This is a brutal survival game that is hard to walk away from no matter how many times I die.
One of the best and most fun crafting/survival games I’ve seen. Can’t wait to see what else ColdGames has in store with this game. I must admit the first time I tried to play I didn’t get it but once figured it out it’s been a blast. I think maybe in the future if ColdGames would put in a small tutorial that would definitely help players in the long run at the start.

While I understand many of the complaints/frustrations such as getting 1 steak off a killed bear, I am reminded the game's name is Subsistence rather than Abundance. We are meant to work for our progress. Overall, I find this game rather enjoyable. I find the graphics good and have never encountered a bug even in co-op, which is extremely commendable coming from a solo dev!
Playing on High settings means you cannot see fiber, I ran around for a clear hour looking for it and yes I know what it looks like. Change the way it spawns or where you harvest it from and I'd play again. Otherwise just a pointless running round a map game.
Somewhat old survival game. Not too realistic. Large content updates roughly once a year. Single developer. Looks nice, but not super modern. Single player, multiplayer, servers are almost empty.
But somehow I still play it.
So many things and options. If you like grinding, this game could be for you. Its a pretty chill game if your looking for that. It can also be a challenge for sure if you set the the skill higher and turn on hunters. This is everything i wanted in a chill survival game.

I love this game. Its survival and building. Its a really tough game tho. It kicks you when your down, but once you get the hang of it....No still kicks your butt.
I really like the concept of the game, but it is just way too much of a grind. I would enjoy it a lot more if it was even slightly easier to get resources. You're just constantly fighting against your depleting hunger bar while also trying to find loot boxes around the map while also trying to find chickens to be able to make more arrows while also not staying too far from the base so you can get back in time to keep your fire lit.
It's just extremely grindy. I love the game when you're fighting against the AI and raiding their bases or protecting yours, but it takes HOURS to get enough stuff built up in your base to be able to attack even the lowest leveled AI bases.
If you like a grind and want a difficult survival experience, I would definitely recommend this game for you. But, if you work a full time job and only have a small amount of time to play something, I would choose something other than Subsistence.
just no, insane grinding game and no goal to play to. it's early access but can be seen as done because of rare updates and these rare updates could be made in a week, guess thats his work time in a year on that game.
The most unforgiving and hardest survival game you will find! We have enjoyed this game for many years now. Seeing all the wonderful updates, fantastic gameplay, amazing building and we love this game. Seems sort of basic? Not on your life. The animals will hunt you down, perform fatalities on you. Weather is very unforgiving. Building is both rewarding and extensive! You set down in the middle of nowhere. You have to fight for everything you get. The hunters will spawn after you set up your bases. They will hunt you, create their own bases, forage for what they need and if you allow the settings, they will raid your base. You ever want to play a PVP game without PVP. This is the #1 game for that. You are missing out if you have never tried this game and you love survival games. Dev is a master!
such a noob...i've been killed about a million times but still can't wipe the smile off my face, it has taken me 3 years to finally stop watching other people play it and buy a computer of my own...fantastic game, will keep this old aussie bloke amused for a very long time....10 out of 10 Cold Games
What a great game. At first it feels that the game is a grinder but if you are patience, you will enjoy your achievements and because of this, you can enjoy the game for a long period of time. There are still updates which brings you back to the game. There are a lot to do under water, in forest and in mountains. Seasons will force you to change bag content and strategies.
It's a hard game for sure and the graphics aren't the best but not the worst and I also do think we need a way to craft nails, with that being said for a solo dev it's impressive and once you get started it can be hard to walk away IMO. I don't know about mp but this is a recommended former at least.

My go to game when I just want to be happy. Yea, it's hard in the beginning, but then it's just enjoyable.
This game needs more things but in this state is pretty good

YOU DIE FOR ANYTHING, STARVATION MOSTLY, ANIMALS ATTACKS NOT ENOUGH BULLETTS TO KILL EVEN A WOLVE.
EVERYTIME YOU DIE YOU LOSE ALL YOUR WEAPONS YOU HAVE TO START OVER, WHICH IS CRAP.

I would avoid this game. It doesn't seem to work properly. Co Op is janky, one day it will work, the next day it won't. NPC's are literally 1990's levels of hilarious. Looks like the devs haven't updated their sub in 8 years. Not even sure why I bought this.
this game overall is a good game but is very hardcore survival between the electric and mass and the lack of ammo to keep you alive. if you dont have enough mass or electric your not able to make the things you need to make survival that little bit more do able. chopping trees you only get 3x wood so your chopping soooo many to get enough for just one wooden base board for your base all the vibers and so on you may even play on easy makes more animals appear thats going to get you at every corner you turn the hunters off to stop them coming to your babse every 3 mins again brings more animals so really isnt that much easier you try gather for ammo you may get more ammo for a pisto that wont do all that much to hunters to take them down we ended up going in after one was killed with a axe to kill in order to take the goods out the base, all in all iv had 34 hours game play on this game yes we enjoyed it but that wasnt from the lack amount of dying then and starting the game all over again to try make it that little easier on ourselfs well i can say it wasnt even making ammo isnt cheap all in all the game is cheap to buy yes but the things in the game isnt cheap and you spend more time trying to gather and get things and actually dying rather than enjoying the game it became unenjoyable for us in the end due to everything being as expensive as it is. even crafting a bed if you didnt have electric to pay for (spawns) you got respawned over 1500m away from your bag and in the cold winter it killed you 6x before even making it to your bag, i think it would be such an enjoyabloe game giving things would be cheaper to craft and or less thats gonna kill you 6x over as all you do is spend your game play dying and or not having enough materials to craft to keep you alive that little bit longer. if you love hardcore survival games then go for it other whys honestly its not for you personally
One of the most ridiculously unbalanced and annoying games you'll ever play.
BEEN LOOKING FOR A GAME THATS JUST SURVIVAL IN THE WILDERNESS FOREVER BT THEY ALWAYS HAVE ZOMBIES, DINOS, ETC ETC..... THIS IS THE GAME IVE BEEN LOOKING FOR, ITS REALLY HARD, AND ITS JUST YOU AGAINST NATURE! YOU CAN TURN THE HUNTERS ON OR OFF, SO OFF IS JUST YOU ALONE IN THE WOODS.
If they could get rid of the constant crashing, then yeah, its great. Pain in the ass to constantly be thinking about saving so you loose minimal progress, and to have to reload the game over and over. Seen lost of posts in forums about this. verifying game integrity is a no-brainer and seems to never identify any issues for this game. unfortunate.
Otherwise, its a great offline survival game that doesnt require zombies or the apocalypse. Just survive in the wild...with random spawning supplies bags and downed aircraft to help you along the way. If you walk everywhere, you dont use up your energy and food stats too quick but you wont be able to cover a lot of ground if you're trying to get a couple sectors away. Nothing like taking down a grizzly with arrows to conserve ammo.
I would love to see a survival game where the survivalist does not have expert carpentry skills right off the bat. If it were me for real in this setting, i would probably dig a trench and use felled trees to make a teepee or live in a hole in the ground or something.
Nope...Mechanics of the game are subpar even for an Alpha project to even the most basic survival games out there in similar stages of development. Very archaic to least the least. Not well thought out punishments and lacks intuitive aspects of this outdated system of survival. Good luck though Devs.

We have so many games that are wrongly placed in the survival genre, but have nothing to do with survival and are ultimately always about PVP. In most games, you have everything you need within a few hours and it's not difficult to get there. With Substistence, you finally have a challenge, even on the easiest difficulty level. The winters are brutal and we love it! It takes a few hours to even understand the game and find out what is important to be able to survive at all. This game doesn't deserve negative criticism in 2024. There is still so much potential to be exploited and we are looking forward to everything that is still to come. Anyone who cries here that it is too difficult is only used to "survival games" in which you actually get most things "for free", don't have to fight for your survival and every game mechanic is the same as 100 other games. But it should be a matter of life and death, with every step and every action. And Subsistance fulfills that 1000 percent. So for those who want to play a child's birthday party, you've come to the wrong place. But for anyone who is really looking for a survival challenge that lasts more than just a few hours, buy the game! You won't regret it. 1000 percent recommendation!

Just a warning - this game isn't remotely fair. Can be quite aggravating at times. But still gets very addicting.
Its y far one if not the best hardcore surviver games i have ever played.
I simply cannot get past the start of the game. Making a single floor took me an entire in-game day trying to hunt down the 55 fibers, 15 wooden logs, and nails... You can't even make nails at this point, but they are required to make shelter from the dozens of predators that are just everywhere.
The game is clunky, slow, badly balanced and just generally not interesting enough to keep my interest for the 30 real-life minutes it takes to gather materials to make a single floor. Add in the fact I need 4 times more to put up walls, and possibly a roof? At this point I realize I'm bored and quit, again for the 3rd time.
The game has so many bears and wolves its unplayable. the start of the game takes so much time to collect fibers and unless you have hours a day to play dont bother getting them game. Nearly every game ive played and downloaded has positive reviews but this is BS and if i could get my money back i would absolutely get a refund!
This one's a toughie. I really want to like this game, but there's just too much wrong with it. Easy mode is littered with animals ready to tear you apart, so I question whether it's easy at all. Normal and Hard are a real pain to learn the game in, particularly since there's no tutorial or introduction. You're just thrown in the deep end, and spend a lot of early game time trying to figure things out.
If you're trying to play this multi-player, be ready for serious hassles. There are absolutely no admin tools, which makes running even a friendly server a real pain in the neck.
The devs have been releasing the odd feature here and there, but to me it feels pretty abandoned.
Personally, I just wanted a chill hunt/gather/explore experience where I could wander around without constantly starving to death or getting eaten by bears.
I give it a disappointing 5/10. Admin tools would have bumped this to a 6 or 7.
A hard core survival game, with some game mechanics that some people will love and other people will hate. Not for everyone. For hard core survival lovers, this is a great game !
The vibe and the atmosphere of the seasons is really great, the tension of the hunters pressure is really well done. The grind can be feeling tough, but this is part of the feeling of accomplishment of the game, and the resource management !
Brutal hard game but good fun if you can stick it
This could be one of the finest survival games out there if the developers listen and make some minor adjustments. I've only played this for a few hours and thoroughly enjoying it but it certainly needs tweeking. Been watching videos and some suggestion have not been implemented so guessing the developers are no longer updating it. I love the fact there are no admin tools which stops temptation but a few updates would be great.

There are so many challenges and funny things happen to. For example ; Caught afish / rabbit, but a cheeky eagle grabs the prey in front of my nose.
The vindows and the folging stair are super cool.
The developers can be proud of there work.
But don`t worry dear negative reviewers, there is still a board game called LUDO, which probably suits you better.

Great Game! Best Survival Game With Focus On Realism (No Magic, Space, Zombies) YAY!
Yeah, it's grindy. But it's home. I love the atmosphere of this game.
I really don't understand the idea of this, whats come into minds when people wanted to fish in a game? THEY WANT TO RELAX esspecially with survival games, get away from the grind a bit! BUT NOOO, in this game you have to craft a new fishing line everytime you caught a fish.., Or didn't,! And the firestarter only works once..? So here we go again, go find stuff and craft the same tedious stuff that does't need to. Dude, it's not realistic, OR SUBSISTENCE it's anoyin...!!!! Change this and i'll give it a thumbs up. Now you all said, why don't craft 50 fishing lines in the beginning before I go fishing? WELL, do you even have any idea how much of stupid mats you need? Thinking of that already ruin the fishing expirences before you about to fish!! BAD, stupid, abslutely NO LOGIC game design here! WHY?
Inconsistently fun would be the best way to describe this game. Has a'lot of good things goin for it but damn does it have a bunch of annoying ass mechanics, like locking your progression behind how lucky you are with crates or the god awful infection mechanic, cause if you get infected in the beginning you're just fucked and gotta restart. Had some fun with the game nonetheless but guess ill wait another decade or two for it to finally get out of alpha before i pick it back up.
Early game is prohibitively difficult and punitive. There are too many predators, a single animal bite kills, a single night kills (cold). The game mechanics aren't explained and each death moves you further and further from your death location. Just skip this one, games are supposed to be fun.
Insane Grind simulator. It takes hours for progression, way too many animals agroing. Raid AI are broken. Could be fun but is unnecessarily hardcore to grind mats and is just a time sink that looses its luster after about 2 hours.
This is an incredible game. Hours and hours of gameplay. This isn't a triple A game that can be completed in 16 hours. This is hundreds of hours of gameplay. But be warned... It's not for the faint hearted. Even on easy, it is hard, and challenging. But ultimately addictive and rewarding. And after all, wolves and bears make a nice change to zombies, don't they :) It is survival, it is base building. it is gorgeous graphically and you won't be able to help yourself from diving back in, However frustrating it is. And it isn't perfect. I wouldn't call it necessarily very well balanced. And it can be... a grind. A real grind. And frustrating. But if you like challenging games, where progress is measured in deaths and experienced learnt, much like life, you will love it.
This one is rough. I can't recommend as of now. Also, way too much grind for so little payout.
cost of building is to high, more scrape needs to be added, should be able to craft plant fiber clothing
