The games a cute little 3D platformer about a sweet cylinder shaped robot. I did enjoy it, honestly. But its short enough to be a tech demo, and plays like one too. Worth it if you can get it for a great sale price. Cannot recommend paying anywhere near full price.
It was a purchase I made because I trusted my friend's reccomendation. We didn't know what we were getting into. This is..... this is like someones first game or something. It's really bare. We had a good laugh but I didn't think it was something even children could enjoy fully.
There was no cool mechanic like scrapping something to add on to your robot, there was barely any scrap to be honest......
This is a pretty basic but fairly decent platformer. By basic I mean it has pretty simple old school mechanics, but it doesn't really needs more than that. And it has a really nice story too. So if you're looking for a chill and fun 3D platform game this one is for you.
Gameplay-wise there isn't much. 3D action platformer with awful controls, uninspired enemies and item collection, bland story, non-existent puzzles. Avoid.
Scrap Garden is a fun, but short and easy game.
You can finish it in a couple of hours, but it isn't necessarily a bad thing. The levels are very diverse and not long enough to get boring.
The protagonist is pretty cute and the story, while not complex, actually isn't bad at all.
If you are new to 3D platformers or to platformers in general, I would definitely recommend to start with this game. It's not too hard, so you won't likely get frustrated and abandon it. And it also can be finished in one evening, so you don't need a lot of free time.
I really wish I could download the soundtracks; I found this one soundtrack in particular in the very beginning to be the most relaxing out of the bunch.
Otherwise it's a neat story about power and its side effects. I find it rather relatable to the real life case.
I got this game during the pancake week sale. Its a neat little platformer, but it is very rough around the edges and doesn't do anything new. I was able to beat the whole game in two hours.
What a great little platform game so far.
Update! This Game would have had a good review, But a known Achievement that doesn't pop still doesn't.
I have wasted a good couple hours trying to get it to pop and it still wont!
Update,Update! finally got last hope to pop. Make sure you let the holos talk all the way through or it doesn't count which is silly, but at least i got there in the end!
This is a charming game and worth playing once....
My kids love "Robot goes donk." That's more or less the scale of the game: it's a fun, cute, harmless game that's fine for kids. It won't set your world on fire, but there's a worse way to spend a few bucks.
I appreciate the effort, it'd probably be better as a side scrolling 2D platformer though. Issues I've had include, pausing and jumping as soon as it's unpauased, my mouse doesn't lock onto the window, the camera is also sometimes difficult to move around because of that. Worth a buy if you get it for cheap. Also what's annoying is they put 77 Crystals on a level, it only takes 60 to open a cave and they take all of your crystals.
This is 3D adventure with every possible 3D adventure design mistakes made (again). We have : 1) Awful camera 2) Bad controls 3) Poor controller support 4) 3D jumping 5) 3D jumping with disappering platforms and camera killing player 6) Boring bosses with no mechanics explained in any way 7) PUSH X OR DIE
Frankly, i found a most of game quite nice. early City level is impressive and made with love and attention. Tilt-pan visual effect looks cool. Futher in game its getting worse, through. An this is most disappointing - this game could be good with better design.
Thee is bunch of relatively fun archivements to get, some of them is not trivial.
Game is generally pretty easy, witn tiny bits of unfairness and difficult bits which is difficult mosly due to bad camara and clunky controls. Most of enemies is besically same, just wait and jump to kill, no challenge except if its small closed location. Bosses is lazy nad annoying at most. Gorilla one is looking especially poor. Last boss is unexpectely hard, but again, its due bad controls and bad camera.
Should one buy it? Maybe, but dont expect much.
Scrap Garden looks like a fun game until you actually play it. It is a simplistic platformer with somewhat cute graphics, however, it lacks in almost every way from a development standpoint. It feels like the sort of thing a student would create for a high school programming class. And get a C+ on. The best word to describe it is "inexplicable".
The lore is almost interesting (if heavily flawed), but the implementation of the story line, characterizations, voice acting and general world design all manage to detract from what could have been a cute and interesting game. Nothing feels truly broken, though there are definitely some bad design elements that can add to player frustration. (Failing to educate the player on the simplistic combat system is a big negative.) The game inexplicably switches from somewhat open roaming to suddenly side-scroller or rail-runner at random.
The plot is a mishmash, almost as bad as the actual gameplay, with a world that somehow devolves from modern-style world where robots inexplicably act like people, to an overgrown post-apocalyptic paradise complete with primitives who, inexplicably, speak with a scottish accent. All in less than 50 years (?!) The main character speaks only in machine gibberish, though other robots, inexplicably, do not. It is defined and repeatedly reinforced that this character is the last robot (until suddenly it's not), and while it cannot feel cold, for example, inexplicably, it can feel scared, exuberant, or worried.
The narration, while not an actual part of the gameplay, makes the game somehow worse. First rule of game design is the same as in movies and books: Don't say it, SHOW it.
All around, not a recommended game. If you MUST play it, go for the free "prequel" and see if you like it.
Long story short:
+ Good story
+ Achievements working
+ 3-6h playtime
- Controls
- Price
Long version review:
Before buying i recommend to play Scrap garden the day before, it is like backstory and it is free based on same principes (controls, item collecting, enemies).
+ Story was enjoyable and for kids easy to understand (not much talking :D).
+ All achievements are working, took about 5 hours to achieve full, mostly because enemies kills.
+ Story can be completed in about 3 hours, depends on how much you explore levels.
- Controls are not the best you could wish, because combined with camera problems there are few locations that are bit harder to jump to.
- I bought it on sale and it was worth it, but full price feels a bit too much.
Extremely lackluster for a "Mostly Positive"-rated game. The story is promising at first but the boss fights are unimaginative, and in one case, an unforgiving series of quicktime events. The first boss fight is actually buggy--when the worm emerges, sometimes it changes its exit point to be directly under you. That one and a couple others require a frustrating amount of platforming to pick up and throw rocks.
The gameplay isn't interesting, and any mechanics or modes aren't explored very much. The enemies and spikes in the early game don't feel like they serve a useful purpose besides annoying the player. The exploration sequences are mainly "door is locked, find key, open door" and the puzzles are mostly "hit every button in this room exactly once to line up the lasers". The mine cart and hillslide sections are not all that fun, and there's even something that looks like a puzzle that you're not even permitted to get wrong.
Finally, the voice acting is unemotional--and I don't mean that in a positive way for robots--including the narrator. And I'm pretty sure Canny's sounds in the cutscenes are lifted from R2-D2.
I'm sorry, I have to be brutally honest with this one because it surprises me that it has mostly positive reviews.
This game is really bad. I found it unplayable honestly. It's boring, uninspired, unpolished, lacks direction, and I'm not even sure it qualifies as a game because you just kind of slowly hunker around with the most basic tool kit, a bad camera, and very little interaction with the world or it's lack of inhabitants. It isn't generally clear what you're supposed to do next and you keep hoping to find out what's happening and waiting for it to get better. I stopped playing when I got to the sand snake boss thing that popped out of nowhere. There didn't appear to be any way to get him to follow you and just felt random and stupid. I was waiting for this to get better and it showed no signs of it so I stopped wasting my time.
It's a shame because the visual style and presentation showed potential, but this feels more like someone's semester end project in game design school, rather than something that should have been published and marketed.
As far as 3D platformers go, it admittedly does feel a teeny tiny bit on the cheezy/clunky side---especially when it comes to dealing with enemies and boss battles.
The gameplay is often very simple, involving just a lot of traveling around the environment collecting scattered gems. BUT you do get some (extremely easy) physics puzzles, switch puzzles, beam direction puzzles, etc, here and there, which does help keep things fresh.
The narration and NPC voices are extremely corny, which may turn some people off (but may just remind other people of the 90s!). They can be skipped, but this may sometimes leave you confused about what you need to do to advance.
TLDR: Might feel a bit too rough for people who aren't super enthusiastic about the genre, but if you have a lot of nostalgia or enthusiasm for 3D platformers, this game is good enough quality to give you a pleasant little fix---especially if you've exhausted all other available options.
7) A classic, essential, and/or must-buy game that is absolutely worth full price.
6) A solid good game that is worth the full price.
5) A pretty good game that may or may not be quite worth full price.
4) An alright game, but opinions are likely to strongly differ on the game's value.
3) A bit rough, but with some interesting or redeeming qualities. Purchase with care!
2) Quite rough. You may find something to like, but brace yourself. Purchase with care!
1) Broken, unplayable, or otherwise impossible to recommend.
Sure, the environments are somewhat pretty, though certainly not impressive, and yes, it's a 3D platformer, which is definitely NOT a new trait to the platformer genre... so how in the world does that mix make Scrap Garden an award-winning indie game!? Nearly every aspect of this game is poorly designed and poorly implemented. Here are my main gripes:
Platforming elements consist of double-jumping onto everything with very sloppy controls. The platforming never changes, never gets more difficult, and never even attempts to do anything innovative.
Half of the boss fights require you to merely throw rocks at the boss's head. The other half just have you dodge a few attacks until you reach the point where the boss suddenly dies. Bosses are very poorly designed, both in method of beating them and in their clunky animations.
Puzzle elements are dreadfully unimaginative. Press switches in the indicated order, move a bunch of items into a box, or match the colored item to the same color switch. Very boring!
The camera view constantly positions directly overhead so you're always looking at the ground, or it positions so close to the robot that you can't see your surroundings.
Checkpoints are few and far between. The game is never difficult, but occasionally the sloppy controls will cause you to miss a jump or inadvertently get attacked. These mistakes may lead you to die, which forces you to restart the entire area. The game is not anywhere near good enough to want to play twice, and merely having to repeat the bland crystal collection is enough to make you resent the game if you die through little fault of your own.
Enemies indoors hide just out of sight around a corner so they hit you nearly every time. Enemies you can see outside can be easily killed by double jumping and falling straight down because they always stop directly underneath you (and all non-boss enemies are killed by jumping on them once). Later in the game enemies will pop out of boxes that you open, which can cause you to die and force you to restart the entire level.
The story is terrible, bland in content and full of errors within its own lore. Sometimes the story just rushes forward without preamble, like in the second area where you are rushed from a cutscene of an unexplained encounter with random natives to boss fight and then to a location you've never even seen before.
The voice narration is really bad.
Audio is extremely loud and cannot be adjusted or muted in-game.
So it took me barely 2.5 hours to complete this game.
The positive i can say is that it got the fundamental feel of a 3D platformer correct, as well as had a competent camera.
The bad, not particularly deep game mechanically, very short and there was some questionable decisions when it came to voice acting, as well as sound design.
This is obviously a small team who put this together, and so I can be very lax in my judgement however, there's just no way I can recommend this game for the asking price of 11$ (CAD).
This game might be worth it if you can get it for 2 or 3$, and you want to kill an afternoon.
Best of luck to the developers in the future.
This is a small, but fairly well-polished game. It mixes up the normal action with fun little mini-games, and the puzzles are never very difficult once you figure how to jump on critters. The plot is kind've fun (if silly), and keeps the game from getting stale.
Buy it on sale though, it only took me 2.2 hours to finish. (I didn't try very hard to hunt for all the trophies/achievements, and found 1/2 the trophies)
My only criticism is that, in some of the side-scrolling sequences, the double-jump is disabled w/o warning - so you might take a hit or two before you compensate.
NOTE: It's much, much better than the free version of the game.
Basically, this is a cute little game. It's short, it's not too challenging, and it has a nice storyline.
First, some drawbacks (for me personally):
- I must say the voice acting was a bit iffy -- but it was also entertaining to listen to (perhaps unintentionally). The English grammar was also a bit odd at times, but I imagine that wouldn't bother most people.
- The storyline lost me sometimes, though I don't know if that's because of an issue with the way it was written, with a hazy storyline in general, or my own inattentiveness.
- The puzzles weren't very challenging, so I would've liked a bit more in that regard (but this level of difficulty would probably be great for kids).
- The controls using a mouse and keyboard were a tad frustrating at times but not impossible.
- I felt like there was little incentive to collect more red crystals than required, and it was a bit disappointing to see all the crystals I collected get used up in each level even when I had more than necessary. Maybe there is an incentive to collect more that I'm just not aware of.
Things I liked:
- It felt really personal. This is why I like indie games. They give you a glimpse into the creators' minds and imaginations, and that really came across in this game. It certainly has a unique feeling to it, despite being (I imagine) inspired by a variety of similar kid-friendly puzzle games.
- The music is really nice and pleasant to listen to; it added to the overall feeling of the game as relaxing and sort of magical in a melancholic way.
- The game world is pretty to look at.
- Canny is quite adorable and I really liked its R2-D2-esque way of communicating.
- There are moments of odd and unexpected humour in the game that made me laugh out loud. It's an inoffensive and slightly absurd humour that perhaps appeals most to the young at heart.
- The game felt a bit old school in some ways. It reminded me of when I used to play games as a kid in the 1990s. I'm not sure how to articulate what specifically about the game made it come across that way, but it was both nostalgic and refreshing.
Anyway, it's a pretty nice game, and I'm glad I played it. If you think you appreciate similar things to me in an indie game, go ahead and try it out!
Scrap Garden is a very charming game with a very lovable lead character. A robot which otherwise wouldnt have amounted to much in this robot world finds himself as the last hope of saving all life across the world!
There's 2 things about this game that i feel sums everything up without going into to much detail.
1# It's not a hard game, but thats okay because that's not what it's about. It does have puzzling moments along the way that are entertaining and i did find myself getting killed a few times by trying to rush a boss encounter.
2# What mate this game for me was the tone and it's pace. It feels like im being read a bed time story leaving me unable ot sleep until i find out if the hero Canny wins. As each world passes my love for Canny grew and grew. He doesnt have a lot to say "Beep boop" but you can tell the kindness in his heart is pure, and that we all could learn a little from him.
I clock this game at about 2hours if you're not rushing and I'm more than happy having paid for it.
In the name of being critical, it wouldnt be fair for me to praise the game so much without saying something critical, but in the hope it could be taken helpful.
If i could suggest a couple things, It would be a more diverse sellection of animals / monsters. And coupled with that, i'd like to see them become more of a threat as with how it currently is, they're just 1 boop on the head away from the graveyard regardless of what they are.
Great game, have a very humble time. Would recommend to a friend.
7/10. :)
