very good like old Zelda
Blossom Tales is an excellent adventure and exploration game sabotaged by the repetitive and badly designed puzzles that sometimes over stay their welcome. The same design in the puzzles can be seen in the level design for rooms so it can really compound the problem. One example, the singing stones are terrible with the RNG Simon says rounds being random every time and lasting far too long.
The story telling mechanic is fantastic and charming but will do little to motivate you after frustration sets in. It feels like the best part of the game, story telling, is used too little or timed oddly during the game.
The odd cadence for vertical progression leaves you finding the best items and abilities almost at the very end of the game. The base sword attack never gets upgraded, only the special abilities of the sword. Combat can be fun as long as you do not get stuck in the stun lock damage loops, have plenty of room between you and the enemy, and stamina to use your abilities effectively. Mechanics seem overly punishing at times or designed specifically to make your experience frustrating.
As the game goes on, the frustration of mechanics, puzzles, and missing quality of life/polish slowly but steadily overtakes everything the game does amazingly. Really disappointing for such a hopeful Zelda-like so get it on sale like I did if you wish to give it a try. 7.5/10

Good game if u want to enjoy a little story. Is for childs so dont expect a dificult game. The four sounds puzzles gave a challenge though. Game play is old zelda all around but with good graphic effects. Loved the storytelling theme.
Buy at discount.
nice zelda clone, nothing more to say to it.
had fun.

I enjoyed most of my time with the game. My only original complaint was that Lily uses pixel graphics instead of looking like she does on the box art. Unfortunately, there's a mandatory Simon Says puzzle at the end, so I had to drop out. This is a skill issue on my part, so I feel I should still recommend the game.
Although there were many fun aspects to this game, unfortunately, it's hard to actually recommend it, due to the at least as many really, really annoying aspects.
Honestly, this feels like a studio's first game, with ideas and concepts that sound awesome on paper, but not so much when actually done. I have looked, though, seems like this is their 2nd game, although their first is a different genre.
Anyway, one of the prime examples is the traveling peddler, who has campsites near each of the major towns: He's only available from 9 am to 5 pm... based on the player's device clock. Thus, if the player is also a 9 to 5 working stiff, who plays after getting home from work, they'll never see this guy. There'll only be a "Closed" sign, without any hint in game that it's not something which is later game content, but is based on the player's time, there's not even any mention of available hours at all. This is kind of a problem as this guy is the source of 2 of the heart pieces, and is the 2nd to last step of a decent-length quest chain rewarding a full heart at the end. Although I didn't have to try it myself, presumably, changing your device's time zone for a bit would be enough to get around this issue, though even having to futz with your system clock for any reason is already pretty annoying.
Another big one, in my opinion, was the Simon-Says puzzles. Most games, the sequences to be copied, start at 3, and cap out at 5 or 6. Here, the sequences start at 3, and cap out at 8 or 9. Personally, I can do up to 5 with no trouble, but at the 4th sequence in a row (6-length), my brain apparently says "I'm done!". Now, most of these puzzles are for collectibles, heart pieces and the like, but there's a 3 to 8 length sequence in the final dungeon, so even if you're not a collector, you'll still need to be able to complete puzzles that long in order to finish the game. Fortunately, other players have since figured out a workaround: you can pause/bring up the menu after every step of the sequence, which allows you to take notes on something, the recommended notation method being a 4-function calculator for ease of use and clearing after each sequence.
The room designers also seem to have been addicted to looong one tile width paths, most of which crumble after being walked on, with flying obstacles of one manner or another. Needless, to say, if you mess up, you not only take some damage, you also have to start from the beginning and wait for the path the reappear.
While those are, by far, the major annoyances, there's a decent list of minor annoyances, including things like barriers which can sometimes be shot over with the bow, but sometimes not, depending on location. Switches that have to be triggered by boomerang, which can ignore most obstacles, but whenever a switch is hit, your motion is paused to temporarily drag your view over to the changed obstacle, which then makes it hard to move in time to not retrigger the same switch on the return path. There's also several references to an item that allows normal movement on ice, and where it could be found... an item that, by all indications, does not actually exist in the game.
I ended up getting this game, having played and enjoyed the sequel. To be fair, I did have some fun playing this too, completing it with all achieves. However, I'm pretty sure that if I had played this first, I would probably not have tried my hand at the sequel.
We have a Link to the past at home
seriously thou, its okay. is no Link to the past or Alundra, but then what is?
i would compare it to the gameboy zeldas
its biggest problem is that it adds absolutely nothing new to the formula, so you might as well just play the other games
Super cute and does not take itself seriously. The story is told by the grandfather who is reading to his grandkids. It is very much a top down 2d game in the vein of older Zelda games but has managed to make me laugh several times, unlike Nintendo games. It’s not a particularly difficult game or very long but then again it’s not $60+. I highly recommend for those who love retro games!
I was pretty disappointed in the dungeons themselves. Puzzles and usage of the new mechanics gained were lacking in the first dungeon which is where I stopped. Specifically, I stopped playing when there was a duplicate fight in the first dungeon which seemed like filler.
Also bombs seem to be the best damage source in the game. They cost little magic are throw-able (i.e. ranged) and do 3-4 times the damage that your sword can do. The result is a pretty boring fighting style that makes other options less optimal and less interesting.
Maybe I will come back to this title with new eyes at some point and update this review but currently it's uninteresting to me.
Ehhhhhhhhhhhhh.......... It's not that bad.
I am one of those people that can say "I played Zelda games!!!" and sure, I can compare this game and tell you it has some of its features... But otherwise? It's not as fun for me. I don't know if it's just me or ...
It started of as fun. Don't get me wrong. But then I met the ghosts and the further I crept... The more I asked myself... "Why am I still playing this?"
I also kept trying to lock on to enemies with the boomerang.... Ha.... Ha....... No such thing.
I think that younger people, who still have their sense of wonderment and adventure, might get a kick out of this. Or if you just like playing anything that's Zelda-esque.
It's cute. The story has it's funnies and I like how it is presented...
Therefore... You shouldn't be discouraged from trying it. Especially if it appeals to ya.
I just couldn't do it. Not the way things are right now. :>
Thanksies!
A very interesting retro style game with several difficult puzzles
great and fun games
Can totally recommend the game if you like the gameboy (colour) games from the Legend of Zelda series. Havent played it through yet but will do soon so dont get confused if I "only" have a few hours of gametime.
Cute Zelda inspired game. One reviewer sums up my experience perfectly: "I wanted this game to be better than it was, yet discovered by the time I had completed it that I quite enjoyed it for what it is despite its flaws." I played for an hour and put it down because I was expecting more. About a year later I picked it back up and was more willing to accept it for what it was and ended up having a great time, beating it in about 9 hours.
I hated the Simon-esque memorization puzzles. The pattern doesn't build off itself each round like Simon does, and I don't have that kind of memory, so I resorted to using my phone to jot down the order so I could get past them. For some reason the devs put these puzzles throughout the game and I hated every one of them. All the other puzzles were fun, though.
The bosses seemed too hard until I realized I should be using items like bombs or arrows which are stronger than the sword and their range keeps you from taking so much damage. Maybe others would find that obvious. After that revelation, every boss, including the last, was almost too easy.
There are so many things to love in this game with almost (but not quite) as many flaws; but most are nitpicky. I'm hoping the sequel finds a better balance.
👍
It's a competently crafted and cute offbrand Zelda that's good fun while it lasts. For some reason it also has a strange obsession with spamming enemies and making you precisely move through one-tile-narrow paths with no room for error one or two times to many. Oh, and then there's a working-memory-based obstacle in the form of note-playing stones that probably should have been at most a one-time occurance, as it would have better been forgotten.
On a brighter note, the enemy spam does give the game some of its own flavour, especially near the end when the enemy land actually features huge camps for the evil army to live in and you have amassed lots of options for items to kill them with. Especially hillarious is the item that can summon a suprising amount of bees to fight for you, even against other bees. And the spin-jump combo is really fun to perform. In general (barring tile-walking rooms), the game get its controls just right: Moment to moment play is a blast and that's what makes me recommend it nonetheless.
I wanted this game to be better than it was, yet discovered by the time I had completed it that I quite enjoyed it for what it is despite its flaws.
The number one issue is that the dungeons are simply far too long and filled with far too many repetitive, uninspired rooms. I believe the intention here was to create a meaningful attrition challenge, but the game isn't actually designed in a way that's meant to be difficult. If it were more mechanically intensive, the design might have worked, but as it is it just feels like a meaningless slog.
If you took one look at the game from the trailer or screenshots and said to yourself, "That looks like a Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past look-alike as an indie game," you would be exactly correct. It isn't as clever as a Link to the Past, there isn't as much to do in it, the music is simply "alright." If I were to write a much longer review, I would simply bury the game in mediocrity and faint praise.
But I think that's a bit too cruel. Blossom Tales: The Sleeping King is flawed but not unfun. It's a game made for children by an indie studio, not the top of the games industry albeit more than thirty years ago. The story and characters are childish, and that's fine. It's presented as a silly bedtime story, and it lives up to that expectation, hamfisted narration and all.
9/10
