I've 100% completely beaten this game on Nintendo Switch many years ago and now on Steam version I still forgot many secrets and stuffs. So much fun but some puzzles are too hard.
A fun side scrolling game. Definitely worth the play if you enjoy games like Hollow knight.
A perfect game for WonderBoy III fans. MonsterBoy and the cursed kingdom has similar mechanics to the old WonderBoy games, but with a more sophisticated upgrade systems.
Good Game, but it has too many flaws for me to recommend it.
First things first, I am not finished with this game, and I do plan to finish it, but I just wanted to write this review while it was fresh in my mind.
Starting with the good, I loved the animation in this game, it was constantly expressive and phenomenal. The exploration of the game is also very fun, standard metroidvania affairs, getting powers and backtracking in order to get even more collectibles. Finally, the concept of the game is interesting and leads to some neat puzzles. Each form has their own strengths and weaknesses and have fragments of your original form to make up for it. None of the forms are ever deemed obsolete. I also like how each piece of equipment isn't just stats.
As for the bad, this game has incredibly little quality of life. There is no quick select to my knowledge. Even pressing the buttons incredibly quickly lead to a choice wheel. This becomes an issue when practically every single puzzle in the game requires you to switch between forms multiple times. The issue is only exacerbated in situations that are supposed to require speed, like timed sections, disturbing the gameplay enough to honestly not be that fun. This also is an issue for switching equipment, but more excusable. The form switching is an integral mechanic to the game and to have it be this clunky and unfun is awful. One thing that is less important, but important enough to mention is the fact that there is no easily usable upwards attack for any of the forms other than the human one. Even in the pig form, which most closely mimics the human moveset, with spells, downwards attack, and even combo. Sure, there is the lightning spell and the lions upward dash, but neither are as easily accessible as the simple upward slash the human has. If it was like, genuinely important to have an upwards attack, it would be annoying but excusable, as the main gameplay loop is getting things that bring you closer to your human form. But it isn't. It honestly just seems like it was forgotten, which is a big issue when there are enemies like the bats or clouds, which seem like they were designed to be hit with an upwards attack due to how awkward it is to kill them normally. Finally, there is literally no way to heal other than occasional hearts from enemies, at certain shops or fountains, or a revive potion you can only hold one of at a time. I don't have that much to say about this issue, other than it was incredibly annoying to deal with. Even if that was what the devs wanted, it seemed like a challenge for the sake of a challenge, rather than for fun. And those are just the overarching issues there are a couple aggravating issues specific to one section.
The smaller of these, but one that caused me enough annoyance to remember, was the interaction with the ice boots, lava geysers, and the lions slam attack. Simply put, even though, to my knowledge, slamming the lava geyser was necessary for a puzzle, it damaged you. There wasn't any indication, other than the actual damage, that this was intended. This really disoriented me in the puzzles of that section, which is kind of a big issue when puzzles are the lifeblood of your game.
Mild Spoilers For a Late Game Dungeon
In the haunted mansion section, there was a boss fight, like most sections. This boss is what inspired me to write this review. If you did not know, Monster Boy And The Cursed Kingdom is what I call a "Keyboard Game", or a game that requires little to no interaction from the mouse. This is completely fine, I love games like Risk of Rain or Binding of Isaac and they have this same stipulation. The issue, however, comes with when the mouse IS used. In the dungeon, one of the characters that you have been periodically running into accompanies you on your journey. And with them, you get the ability to shine light for puzzles. This is controlled by the mouse, which is reasonable (oddly enough it uses right click while left click is completely unused, which i find odd. that is just a nitpick though). In the boss fight of the section, you use the light in battle. This was incredibly infuriating. As you could barely do anything while you were trying to shine the light on the boss. The most you could do was either walk or jump, as they are on opposite sides of the keyboard, and your other hand is preoccupied with the mouse. It doesn't help that the boss is one of the more bullet hell-y of the bunch. Like most things, this wouldn't be an issue if there was just one more thing. Make it so you cant move while shining light (and accommodate the boss for that). This would make things much less infuriating, as you wouldn't be expected to uncomfortably control your character, but deal with the risk that comes with using the light because it has that built in. (The second phase of the boss I also found very annoying, but it was a better kind of annoying that just infuriating, and the third phase was fine. Though both were shredded by the fire breath ability you get earlier in that dungeon).
Spoilers Over
Overall, Monster Boy And The Cursed Kingdom is fun. It has its flaws, but i still had a good bit of fun. However, for $30, there are games that I would play so much more for so much less. I don't blame you if you want to play it, but definitely wait for a sale. It is just very hard to recommend when the gameplay loop is constantly hampered by poor decisions. As I said though, the animations are phenomenal, especially for the player character. If not for the relatively high price point (at least for games I play), i would maybe recommend playing just for them. If you're really running out of metroidvanias to play, then this is a pretty okay choice, just know that it can be incredibly infuriating at times.
And because I don't like being negative, Thank you Game Atelier and FDG Entertainment for making this. I've dabbled in programming and dear god it can be frustrating. I commend anyone who can make a game, even if its not something i would recommend. I wish i could give scores rather than basic reccommend or not, because i would say maybe 6-6.5/10 for me personally. This game has a ton of charm and it is clear that there was a lot of passion put into it, but with a mix of awkward mechanics and confusing design choices, i don't think the gameplay is enjoyable enough to recommend, especially for this price point. (I did love charging around with the lion and swinging with the frog for just some dumb fun though)
Sorry for the negative review, I do like this, but not enough to recommend.
I love Metroidvanias, but I could never get into the Wonder Boy series. It's a bit too old-school for my tastes, you know? Even the 2017 remake of The Dragon's Trap left me cold: its updated presentation is beautiful, but the underlying design is as obtuse and frustrating as it was on the Master System.
But what if Wonder Boy III were made today? Not a slavishly faithful remake, but a new game that uses those same ideas to build a modern game for modern gamers, with proper tutorials, guidance, and a cohesive interconnected world?
Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom is that game: not quite a remake and not quite a spiritual successor, it finally executes the formula in a way that I could enjoy.
Pros:
➕ Gorgeous backgrounds and animation.
➕ Huge world with tons of secrets to find.
➕ Not too short, not too long.
➕ Plenty of QoL features. I especially commend their map screen, which manages to clearly and cleanly convey its information.
Cons:
➖ Controls are a bit floaty and frustrating.
➖ Great music, but the tunes get repetitive after a while.
➖ General lack of "juice": combat and magic don't feel very satisfying.
➖ Insipid story: the anime-style opening implies an epic tale of world-saving adventure, but the game is actually about undoing the titular curse that turned the kingdom's inhabitants into anthropomorphic animals. I mean, sure, let's get that sorted out, but these are relatively low stakes. (P.S.: a Dark Lord™ from a Dark Realm™ shows up at the last minute for a save-the-world finale.)
A worthy successor to the original "Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap", with better gameplay (more free and creative use of the shapeshifting) and of course better graphics. Note that this is a new game and is distinct from the WB3 remake.

Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom is a stunning love letter to the Wonder Boy series, delivering a beautiful blend of modern gameplay mechanics and retro charm. For those of us who grew up with Wonder Boy in Monster Land and Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap, this game is like revisiting old friends—but with fresh twists and a gorgeous, hand-drawn art style that reimagines the whimsical world we remember.
The gameplay in Monster Boy is enriched by varied transformations that keep the puzzles and combat engaging, and each form (from a fire-breathing dragon to a powerful pig) brings unique abilities that perfectly capture the spirit of the original games. The levels are crafted with creativity, offering a wonderful mix of exploration, platforming, and puzzle-solving that remains challenging yet rewarding.
As for the soundtrack, it’s simply superb, capturing the heart of the series with compositions that feel both familiar and new. The music effortlessly combines the nostalgic tones of past games with fresh melodies that enrich each scene, making it one of the best soundtracks in recent platformers.
This isn’t just a tribute to the classics; it’s a game that stands on its own, taking the best of old-school charm and modern game design to deliver an experience that’s both nostalgic and thrilling. Whether you’re a longtime fan or new to the series, Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom is a must-play adventure that truly honors its legendary roots.
A very fun time. idk what else to say, its just been fun to play.
FUN!
Fantastic reinvention of Wonderboy in a metroidvania formula.
A little bit rage inducing in some parts where enemies jump out of nowhere and you have to replay some parts.
But the biomes you explore, the soundtrack and art style all blend together so well i had to see it trough the end, and it did not disappoint!
Great game, lots of fun, great exploration and more challenging to complete than you would assume at the start, with lots of great design and music.
I love all the inspiration it took from Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap (and the remastered music) and turns it into a different game with its own charm, secrets and exploration. Overall the secret areas are fair and the games gives you enough help to completely explore the map (minus the main secret on the Village of Lupia's well which is a bit hard and had to use a guide for).
Loved the new versions of the music and the mix of transformations with their abilities.
One negative aspect is the platforms, you can see in the reviews quite a few people complain about the controls, but the real issue is the platforming, specifically the hitboxes on the edges of the platforms, you need to aim for the center of the platform and avoid the edges as much as possible, specially on small platforms or you will just fall through. It takes a bit to get used to it, its not too bad, but if you are used to really tight platforming games its a bit annoying.
Horrible game, not deserving of the positive reviews. Asking 30 bucks for a game with atrocious controls and artificial difficulty because of said controls is just ridiculous. Easily among the worst games i've ever played and probably the worst one sitting in my library. I only beat it out of spite and because steam wouldn't refund me anymore since the purchase was too old. I used cheats for it because the game is filled with the most annoying enemies imaginable. Only recommended if you're a full on massochist or a furry weaboo. 0/10 game for normal people...
Beautiful artwork.
Bad animations.
Very bad controls, up to unplayable level. Sad.
This game despite the colorful graphics and peaceful family friendly like atmosphere is brutally difficult. I loved this game very much despite it having me pulling my hair out on a few occasions. The game is this is a puzzle heavy exploration game. It's not the metroidvania that I thought it would be. It's a nearly perfect game for what it sets out to do though it can be too complicated for its own good sometimes.
Absolutely loved this game, its like a mix of zelda, wonderboy, and hollow knight!
Im surprised I never heard of this game at launch, I wish I had though. 10/10 would recommend if you like zelda and hollowknight and wonderboy.
cute graphics, but by the ends you are forced to finds every single hidden treasures just to be allowed to progress. uninstalled
THE MUSIC!!!
What starts off as a simple enough game turns into an utter mess involving not properly explaining mechanics right up to kaizo tricks because like the vast majority of game developers, they have chosen the path of Dark Souls throwing in cruel tricks that only the best players will be able to pull off without feeling miserable.
Mechanics such as ground pounding lava geysers without taking damage is neglected entirely meaning either they forgot or you are meant to take damage.
The constant need to INSTANTLY switch between characters especially beloved snake is quite infuriating when transformations are not instantaneous and then also require an immediate input on top of that all within a fraction of a second. And this is just to complete the game without all the extra fun stuff.
Then there are instances where it is not obvious where it is you are supposed to go since what is and is not an object you can stand on is made obvious. or just who knows where you are meant to go.
idle animations do not need to become active immediately. You can give a person time to think for a moment rather than just be in a persons face.
Good luck getting enough money to buy everything without grinding.
Gimmicks are pretty good though although it does require very big brain to remember everything going on with each character.
It was cute and enjoyed the first play through. Design and scenery was beautiful.
The annoyances mount up though. Your character feels "large" on the screen. Your shield hitboxes are tiny. And it has that modern PC "we made a quick retro gaaaaammmmmeeeee" meme where there's very few different types of enemies, and very few of them on a screen at one time. I really miss those old days where screens and zones felt more alive with more shit moving around.
Some of the puzzles or things to hunt were pretty challenging. There's a few bugged spots that will require you to reload your save.
Oh and loved the christian rock tier opening song, lol. The Forest theme is top tier and will probably be in some kid's "4hr Top Switch Music" compilation someday.
