Описание

While out exploring the galaxy with MOM, BUD’s parental spaceship, she goes to pieces. Like, literally – MOM’s all over the place. The positioning of that moon was terribly inconsiderate. Now her ship parts are scattered far and wide across an entire alien planet so rich in flora and fauna it would make even the most jaded galactic gardener’s head spin. It’s up to BUD to collect all her parts and get them back to the moon.

  • Join this adorable wobbly robot on his fantastical acroBUDic adventure to the moon.
  • Collect MOM’s ship parts with the help of your new friend POD. She likes planets. A lot.
  • Explore an entire alien planet filled with excitement and wonder. And a Flungus.
  • Walking’s overrated. Tuck BUD into Ball mode to boost, bounce and roll around the planet.
  • Take to the air and soar between floating islands like a big metal bird with the Power Glider.
  • Exercise those green fingers and overcome obstacles by spawning any plant you’ve found with the Floradex 3000.
  • Ride giant Starplants into the sky (yes, we know what they look like…)

Grow Up: A Letdown

I was initially excited to play this game as I had previously played Grow Home, which I thought was a simple game that I feel needed more out of its gameplay. Unfortunately, the sequel I thought would be an exciting venture proved to be something not worth my time. I did not complete the game to its full completion but I think that serves in my message about why I think this game is not something I would recommend. I will discuss art direction, gameplay, sound design and my overall thoughts.

Art Direction

The art direction has a charm in its initial stages of playing the game, but after an hour, it begins to bog down on my curiosity to explore the planet. Although the biomes may change, the overall feel of each area doesn't make me feel like it's worthwhile going places. The polygonal artstyle feels rather cheap and uninspired. I think something more gritty and dark would've served a game like this much better. There are no deep forests, sickening swamps, salt flats, or volcanic plains to immerse oneself, just the sme boring, overly brightened environments we've seen many times. A saving grace for an expanded art direction would've been the inclusion of the vast oceans, but because our protagonist cannot swim or even touch water, this aspect is absent entirely.

Gameplay

This is what hurts most of this game's enjoyability for me. The main problem is the control, and I can't describe this aspect justice but I can get close. The controls are floaty, and looser than they ought to be. You will be walking and, if you approach the edge of a cliff, you best believe you are going to falling off. As you progress through the game, you collect crystals which help empower you with abilities such as a jetpack and hang glider. Although this sounds like a fun upgrade, the flying feels too easy to exploit and falls into what I would refer to as dominant strategy (a common element in game theory). I found myself always using the ability to fly over the entire map to my advantage. The problem with this overpowered ability is that once the ability is understood, I felt that the only thing worth doing was getting ship pieces, a necessary aspect of the game to "complete" it, but more on that later. When I wasn't flying over the entire map, I was climbing and scaling terrain, and this aspect, although creative (this was one year before Breath of the Wild's climbing), it definitely suffers from the floaty controls. There is no type of stamina or danger that makes these climbs feel rewarding or treacherous. The main aspect of this game is exploration but I never felt compelled to do this; I just wanted to complete the game as fast as humanly possible.

Sound Design

I want to keep this section short as best I can. The sound design is nothing short of irritating. You will find beacons on your journey that help you teleport across the map, but they are accompanied with this obnoxious, droning alarm sound. It feels more rewarding to stop the sound of an untapped teleporter than it is to gain access to that area. And as for music, there isn't anything of note.

Overall

I wanted to like this game but I lost interest after gaining enough to fly over the map. When I completed the quest for ship parts, I was presented with being told that I needed to collect everything I missed and I found that to be incredibly off putting. I promptly told myself I was done with the game. Some games are fun because of the journey and not the destination, but Grow Up was not a game that was worth the journey or the destination. However, I will say if you are a fan of collectathons, then the games numerous collectables should keep people occupied for a long, long time. This game isn't good, nor is it bad, but it leans closer to bad than good for me.

4/10, Fair

The Mobility and creativity is so freeing, progression is so smooth. All the useful abilities and cosmetics you get are a treat. World exploration on an actual entire planet with a moon to entice travel. I really do wish more people knew about this game. A real feel good vibe.

Grow up is a good open exploration platformer.

+ Charming style (character, flora, fauna)
+ Great world - a freely and fully explorable entire planet with different biome themes and extensive verticality
+ Diverse flora with utility, not necessary but possible to use and support
+ Diverse mechanics
+ Good progression through collectibles and unlocks
+ Good amount of content
* A lot of verticality
* Story playthrough ~ 4 hours 30 min, considerably more to complete everything ; Main + extra ~ 5 hours 30 min; 100 % 10 hours
- Messy controls and camera controls - both are fine for the most part, but especially once you have the glider with boosting it becomes messy
- Suboptimal guidance

Controls and camera were fine and acceptable for the most part. But messy and annoying when climbing on ceilings and when flying. Sometimes I was boosting down instead of up for unclear reasons. Sometimes it's neither clear nor as intended which direction you fly towards when changing movement or or camera directions.

I found the guidance at first too much but then too little. Some guidance unlocked before its time. Even long after objectives had been completed, random guidance (side dialogue) showed up for them.

Grow up captivated me when I started playing. I am recommending it despite its excusable flaws. There's a lot of enjoyable things to explore.

Builds on the first game in every aspect amazingly. The coolest part of this game is that none of the space is faked, if you see something super far away, you can go to it. Unless you have a fear of heights or giant things this game is very peaceful. In fact I would recommend this game to help them get over said fears because the views in this game are beautiful. The sheer scale of everything is simply remarkable. Would highly recommend this game. Bonus if you want some nostalgia too as this game gives off massive 2016 vibes.

Grow Up is the follow up to 2015s Grow Home. I got these games as a bundle and while I recommend you play them in release order, there's no wrong way to play them.

Grow Up is like Grow Home but more. Mechanically this game features the same climbing, scanning, exploring as Grow Home. But there's a much larger world with biomes, more movement abilities and the challenges littered all over the world. And we can go to the moon!

I really enjoyed a lot of the mechanics in this game. You can roll up into a ball and fling yourself to other platforms, which is super satisfying to do correctly. You can plant seeds to grow helpful plants. And gliding around this world to observe all the plants you sprouted is a good look back onto your journey in this world.

This game inspired in me the same kind of joy and serenity as Grow Home. I love this and highly recommend it. It's a brief experience that's well worth the money.

I really like this series, but this game had things that weren't great. Some bugs make achievements impossible, unless you want to restart your save file, which is annoying. That aside, There are a number of power ups that make no sense to me, like the ball form. Why? It seemed to have no purpose. Also many of the plants were infuriating to figure out how to use. It was easier to just fly around, instead of use the plants for travel. Overall, I did like this game, so I do recommend it to people. Great sequel, if a bit frustrating.

Like its predecessor this is a short, simple, easy platforming game about collecting various items. This time the world is bigger by adding different biomes that make its already charming artsytle shine even more. All gameplay and mechanics have been improved from "Grow Home" resulting in a more fluid gameplay. In summary: a really fun 3D platformer that can be beaten in a couple of hours.

Loved Grow Home years ago when it came out, and loved this one too, however...

Definitely a progression imbalance. Once you get the glider it's over. You can easily go to the moon and get to high-up asteroids and floating islands without blooming star flowers. I enjoyed the pod mini games. I loved everything, but I feel like the mechanics and progression need to be nerfed. Then again, I'm in my mid 20s and this game is better suited for kids lol

I got every single achievement and never had any difficulty. I didn't get the same excitement I got in Grow Home, but again, probably because I'm an adult.

Good game, 10/10

Grow Up builds wonderfully on the foundation set by its predecessor, Grow Home. This sequel takes the whimsical exploration to new heights—literally! The vibrant world is more expansive and filled with delightful surprises, encouraging you to climb, glide, and explore to your heart's content.

The controls feel smooth and intuitive, making it a joy to navigate the beautifully crafted environments. I love how you can experiment with the various gadgets and abilities to reach new areas, which adds a fun layer of creativity to the gameplay. The sense of discovery is ever-present, and each new biome offers unique challenges and visuals.

The charming art style and playful soundtrack create an inviting atmosphere that keeps you smiling throughout your journey. BUD is an endearing protagonist, and his adventures feel both rewarding and lighthearted.

Overall, Grow Up is a fantastic follow-up that captures the essence of fun and exploration. Whether you’re a fan of the first game or new to the series, this is an experience that shouldn’t be missed. Highly recommended!

Grow Up takes everything I like from the previous game "Grow Home" and adds more good things to it. There is a lot more substance compared to the previous game while still keeping things fairly short.
