Not a fan of Wizardy 1-7... Got to be honest! But Wizardy 8 really plays like the parent of one of my favorite RPG's of all time- Might and Magic VI-VIII- despite it coming out after
If you're not a fan of the Wizardry serious but loved Might and Magics (specifically VI-VIII) you really should give this a try... just pretend like it is older! Hahaha!
Really sad that both this series and Might and Magic fizzled out, they produced some of my (to this day) favorite games.
A fun, First Person, Party Based RPG that is not Gridlike, not unlike Might And Magic 8 With The Merge Mod, but Currently Better. Well Worth the time to play while waiting for more like it to come out...
cant get it to work. What am I doing wrong
love the wizardry game very fun very hard
I tried more than once to enjoy this game. I can even get past the fact it is one of the ugliest games I've ever seen, especially the laughably bad character portraits. But I can't just ignore how awful, clunky and unintuitive the gameplay is. If your game requires an online tutorial for you to figure out how to cast a level.1 spell then you failed as a game designer. Don't bother with this, play an actually good dungeon crawler.
I like retro, but this game is janky as hell. I simply don't have the patience to sit and dot com all the instructions how to play. My God, I couldn't figure out how to cast a healing spell or even move forward in combat. So, some noxious slime just shot me to death... Graphics suck. Unless you have a huge boner for old ass annoying games, you missed the time to play this one by like 30 years. If they remade it, I would buy it again.
I think the main problem with this game is that it was at a time where grid based crawlers were transitioning to 3D. Back then it may have been pretty cool, but now it is pure hot steamy poop.
Movement is horrendous and was made back when I was a noob and used arrow keys instead of wasd... Yep and you can't change them.
.
Great game to fall back to, to slow things down from the fast pace of fps and mmo. Also nice that i can walk away and do other things due to the turn based play. Played 6 and 7 way back in the day.
Graphics are so 90's, but it's still a fun game
Can't beat the Wizardry games, part of how it all started.
Greatest Dungeon Crawler EVER! Timeless.
Great role-playing game!
9/10
+ Great sequel.
+ Good music and sound effects.
+ Great voice acting.
+ Good storyline.
+ Multiple endings.
+ Great gameplay.
+ High replayability.
+ Great turn-based combat.
+ Interesting quests and puzzles.
+ Lots of races, character classes and enemies.
+ Lots of magic spells, weapons and armor.
- Outdated 3D graphics.
- Enemies spawn too frequently.
Immortal classic!
You have a thing for old school games, are not put off by outdated graphics and would like to try your hands on a game from the Wizardry series, one of the most influential RPG series from the early days of gaming?
This may be right down your alley. Compared to other, currently available titles such as Five Ordeals or Proving Ground, this one is less repetitive... you don't go into a certain dungeon over and over in order to drag your loot (or corpses) back to town, level up, by better gear and repeat that cycle.
Instead, your group of adventures gets stranded close to a monastery, which you explore and hopefully survive. After that, the world opens up a bit more as you step outside and travel to a town etc.
What this game DOES have is difficulty, one thing the Wizardry games are known for. You will probably die a couple of times, especially early on, while learning the mechanics. If you're new to the series and need a headstart, maybe consider looking up a few pointers on a good, well balanced group. Also keep in mind your positioning... it's a mechanic that's a bit elaborate here. It's not only about "character is in the back row and can't reach enemies to attack"... you have way more options for positioning.
What's nice is that there is a continuous mode, kinda like an automated mode where your characters attack with the most suitable weapon (ranged or melee). They will not cast spells or use items, so while this may work for simple fights with weaker enemies, you want to also issue commands yourself. Example: If I face a group of enemies, I have my bard use a lute to put the group to sleep so I can focus on one enemy and not get hit by all of them. Problem here: If the enemy that is NOT asleep is out of reach for some of your party members, they MAY attack a sleeping enemy, thereby waking it up. So even though, especially early on, a lot of the fights can actually be won by letting the chars attack by themselves, you should pay attention and trigger spells, useable items (flasks, musical instruments) yourself to win... and survive.
There is some of that weirdness that Wizardry games are known for too... you will traverse this medieval style fantasy world and run into personal computers, electrical elevators etc. It's not as pronounced as in, say, Wizardry 6 or 7, but if things like that kill your immersion, if you want your medieval fantasy to be "true and clean" with no modern/SciFi-elements, just be aware of this. Some of the voice emotes of your party members also are on the silly side... which kinda fits, as of course, back in the day, many RPGs had such silliness mixed in. Think of games from the Ultima series as an example.
Anyway... unless older games, outdated graphics, a lack of modern QOL features etc. put you off, you're in for quite an adventure here. I started gaming on a C64 with games such as Ultima 5 and 6, and have always loved classic RPGs, so this game eventually got its hooks into me... I am enjoying it a lot. Once again, it is difficult and you may die quite a bit, so make sure to safe often.
Some advice before I wrap this up: A bard can be quite helpful, eg. to put enemies asleep. In the first town you get into, you will find vendors to buy and sell from. You don't HAVE to necessarily fight every enemy. After the monastery, you will run into a group of very tough enemies with tons of HP... these I died to several times until I managed to get around them. Save often. Maybe do the old school thing and draw a simple map. It's not as much required as it is with many of the other Wizardry games, but it will keep you from getting lost.
My verdict: A great RPG. Nope, it may not be as trailblazing as, say, Ultima 7, some of the early Elder Scroll or DND games, but it's fun, challenging, quite surprising and definitely worth a try. 7.5/10.
Honestly one of the best games/rpg's ever made. I remember loving it at release, but I don't think i appreciated it as much back then because I just thought games were getting better & better, that they would keep on improving. I had no idea that this was the peak of the genre until 23+ years later, and it feeling revolutionary compared to all the slop games developers make these days.
I wish a developer could get Wiz 6 & 7 into this engine, Or that Wiz 9 was made with this games system as the base.
It is a great Wizardry game, but without the grid-based movement, the series is famous for. The graphics may be outdated, but still it doesn't hold back from enjoying this fantastic title.
Great classic game, love the turn based system
I took a step back to play a game I had played a lone time ago in game terms. The game still has a lot of fun points and is easy to understand and play. Combat is more a distance fight than I remember which is a bit of a pain as most of the charters are close in fighters.
a classic filled with personality
I am having so much fun with this game. This is old school at it's finest and I am just getting started.
good
great game
very difficult in places
nostalgic
but......
whomever created the lockpicking mechanic...
I HATE YOU
It is bloody torture!!!!!!!
