A Hole New World is a polished, solid and challenging retro-style platformer.
I found that all my weapons were useful depending on the circumstances, and the "upside-down world" gimmick helps the game feel different from similar games. The bosses get quite challenging, and there are additional challenges for those looking for something more hard core after they beat the game regularly. The pixel art and tunes are quite good, and while you have a limited number of lives, game overs are not overly punishing (you still start at your last checkpoint). Oh, and there are several secret areas to discover by checking for false walls.
I also always enjoy it when a game's credits includes pixel art portraits of the staff.
Recommended!
I have mixed feelings about this game. I grew up playing NES, so brutal NES-era old-school difficulty doesn't bother me. And i was really enjoying this game through the first 4 levels or so. But then the later levels become absurdly difficult, and not in a fun "learn to overcome the challenge" kind of way, but rather just a ridiculous and cheap "throw an absurd amount of enemies at you from all conceivable angles at once while also requiring platforming in spite of the fact that you get that Castlevania-esque knockback every time you get hit" kind of way, which just isn't fun.
There are some smaller issues, as well. It's cool that you get different potions/attacks, but the way it is implemented leaves a bit to be desired. Rather than having an array of useful attacks to freely switch between as needed/desired, it's basically just "you need to use the attack you got at the end of Level 1 for Level 2, then you use the attack you get at the end of Level 2 for Level 3, etc etc." You get a new weapon, you pretty much need to use it for the very next level, and then you basically don't ever need it again. And as others have pointed out, it doesn't feel like they took as much advantage of the reverse mechanic as they could/should have. There are a few areas where you are required to go underground, but outside of those specific areas there is basically zero reason or incentive to ever do so.
I'll still give it a Thumbs Up, because i don't regret playing it, i enjoyed some of it quite a bit, and it does have some good ideas. But i would probably give it a Side Thumb if possible.
That being said, i would love to see a sequel where they maybe flesh out and refine some of the ideas, because i feel like it has the potential to be pretty fantastic.
I cleared this game once, and my completionist blood compels me to at least attempt to get a few more achievements, but after that gruelling experience I either need a long rest or a bad-indulgence to bribe me into playing this game for any amount more.
Look, the premise isn't bad: the actual game and its "design" are. It feels like the optimal strategy is to inch your way forward very slowly while using the charge attack to hit things in the distance for double the damage of any of your other quirky attacks and it looks like whoever made this game thinks that "N*ntendo Hard" is the best thing ever by spamming enemies in certain sections with or without damaging terrain nearby, and the impression I got from the bosses was that their patterns were chosen to be extremely unforgiving with very few safe zones without taking into account player movement at all. Coupled with the "new game plus" mechanic, it is obvious in hindsight that they expect you to have all the unlocks already gotten to even navigate all of the areas in what is a very linear and ruthless game.
Also, the final boss has the same name as an ancient board game, so don't forget to put the damned quotes when searching for his Lordness to get inspiration on how to deal with the obviously BS patterns that he has after realising that your lightning potion needs to be selected to do any damage as a start, when it is the worst ranged option you have and the colour purple is used in the game without the potion association all over the place except this part.
I don't know. I feel angry. Angry not because I bought this, but maybe because when I bought it near launch I wasn't quite expecting the artificial difficulty in what looked like a cool retro title going for a gimmick that honestly ends up being a pain in the ass with the blind exchanges of what the other side's evil population is doing at that time when you jump into or are forced to engaging with the pits (which, to be fair, there are no "instant death pits", but I fear that it's only because this mechanic was put into the game and not because they didn't think of putting it in).
Oh, and, in a game where they are throwing "infinite" enemies at you as a form of difficulty? Good effing luck doing the "kill no enemies in the entire game except bosses" achievement without cheating.
And double "oh": the double jump? You get that only at the final stretch of the game. Well played; I learned to not trust this dev team with any further design decisions in their other games if they ever make more.
A Solid Platformer,
Having a lil bit of a hard time with the Final Boss but it doesn't quite feel too cheap I'm trying not to spam the slide to kill them. The game itself works a pretty interesting gimmick when it comes to having the duality between the surface world and the reverse gravity underworld. The controls for the underworld get a little weird at times because up and down is still the name despite the physics behind reversed so it takes a moment for your brain to get used to it.
Solid animations, hit boxes, sound, and music. I'm kinda wondering what is even the point of the fire/ice potion as it's completely diagonal and elemental property changes on impact.
Levels are deceptively bigger than I would think.
The game is modertly hard. The last boss almost make me give up. But then I refined my strategy of kicking him in the shin, and I won. I enjoyed the rest of the game too, but it was a little confusing. I was expecting something more like mega man, instead it felt more like a maze in some levels. But, I figured it out eventuially. I might play it again. We shall see.
Interesting game, it's a mix betwen MegaMan power collection after defeated bosses, and Ninja Gaiden with it's annoying enemies spams, spawns and huge kickback after getting hit. Boss fights are ultra unfair, maps are convoluted and packed with unvunerable enemies flying towards you through walls.
It's focusing too much to be a frustrating/hard game rather than enjoyable. In my opinion levels are badly designed, good thing there are bunch of checkpoints and unlimited contiunes, but your life will be drained quite fast.
My review is NEUTRAL. Game doesn't deserve to get Negative review and Positive either.
It's just "okay" game, music, concept and graphics are good. Fun game somehow, but I've expected something else.
This is a really nice retro platformer inspired by 8 bit era! If you like challange then prepare to die! The cool mechanic here that's explained from the first level is the ability to walk both normal and "inverted" gravity levels. I think first two levels are okay but definitely the weakest. Then the game becames so much better! New powers at first are hard to understand but really satisfying to master. The game starts normal but later gets really hard. Final stages will make you try a lot. And the final bosses are so hard. Specially the last one. That tooked me hours of dying again and again.
Once you passed the main campaing you unlock NG plus, Boss Rush and a challange level.... I beated NG plus which makes good subtle changes to main campaing.
The challange level it's INSANE! An hour long level with only one continue. The difficulty here scales truly to the hardest levels on NES era like Castlevania 3! It tooked me hours to beat and I end up sweating a swearing A LOT! Overall it's a really good extra!
I only can disagree with Boss Rush mode! I really tried to beat for hours trust me! Aside from ridiculous archivements (which I really don't care to obtain in any game ever) I completed nearly every challange except for Boss Rush mode. If it only replenished your life meter after certains fights then the experience would be fair! Bosses are hard but good in main game enough. Having to defeat all of them with one life it's beyond me. I couldn't pass True Prius. Dragon boss it's so broken. Even in my best attemp they always hit me at least 1 time! So impossible to evade the attacks when the four of them are shooting! Then some attack patterns like the final final attack in the last form of the flying demonic girl it's frame perfect jump and I couldn't make it! It's a shame because I really wanted to fight TRUE BADUK so bad! I ended watching the only video on internet that shows him as you can only fight him in the end of Boss Rush mode!. And bear in mind that years ago I managed to beat Ninja Gaiden 1 on NES. That was totally insane. But I found this too a really cruel challange definitely not for me!
The music here it's beatiful and 8 bit era! The graphics also! Gameplay's good and so level desing! Despite my cons I really enjoyed this game! It deserves more reviews for sure! You feel the love of the team for retro games here! Don't let your controller rest and give this nice game a try!
A Hole New World looks great, and... that's it.
Elephant in the room : how good is the gravity inversion mechanic handled ? Well, I'll keep the answer to myself, otherwise I might end up breaking a lot of Steam guidelines. I honestly can't imagine how people have tested that and decided to leave it as is.
Plus, I mean, there's definitely enough content here to make a good platformer, so you don't need a gimmick, especially if it's a half-baked one.
Enemy design is weak. They're typically either completely harmless or extremely frustrating. SFX are irritating. And the level design is absolutely terrible. While it fell under the "unremarkable" category for the first two levels, it then starts to become really dull, and unintelligently filled with enemies, on top of being needlessly labyrinthine. It looks completely random at times.
Another thing that feels random is the perks you unlock. The first three weapons are really not fun to use at all, and it's a chore to hit certain enemies with them. Now, at some point towards the end of the game, you unlock all at once a double-jump, a downward hit, and a weapon that's just plain better than the previous ones in most situations. I should precise this weapon just consists of a regular, horizontal projectile.
Finally, I found most of the music tracks to be uninspired.
Whoever did the graphics for this game should have picked different partners (or focused solely on that, I didn't look up how many people worked on this.)
SO MUCH POTENTIAL... WASTED POTENTIAL
Sadly I can't recommend this game. I'm sure that, with some polishing, it could be a great game but unfortunately there are many unfair things in it that ruin the player's experience. Just to mention a few:
- This has to be the very first game I've witnessed to have a save point system that is outright detrimental to the player. One wrong activation are you're set to ditch the game and start a whole new one from the very beginning.
- Some jumps or movements must be performed at almost pixel or frame perfect rate. Certain bosses are far from fun because of this: you must repeat the same set of precise actions at a very specific pace to beat them.
- Some achievements are absurd. How are you supposed to kill every single enemy in the game when some of them get missing out of the screen or don't appear? How do you find every NPC when they actually don't show up where they should? I've had to start over again and again many times because of these kind of bugs.
- Level and enemy designs are probably the weakest points of the game. Progression feels like a chore and the upside down areas, while being a cool gimmick and a good challenge, are too vast and in the long run become an annoyance.
Still, it has an enormous potential. I really hope the developers fixed this game. I'd be more than eager to give it a positive review.
This game is very similar to Mega man, which is what I liked. The gameplay length is short but its really good. Boss fights are pretty challenging as well. The obstacles in this game are pretty simple, you make your way through and fight enemies. Most of the time you dont have to worry about falling to your death because every hole you see and fall into, you get to the other side. Which makes the levels more interesting to explore. There are powerups in this game and like Mega man, you have to kill bosses in order to obtain it. It can get challenging eventually through the levels too.
It's like Mega man and Ghosts Goblins smooshed together, it's difficult but fun. the kind of challenge that you feel good about overcoming.
Remember playing nes games when you got a weapon that sucks to hit the enemies? This whole game is like that, all weapons are horrible. Also the game overuse a simplistic anoying flip screen mechanic.
Pros:
-Feels like an NES game for the most part
-Has some good pixel art( compared to most of steam pixel art indie games)
Cons:
- Mostly trial and error game
-Bosses were a mess. Bullshit attacks, inconsistent hitboxes, not fun to play againts, weren´t mechanically very deep, and most of all they weren´t memorable. Final boss had shit hitboxes, unfair stun-lock mechanic and wasn´t very hard. It only had bullshit mechanics
-Story was interesting but there was no development to it. Characters were just mostly there and didn´t appoint to anything. No interesting moments to point out, no interactions with the characters, no stakes were at hand since why would I, as the player, give a shit since none of th characters do anything meaningful.
- Most of the attacks fly in an arc. This would be fine if there would someone kind of normal punch or weapon attack that would be easy to use and fast. I know theres a kick attack but that does not work very well against enemies, since most of them are airborne.
Potion 1 is useless after world 3, potion 2 is the worst attack in the game, potion 3 has freeze and fire form but that sucks, since the potion has to hit a wall to change the effect, potion 4 is the best potion since it flies in a straight line. Most of the potions are rendered useless against the bosses( except the final boss) because all of the potions are weaker than charging a fairy attack that you get in the beginning of the game. You can´t spam the potion bottles because all of the bosses have invincibility frame that lasts for 3 seconds.
- Music sounds generic and has no punch to it.
Don´t buy this game. There are better ones out there.
Giving this a thumbs down makes me sad, but I can't recommend this game.
The short of it is that the creative direction, art, and innovation were amazing, and honestly what caught my eye to buy the game; this was consistently great throughout.
Gameplay execution, enemy, fight, and level design had major flaws that made it boring, unfair and frustrating in ways that it shouldn't, such as the necessity for frame perfect execution of the slide kick if you want to use it as intended (and as is necessary for blocking the charge of the final boss), or random instances where your invulnerability suddenly doesn't matter.
I am excited to see the next game, but beating this game just did not feel good.
Gameplay : 4/5
Sound and Music : 3/5
Visuals : 3/5
Replayability : 2/5
Story : 2/5
Overall : 2.8
I mean, it’s a pretty solid game, there’s just not much to it. The gameplay is good but suffers from AI exploits. It gets pretty hard near the end of the game and instead of relying on skill to pass it I had to exploit the range in which an enemy even notices you or I just ran right past them. Every level is unique though albeit it probably wasn’t hard to do that considering there’s like 5 levels. The sound and music is good but nothing memorable. The visuals are good but nothing memorable. The story could be good but nothing feels like it has reason or depth, everything is just there cause it looks cool. The major villain’s reason for being there is described as “he found a way to our world somehow”. I don’t have any desire to replay it but there is a newgame plus mode and I saw there is extra bosses or something you could fight so at least there is something there for people who do want to replay it. It’s certainly not a bad game, and the gimmick of flipping upside down is neat and all, it’s just there’s not much to it.
If you want your nostalgy crawling into your veins, thats your game. Playing A Hole New World is like using a time machine; it has all the elements of old school games, jugability, story, graphics, music...
I enjoyed it with all my heart. I recovered the real meaning of desesperation in this game, just like in Megaman or other classics. The last scenario is purely infernal, in the good meaning. The bosses are wonderful, with a real difficult level.
The mechanics are fun and its replayeable so, what are you waiting?
If you want to have a good -or infernal- time and raise your salt levels over the stocks, buy this game and play it. Full recommended.
Yay, this game is so exciting! I love just about everything about it ^^ My favourite part is the music and the upside down world, which sometimes make it like 2 games in one! The bosses are quite hard to beat, but with some practice it works. Recommend it to everyone :)
I'm not sure how I originally found out about this game, but I liked what I saw and have been following the developers on Facebook. I generally liked the aesthetic, the upside-down-world aspect (which kind of reminded me of Battle of Olympus) and the gameplay that looked like an interesting take on Mega Man.
Overall, I've been happy with the game. It controls quite well, even in the upside-down-segments (which I tend to have a lot of trouble with it games). The level design is interesting -- it is obviously planned out, but also has kind of a random-feeling quality to it. Some levels are fairly straightforward left-to-right affairs, while others require some backtracking. I've enjoyed the weapon system too -- you get new abilities by beating bosses and can switch on the fly, ala Mega Man. Unlike Mega Man, there's no weapon charge meter, so you can use them to your heart's content. I've actually found the 4 I've found to be different enough to be worth switching between fairly consistently, it's not just a matter of picking the right thing for a boss.
On that point, the bosses have all been pretty cool. They have patterns, but there is a lot of variety in those patterns. So I've found them to be challenging and largely fair. I am stuck on one boss now, but I know with some time I'll overcome it. This is made a lot less frustrating because while the game is difficult, it does have checkpoints -- I can keep retrying a boss easily, the main loss is that my score resets to zero (my impression is that this also affects the ending?).
There are some things I don't love about it. The early stages, in particular, have some fairly busy backgrounds that are of a similar tone to the foreground -- so I've had a hard time differentiating between things. This was especially hard for me in a forest area where I was dealing with spiders jumping in and out of the underground world because I could barely tell where they were. I was glad to find this to be less of an issue later in the game.
There are also situations where you just feel overwhelmed with enemies. It's certainly possible to overcome them, but having 10 clouds shooting icicles at you while dodging two other things is a bit much. That said, the fact that enemies don't instantly respawn offscreen makes this a LOT more managable than it would have been in the NES days. In fact, they don't respawn at all: there are a couple of achievements revolving around killing every monster in the stages.
In the end though, I've enjoyed what I've played of the game and think it's a good example of its genre. The main game looks to be about 90 to 120 minutes if you blast through it, but there are items to collect and other modes that round out the package. So I feel like it's worth the $10. Looking forward to finishing it and checking out the New Game+ option.
I'm a big fan of retro Platformer, so when I first A Whole New World it immediately stole my heart. The awesome art style and the catchy soundtrack combined with the upside down world make this game to one of the best Platformer I have played in years. Yeah, it is pretty hard - BUT never feels unfair. If you die it's because you lack some skills or because you haven’t figured out the right strategy to defeat the boss. So if you up for a challenge, go get A Whole New World!
A great little retro platformer that feels like a cross between Megaman and Castlevania with a sprinkle of Zelda.
If you like Shovel knight, nice pixel art and tight controls then this game is definitely for you!
I love this game. It's like... Ghosts n' Goblins and Ninja Gaiden (NES) mixed with some Metal Slug and cute random NPCs. I've only just started but in less than an hour this is already one of my favorite 2D games. It's really fun.
It has full controller support, the controls are crisp and responsive, and the art is great because of how unique it is. The art mixes perfectly, so each background, character, tree, etc, feels like it belongs in the same game-wrold.
They've even got an opening sequence telling a story, speed-run options, and from what I've heard, a new-game+ option, not to mention special attacks and a reverse world you reach by falling into some holes in the ground. This allows you to avoid some obstacles in the above-world. The presense of this other world actually fits into the storyline.
It's got achievements, and creative NPCs with animations. The world isn't static.
Any fan of platformers should get this, and even those who aren't should give it a try.
