Краткое описание:
The Fall of the Dungeon Guardians - Dungeon Crawler RPG с видом от первого лица, вдохновением для которой послужила классика в лице Dungeon Master™ и Might & Magic®.
- Отряд из четырёх персонажей;
- Дискретное перемещение: ваш отряд движется по квадратам по двум осям;
- Вид от первого лица;
- 4 класса, 12 специализаций;

Whether you enjoy Fall of the Dungeon Guardians is going to come down to how much you like the games combat system. The best thing you can do is watch a video of the combat in action because theres alot of it and this dungeons a beast at a whopping 20 levels, so if you don't like it, it will drag and badly. Lucky for you theres quite a few options to play with to get it into the sweet spot that suits you.
But lets talk about the basics first before we get into tweaking these things. You'll be playing a very specific party setup, I went with the default party, character creation is basically non-existent, you'll answer a few questions and get assigned a filler party for whatever roles you didn't pick. Go with it, the game requires specific party roles and if you dont bring a healer or a tank or whatever you've failed before the game even starts; the fact that theres no character creation also means you can't see your skills or stats until after you've started, you get a free respec at the start (and every few levels) because you can't even choose your subclass to start. So stick to a basic party, you'll get quite a few repecs so it you will have a chance to experiment (I saved my game and reloaded after trying out a few builds so even then you;ll be safe from losing all your respec points).
Now the combat itself is real time with pause, you'll cycle through your skills, managing agrro on your front row while casters and healers in the back do their thing, at first you wont have enough skills to cycle but you obviously get more as you level. But heres the problem alot of these skill dont feel impactful, now I don't mean that they don't do anything, you need to use them in the right place to win a fight, what I mean is theres not alot of strategy going into most fights, once you have your basic rotation up and running that'll do for all your basic combat encounters which are the majority of encounters. Thats a problem as for most encounters theres nothing to really differentiate an encounter with a goblin from a wyvern or a barbarian. I had an interrupt on my fighter but only boss fights take advantage of this mechanic, enemies have mana but their casters can't for example be mana drained or silenced, a warriors skill might hit one target or use one that hits two targets, you use the same cycle of buffs at the start of each combat the only time you really need to change things up is if a boss resists the only damage type your character does and then you just repec until you need to change damage again. For the majority of the game its just going through the same cycle of abilities each combat again and again.
And theres alot of combat, the game has an option thats on by default that halves the amount of monsters in the game and I get why, because it drags hard. On the highest difficulty the combat requires you to constantly pause and the game gets tedious fast. Thankfully bosses mix things up abit and its a shame there isn't more combat on that level. Lucky for us the saving grace here is that you can change the difficulty at anytime and the custom difficulty sliders saved this for me. I did need time to experiment and hit that sweet spot and your mileage may vary, but I was able to lower the monster damage so I didn't need to pause the game and it took abit longer but I was able to get the monster HP down enough to stop fights from dragging out forever while still being high enough to need to use all my abilites in a fight and on top of that you can adjust Elite and boss monsters separately to keep those guys tougher so they still feel special.
And thats important because because the combat is the main draw here, there are other things here to recommend this game, the dungeon itself (after the starting levels) looks good, it has multiple elevation levels and some complex layouts that make exploring fun. Less fun (or more depending on your tastes) is that puzzles are isolated to side areas on each floor, rather than breaking up combat like in other crawlers. It isn't helped that itemisation is randomised and restricted to just stat increases as quite often after taking time to solve a puzzle you get an item thats a downgrade, even if its not minor upgrades just aren't very satisfying to find and this hurts exploration (the first legendary rank item I found was a direct downgrade, the second a very minor buff replaced one level later by a random drop), and you'll have to scour each level looking for healing items and potions that you will need (unless you turn difficulty right down, but don't do that without combat theres just too much empty space) but at least the game makes you use them (I'm a hoarder and would usually end the game full up on potions, not here). There is an extended puzzle quest covering the whole game but it if you ever miss a clue you'll need to backtrack to find it, if you can be bothered.
This thing is a mixed bag check out the combat first before playing but understand that you'll be engaging with that core system if it looks like it takes way to long, you can fix that, if you don't want to pause you can fix that, if you WANT a grind you can fix that, hell you can set it so everything is a one shot if you really want, and being flexible like that is a good reason to check this one out if you already like the genre.
Excellent, 9/10
Nice dungeon crawler.
First of all, thank you ManuTOO for all your hard work and making this great game.
It has a superb and challenging gameplay. For a complete description, check my post on the discussions: https://steamcommunity.com/app/409450/discussions/0/612032374411104281/
What a fantastic take on classic dungeon crawler games. Combats involve a bit more tactical thinking with various powers available to you. They also are way less button mashing, because the attacks all auto fire once you select the target. Graphics and UI are quite good for an older indie game too. Very playable! And best of all, the developer gives you lots of options to tweak the game difficulty/helpers to how you want to play. Unlike some other *** devs who have their 'vision' and force it on everyone, this dev is awesome b/c while they suggest a way to play, the give you the ability to play how you want. The biggest example is having an auto map function from the beginning of each level or if you have find a map to unlock it first (default). Excellent game.
Was looking for something along the lines of Dungeon Master and Eye of the Beholder.
Dungeon Guardians really hits the spot!
Nice modern looks that are kind to my potato.
Huge dungeon, good variety of creatures, 5 races, 4 classes, skill trees.
Plenty of options that allow you tweak the gameplay.
Map editor, for immortality!
Re the map editor. I know the game is finished, but I would pay money for the ability to add custom textures and creatures.... A cheeky late DLC, maybe?
I have around 10 other dungeon crawler games and this stands out head and shoulders above the rest.
Some players think this sort of game is a copy of something else but think about it ..... a trap door is a trap door is a trap door regardless of what a game is called
A "modern" dungeon crawler, so if you like old school games like eye of the beholder or wizardy, or newer crawlers like legend of g 1 and 2, and heroes of monkey tavern, or - just like to make your own grid based pen and papers maps as you go: This is for you!
I don't like the real time, fast based combat. Tile based games like this are normally turn based and tactical, carefully choosing between a wide range of attacks and abilities. It just doesn't fit well.
I love old school revivals, but this is somewhat misguided.
The encounters are designed around a very specific party setup to an extent that if you don't have that setup, you have no chance against bosses.
This leaves little freedom of choice and for me that's a no-go in this kind of game.
I would have refunded this but unfortunately you'll find out too late how linear it is.
The Fall of the Dungeon Guardians - Enhanced Edition offers some intriguing ideas but struggles to deliver a satisfying gameplay experience. While the premise of dungeon-crawling with tactical combat sounds promising, several flaws in execution make it hard to recommend.
Combat System: Repetitive and Rigid
Combat revolves around using abilities in a strict order to maximize efficiency, leading to encounters that feel monotonous. The distinction between group and single-target optimization further reinforces this rigidity, as there’s little incentive to experiment or adapt. Movement mechanics, intended to dodge attacks and minimize enemy engagement, are underwhelming since most attacks cannot be avoided by positioning. The option to interrupt enemy abilities adds some depth, but the long cooldowns on interrupt skills make it a sporadic and passive aspect rather than a core mechanic. Ultimately, combat boils down to queuing abilities and reading enemy attack meters, leaving little room for dynamic or engaging gameplay.
Progression: Minimal and Underwhelming
Loot drops and the skill tree system fail to provide meaningful progression. Gear upgrades, often in small increments like a +4 strength bonus, feel too minor to celebrate. Similarly, the skill tree’s incremental bonuses (e.g., a 5% boost to an ability or 2% stat increase) lack impact, making level-ups feel unimportant. The occasional active skill offers some excitement, but leveling is so slow that customizing the party feels limited. Adding to the frustration, loot often doesn’t suit the party, and managing inventory for four characters becomes a tedious chore.
Gameplay Flow: Frequently Interrupted
The pacing suffers due to constant inventory micromanagement and the necessity of distributing minor gear upgrades. Dialogue interruptions, while occasionally humorous or informative, halt the game entirely, requiring the player to click through rather than allowing the narrative to unfold naturally. While some players may appreciate the opportunity to read and absorb the story, these pauses detract from the overall momentum.
Quality of Life and Developer Support
The game includes several thoughtful quality-of-life features, such as auto-mapping and item highlights, which help mitigate frustrations with navigation and loot collection. Additionally, the developer's active engagement with the community and willingness to assist players reflect genuine passion and dedication to the project.
Final Thoughts
Despite its solid foundation and some commendable quality-of-life options, The Fall of the Dungeon Guardians - Enhanced Edition ultimately falls short due to its repetitive combat, underwhelming progression, and momentum-breaking interruptions. While the developer’s commitment is admirable, the game itself fails to provide a compelling or satisfying experience. Unless the gameplay loop resonates with you, it’s difficult to recommend.
Pretty solid
I think i like this one even more than Legend of Grimrock now, while in Grimrock you needed to do pretty much everything manually, this one give you an option auto attack enemies and put skills in a queue.
The game also have 4 classes with 3 different specializations with a skill tree for each, so the gameplay goes pretty deep, and i really like the plot, you control a group of prison guards that need to venture in a dungeon full of monsters to hunt down the escaped criminals, who are all deadly killers. I'm playing on the Hell difficulty and i'm feeling like a cockroach the whole time, it's great.
If you liked Legend of Grimrock, there's a good chance you'll like this one as well, i recommend you give it a try
This game tries to be too hardcore for your own good. Do not approach without an external walkthrough (which, for me, was always a sign of bad game design), loot is mostly useless, combat is unbalanced even on lower difficulty levels. I resigned, after a cave troll killed me 5 times in a row on level 10 (also known as the running level, as there's a ridiculous amount of pointless running back and forth).
Buy only if it costs 3-5$, or if you like your game to punish and frustrate you instead of being fun.
i cant recommend this one. its a large 20 level dungeon but it is so boring and the ending was terrible in my opinion
I liked everything about this game. I was enjoying it immensely until the bug(s?). At a certain part, about 6 hours in for me, the game breaks and I can't progress anymore. Game over. 0/10 for games that can't be completed.
The exploration, character progression, equipment to be found etc, game graphics and audio are all very good and it has an excellent mapping system - once you find the Level map. This is a well made game with few software bugs.
However, it has a strange kind of hybrid game system - it not real time combat nor is it true turn based combat, but something 'in between' ! I found it difficult to get a good grasp of all the intricacies of its fairly complex combat system and could not progress passed dungeon level 4, no matter what strategies I tried. The level boss just kept killing my party. I gave up after about 10 attempts to beat this boss. Maybe I was doing something wrong ?
If you can make some 'head way' with the combat system and the strategies you need to use to beat some of the harder monsters you might find the game OK.
If Steam had a 'neutral' game recommendation category I would have put it into this category as there is probably a decent game here, but it is not for me.
