Venture Kid is a decent Mega Man clone that does its job perfectly without adding anything new to the formula. It’s basically a hybrid between the very first Mega Man and Mega Man 9 since it comes with a shop system and without the charge shot ability. The gameplay is pretty much the same as the first Mega Man except that you have some secret areas that contain collectibles that are mandatory for unlocking the final level. You also get new weapons from the protagonist Andy’s uncle after each level instead of copying the bosses' abilities since Andy is a human being instead of a robot. The story is also very simple. There’s this guy called Teklov who is the counterpart of Dr. Wily, who builds a space station for world domination by making it seem like it’s being built for peace and Andy goes after him. With the help of his sister and uncle, he manages to stop Teklov from fulfilling his evil plans. The sprites are also decent. Some look ugly, some look good, but overall, it’s good on the eyes. However, the soundtrack, on the other hand, is phenomenal.
The whole game is very straightforward with lots of predictable enemies and bosses. There is literally nothing that can challenge a seasoned platformer player. The difficulty is on point since it gradually increases with each level and reaches its climax in the last 3 levels. The achievements are very easy to obtain as you can tell from my playtime and there’s a decent amount of replay value with different difficulties with very primitive changes that boil down to bosses’ HP points and the amount of hits you can take. There’s also a New Game Plus mode that lets you use all abilities from the beginning without having to worry about their energies. The shop contains extra lives, a W tank counterpart to fill up the weapon energies individually, a one-time use HP refill, an extra hit point, and a weapon balancer. You’ll naturally buy them all by the end of the game since all you’ll be doing collecting orbs and defeating enemies; therefore, there’s no need for grinding unless you’re having a hard time with it. Unfortunately, you don’t have anything that acts as an E tank, but with how easy the game is, it’s not needed either. The one-time HP refill is more than enough.
TL;DR
A very fun and primitive Mega Man clone that does its job as intended without bringing anything new to the formula. It has predictable enemies and bosses, a shop system, a great soundtrack, and collectibles that are hidden in secret areas that serve a much bigger role in the end. If you have that classic Mega Man itch that needs scratching, Venture Kid will get the job done.
This is basically an NES Mega Man game, but easier with short stages. If you like the concept of Mega Man, but the games are too difficult for you - or you just want a platformer that has a decent challenge without going overboard - give this a try,
after beating the game i can say that i really enjoyed it. this game is quite hard so if you're new to video games i woudn't recomend it. but this game was a short but sweet game that i really enjoyed. i'd 100% recomend it if you dont know what to play.
Nice platformer with good gameplay and a decent presentation.
A very fun game for those who love Mega Man. Great work!
quite nice and enjoyable megaman clone game cute pixel art and gameplay
This is a must buy if you like Mega Man games.
This game has an improved formula of these kind of games, while being very simple.
And the character jumps as it should, not like the Nes Mega Man titles! (that short legged bastard!)
Has an amazing soundtrack too besides the full controller support.
Well done, dev!
This is such a great NES type game. It is so much fun and so classic! Works great with my Xbox Controller. Colorful, great tunes great sounds. Fun Obstacles ! Challenging and wonderfully frustrating. One great tribute to the Old Nintendo Entertainment System. Soooo Goood ! Kudos to this developer !!
It plays like an unlicensed Mega Man clone straight from the NES. There's nothing wrong with that. There are a lot of Mega Man ripoffs that are good games in their own right. Of course this doesn't make any bones about it. It's an "homage" well beyond just referencing it, the menus, the music, the characters at all times are straight from Mega Man. And that might be the only problem, by presenting itself almost as a "new Mega Man game" it sets a very high bar for itself. The controls and hit detect while fine are not as good and polished as the NES series, and overall the game does not have the depth, in level design, enemies and RPG elements, as the original Mega Man games. And again the game is just begging itself at all times to be compared to them, if you have 30+ years experience playing Mega Man and count it as one of your all time favorite most played series it's very hard not to.
But the game is very good viewing it as an amateur homage to Mega Man. In that regard it is well-made, it works, it's fun. I enjoyed it a lot. And if you're not an OG MM fan you don't have to worry about that and can just enjoy it right away.
😸👍 7.6 out of 10
PROS: Challenging, Solid Controls and Good Music
CONS: Hit-Box Issues, Useless Pickups and Lame Bosses
SUMMARY: A Very Solid and Fun Megaman 2 Clone With Great Challenge That Is Sadly Bogged Down By Several Horrible Bosses, Useless Weapon Pickups And A Hit-BoxThat Is Much Larger Than The Actual Character Sprite
This game is great. Good for any MegaMan fan. This game practically takes all signature trademarks from the game with a different look. Good music and good graphics. Overall great game. Its a bit too easy though.
There is one out lining issue. Your hit box extends outside your sprite. So you will see enemies hit you that clearly missed. This hit box also detects ground collision for platforming which can be to your benefit or detriment depending on the challenge. I have made jumps I shouldnt have and also been killed when i should have lived. This will come to light on the most hazardous of stages. In platforming games the hit box and collision should be sharp. Precision counts the most on these types of games.
Other then that, the game is great.
One of the best Mega Man like games. Just easier and with perfect controls. If you die, its because you sucked and not the games fault like it felt in Mega Man sometimes back in the days.
9.9/10
Its a little hard, and sometimes unfair (especially the minecart boss), but I like the weapons, and I enjoyed playing it. Its worth to buy on a sale.
This is the DARK SOULS of games you should only spend 1 Dollar on.
On howlongtobeat.com someone wrote this game is only 1 h for the main story.
Well, good luck with that!
I'm in 4,5 hours in and have like 2 more levels to beat.
This is the kind of game a game developer made to get revenge on his mother.
YES, it is challenging. YES, I died a lot. YES, I do like it and recommend it.
It has a cheap MEGA MAN vibe, the music is good and there are secrets.
And it is not as easy as it looks.
CAT REVIEW: My cat didn't like it. I get too anxious so he can't sit on my lap while I play it.
A fun little retro romp. While it looks, sounds and feels similar enough to the NES Mega Man games to evoke feelings of nostalgia, Venture Kid is much shorter and much more forgiving. And that's fine!
This little action platformer is a marvelous and genius callback to the glory days of 8-bit gaming. While it takes most of its cues from Mega Man, it vaguely resembles about a dozen other NES games, mostly released by Capcom and Konami. (The “castle” level and the “shield” weapon totally pay homage to Castlevania--some elements also remind me of Kid Dracula and Battle Kid... hence why they used “kid” in the name, maybe?) Like Mega Man, you get a new item after each level you pass, but unlike Mega Man, the levels have to be played in order and the items do not seem to be themed based on the level boss. Though the game-play and level design is derivative of those old games, the devs do it really well by synthesizing lots of disparate elements seamlessly into an original retro experience with clever graphics and a great soundtrack. The items and enemies are really creative and many aspects of the game-play just feel really good. I also enjoy the mechanic of finding the hidden treasures and there are a number of story and dialog elements that are hilarious to those of us who remember the aforementioned old games. Finally, this game is short and affordable. So go play it already!
You could do a lot worse when it comes to playing Rock-likes on Steam. This one handles fine, has great Norrin Radd music, and tries to incorporate some of its own level design ideas.
The only real issue is that actual Megaman collections exist on Steam, and to this point there has been no beating the original. I would also put Khimera (free) above this because it’s a more ambitious project.
Still, it’s very cheap and it plays how you would expect.
Megaman 2 meets Duck Tales. That's it! If you grew up in the NES era, this one is a must have. Great oldschool gameplay and a fantastic soundtrack.
Ugh, I really feel uneasy about deciding to give this a thumbs-down.
It does a pretty good job at emulating the original NES Mega Man games, controls well, nails the retro aesthetic well, and has great music. Overall a very polished product.
But, it's just missing that X-factor for me. Okay levels and okay bosses and low replay value outside of the hidden collectibles just aren't enough, especially for the regular price-point of $11.50. Even $2.30 felt a bit too much for me.
It's a nice little game, but it doesn't differentiate itself enough.
Well I will ask myself. Do I take Venture Kid in place of no new Mr. Gimmick games?
Yeah I will!
This game is cool enough even the Game Over music is cool. The pacing of the game is quick and nice enough that I have been unable to stop.
Would I buy a Venture Kid 2? Hell yeah I would!!
I read some reviews complaining about issues with framerate, I had no problems on here luckily. I have a 7 year old laptop. Game runs as smooth as a game could ever be, controller support is really nice! I use the 8bitdo SN30 Pro controller
