Great but the ending drags on
American Dream left me with the impression that I was in the house of my uncle, who loves guns and has a huge collection. Even now, being retired, he invites me to shoot every time I come. The house is literally overflowing with weapons of different models and types. Personally, I didn't like the game too much, since I can always shoot live targets, but in virtual reality it was interesting as part of everyday activities. In reality, of course, this is impossible to do. However, the level of entertainment and involvement in the game was high. I recommend this game to anyone who is a patriot of American culture, gun lovers and anyone who just wants to have fun. Although the game is not a masterpiece, it is still a good game worth checking out!

This is undoubtedly the most American game ever made! An absolutely essential play for all true patriots!!!1 🇺🇸🫡
Okay, now for the serious review. This really is a satire game first and foremost. DO NOT under ANY circumstances take this game seriously. I honestly wouldn't recommend this at full price because the story is VERY short at only around 3 hours, the gameplay overall is a bit on the repetitive side even with said short length and the only way I can describe the ending without spoiling it is that it gets more than a little bit preachy, enough that it kinda delivers the writers' obvious intended message with about as much subtlety as a shotgun to the face.
As someone who only payed 3 US dollars and 74 cents for this from the 2023 Steam Summer Sale though, I can't complain too much about the overall package. It was a fun little ride (quite literally given how level transitions are presented, actually...) and preachy ending aside, there were a few smaller jokes here and there that managed to get a good chuckle out of me.
If I was to give this a number rating, I'd say it's a solid 7/10.
Funny idea, bad execution. Also it's buggier than cyberpunk
I love the fact that this 'Murica Simulator was made by Australians and features Berettas and Lee Enfields.
Great game and longer gameplay than most VR experiences. Since you can resume from the chapter you left off at or choose any chapter you've already completed, it allows you to take breaks without losing progress. Everything you do in this game involves your guns. Whether its cooking, eating, drinking or just shooting random targets.
If you saw the trailer, thats a sped up version of the humor this game has to offer. It is very slow paced and doesn't add much additional humor. If the speaker talked twice as fast it would probably be an OK game.
It's buggy and abandoned. Don't bother.
a bit glitchy... sometimes had to reload chapters for the content to start properly. overall is actually a lot of fun. not a game for whiny snowflakes that can't handle 'murica pride.
definitely one of the more interesting vr games/experiences I've had.
I like basically everything about it except for the pacing. The narrations and scene/level transitions are, for me, unpleasantly slow. Enough so that I don't really wanna continue playing.
I enjoy the commentary it's making, I like the styling, the shooting is satisfying and the reloading is a neat mechanic. I just spent too much of my time waiting to be allowed to shoot things to really get into it. (Ironic, right?)
This game is yet another reason why I think Steam needs a neutral review option. The theme of the game is great and I love the campy 50s gee shucks angle of its twisted delivery and there's nothing else quite as ripe for satire as America's obsession with weapons. That all adds up nicely and the fact that it's on-rails doesn't take away from what they're doing.
edit: I had originally typed a somewhat lengthy review here about the repeating nature of the game and how that holds up over 3 hours and how that REALLY holds up at the end when the game is just blasting the same joke you've heard for 3 hours directly into your skull at max intensity.
And then I got the 'true' ending and then everything made sense. All of it. So I'll simply add that the non-sale price is a stretch but if they bring the 69% discount back anytime soon, definitely go for it.
A VR experimental game that makes the common mistake of having the main mechanic/gag wear out its welcome with a narration that fails to compensate for it. Ran into sequence halting bugs here n there as well that made restarting (several times) kind of grating. This should've come out four years ago to get a pass, not two. Put it on Google Cardboard or something, I'm sure that crowd'll love it.
This game is truly garbage. There are so many game-breaking bugs it's not even funny. There were several times where the game broke and I wasn't able to progress with the story, so I had to restart the game. Then, I started getting a bug where even though I have right-handed checked in the settings, it forced me to be left-handed. Luckily I have a Vive so I can swap the controllers in my hands, but swapping the controllers still meant that the ammo came out of the wrong side of the chair, and I decided I'm just not going to put up with this anymore.
Such a shame, since the concept of this game is fairly amusing to me. I bought it because of UpIsNotJump's review since it looked fun, but this game just has terrible execution.
The American Dream is an australian fps shooting gallery VR game set in the 1950ies in the height of McCarthyism. What really sets this game apart from most fps games i atleast have played or heard of is that this game is strongly satirical and critical of the americans infatuation and love for the right to carry arms so the game will surely be devisive as the subject certainly is a hot potato. Propably not a game for NRA members but if you as many americans cares for the right to carry weapons and still has some sense of humour left in regard of the subject i wouldnt necessarily recommend against the aquisition of it either. The game is outright preposterous like when you have to feed your baby with a gun by sticking a gun down the babys food while afterwards feeding it with the weapon stuck right into the toddlers face. On the other side the game has many quotes by renowned filosophers in regard of society and govermental power and such so the mix of the ridiculous and the insightfull makes this a truely unique experience while shooting your way through different scenarios with a talking dog by your side though the game.
Personally i loved this game and simply cant recommend it enough as its one of the best games ive ever played and im not only talking about games in VR im talking about all the games ive played over the years and ive played games since the mid to late 80ies.
Even though the games specs says NVIDIA GTX 1060 i ran it on a nvidia 970 and it ran fine for me so really glad i took the chance as i bought it for half the price right after i got my HTC VIVE. With the knowledge i have now do i need to say i wouldnt mind had i paid the full price
10/10
The game starts off amusingly enough but the shooting gallery gets old, as well as waiting for the game to let you do the next action. The chapter where you shoot buttons trying to find serial number matches is so slow. The thing that made me quit though (at the raising baby chapter), are the bugs. I started encountering bugs preventing me from progressing without having to restart the chapter again, which forces me to replay a bunch of content at the exact same speed. For example: The wedding not letting me grab the ring because of some toilet paper on my gun I couldnt get rid of, the baby food being accidentally shot off with no food respawns.
I hear it gets worse too, the second half of the game needs to be tuned for bugs and pacing.
9.98/10
I was looking for an FPS VR game to play in a very small space (I'm in a dorm room), and this game exceeded spectacularly. I played the full campaign, which took me about 3 hours, and enjoyed every minute of it. I liked the humor and satire it provided, and for the most part enjoyed the shooting mechanics.
I say most part because the "hand-gun" was a little buggy sometimes, and the springfield sections were difficult because of VR rifle precision (think playing competitive COD on the wii).
I think the game is definitely worth the price, and don't see what other people are complaining about. If you wanted a 60 Hour VR game, go play Skyrim or Fallout. It's pretty much up to you. If you think it looks good, buy it. It's a good game, and for $0.11 a minute, it beats any carnival shooting gallery I've played.
Good luck, have fun.
You can find similar reviews already written, pretty simple stuff, not really much to say.
The humor is okay at times, the minigames are sometimes fun, and the momentum of the game is brought to screeching halts to make sure you know how ridiculous anyone who isn't gung ho about restrictive gun laws is and how we should disagree with them. Had I known that it was going to be as preachy as it wound up being, I wouldn't have bought this even though it was on sale. The trailer and the description set up expectations for a whacky vr first person shooter that focuses on unique minigames, but it falls flat and gets lost in it's own moral lectures.
4/10
Starts out funny, gets quite boring. An overlong one-joke game that is more political lecture than game in any case. Try this, but don't persist past the point where the joke gets stale.
The game was just...boring. Concept seemed interesting as it started...but i sat for almost 40 minutes just waiting. A few little parts of shooting here and there and then a whole lot of listening to the "Dog" talk. Then the game froze up or something at the 1st date/carnival and just sat there.
I thought about trying to load the game or restart--but honestly do not want to sit through the slow "ride" thing again. Maybe have a way to skip to the action or something devs? i dunno.
The game's just too wordy. It feels like most of the time is spent with the dog just telling you what this scenario is about and what the next thing you should use your gun for is. I guess the basic idea is too unintuitive to just let the player figure things out but when every scene feels like it needs more time for introducing its logic than it actually takes to play then it's more of a lecture simulator than anything else. The lectures include a lot of 'mericuh type humor but it's too one-note. Doesn't help that the wooden cutout characters require narration to explain what their movements are supposed to be.
They say the most important part of humor is timing and well, the timing's all off in this game.
No matter what side they are on the firearms debate, no one can deny the effort that has been put into this game. Embark on an existential adventure that will ensure that Jack Thompson dies in vein and spinning in his grave. Journey through the life of a true American Hero and learn some valuable lessons about life and liberty along the way. This game is as beautifully crafted as the country it represents, and will always have you on the edge of your seat, guns at the ready. No matter who you are or what you believe, this game will provide you with your own image of the American Dream for the low price of $20.
Ok, I really wanted to like this game. I really do. But for goodness sake Buddy takes forever to bark your ear off about gun history, scenarios of the American Dream and gun colloquialisms.
I'll try to narrow it down, because I can't seem to narrow my sights properly on the pistols and rifles. It's fun where it counts; aim down sights, shoot gun, eject magazine, reload magazines in the air like a cool guy. Buddy can't STFU, I could forgive buddy if he was funny. Except he's not. His Transatlantic accent gets grating when you don't have stuff to shoot at until he gives you something to do. Walking you step by step as 'a true American patriot' grows up. I stopped after the car wash after he decided to yap in my ear about the Thompson submachine gun's history.
I just can't recommend it in its current state.
Just skip this, it's not even worth waitng for a discount at a dollar or less.
This is a collection of mini-games where you plink at things until story happens and a dog makes a satirical jokes out of gun ownership.
The theme is a satirical vision of a gun culture america as seen by austrians. The art style and format of the game is like a Disney themepark ride with flat plywood characters and a dog with a speaker in his mouth. It has a kind of 50s aestheic in presentation. The whole time you sitting/standing in a cart like in the ride so there is no locomation. No real enemies and amounts to watered down job simulator with less things to do and options to get the on rails story to continue.
The gunplay doesn't feel right. Everything sort of feels under powered or somehow off. The main pistols used has some kind of rate of fire limiter on them that wouldn't let me shoot faster and for some reason the case ejects upward. For two handed weapons you use a luger knock off that has its own hand that you'd use to manipulate gun controls or hold the front of the gun. This results in you holding the larger weapons with a kind of foregrip but its of by a few inches. Most things reload by hiting a virtual button on the side of the cart. Might have to grab the mag for rifles or do something different for like for the bolt action or shotgun.
The game isn't really buggy but I did manage to find one that required restarting the chapter/level. I continue to play games that are worse in this regard.
I stopped at what it called an intermission but it drags so much with a lot of talking and literal cut scenes using a projector screen it's taken me over an hour to get to this point. No mini game is really a challenge although I guess you could sit through it again to try to get better ratings. A lot of the time I was playing I found myself shooting random things while story is happening just because I have nothing to do and I'm not really doing story. This isn't great for an interactive media but some people like story driven walking sims.
Even without getting to the finish line it is clear there is a political message behind this title. At best it is mocking the idea of gun ownership. Reading reviews on other sites, after puting down the game, confirmed this but apperently it gets real clear in the message and real dark. This political non-sense really taints the satire for me as it became less of a Starship Trooper's "Do you want to know more?" and more of a Hell House fundy churchs set up during halloween. I wanted to play a game where I tried to do helicopter repair and maintenance with magnum revolvers or something not get preached at for 2 hours.
