Can't enable the Xbox gamepad.
Hard to play (Unplayable) with mouse and keyboard.
The infuriating lack of controller support makes this game unplayable for me. It's a shame, since I like the concept and graphics, but the constant issues with controllers made this game more of a headache than it was worth.
Hate games with a timer. This one has two...
It says we have 75 levels, but there are basically near 10 different and other is variations.
Story has no start and end. It's not bad because the plot is insipid.
And what do you want from a game, where the main character's name is Damsel?
Kyuketsuki hanta D. D for Damsel.
What else... Mission goals. 10 variations again and repeat.
Annoying foes and annoying animations after they hit or shot you. You'll understand what I am talking about when your timer almost run off, and you'll miss a swat.
Almost all my achievements rare. I am not surprised. Who else will want to play this.
P.s. Game not support wireless x box one gamepad.
I did not vibe with the storytelling, art style, animations, or controls.
I was really looking forward to this game but unfortunately it's just not the game I was expecting. I thought it would be more like a metroidvania and have advancement, new weapons, etc but no it's more like an old school platformer: short levels that are all about getting a high score within a time limit. I don't really care about score or time in games so I found it really boring.
It had lots of nice elements to be a nice action/platformer, all gone to waste with the arcade style.
The very short levels, make it insanely boring.
Played through part 1 of the campaign and I'm already hooked! Damsel is a really fun platformer/shooter game and reminds me a little of metal slug except the stages don't scroll and you get different objectives which is fun. If you like this sort of thing then definitely recommend it!
Great old style platformer.
Great story
Excellent indie title.
the only downside, no fan fare after the final chapter in campaign mode.
I played this at PAXAUS when it was still in crowdfunding mode, it didn't reach it's target, but we bought it anyway as it was so fun to play in the demo.
Damsel
Damsel is a very nice platformer shooter, I have only just started playing the game and it would only recognise keyboard and mouse which I did not like. The game is suppose to be full controller supported and it is, you must use this work around https://steamcommunity.com/app/452410/discussions/0/1634166237644573134/ as stated by the developer, if all done correctly your controllers should work just fine. Game plays like a breeze with controller now, certainly worth a purchase if you like what you see on the store page.
Tonnes of fun, keeps me coming back to chase those high scores! Active developer too - they're constantly tweaking things and keeping it fresh!
Fast paced arcade action! Shoot vampires and save hostages! A swath of wonderfully crafted levels stitched together with a beautiful comic book art story.
This game is so much fun to play and is a real challenge if you turn it up. You can just run and gun, but there are plenty of other ways to play. No two levels feel familiar and while objectives repeat, it feels different as they add new mechanics and enemies to the mix. Of course you can complete side objectives for more points. I can't wait to see what later levels will hold.
Damsel is a really cool platformer with enough interesting mechanics to keep you playing. I'm upto 40 hours played already and not stopping anytime soon. There are weekly challenges and leaderboards and Twitch integration. Game runs super smooth!
This is hard because I really want to like this game. In fact, there is a lot to love.
Lets start with the love!
First and foremost, the art is gorgeous. I really dig the style, the animations, and the settings. Its consistent, its quality, its badass.
The player controller, besides some strange design choices, is very solid indeed. These controls are hampered by those design choices, but is overall, tight, responsive, and feels good.
The enemy designs are interesting, a little cookie cutter (nothing wrong there), and will come at you in different ways. Perfect, were still running strong.
So what are the cons for me... everything is subjective, and this may simply 'not be my kind of game' but it feels like this game wants to desperately be too many things.
More than anything, it feels like this game wants to be Metal Slug with ultra arcadey action, but it wants to be Super Meat with the quick deaths and repeats, but lets throw in some Mark of Ninja that makes us really think out our moves and analyse the best way to progress...
Oh also... lets throw some QTE's in there.
Its confusing, because most of these disparate game mechanics are not properly explained. Its trial and error, and the solutions are discovered easily enough, but half of the game wants you to run fast, the other half wants you to stop and do a tired and very basic QTE. The QTE's are all based off the same principal, and in most cases all it does is hinder the second to second gameplay.
The worst offender being the time bomb, which you too often trigger in passing and have to turn around to go back to, stalling again. Why not have these in the middle of infinite spawners/the energy source for a enemy with shields until you take it out in a well defended area/ANYTHING. All the QTE's seem to do is frustrate.
Next you have the noise, firstly, the score pops into the air and falls down becoming debris... are we arcade or not? It's too much. It is really hard to keep track of where stuff is, and everything seems to be in the foreground.
Heres an example:
There is an enemy, a coffin, and a hostage all on top of eachother. Which gets hit when I shoot? Oops, it was the hostage.
I get you want barriers, but it just doesnt make sense. The coffins look like they are in the background, everyone walks in front of them, yet you will hit them and not the enemy behind it, then that enemy kills me with a single shot kill? I mean... gah. Ya got me... but not in a way that feels good.
It is EXACTLY the same when you hit a hostage in the same scenario. I get it, risk reward, but why not strap that time bomb thats just being an bore TO THE HOSTAGE. It could be counting down from level start, or when you trigger.
Or maybe the VAMPIRES suck the hostages blood if you hit them.
OR the vampires are moving towards a group of hostages.
I know Im being that person, the one who in hindsight is sayin 'Oh why didnt you do this', but its because for the most part I cannot criticise this.
This is great polished work, and there dont seem to be technical issues or bugs. This is obviously made with love and passion, and it shows. For my money, and once again, my tastes the major issue is one of design.
Its just not that fun at this time.
It is also very hard for me to care for the characters or setting, I am in no way invested. If this was a pick up run and gun arcade fest, cool. But is it? I dont know... because what I was expecting was some kind of story line, and maybe thats coming but the 'Campaign' really feels and is presented like a bunch of game types. Yes it gets tougher, but there is really no sense of progess.
Each level sees you doing the same bunch of QTE's with a side of action, then you get your score, then you go to another location. Maybe there is a proper story coming, perhaps Im missing something.
The game touts itself as being fast paced (unless you are QTE'ing or accidentally shooting scenery), arcadey (except when its constantly not), single player game (yes), set in a cartoon world (that I know nothing about), with a pumping synth soundtrack (the music is rad as heck).
Lets say I made you a milkshake. I said 'Yo, you want a strawberry milkshake?' and you would say "Heck yes!".
Then I give you something that looks like a strawberry milshake, and for a second it tastes like a strawberry milkshake, but then you taste kimchi, and when you take a second look someone has garnished it with a bacon.
You, like me, may love all those things... actually this metaphor may be bunk, that MIGHT be incredible. But its probably not.
TLDR: Do I recommend this game?
This is tough, because like I said, theres nothing technically wrong with it. I want to say maybe its just not to my tastes, but I have some diverse AF tastes in games.
Im ultimately thumbing this up, because it does show a lot of promise and I really want to see it succeed, and to other tastes might be perfection. Also its in early access and dropped only early this year.
It is obvious that the devs are talented, and committed, that much is easy to see, so I have faith we are gonna see a lot of good things coming from the devs.
The game concept is nice and looks like it would be a lot of fun. However, the game in its current state is unplayable. There is a notable lag in the controls as it takes anywhere from one second or more for the game to respond to button presses. Fix the laggy controls and I will thumbs up immediately.
Dasmel constantly has me coming back for more.
It's a great game to sit down to and play for a few minutes, or lose yourself to for multiple hours. It never feels underwhelming or overwhelming and never makes you feel like you've been cheated. It simultaneously requires delicate but aggresive precision.
It has finely tuned controls, levels that have enough action that makes it practically pointless to own a chair, and an art style that leaves you in awe.
I genuinely and thoroughly enjoy this game.
Each level of Damsel is like going through a playground, except that playground is filled to the brim with; vampires, deadly obstacles, hostages and collectables. The main replayability of Damsel comes from each level giving the player a plethora of options for how they want to play. There is something extremely satisfying about optimizing each movement in a level to try and achieve the highest score, which in my opinion is the greatest strength to Damsel as a whole.
Damsel controls may seem clunky at first, but after a couple of levels controlling Damsel is like second nature. Each move in Damsel's arsenal serves a purpose that allows the player to play how they want to play, without limiting them to one dominant strategy.
Along with strong gameplay, Damsel offers an excellent synth-wave inspired soundtrack that gives the player a perfect background track while they slip, slide and shoot through the levels. The awesome comic book inspired look of the game also helps create a greate atmosphere, that gives some hints into what sort of world Damsel lives. Along with amazing background art, each character in Damsel has unique design and really breathes life into each enemy that inhabits the levels.
If you're looking for a TL,DR here are my pro's and cons.
Pros:
- Strong game-play
- Smooth controls
- Strong replayability (especially with Arcade mode)
- Awesome Art
- Bangin' soundtrack
- Motivated developers that are pushing very frequent updates out using community feedback
Cons:
- Early access, so still some bugs to iron out
- Not much in the way of a story
Fast paced and super fun
If you love tight controlling speed running types of platformer this game is great!
The controls are still a tad clunky but responsive enough to understand quickly. The gameplay itself is pretty fun and fast. I've only played several missions from the story mode but while short the game is fun for sure. My one qualm with the game is that the combat does not feel nearly diffucult enough and the maps feel like they could use more space because of how quickly you can get around.
Fast-paced, vamp-shooting action.
Join Damsel as she kicks the ass off the undead.
Still in Early access so has a few bugs to iron out but this is a title that is already well worth your time.
