This is honestly one of the most fun and straightforward roguelikes I've played in a long time. Very much feels like a Doom or Duke Nuke'em of roguelikes. It has a fun, arcade-style feel to it, and it a good time to just throw on, kill some monsters, and try and get a high score. There aren't any traps, or cheap feeling deaths, and I personally really enjoy the simplicity and minimalism, and this game just does it well.
The game has nice classic feel to it., it's old school hack and slash, but with tactics. The graphics ar simple and funny and the spoken commentary is dwarfish-hammy. The masonry is amazing, of course.
Great little game worth a try...........
What is Torgar's Quest? It's like the most simplified roguelike game possible. Really, roguelike cannot be simpler than this.
I've read in some review that this is addictive and you want to go deeper and deeper into the dungeon. I love dwarves (I mean I really LOVE them) and I was in the mood to play something simple, which I didn't have to learn for a long time. So I thought: let's give this one a chance and I bought it for like $1,5 on a sale.
I played this game for like an hour and I need to say I was bored. In my case there was no need to go deeper and deeper. I felt that there is nothing else arount the corner. Neither fighting or getting levels by my character, didn't give me not even scratch of emotions. That experience was just flat and boring.
But there was one nice thing in the game. Torgar's comments - they are quite funny, like in old-school action movies.
VERDICT
If you want to play some quite good RPG/roguelike/dungeon crawler game, this is probably not what you're looking for.
But if you're in the mood to play something really simple, kill some monsters and pass few levels in a dungeon, maybe you will like it - there are some people who like this game. But I cannot guarantee that.
If you’re dwarves fan and want to check other games about/with dwarves, consider to follow our Dwarven Kingdom curator.
The combat is stupid, 50 rounds of missing each other against each of the most basic of enemies. Simplistic design and graphics otherwise. It's priced right, at only $1.50, but still not very good.
Quite challenging and simple dungeon crawler
Concept: Torgar!
Sound: Torgar!
Graphics: Sub-Torgar!
Gameplay: Torgar!
Brief Description: Torgar! Torgar! Torgar! Auto-Attack! Torgar! No save! Sad Torgar! Torgar!
Bottom Line: Torgar!/Torgar! ...... Worth the Torgar! at 5 Torgars! or Torgar!
This is not a very good roguelike. I mean at least it is a roguelike: grid-based, turn-based, procgen dungeons, permadeath, but sorry, it is very bland and annoying.
There's a weapon slot and an armour slot but you start naked with no weapon. The first thing you notice is that you have to hold down keys and use the autorepeat because you miss a lot and it takes a lot of hits to kill a single monster. I'm talking like 15 hits is not uncommon to kill a trashy, normal monster; one of the ones with visible armour on can take 50 hits. You're holding that button down, trust me.
The only thing that stops you getting completely mobbed by mobs and killed on level 1 is the fact that mobs don't pursue you like in most roguelikes, they just sort of move about randomly unless you're right next to them. The tactic is to kind of move round them and avoid them as much as possible, looking for the exit.
And that brings me to the map. There isn't one. No mini map, no 'm' for map.
It's just all rather simplistic. There's no field of view, you can just see everything; mob AI seems really primitive; combat is hold down button and watch your hp and enemy hp go down. The dungeons all look the same at least as far as I got (level 6?). [edit: slightly different wall graphic, I noticed]. You get different looking enemies but I didn't notice them doing anything different to each other. There's supposed to be 3 abilities you can get but I never got one.[edit: got one, see later] You can carry one potion which gives you most or all of your hp back.
Graphics: They aren't bad but they aren't great. There's no animation. The pixel fonts have anti-aliasing on them which looks awful.
Sound: They were obviously aiming for retro 8 bit "chunky" sounding samples like old arcade games but the sound effects aren't that good. There's a few little snippets of speech which aren't 8 bit so maybe they weren't going for 8 bit after all, or maybe they just wanted the speech samples to be intelligible.
Controls: 4 way movement only. You cannot rebind the controls, it's cursor keys or gtfo. R to rest, e for potion, 123 for abilities (Finally actually got one recently but seems they are limited use).
Iti's just-- why would you play this when you can play a better roguelike game for free off steam with more depth, variety and fun? There's loads, from dungeon crawl stone soup to brogue, angband, sil, - there are tons. If you have to be on steam then get curse of yendor- same price, much better game.
I seriously do not recommend you play this game, even if you got it for free.
What's the best way to start an adventure to find 7 shards that will grant Torgar the ultimate power? Armed with nothing but clean underwear and a lunch, of course!
This is a rogue-like dungeon crawl, questing ever downward in search of the seven shards. It has three difficulty levels, and anyone with a decent sense for this type of game will probably win in "Normal" mode after a handful of games. Hard mode is considerably more difficult, and nightmare mode is just that - swarms of baddies following you through the dungeon and trying to trap you in corners.
I'm not sure which gave me a greater sense of relief - winning the game or finding my first set of clothes. Recommended!
Update - nominated for the “I Thought This Game Was Cool Before It Won An Award” Award
Torgar\'s Quest is a fantastic retro dungeon crawler that is deceptively simple in its controls. Once you start playing it, you can\'t help but keep going deeper into the dungeons. Addictively fun.
A fun, bug-free, fully released indy game made by people who obviously care. Good if you enjoy dungeon crawls.
