GOOD
Nice game, a bit short but the game structure is very interesting.
Really dark... reminds Tim Burton style and the Little Nightmare game, but with cool puzzle mechanic... with a lot of hidden things
Surprisingly fun
DARQ is a fantastic 2D side-scrolling puzzle-platform adventure game where you guide a little boy through a mysterious and sometimes scary dream world. By defying gravity, walking on walls and manipulating the environment, you must solve different types of puzzles and avoid enemies along the way.
With its nice puzzles, great atmosphere, nice graphics and gameplay, DARQ is certainly fun to play and I can only recommend it to any (hard-boiled) puzzle-adventure fan.

Lloyd is literally me... kid is so tired all the time. ʘ︵ʘ
If you're in the mood for a Dark (pun intended) puzzle game, this is the game for you!!! ☜(ˆ▿ˆc)
I appreciated the lovely art style; it's very Tim Burton-esque. While I wouldn't say that the atmosphere and style of Darq is wholly original (honestly what is these days), it is rare enough that it's worth exploring. The game is mostly familiar puzzles but given a quite literal *twist*.
It absolutely nailed the visuals which is monochrome with some colour touches, the atmosphere which smells like death and darkness, and the surreality of being in a nightmare which is very well designed and detailed. Taken as a whole, I like the game, but my biggest complaint is that I just wish there was more of it, which I suppose is a positive.
¯\_( ͡▧ ͜ʖ ͡▧)_/¯
What I really really DID enjoy was the surprising amount of effective scares throughout the experience. Even though the chapters are fairly short (as I've said), the Stress and Anxiety and Suspense of being trapped in a nightmare you get during the playtime is DISGUSTING! ♥
For the gameplay: The main element in this game is perspective; it's biggest gimmick is that you can walk on walls and ceilings which re-orientates the gravity and you can also move forwards or backwards by pulling levers and many other things that are introduced throughout the chapters. Although initially the puzzles seem to be more complicated, their solution ends up being too straight forward. Starting from the first available action, every next one comes almost automatically until your solving the puzzle like its second nature to you.
For the plot: There’s very little in the way of narrative build-up that makes your connection to this world and our main character, Lloyd, rather flimsy (I would've hoped for a more elaborate story). This is only hurt further by its short runtime (I know I've said it's
In the end, this is one of those titles that doesn’t necessarily need to tell some lore when the world itself is enough to keep you intrigued. Games like this can easily fail to convey their story and start to feel pretentious as a consequence. BUT I'm very happy to say that this game didn't feel that way at all.
♥ Hehe ♥
I sadly did encounter a few bugs while playing it. It was during The Tower DLC where I would get stuck floating mid air when I was trying to stick to the walls. I would just float like a butterfly and it was extremely irritating. I had to restart my game
(≖_≖ )
So, I saw this game on Steam Greenlight a few years ago and bought it because I had heard of how pretty awesome the dev was for declining the CEO of Epic Games. t(>.AND I just ended up playing it recently lol... but fr though support the dev!! It took him three years to make this & you get free DLCS on top of that, what else could you ask for? Support developers who support their customers!
And as the saying goes: Quality over Quantity! I GUESS
≧◉◡◉≦
In a nutshell: It's stylistic, spoopy, but all too7/10
Great puzzle indie game. Riddles are not very hard if you can think in 3D space. And the sound are worth a special attention. it's create the right atmosphere. Thx for the good game %)
Really enjoyed the puzzle/logic levels.
A little more colour would have been nice (but might be the style), but overall fun and entertaining.
It's wonderful to see a game developer with integrity. He cares about his creative vision, treats video games as the art they deserve to be treated as, puts effort into his craft, and puts thought into his players having fun with his game.
Compared to many other indie developers (Glumberlands, DDreams Games, Pixel Sprout, Birthday Suit Games, Digital Homicide, etc.), Wlad Marhulets and Unfold Games understand that transparency and mutual trust with one's audience is key to a long-term career in the indie game scene.
His game is a wonderful work of art in the genres of psychological horror, puzzle, and stealth. I look forward to a successful career for someone who exemplifies what it truly means to be an indie game developer.
Very cool puzzle game! great sound and visuals. Any fan of Little Nightmares, INSIDE, LIMBO would probably love this game!
Amazing on deck.
an old woman chased me multiple times
11/10
its really good, i dont see enough people talking about it, i love the concept and the idea!
i bought this game way back in support of the devs refusing the epic exclusivity offer. finally got around to playing it, pretty good but short puzzle game. i still need to play the free dlc levels but i would say this is worth picking up.
Nice little spooky atmospheric puzzle platformer similar to Little Nightmares. It is over relatively quickly as well, takes only about 4 hours to finish the main game plus the two DLCs, which could be a good or bad thing depending on how you see it. I personally enjoy shorter games that respect your time. Only thing I didn't like were the puzzles in the second DLC for the following: Insane amounts of backtracking with the head considering you must move the head everywhere and have to keep running back to those ground ports. Even hotswapping to the head from anywhere with button would have been too much backtracking.
Sights & Sounds
Hues are for suckers
- Even the oldest color monitors were 4-bit, permitting nerds in the 80s to finally see in a stunning array of 16 colors in an incredible 100x100 resolution without leaving the darkness of their mothers' basements (provided they were willing to fork over the money for an expensive adapter)
- Eventually they kept raising two to higher and higher powers until we stopped thinking about color depth altogether. Darq said "fuck all that" to the decades of technological advancement and decided that shades of gray were good enough
- I suppose that Darq isn't entirely black and white; as you progress, you'll get a subtle pink hue imparted by an emergency light, notice the almost imperceptible yellow glow of a sodium lamp, or spot the pale blue of a sparking wire
- And while the world never really burst into a wide spectrum of colors, your eyes will eventually adjust to pick out the muted palette of some interior settings. It's a strange visual effect. It's almost as though the colors are muted disproportionately to the light levels. Very eerie
- Another noticeable bold choice Darq makes is the near absence of a soundtrack. Oh, sure, if you go look it up, you'll find a nice track listing of haunting orchestral music, but little to none of that shows up until you see the credits roll
- The sound design, conversely, is very in-your-face. Beyond the nearly constant machine droning emitted by the various puzzle contraptions you encounter, you'll hear tons of squeaking gears, crunchy footsteps, and a healthy dose of "Inception noises as you make your way through the game. It sounds like lower frequencies are boosted and maybe compressed, making them sound more punchy and distorted
Story & Vibes
Tim Burton presents
- Being an artsy puzzle game, there's no overt narrative in Darq. You just go through your your moody, surreal puzzles in a dimly-lit world until the game ends more or less where it began
- Instead, Darq is all about the vibes. The cacophonous sound effects and lack of light build an unsettling atmosphere, as does the absence of music
- The creepy air ramps up a bit once you begin encountering the blind, pale, twisted inhabitants that would like nothing more than to wring the protagonist's impossibly skinny neck
- Speaking of the protagonist, the exaggerated size of his facial features and head in proportion to his rail-thin frame reminded me of characters from The Nightmare Before Christmas and James and the Giant Peach
Playability & Replayability
A new perspective
- Darq is a puzzle adventure game where there isn't really a stated goal other than to move forward. You start off in your bedroom (serving as a hub world), go to bed, and wake up in a new puzzle-filled reality in a spooky setting. At the end of the stage, you return to your room to repeat the process anew
- On the whole, the puzzle variety was quite good. I was pleasantly surprised to find that there was little to no block-pushing mechanics, which are the definitive hallmark of an uncreative puzzle game
- Instead, Darq will test your perception. Our protagonist has the very interesting ability to walk up or down whatever surface is in front of him. See a wall? No bother! Just plant a foot on it and keep walking. The screen will rotate to keep your character vertical
- This perception-shifting meshes well with the other more traditional puzzle elements like switches, item assembly, sequencing, and timing. The little gameplay twist makes for some truly clever puzzles
- The most notable of these, in my view, is the level taking place at the intersection of two city streets. At the middle of the intersection is a pair of hanging rings; grabbing these and pressing left or right will shift the world 90 degrees, permitting you to see a single side of one of the streets depending on the way you rotate. Very cool
- Remember those monsters I mentioned? Yeah, you'll need to avoid them. The good news is that they're blind, but the bad news is that they're very capable of hearing you. You'll need to sneak using the dedicated control to get past them unnoticed
- I got all of the achievements in the main game as well as all of the non-speedrunning achievements in the DLC included in the Complete Edition, so I'm not feeling a replay anytime soon. I just don't get much enjoyment out of speedrunning
Overall Impressions & Performance
First try
- It's hard not to be impressed by the fact that this was the developer's first game. I've tried a number of people's first Unity projects, and I rarely come away with this positive of an impression
- He clearly had a vision in mind when putting together this game. The strong artistic choices that are simultaneously minimalist in most ways but excessive in some make this a memorable game
- And it's always nice to get a breath of fresh air in the puzzle scene. The most similar game I can think of that matches Darq in tone and gameplay is Creaks, though I can see some similarities to PLAYDEAD titles like Limbo and Inside
[*] The game performed quite well on the Steam Deck. I'm not sure why, but these compact, artsy puzzle titles feel perfect for the platform
Final Verdict
7.0/10. The strong audiovisual design plays well with Darq's creative puzzle mechanics, putting an interesting twist on a well-trodden genre. While some lore, narrative, or objective could have enhanced the experience a little, this is still a worthwhile experience for those looking for something a little creepy and mysterious
DARQ is a 2.5D puzzle game with a spooky feel. You play as a character who is exploring their dreams, where they can walk on walls and ceilings to reach different places and find items to solve small puzzles. Solving these smaller puzzles leads to bigger ones, and once you solve those, you either unlock a new area or get an item you need for another puzzle.
The gameplay is simple. You can walk, run, jump, and interact with things to use items from your bag or activate levers and switches. The game is short and easy to play. It takes about two hours to finish all seven chapters, plus another hour to play through the two extra expansions that come with the game.
Most of the puzzles aren’t too hard, but I liked the expansions more because they had a bit more challenge. If you’re into games like (Little Nightmares) or (Inside), DARQ will be a fun experience. I recommend buying it when it’s on sale because the game is pretty short.
Great game, but it is a bit shorter than it should be imo. DLC's are not bad as well but I don't think they were as fun as main game.
A very fun little creepy puzzle game! Great unsettling surreal environments and encounters, does an excellent job at feeling like a lucid nightmare. For serious horror game fans, you likely will want to search elsewhere for something to leave you with actual nightmares (although one particular section featured an incredibly effective scare that left me very spooked, but impressed) but for those who want a creepy, quick game to play in an evening, this will definitely scratch the itch.
NICE ATMOSPHERIC PUZZLE. RECOMENDED. SILENT HILL VIBES PROVIDED
This game is an absolutely incredible way to spend a few hours giving your brain a workout. Jump-scares are present, though not to a ridiculous degree, and the developer behind the game couldn't have more passion behind his project. It was a lot of fun working with Vlad to voice Lloyd, and I cannot wait to see what kind of work he has in store for us to come.
I can't remember anything about my time with this game after a few years. Do with that what you will
Excelent game
Oh the screams I screamed while playing this 😅. The game mechanics in this are really neat, I don't think I've played a game like this before. I loveloveloooove the art style and overall mood of this game. I just saw there was DLC and now I'm excited to check it out! I definitely recommend this beauty.
Simple to play once you figure out the walking around walls and the pulling leversbto move in and out of layers. Mostly a lot of findvitem in one place and bring to another. Keep calm and don't lose your head until you have to.
Alright, I don't know how but this game got out of my radar when I am the one who loves these unique kind of puzzle games. Well so to say its a very big title. I will not completely say its unique maybe trailer might make you feel that way, but one thing can be said that it is definitely a engaging one finding a balance between head scratching moment and "ahh" moment without getting into frustration moment.
Design wise: was little disappointing as at the end these platformer puzzle game ends up being a find an object game, but the visuals, mechanics and the reaction of environment with respect to the puzzle around was something that i alwasy looked forward to whenever a new chapter started.
Sound design is the star of the game and a person who loves sound and music, for me it was brilliant. Except one thing, the sound was screaming for the attention. Making a game were sound is not noticeable and natural is the best type of sound design according to me and in that case this game takes a step back.
Over all amazing experience, sound, music, loved the length and was very engaging.
Great puzzles, quick, and enjoyable. Easy Recommendation!
There are some unique and fun uses of perspective that permeate the level design of this puzzle game. But it rings hollow in the lack of any substantial story or atmosphere built in the game. Just some TIm Burtonesque setting and hint of dreamscapes and then you do the puzzles. I wouldn't recommend unless you just want a decent puzzle game fix.
Short, but entertaining.
DARQ doesnt qualify for my normal expectation of 1hr of playtime for 1€ I spend on a game, but I'd argue its worth it in the same sense as "What remains of Edith Finch" is. DARQ invites you to a very unique puzzle experience with a couple of jumpscares within the well crafted nightmare of the main character Lloyd.
Awesome game.
Yes.
