War of Rights is a multiplayer game set during the perilous days of the American Civil War, in the Maryland Campaign of September, 1862. Campfire Games is devoted to presenting the gruesome and glorious elements of the period, while maintaining the highest level of historical accuracy and realism as is possible with the wonders of CRYENGINE.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
- Massive battles: Take part in engagements consisting of 350 players.
- Tailored for line formation teamplay: Custom formation buff mechanic system rewards sticking together by lessening the suppression effects, the morale cost for the team when dying and the flag bearer respawn rate.
- Multiple army branches: Fall in on the line as an infantryman or shatter the fighting spirit of the enemy as an artillery crewman!
- Historical accuracy: Period correct uniforms, weapons, manual of arms animations, battlefields, objectives & drill camps.
- Regimental pride: 135 researched and recreated regiments & batteries all supporting uniforms for all ranks (Private to Colonel) and player classes.
⠀⠀
- Immersive communication: In-game 3D voice system.
- Recreated battlefields: More than 30 historically accurate skirmish areas of the Battles of Antietam and South Mountain as well as the Siege of Harpers Ferry to play on and three drill camps to perfect your formation forming abilities or simply exchange battle stories at the campfire.
- Player classes: Private, NCO, Flag Bearer, Drummer, Bugler, Fifer & Officer playable from every regiment & battery featured and covering all ranks from Private to Colonel.
- Community focus: A strong company (player organized clans) focus with a dedicated company tool and forum sections devoted to in-game event creation.
- Powerful game engine: Powered by CRYENGINE V, War of Rights is capable of providing visuals unmatched by any other Civil War game.
- More than a game: War of Rights is a vision that keeps expanding its scale. The project is entirely crowdfunded and has been developed on for the past 6 years. We consider it more of an ever evolving artistic piece rather than a final product with a targeted release deadline with set features.
Players in the game will be able to play on multiple battlefields of the campaign, from the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers where the Siege of Harper's Ferry took place, to the ridgelines of South Mountain, and to the meandering waters of Antietam Creek at the Battle of Antietam. Additionally, players will also be able to choose from a list of regiments that fought in each battle as well as what rank to fight as, whether they want to slog it out as a lowly private, or if you want to orchestrate the carnage and mayhem as a major general.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Uniforms and bodily features will all be customizable for other players to see as you march and fight in the lines of battle according to the tactics of the period. As a General, you will operate in your headquarters equipped with a map of the battlefield and constantly receiving reports of friendly and enemy positions. Send out new orders to the regiments to move forward, or fall back - all in real time. The orders will move down the chain of command, to the Colonels, Majors, down to the Captains in charge of the individual regiments, all of whom have the option to follow the orders of their trusted commander, or rebel against his wishes and fight as you see fit.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Each map contains a period reconstruction of the buildings, farms, forests, roads, and rocks as they were in 1862 so players can fight through the streets of Harper's Ferry, in the wooded heights of Fox's Gap at South Mountain, or in the cornfields and Bloody Lanes of Antietam. Players can feel the whiz of deadly shot and shell fly by their bodies, or hit their comrades or themselves as they scream in a bloody hail from their wounds. Limbs will fly and blood will be spilt once again as Campfire Games brings the fighting of the Civil War right to the player's computer screen!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Will you heed the Union call against the traitors? Or will you fight to defend your family and livelihood with the Confederacy? You decide!

It's a lot more fun and adrenaline pumping than you'd expect.
Damn good Civil War FPS Simulator!!!
just joined my first 2 games and its super slow, got little kids as an officer. love the idea thats why i got it but it takes 15 seconds to reload and movement is slow as heck.
It is a fun game. That's it , it is a game. As long as you approach it that way and don't take it so seriously , you can have fun with it.
Game is fun, small fanbase. kept alive by regiments[JOIN THE 5TH MINNESOTA!]. needs official matches hosted by campfire games.
Very cinematic. May take a little bit of time to learn controls but its worth it.
I have about 2 hours on here. So far, its fun. It's not a run around solo and slay girl slayyyy type of game. You have to work as a unit and follow orders. Its fun. BUT the cannons, i have not been able to use a cannon once. Devs please, please, help new players figure out how to select the soldier or whatever for the cannons. Seems like they are always, always gate kept. Let me have a chance to miss maaaaaan
That's it for me, what a waste of a purchase, this game has gone way downhill the past six months. Just got banned by server admins for no reason whatsoever. Honestly, if you like a community that absolutely craps on it's fans then this is the place for you. Literally most if not all of the admins will ban or kick you without conclusive evidence. Admins used to be held accountable, now they just do what they want and play map rotations they wanna play despite the whole server asking for a different rotation. Oh and don't forget if your mic is broken and you didn't type anything in chat you can still get banned :).
I've had this game for a year and the experiences are utterly incomparable to what it was before I quit playing. To the MODs/Admins fix yourselves, your game is dying because of you. You don't need to control every human being in the server let alone just ban random people. To the devs from a business standpoint I would highly advise you to keep the MODs/Admins in check. It's disgusting the amount of favoritism shown in this game. Admins will literally ignore racist comments from friends and ban others for doing it, which shouldn't be happening.
To finalize my thoughts on this game, the game play itself is not an issue, it's just the community. The community is drowning this game and running it into the ground. It's basically if you don't agree with how I feel or do what I say and I have power over you I'm gonna ban or TK you. It is unreal how bad this community is. There is so obviously an inner circle that's virtually a cancer eating a way at this community.
Update: I tried to appeal my ban and the admins with zero proof told me they didn't believe me and then began to make smart ass remarks towards me. How is this in anyway acceptable. They tried forcing me to tell them that I said it when I didn't. And when I told them no I'm not telling you I said that because guess what shit for brains I didn't say it. And then furthermore they began to make fun of officers in public matches.
Didn't do it mics broken, would've owned up to it had I done it. I wouldn't have made this big a deal about it had I done it. I was in a large company in a big crowd so very well coulda been someone else. Forcing someone to try and own up to something they didn't do is fucking vile, and I don't disagree with you agrippa. But, the fact of the matter is I got screwed by whoever banned me without any context or any reasoning as to why I was banned. And when I told you this you guys virtually told me my side of the story is shit and does not matter. and it's not a few hours either, 6 hours is a lot of time when you work almost everyday of the week. I do not care if you bash me publicly. People buying this shit need to know the fuckery they are getting themselves into. They need to know that they can just get banned without doing anything. I'm not the first to complain about this and obviously, because you guys suck as mods I won't be the last. I've told you a thousand fucking times that my mic is broken, and was just ignored.
I really wish I could recommend this game, it has so many great features and for the most part, a good community.
Unfortunately it is ruined by regiments, childish and toxic individuals who will do anything to ensure that they have the best outcome.
A number of admins are also biased/corrupt and will overlook certain instances of rule breaking based on regiment membership and personal opinions.
This game also has a downvote system which is completely flawed, it is easily and frequently abused by these exact regiments and trolls to ensure that people they have personal issues with cannot play.
The way the system works is that everyone on the team can downvote whoever they want for whatever reason, and accumulating a certain amount of said downvotes leads to you being unable to play any role besides rifleman, essentially blocking you from 2/3 of the gameplay experience. New players are easily mislead by people to mass downvote individuals.
If you enjoy the civil war and slow, tactical gameplay I would say give it a try, but dont get involved too much with the community and DO NOT join a regiment. I just cannot recommend it without first giving my opinion on the small but extremely detrimental parts of the community.
If the devs actually pay attention to this and work to fix these flaws (addition of upvote system/removal of downvote system/improving moderation) i would gladly change my review, but this is how it will remain for now.
Toxic community, frustrating and half baked game mechanics that players exploit to the detriment of new players, and HORRIBLE optimization. The thing that killed this game for me is the toxic, mob mentality of the players. I played this game for a year not saying much, but when i finally raised my opinions on the game, i get teamkilled for a whole match and cant even play the game (which is mostly looking at a spawn screen.) I didn't have a fun time after a couple hours. Just cant recommend the game when you might get bullied for not being drunk, racist, homophobic, ect... The playerbase turned on me so have fun with this dead ass, spawn, die, repeat piece of trash game.
I only have about 2 hours of playtime in War of Rights, but that was more than enough to experience the toxic community, unbearable lag, and overall disappointment that makes this game a complete waste of time. This is not the kind of game that requires hours of gameplay to understand or dive into a meaningful story. I don’t often leave reviews, but this game truly deserves to be called out. War of Rights is one of the most frustrating and disappointing experiences I’ve had in recent gaming history, and I genuinely regret spending both my time and money on it.
First off, the community is absolutely toxic. I’ve never encountered a game with such a high concentration of racist comments and offensive behavior. The player base is filled with vile individuals who don’t hesitate to make the experience unbearable with their hate speech and disgusting remarks. It’s enough to make you want to quit immediately.
But it gets worse. The so-called "experienced" players are incredibly entitled and rude. If you don’t play the game exactly how they want you to, they’ll verbally attack you, demand you follow their orders, or even kick you from the game. There’s no room for individual playstyles, and if you’re new, be prepared to get bullied by these "veterans."
The gameplay in War of Rights is painfully slow-paced and rooted in "realism"—which sounds great in theory but is tedious in practice. Reloading your weapon takes forever, mirroring the long, grueling process of the Civil War era, and running drains your stamina at an alarming rate, making it feel like you're trudging through mud. If you're not in "formation," you're penalized, which restricts your freedom and adds unnecessary pressure to an already frustrating experience. Defending yourself against stabs or close combat is nearly impossible, and the difficulty of distinguishing friend from foe in the chaotic battlefield only adds to the confusion. The objectives are poorly explained, often obscure, and frankly, boring, making it feel more like a slog than a meaningful battle.
Then there’s the technical side of things. No matter how powerful your PC or fast your internet speed is, War of Rights is an absolute lag-fest. I can barely play without constant stuttering and delay, even with top-tier specs and the best connection money can buy. It feels like the game was made for hardware from 2000, not something capable of handling modern titles.
To top it off, there is only ONE active PUG server, and it’s filled with trolls. These players think it’s hilarious to team-kill, ruin the game for everyone, and generally destroy any chance of having a fun experience. It’s the same toxic group of players over and over again, and the server is hardly ever populated with anyone else. The game is essentially dead, with no active community to support it.
In short, War of Rights is a mess—the gameplay, the community, and the technical performance are all subpar. Save yourself the frustration and skip this one entirely. There are far better games out there that don’t come with a racist community and toxic leadership demanding you worship them. I’m sure all the racist, toxic trolls will disagree.
Litteral garbage, forest map, cant see shit, muppet commander keeps screaming to charge, i slap someone, get insta banned after a single hit for "team damage" cuz i cant see anything.
I strongly recommend the game for enjoyers of historical warfare, or for people that want a game to goof off on.
Play the Union if you're a sweat and hate fun.
Play the Confederacy if you like to have fun (and occasionally say racial slurs).
Good game, good graphics, buggy but not to the extent that it is unplayable. In the couple hours I played, the toxicity and purposeful team killing was rampant. This was one of those games I have been wanting to buy for years but never pulled the trigger on and I am sad to be let down. Go spend your money on Holdfast: Nations at War if you want a community that is fun, lighthearted, and full of good vibes. You will not find that here.
Defended a cornfield with 100 other people. After an extended firefight, and many casualties, the Union decided to charge our lines. Our CO called to fix bayonets, and sounded a counter charge. I then found myself in a brutal melee with 180+ people screaming nonsense in poor renditions of various forced accents, until a cannonball vaporized me and the 20 other people around me.
10/10
Realistic. Slow ...very slow shothing game so aim good before you shoot. The interaction with the other player and a good comander make that game enjoyable. Alot of racist slur so ...ouff. you have been ware.
Discharged my rifle into my officers back for trying to make me form a line.
Im not forming a line.
11/10.
first hour into the game our officer led our reg into battle. Our officer coordinated a flank on a reg of rebels lets just say them ol' rebels never stood a chance.
Joined a game choose union side. first skirmish i was beaten to death while being called a N****R lover by 20 charging confederates. 10/10
The most immersive and fun game I've played in a while!! (If you have a good CO) :D
"TAKE AIM, FIRE!" That's all you need to know that this game is fun. (Note: For people playing in SEA, this game even with high ping is playable and not noticeable at all.)
the reason i give it a thumbs down is the optimization and clunky movement IS BAD BUT I LOVE IT and i believe you will love it especially if you're a history nerd like me i find it funny that people call this games community toxic or racist most of the time they're just being stupid role players messing around it's a literal civil war american game about a war that was about slavery what do you expect not only that most of the time they're making fun of the racial times not embracing it and if they are it's fun to make fun of them when they are actual racist.
Immersive, organised period combat with high element of realism. Visually a very good environment. Very well optimized.
High ping is not an issue - for Aussie players wondering if it will play well. I played almost 7 hours solid in my first session on US servers with over 200 players and had zero lag problems. Even with melee, I didn't feel like I was at any disadvantage.
Gameplay is pretty awesome. The level of organisation and tactical co-operation is beyond anything I've found in almost any other multiplayer combat game. It's designed to greatly favour co-operation and adherence to line warfare formations, and officer commands.
My complaints are that it can be pretty clunky. They really need to work on the movement a lot more. You get used to it, but it can get you killed very easily if you're not planning around the clunky bullsht. And dying because of clunky controls is super annoying. Combat games are best when they feel good, smooth, reactive. This is too slow in so many ways, and gets you caught up in transition animations.
Overall, I like it a lot and will definitely put a lot of hours into it. Can't wait until cavalry is implemented. That will raise the authenticity level a lot. And it's already very high in that area.
Its a unique game because it requires coordination, and interteam voicechat. If you like talking to others, and not being a bad faith racist troll, this is your game
Joined a lobby, spent three business days loading my rifle, immediately died. Heard someone yell " die yankee scumbags" while blasting Scottish music. 10/10 very immersive, would spend all day playing this.
So I was enjoying the game however, your own team walking in front of you as you take a shot and dying resulting in a ban is absurd...... How the hell do you get banned for others walking in the line of fire. Would not suggest wasting your hard earned money on a game you can play due to others ignorance.
Fun game. Like Holdfast but more with slightly more realism.
Fun social experience. I've never seen another game that more accurately depicts what chaos battle actually is. If you are ok with following orders from a 16 year old taking his role as an officer far too seriously, it can be a fun time.
fun game and people are cool just dont tk them to much
About 100 hours into this game:
One of the best games I've ever played. There's not a lot of downtime, very fun to listen to officers orders and see the entire company follow orders and really feel the battle unfold. Awesome game, don't even hesitate in buying it
The real time action, and having to cooperate with a proximity chat is simply amazing. I love the attention to detail this game has, with historic uniforms, muskets, battlefields, tactics, and so many small details I can't list. I wish there where more FPS games based on this era of human history, even if the battle tactics seem silly to our modern ways of warfare. I'd definitely recommend giving this a try.
Awesome game, just usually dead servers and little daunting controls for a newbie.
The game is it's own kinda of game nothing out there close too this but total war empires or napoleo. i highly recommend a unit or brigade yes it does have there political like chain of command sometime drama since i bough it back in aug of 2024. cons of the game i review this game 12/15/24 with 165 hours thats nothing tours these man an woman that plays this 1k+ hours anyways ways back too the cons of the game doesn't have horse be in development hell for years what i be told PUBLIC MATCHES CAN BE VERY UNFORGIVING conversations that you will hear on the line.... other then that i give this game a 7 out of 10 with the horses that you never see an what people say in pubs
yes play now so fun if don't have the money for this get money at all cost's
Didn't know if I was Sir or Fuck or Sir, Fuck. Only one map had some population 146/350 Friday night. Seems to be major role play where they expect you you know what going on and where to go upon opening. Not very inviting for growth. Could be fun but if you have a less toxic introduction. But if you are hardcore RP. I imagine its your cup of tea.
This game is very accurate when it comes to how the Civil war battles played out. The way the community works together to win games is nothing like I seen before in a game.
The only way to get the most out of the game is to join one of the many regiments and play in the large servers. Problem is those same groups ruin the fun of the game between requiring you to play matches and attend in game meetings to the point of requiring you of telling them when you'll miss one. Not to mention the attitude of "you play it the way we say or you're wrong." There's no faster way to kill a game than make it feel like work between having to schedule time off and being yelled at by someone else because you picked the wrong rifle for the date the battle is set.
Well public matches are just random crazy fighting. Some public commanders manage to get people in line. But with a bunch of people running around dropping the N-bomb on CSA side. The public matches make this game okay. Now the private matches make this game very cool. When you have filed firing lines with hundreds of people on the map. This shit is damn fun. Public matches get very boring. Private matches with legit people who want to play the game how its meant to be played. I don't see myself getting bored any time soon.
Realistic fps similar to Hell Let Loose. So know going in it is not Call of Duty or any other run and gun game. Staying in formation and working with your unit is what is important in this game and the experience progression shows it.
The game was on sale when I purchased it.
It gave me actual psychological damage for free.
I just suffered a laughing fit trying to describe my experiences to a friend.
Would recommend!
Most realistic musket era simulator on steam. Play it for the immersion not the kills cuz you wont know if you killed anyone due to... realism.
Great idea and completely sh*tty implementation.
The only Civil War shooter on the game market, without a single competitor, and so f*cked up!
The character in the game is so slow to perform everything, as if stoned on heroin.
It's just impossible to fight - while the junkie is slowing down, he's already been shot and stabbed several times.
With all my love for the setting and anticipation of the pleasure of the game, it completely ruins the desire to play.
It's with great regret that I am deleting and returning the game.
The game encourages teamwork and line battles. Would recommend for anyone who wants a "not-so-casual but not-so-serious" milsim environment.
The only competitive first person shooter with 0 cheating problems.
I Love history , and i love fps this game is great its authentic ( even tho a kill feed would be nice) people are really coordinated and hilarious during rounds and its a lot less racist then people talk about ( when your not on csa)
The game has awesome graphics and I really like how it like. Put you in like battles and how you get to like co-op week with your teammates but I just like the game it's so fun thank you for making this game and it's warranty on special wargames I tried.
More civil war line formation PTSD. 10/10 if the community wasn't cringe AF with their edgy racism and trolling
- Load into first game
- Spawn in the middle of a bayonet charge
- I join in
- Buck and ball deletes my lower abdomen
- Testosterone-fueled middle aged man runs over my dead body screaming "YOU WILL NOT FUCK YOUR SISTER ANY LONGER"
- Our entire team gets cut down by cannon and volley fire, smoke all over the battlefield
11/10
In 2020 I saw a video of this game on YouTube and i was like wow this seems good and has a good community but as i got into the game and played my first match the first few words I heard was ''N WORD loving boy let me show you how the south do it down here N WORD''
I found this game on youtube, I saw zombie mode and I was like (I want it)
Bought it, was hyped.
Started looking for the servers with zombies.
Came out as event and its not anymore in game.
Thinking about a refound.
Why?
