This game may not be to everyone's taste but I find it to be an enjoyable one to kick back and chill with..
The characters are engaging and the collective stories Interesting.
The player's choices during the discovery of particular stories can change the theme of the story from humorous to scary etc and the growing of stories due to their retelling means they have a bigger impact upon the disposition of the listener. The walking can indeed be tedious but there are other travel options available such as hitch hiking, buying a train ticket or even sneaking onto a train. The map is easy to navigate in order to plan your next journey even if it does become a bit cluttered with icons as the numerous stories are collected. Overall, a unique little gem that I am still enjoying.

Slowly trekking across america to gather stories for a creature you lost to in poker doesn't sound like it should be fun, but it is.

This ain't no visual novel, but you can hitchike or ride the rails to go faster, which is nice.
But you may get more stories by plain old walkin'.

Great stories. Great storytelling style. Interesting set-up.
And watching the stories grow and change through re-telling is interesting.
As it hearing the stories of the other wanderers and vagabonds you meet by the campfire.
With both human stories and supernatural encounters, it feels very much like you're walking the line between urban legends and real stories. And even the most boring story grows interesting as they are told and re-told.

VERY american.
Plus, I'm pretty sure I learned some American geography in the process.

A far better game than I expected it to be.
And excelent storytelling.

It's a nice walking sim with compelling stories, great illustrations a nice soundtrack.
Is a bit slow, but that's what walking is all about.
Shame really that even after many years some bugs are still there and probably aren't getting fixed anytime soon.

Interesting premise, fantastic music, narration and art style. It ultimately fails to muster an interesting gameplay loop or put together ideas in a cohesive form. Not to even mention the terribly slow pace.

有点失望。无血肉者行走在“天命昭昭”年代的美国旷野,收集故事,这么好的想法,还请到了几位职业作家/新闻记者来执笔主线,结果就这?
游戏基本不存在什么可玩性,全程就是毫无血肉(字面意义上)的故事收集器。在最开始,你跟野狼玩德扑,你手气巨好,直接梭哈,结果野狼跟你玩塔罗牌,反正你就输了,他把你剥成一具骷髅让你给他卖命,任务就是收集故事。跟你解释的时候狼哥还蛮有哲理,“阿美利卡这片土地是由故事组成的,真的很少,假的很多,故事在讲述中还会发生变化,你可以多整点真故事然后把它编进大故事里”。
初看这段我以为是玩法介绍,心说哇这文本量得是大工程吧,结果开始玩的时候我知道上当受骗了……这个游戏根本不知道怎么讲故事啊!
首先我必须得说,我看到的文本都很不错,真的相当不错,让人想长叹一句作家不愧是作家,写出来的十个单词我有八个不认得,认得的都想往笔记本上抄。游戏的主要玩法是行走模拟+故事收集,你漫步阿美利卡大地,碰到各种人和事。主线是几个漫游者,碰到他们之后你们可以共度一夜,你需要按照他们的要求(我想听一个恐怖的/温情的/曲折的/有希望的故事)给他们讲故事,如果你选择的故事对他们的胃口,那么你就可以走进他们的心扉,在下一次遇见时就能够开启他们故事的下一章节,等他们跟你讲完所有的故事后,你就再也不会遇见他们了。要想在恰当的人面前讲出恰当的故事,这涉及到理解也涉及到脑电波,我就很难跟一些人对上电波,比如有个流浪汉小男孩,老想听曲折的故事,我按自己的理解讲曲折的故事他又要么说我无聊要么说我想吓他,真难伺候……
故事按照塔罗牌的不同项分成挺多主题,死亡啊悲伤啊友情啊未来啊荣誉啊,有很伤感的,比如一个小伙子弄丢了求婚戒指,请你跟他一起找,可是没找到,你们分别后你突然找到了那枚戒指,赶快去还给他,可他已经不在那里了;还有很诡异的,比如长着角和翅膀的山羊在水边哀叫,没有人知道原因;还有很搞笑的,比如有个中餐厅已经打烊了,结果一群工人走进来说要吃饭,希望你不要不识抬举,厨师从垃圾桶里捡了点烂菜叶做出一桌美味佳肴吃得工人们啧啧称奇(笑死,什么鬼刻板印象);也有很温情的,比如一个玉米农指着那棵长得最好的玉米,对自己的孩子说,这是你们祖母,我们把她还给土地,土地再把她还给我们。
但最让人失望的地方也是关于故事的:制作者占有了这么多美丽的文本,这些文本居然不能回看,只能查看标题,而且核心玩法之一“故事在讲述中会发生改变”也只是改变一下标题而已——在玩家看来就是一句“故事越讲越长,xxx现在变成了xxx”,完全没有具体文本支撑。制作人你平时不听八卦吗?你看推特趋势难道只看tag上那几个词吗?你看文学作品难道只看个章节标题吗(当然如果你看中国玄幻网文的后半部分这倒确实是一个合适的阅读方法)?
那三个古怪的生存项也是来搞笑的,金钱、生命和睡眠,它们存在的意义就是拉慢游戏进度,强迫你到达每个城镇的时候都去赚钱(本人绝不乞讨!),赚钱的文案又相当敷衍地重复利用,我打了这么多次工,总感觉自己要么在帮人看狗,要么在帮人卸货。
一言以蔽之,这部作品的故事实在是好,但也是真的不会讲故事。受益于这个完全抹杀游戏闪光点的收集系统,玩到后期,整个游戏就是不断地走——找到任务人——用故事跟他对打扑克——故事又变长啦!不晓得这部作品有没有周边比如设定集,想对制作组说,别惦记着你那草稿一样的画了,把那两百来个故事和它们的各种改编版都给我写上就得了!

To preface, the main reason I decided to play this game is the soundtrack. One of the songs came up in my randomized daily playlist and I ended up listening to the rest of them.

Now, the game mechanics itself is truly tedious. Everything everyone said about it before is true; you can rightfully call this one a walking simulator. At the same time, some bad gaming experiences contribute to a good narrative, and I'm familiar with how monotonous walking a country is so I connected a controller and kept going. I enjoyed it overall. I cannot recommend it to others though. Simple as that.

One thing I want to touch on separately is something I've seen others mention and it's that, ingame, some fairly gruesome stories pass for "funny" stories. While I understand how unsettling that is, I also know how sometimes we have to laugh at things that are inappropriate because otherwise we won't be able to keep going. If you walk for long enough, you will see something. This sentiment falls a bit flat in the game because the tone of the narrative is fairly neutral so it's open to personal interpretation.

I switched my review to YES for recommended, but this comes with some HUGE caveats. I have to agree with what others have been saying- this game feels entirely unfinished.
I love the concept, I love the atmosphere, and I love what has been STARTED with this game. However, so many things feel like the developer gave up halfway through or ran out of money.

The map is completely unpleasant to navigate. You simply move too slowly. Increased walking speed and some more events- maybe a collection aspect for materials or spendable money to add cosmetic upgrades would fix this issue immediately. There's no point to the walking other than to increase the amount of time players are forced to spend on the game.

When stories grow, I would LOVE if you could hear exactly how the story changed. I want it to be added to the log- I want the narrator to tell the story you heard before, but some things end up being different, so you can see the fruits of your labor. Being TOLD that the story changed but not getting to hear about it feels like a placeholder and a cop out.

Edit: A bit further in, and I can say that it does grow on you. The interesting stories and the way the characters grow and change as they reveal more about themselves is almost enough to keep me suffering through the clunky mechanics and the very slow crawl across the map. I really am NOT enjoying exploring this excessively large map, but the story really is good. Its a shame its hidden behind so much walking. The game swears to offer 20+ hours of gameplay- I'd like to know how much that would be reduced if walking speed was increased by 5.

I'm not that far into the game yet, but these aspects have already been wildly disappointing. The settings are half baked as well. It feels like I'm missing all kinds of features that would vastly improve it immediately. Your game doesn't need to be complex or with the best graphics. The assets that are there are perfectly fine. I just wish the extra 20-30% of polish had been added on top of what is a FANTASTIC concept.

I'm 13 hours in and have decided to stop playing. There's a lot wrong with this title and their political agenda is pushed all throughout the story.

Walking in the overworld map is painfully slow, and is in no way fun to do. I really enjoy the idea of collecting the stories and then recollecting their evolved forms like some kind of spell evolution, but they're categorized in tarot card categories that very often make no sense as to the stories' actual content. Also there's no way to tell what level or awakening each story/spell is. Even the person listening often would get confused if I told a hopeful story and then they ask me why I told them a sad story or something like that.

If you can overlook all of those things and are one of the few people who enjoy that political agenda, then this might be the one for you.

Interesting concept, but strange implementation. We are collecting stories, so why there is no proper categorisation? What the point of misleading themes of the said stories? Maybe stories about depressed people and bleeding animals are funny to the devs? I`m sure that`s not the case to the majority of players, these stories are supposted to be sad, no?

Another major problem — the way we move around the map. Its very slow and you have to move around a lot in this game.

I really tried to give it a chance, given the surprisingly wonderful reviews, I really tried. Not a chance. Maybe it isn't for me, maybe the reviews aren't as legit as they seem, but the game is just poorly developed in most technical aspects. Some would say it's intentional, but I can't see anything atractive on how the game looks and behave, especially the map and how the protagonist move through it. It looks as if it was in beta and they've mistakenly released it.

The only positive aspect I could mention is the idea of an evolving story and its consequences, but that's not enough to justify playing it, especially not for 20 euros.

Well, I think I´m openminded, always looking for new game concepts.
And yes I´m into stories, i love stories, fairy tales, urban legends, folk tales.
So I really tried to like this.
To make it short: I failed because this is no game at all,
There are no interesting game mechanics, the few it has are poorly implemented and if at all scarcely explained (like the characters stats food, sleep, health) Walking around the map is just boring and painfully slow.
The map is real bad, not even the city names can be found there nor the point of the compass.
Even if you are able to overlook this:
This game pretends to be about storytelling. And that is what hurts most:
Here this "game" disappoints all along the line.
There are only these tiny story snippets. When these "grow" by getting new versions of it by npcs on the world map
you can´t read the full new story in your inventory. Even when you tell these stories to characters, which is something like the main quest of the game, you don´t experience the full content either.
There are just some feedback lines dropped by these characters.
My recommendation: Read a good book while listening to some folk music, I bet you´ll have a much better experience.

Like many people have said, I really wanted to enjoy this game as the concept is original and the atmosphere, music, and art are all stellar. However the actual gameplay loop involves so much slow, slow walking to the same repeating soundtrack that I just couldn't keep going with it. Perhaps I'll revisit when I feel I have a lot of patience!

The aesthetics are beautiful and the stories occasionally striking, but the game itself is deeply lacking. Like so many artsy indie games, it takes pains to tell you up front that your choices matter -- but they don't. In no way whatsoever do your choices matter.

Knowing the size of the studio, my expectations were on the floor. I wasn't expecting multiple endings. I was expecting maybe a one-sentence acknowledgement in the epilogue about the path I'd taken, whether I'd collected more happy stories than sad ones or favored a particular tarot card more than the others. I would have happily accepted that. I did not receive it. Heck, even a breakdown comparing my stats to other players (percentage of stories collected?) would have been something. Nope.

Devs, stop telling us our choices matter when they don't. If there's only one ending, that's okay! If you have a specific story in mind and you know how it ends, then just tell us that. Don't play coy.

I'm still figuring out this game. The gameplay itself is quite simple--you wander around a map, collecting "stories". Then you tell those stories to special people around the map. The challenge comes from telling them what they want to hear--choosing a scary story or a funny story or a tragic story. There are lots to collect. I still haven't decided whether I like it or not. The stories themselves are clever and quick. The voice work and music is to die for--straight outta Bastion. The graphics are not so great. And my biggest complaint is that you MOVE SO SLOW. Even using the "run" functionality barely bumps you to a crawl. I'm not sure if it's fun yet. Not yet.

Not going to lie, the game does look fun, and I do intend to play it someday, but it was really just a buy in to get access to that sweet sweet Ryan Ike OST. Well worth the price just for that, and the game itself? I'm sure it's fine gravy, intro was nice, voice acting already pretty grand, writing feels weighty.

If there only was a place "Where the Water Tastes Like Wine"...

First, I like the game. The stories are great, the narrator is top-notch, and the music couldn't be better for the theme of the game. Yet, the walking simulator put a huge toll on my enjoyment of the game.

This game would have been fine as a visual novel without the need to walk around on a map.
I do understand why you would want a map here, but it could've been included in the storytelling without the walking part.
Not to sound like a lazy person, but nothing is exciting on the map that would encourage me to walk around.

I wanted to get to collecting and telling stories quicker, and I know you can hitchhike or take the train, but you still need to get to these stories on foot.
Could've booked the guy a permanent ticket on free transport before sending him off.
Whistling doesn't make it that much easier since the music will be more quiet when you do so and who wants that?!

Leaving the walking out, I did like to listen to the stories of the characters you meet.
Plain simple daily life stories that evolve as they are told over and over again.

I have yet to find out what happens if you run out of health or what not sleeping/drinking coffee would do to you.

EDIT: After being dropped from a hitchhike I ended up in the ocean with no possibility to move around or free myself any other way. I could start a new journey that would wipe all my progress. No thanks.

I couldn't get past the first 15 minutes. It's a collection of beautiful illustrations, but it's not much of a game. It's tedious, the "intro" didn't really catch me, you just keep on pressing "next" until the dialogue ends. The same with the stories I collected, After the 4th one I was already bored and kept clicking in hopes something different would happen. I assume the slow pace in which you walk is on purpose, but it just felt annoying. I'm really sorry to leave this review, the art is great and I think the concept behind the core mechanic is cool, but I don't think it's really an engaging game as is.

Tried this one out and played it to the end. Got 235/237 stories.

Unfortunately, while the whole game starts out with a cool concept and great vibe, the controls are tedious. Many of the mechanics aren't even explained. (What does sleep do???)

For a game about stories and narrative, it doesn't... tell you much. You don't even get to backtrack to recount any of the cool encounters you get, nor read the stories you've collected in full. You can also collect all the stories and end up not being able to equip most of them. Still don't know if that's a fuck up on my part or not, because once again: the survival aspect of the game and consequences for not attending to your ZZZ/sleep levels is unexplained. I suspect that is where I went wrong somehow.

Honestly, this game had a lot of potential that got lost in the weeds. I'd only recommend it to folks who are looking to wander around aimlessly in a space for a few hours, picking up inspiring story seeds - but you better write them down, because they will disappear once you have them, and you won't get to read through any of them again.

Oh, the music is great though.
