developer.
Don't expect a finished title. Do expect a labor of love.
