I like the hit video game dead rising off the record where you get to play as frank west
DR2, but with Frank West. More content can also be found, such as some interesting changes in the main story, the new Uranus Zone, and some new Combo Weapons. The new voice acted messages are quite nice, and Frank is a lot more talkative than Chuck during the gameplay, which can be funny at times.
I love the fact that they changed the ending plot twist and final boss. It really surprised me.
Hell yeah
Multiplayer is fun, wish there was more of that in Dead Rising in general. Not to mention the sandbox mode being much more casual friendly than any other Dead Rising. Good times to be had, easy to pick up and set down, or slay zombies for hours on end.
Good game, terrible port. Controllers won't work without third party software/mods to fix it. PC settings are limited, where they work at all.
It's like Dead Rising 2, but Frank?? How wacky!
good zombie game
NO GOOD CONTROLLER SUPPORT ON A 13 YEAR OLD GAME THAT CAME OUT ON CONSOLES.
There are steam community controller maps, 3rd party sketchy apps, and none work as good as playing it on console. The "Controller" section in the options menu is grayed out no matter what. The right analog "mouse" function ruins the game, good luck shaking a zombie off you without scrambling for your mouse. You miss out on a lot of combos that cant be mapped to a controller. You fail quicktime events because they are keyboard keys no mattter what, Do not buy this game unless you plan on using a kayboard/mouse.
i've covered wars y'know
Only crashed 2 times and some weird walking glitch happened mid end game
cool
I love 2010 zombie video game jank <3
Colorful cast of encounter able characters and alot of fun weapons to choose from.
Bring a friend for added fun, though remember to save consistently to prevent progress loss.
My favorite item to craft is the Beer Hat.
Violence, Zombies, Gambling, Alcohol, and Hot Chicks - What more do you need in a video game?
Much like it's original counterpart, Dead Rising 2: Off The Record is a timeless classic, but this time gives Frank West's story the satisfying conclusion it deserves. Frank West, after becoming a washed-up celebrity attempts to regain his fame by entering a pay-per-view game show in Fortune City. After getting his prize money and a smidge of regained image, Frank snoops around as he usually does and finds out there's a lot more to Fortune City than he thought, and sets himself to uncover another great mystery and rise from his fall. Unlike the original, though, the game (most of the time) treats itself without much seriousness, introducing a lot more risque topics and slot machines, which make the experience even better! Psychopath battles are amped-up, and way more insane and deranged than those of the last game, ranging from a mad sex-pest wielding a massive chainsaw to a group of conservatives armed to the teeth with sniper rifles with the goal to "Start America again". While there isn't much sympathy for these madmen unlike many of the first game, they make for good laughs and fun, yet very challenging battles. Escorting and saving survivors has returned too, and instead of being difficult like the first game, they turn out to be good fun, if you supply them with the right weapons of course.
All in All, Dead Rising 2: Off The Record is probably a better experience than the first, and should be tried by anyone who has completed the original Dead Rising or the Chuck Greene rendition of Dead Rising 2.
This game rocks!
It's got all the fun of Dead Rising 2 but expanded and with a timeless free-play mode.
Buy it, chuck your friend the controller, and watch them wreak havoc.
Fun, cathartic, well made, and it'll run on anything.
One of my all-time favs
Classic game that runs as expected, though you will pretty much have to use K&M if you dont have an og 360 controller (thankfully its a simple game for K&M). After beating the vanilla game I highly recommend installing the OTR Plus mod on nexus, really elevates the game.
A story of it's own with unique twists and turns to make it special.
Fantastic!
Amazing game. I love this version more than the standard DR2.
I have always been a fan of the DR series, but this is my favorite.
Fuck you Stacey Foresight, No More Cure
The Legend of Frank West
Controller does not work without mods/3rd party software, WTF Capcom! Steam deck works somehow but it wouldn't work on pc.
There are a lot of issues with controllers for this game that has never been patched, so keep that in mind if you are gonna play this on the Steam deck. Game itself is fun though and a throwback to the old generations.
Game keeps crashing. Not sure what to do. I've lowered settings and texture smoothing quite a bit to where it's choppy but even still it will randomly crash. I honestly don't know what to do but if someone reading this has played this game and know how to stop it from crashing, let me know.
good but needed more blueprints
I have the original Dead Rising 2, gone through several playthroughs, and I THOUGHT I really wanted a sandbox mode. It sounded like a no-brainer. I did not, in fact, enjoy sandbox mode. Not enough going on.
Pp collecting at its finest
The Frank is Westin
Dead Rising 2: Off The Record

Here we are, moving straight into Off The Record (OTR) following DR2. My feelings towards OTR are rather positive considering its predecessor. Whilst DR2 left a bad after taste in my mouth I found OTR a sweet treat. Featuring QoL improvements, a “different” story and more Combo Weapons; OTR is a step up and clearly moving in the right direction. It has some fall backs; annoying bugs, story differences (which were a tad lazy) and such.
Story
Replacing Chuck from DR2, we focus on Frank West; Following a fall from fame after Willamette, Frank is desperate to get back on top. In doing so he stumbles into another outbreak (Who would have guessed), shenanigans follow. Whilst overall the story hits the same points with minor changes to characters, cutscenes and the occasional line; you could just cut Chuck back in and it’d be almost the exact same story as DR2. I think OTR misses a gold spot by having it be an alternate timeline. DR2 focusing on Chuck saving his daughter and clearing his name, all while Frank is leading the investigation into the outbreak seems much more appealing to me. Think Resident Evil 2. Overall, the story is still good; just falls short for me.
Flow
The story flows better here than DR2. I felt like I was waiting around less and the story was consistently moving forward (excluding one mission). Perhaps it’s how it was laid out or maybe even just me. I did play these back-to-back. However, one mission required you to get X amount of money. This drags out the game in ways that are unnecessary.
Characters
Outside of Frank everyone is still the same. Frank (in my opinion) is better than Chuck. Chuck thrives when Katie is on screen but falls a little flat any other time. Chuck wouldn’t even pass a reverse Bechdel test, I don’t know if that is a tragedy for character development or a win for the feminists: While Frank’s character isn’t reliant off another. Making him complete when it’s just him on screen or in a room of characters. Add in Frank’s occasional quip and he’s rather interesting.
Gameplay
Following my views on DR2 I didn’t have high hopes for OTR. Yet right out the gate the game addresses one of the major problems I had last time. Dodge Roll is available right from the start. This seriously benefits the game to have it so early. Admittedly I think it’s a little early, but I’d rather that than halfway through the game. The controls still feel sluggish as expected. OTR brings in a few QoL changes including an autosave system, better UI, indicators to say if a Survivor is in range of a door and so on. With more Combo Weapons than last time, slight changes, I felt like using a gun against every boss didn’t really help; Instead, combo weapons were the way to go. The map, saves (outside of autosaves) and travelling are the same though. Skills and levels haven’t change and my thoughts haven’t either.
Psychopaths & Survivors
Before I played OTR someone suggested the Psychopaths were too easy to a fault. From DR2 sometimes being brutally unfair to everyone, to being a cake walk in OTR, kind of deal. I don’t agree but I don’t necessarily disagree either. Yes, the bosses are easier right out the gate. Dodge roll being there at the start fixes that. However, some still gave me a run for my money. The few I faced in DR2 were significantly easier in OTR, yet I struggled with the new ones I faced. I think it comes down to knowing how that boss works and strategizing. Survivors are the same as last time, just slower for some reason. Annoying, however I did discover that if you use quick step while they’re following you then they’ll also have that effect.
Weird Thoughts & Bugs
This time around there’s voice lines when you answer the phone. That’s all they added... Stacey also has a new character model. Looked very weird after they reused the news segment from DR2 and then immediately showed Stacey. As for bugs, I encountered a few. First time starting the game I got stuck in the “Checking for DLC” screen. I faced a walking glitch every now and then where either I’d be continuously walking or the “W” would just outright not work; That was particularly frustrating when you walk straight out into a herd of zombies.
Conclusion
In a sentence,
Dead Rising 2: Off The Record is a step up in all the right ways, making for an enjoyable experience.
I would definitely recommend OTR. It still feels held back by what came before but manages to make for a more enjoyable time. Featuring QoL updates, more Combo Weapons and Frank West; it’s a game worth experiencing. I haven’t touched DR3 in a few (several) years but I am excited to see how it plays. Until then…
May Your Travels Lead You To Warm Sands Friend,
Ody
the game has non functional controller support.
One of my favorite co op games ever, this game is good time with a homie
I much prefer this game than dead rising 2 cause you don't have to take care of chucks little goblin daughter
it doesn't work with any controller, even pc controls don't really work anymore. Have to tab in and out to get the menu to recognise any input from a keyboard.
Best Dead Rising Game
Absolute fucking failure of a port.
Tell me how do you fuck up LAUNCHING THE GAME??? It's a 50/50 quarter flip when you start up the game that clicking on it crashes it. It's a 50/50 quarter flip if the game doesn't get stuck endlessly on some random "loading DLC" screen upon booting it for the first time, requiring you to open it again. The game refuses to be played in anything other than fullscreen, which is absurd. The settings are genuinely garbage and when you change them, somehow the game needs like 5 entire seconds to process and save that you turned the volume down ONE NOTCH???? Holy fuck.
Somehow it lacks controller support, requiring you to use outsider programs or a really shitty thrown together community steam layout for controller support without external programs, which is embarassing.
Finally, I am not wasting hours of my life fixing a unstable buggy game every single time it decides its not going to work. That is YOUR job, don't sell unfinished products to the market, Capcom you are genuinely lucky people don't sue you over this shit.
"partial controller support" bro, nobody plays a fuckin dead rising game with keyboard lmao
I'd only recommend this to someone who either loves DR2, or hasn't played it in a long time. It is very much a slight remix of the base game. If you're up for it, it's a lot of fun like the original version.
Just be cautious of controller issues. I encountered them even on steam deck, not that the keyboard controls are bad or anything.
Dead Rising 2: Off the Record takes everything from Dead Rising 2 and makes it better!
This is a what if style game replacing Chuck Green and slapping Frank West as the main Character.
Not only did they add (IK IM GONNA GET SH*T FOR THIS) the better character that is Frank West, they added more combo weapons and they brought back the camera! The story is different enough to keep you on your toes! They also added more locations and made all the DLC fits from DR2 unlockable!
This game is a love letter to the fans!
10/10
Is Dead Rising 2: Off the Record a good game? Absolutely, but sadly there's a lot of problems here. This is one of my favorite games which has sadly been subjected to one of the worst PC ports I've ever experienced. Regardless of what kind of rig you have, you will absolutely get 30 fps and below while looking at some angles of Fortune Park and there's absolutely nothing you can do about it. Multiplayer is almost completely broken, constantly crashing, and disconnecting your partner every 5 minutes. The new zone is super buggy and sometimes the rides will fling you out of bounds, and the new combo card with the alien head is so broken it's laughable: I shot it too many times and my game completely melted, flickering colors until it crashed. Challenges and quests are extremely finicky, requiring you to run in circles to find the activation plains. Graphics didn't really hold up well and everything is super saturated. If you can look past the awful port, then there's a really solid game here. Being a super cool director's cut of the second game, it's more than just a character swap, although that's probably my favorite part. Lots of content if you can deal with the bugs, but wait for a sale as there's no way it's worth 20$ in the state Capcom left it.
i played and beat two then went right into this one. took a few hrs of survivors instantly killing each other for me to uninstall.
There lots of bug still with what could be a great game
Like Looters spraying me with paint and then stealing my items like swords or guns and money which are not refunded when you kill them.
Or the fact that the prompts do not work
This is the absolute worst way to experience Dead Rising 2: Off the Record, make it double for Dead Rising 2. Controller Support does not exist unless you have a old ass Xbox 360 Controller and performance isn't great either, Keyboard and Mouse is fine, but it gets annoying sometimes when I want to just sit back and play some Dead Rising, hell even the FIRST game has good support and can read PlayStation controllers, I mean sure, the icons are xbox on the game, but I got used to that really quick.
In general Off the Record is essentially Dead Rising 2, but with various QoL improvements and a story that takes all the major events of the original and basically mirrors them; however, this time with twists and with Frank back as the lead. There's a few new things here and alterations to stuff. There’s checkpoints. Frank feels a little better to control. If you liked Dead Rising 2, you’ll like Off the Record; however, if you’re bored of playing Dead Rising 2, you’re not going to be any more enlivened by this one.
The story is more tongue-in-cheek than Dead Rising 2’s. Frank just has a more sarcastic, less serious vibe than Chuck; however, that’s to be expected given Chuck is trying to save his daughter. It’s a pretty mindless story with juvenile humor and there’s a certain charm to it, but I wouldn’t be surprised if others groan at it. I think the tone suits the world and gameplay better. So many zombie games take themselves WAY too seriously. There should be more irreverent zombie games where the inherent silliness of it all is played up and people get to treat the ‘Apocalypse’ like a playground instead of a desperate scramble for survival.
You’ve got the same timer as before, although missions happen at different times than the original. I am not sure how much of a factor this plays in things. When I originally played Dead Rising 2, the timer was oppressive until I got used to the game and then it became largely a non-issue. In Off the Record it has always felt like a complete non-issue to me, so if you had no trouble with the timer before, you’ll certainly have no trouble now.
Since this game is basically just an improved DR2, it comes with the same issues. I don’t like the psychopaths in either game. They weren’t fun to fight in the original. And they aren’t fun to fight here. In most cases they are even easier to beat than they were in the original, but there’s a few exceptions with the AI being broken and they do stuff they were not able to do before. It isn’t some great hindrance, but it just makes things more tedious. They are still quite easy when you know what you’re doing, but they still aren’t fun.
The survivors are MUCH more troubling to save here than they were in DR2. They had much higher survivability in the original. And even with the leadership magazines they are still a pain in the butt to deal with here. At the same time you’ve got checkpoints now so if something happens, just reload from the checkpoint. To be honest I’d rather deal with survivors that were more competent and capable of surviving without checkpoints than what we have in Off the Record. They are just tedious to deal with sometimes. And invariably you’ll get almost to the safehouse and one gets gobbled up by a horde of zombies and the newly buffed looters.
The late game is more tedious than it was in the original as well. It was not a welcome change to have to deal with the part of the game I liked least about the original, which was the post-military stuff. It adds more challenge, which some may enjoy, but I just find it to be a tedious obstacle that adds nothing more than anything.
I’m glad to have played the game, but because it is so much like Dead Rising 2 I did not get the same level of thrill here. I just feel like I’ve been here and done that. So while I recommend it, it isn’t like I can offer effusive praise for it. If you want more Dead Rising 2, get this. If you got your fill with the original, then don’t bother. This game isn’t going to win you over any more.
If you can't enjoy yourself or have fun in this game : First of all why? It has an entirely new alien themed section in the mall.
Difference in side quests as well from the original with some photography mini games, borrowed from the first game.
Includes unlimited time sandbox mode. Which is a welcome sight for OG's & new players to the franchise.
Dead Rising 2: Off the Record is a fantastic reimagining of the Dead Rising 2 experience, with a unique twist. Playing as Frank West, the original Dead Rising protagonist, adds a fresh perspective to the familiar Fortune City setting. The addition of new content, including a UFO-themed area and a hilarious " Sandbox" mode, makes this version a must-play for both new and veteran players. If you enjoyed Dead Rising 2, Off the Record is a worthy revisit, and if you're new to the series, this is an excellent starting point.
I wish I could recommend this game since it's the director's cut of Dead Rising 2 but sadly this PC port is horribly optimized. First time loading it up the game was stuck in an endless loop trying to detect DLC that I don't have (and literally can't buy) until I force quit the game. Restarting the game it hits the menu almost instantly but it's immediately apparent that this port is more rushed than the original since they don't even have an options menu on the main menu; if you want to get to options you have to load up the story or sandbox mode and then pause and go to options. I tried playing the story mode for a bit but was getting constant stuttering for no apparent reason. Sandbox mode seemed to work fine, but that's not what I'm looking to play, and given it's the exact same map(s) it doesn't make sense why this works fine while story doesn't. I'm not sure why this is happening other than this being a poorly optimized port since the original Dead Rising 2 runs just fine for me; I never got a single stutter and the only crash I ever got was a result of me repeatedly tabbing in and out of the game, so that's my own fault. Controller support pretty much doesn't exist for modern gamepads, just like the original, which is ironic since these games were developed for a controller. Really unless you have a major hard on for Frank West I'd recommend sticking to the original game instead. All this really is, is a version of the game with a bit of added content and a non-canon "what if" version of the main story. The original is the same price and actually works correctly so while I'd stick with it instead; I highly doubt Capcom will update and fix the game considering their solution to "fixing" the DLC seemed to be removing it from sale, but if by some miracle that happens, I'll update my review.
Love this game, played it on Xbox when I was younger but this PC port is terrible, there is no controller support and the UI doesn't change to indicate what peripherals you are playing on. Shame.
Doesn't work with my controller... Every other game on steam does.
I appreciate that they added a bunch of new weapons and brought back the photography mechanic in this game, but it is next to impossible keep the survivors alive and bullets just seem to bounce off the zombies. The frustration level is just too high with this one. The original version of part 2 is much better.
If you were a fan or liked Dead Rising 2, then this game might frustrate you. It has so many QoL improvements, but so many annoying things they changed for no reason.
Dead Rising 2, but if Frank West was the one to reach the safe house. Potography makes a comeback, but feels a little undercooked this time around. It does introduce a new area and new weapons, and a tweaked storyline that gets pretty stupid. I'd recommend it, but get one of the bundle packs down below. This particular game is optional.
this game really needs a fix. The dlc is in the code but never used.
