Among epic cRPGs, vast big-budget open-world adventures and classic horror games... X-Morph is one of my favourite games, despite being... Tower Defense?
How did that happen?
... They just made the best tower defense. By such a great degree there's no real competition.
It's beautiful, deadpan funny, has an incredible dedication to a 90s aesthetic that never was - brighter, more vibrant, more detailed and richly animated. It has some of the best physics simulation in the industry for flexible complex structures collapsing dynamically in response to accidental or intentional damage with great tactical and strategic effect.
The boss battles keep escalating into the absurd, turning the tower defense into outright bullet-hell (that you can avoid at any time by engaging Ghost Mode, to return to the building system and escape combat to heal), and the game never gets boring, despite some missions being technically optional, allowing you to play a shorter or longer campaign.
It's just so well designed, and so satisfying. I'd need to write an essay to break down the psychology of how they nailed tower defense's best qualities as a genre while removing or ameliorating its many flaws. It's a deeply satisfying casual spaceship shooter, the peak tower defense game strategically, and an epic spectacle.
You should play it and make everyone else you know play it.
May I one day be awake enough to rewrite this a little more persuasively instead of just insisting it's incredible... but it is.
Great! Very good tower defense game. It reminds me of those railgun arcade cabinet games. Simple and fun with really cool boss fights.
Played this one after The Riftbreaker and it was a quicker game than Riftbreaker. Don't get me wrong, it's more of the same tower defense with simpler tech tree, but the same mechanics that I enjoyed, just more brief. Much more easier to play a game here or there instead of committing a large chunk of time.
Great tower defense. If you like TD games you'll most likely enjoy it a lot. I've been playing on the hardest difficulty and it has been challenging enough while still continuing to be very satisfying. Rounds are fast, checkpoints are good and restarting is also very quick on most scenarios. It is well balanced and gives you enough freedom to come up with strategies for your mazes and tower placements. The same thing can be said about the split-screen co-op campaing, although the camera could be slightly zoomed out for this mode. There is a level-editor, so you get a few extra levels made by other people. And finally there are two expansions that add more missions and enemy types, plus one that adds survivor mode. I didn't get these as I plan to move on after the main campaing, but people seem to find them mostly positive.
My small complaints that I don't think are deal breakers:
1. The base/core could have a numerical HP indicator, not only a health bar.
2. The towers could have clearer stats info, as an example, numbers indicating their DPS and such instead of just blue squares.
3. With mouse and keyboard the selection of a built tower could be more forgiving, instead of requiring you to match your squared mouse idicator perfectly with the tower's, which currently leads to some annoying, rarely round losing, miss-clicks.
4. The timer and resources collection needed for a perfect score could be shown prior to or even during a mission, so you wouldn't need to guess or look it up somewhere else.
5. Some of the upgrades are not as useful/fun as most of the others. The EMP, the fiery artillery, upgraded resources collector and earth shaking tower are quite useless.
It's fun!
So, I just finished the campaign. Haven't tried the
Check the map and routes, place your towers, defend the wave and repeat.
The Good:
- Good mix tower building at one leisure and frantic action.
- Enough variety of enemies. The bosses are cool, specially the spider.
- The destructible environment is not only for fun and looks as sometimes can affect the paths.
- Overall it's made to be enjoyed. Can switch difficulty at the beginning of every level. Also the upgrades and tech points can be redistributed. There is no penalty for selling and rebuilding towers.
The Bad:
- Not a game for long sessions as it can feel repetitive.
- Not enough bosses. Systematically blowing gigantic war machines while the city is blown a part it's so much fun but happens just a few times in all the campaign and then...
- ...the towers are too good at dealing with bosses, to the point it makes more sense to let them do it while we are elsewhere and then lose all the boss fighting fun.
- The weapons aren't balanced. Laser it's too good at dealing with almost anything.
On the one hand, it's a fun little top down shooter and tower defense game. The major downside is the level editor doesn't seem to work under Proton and there is little support now that the game has been out for several years. The game is very short, but also cheap on sale. If you can get it on sale, do so. I just wish the devs would fix the level editor so I could give it a better review.
Hi,
an awesome twist to tower defense games, blending fast-paced shooter mechanics with strategic tower placement in a way that is fresh and addictive.
-Tearing through waves of enemies with impressive firepower, all of the weapons have their own use, when used correctly is truely satisfying.
-Switching between planning your defenses and joining the fight directly. is a great flow. which is also a defensive mechanic. Fighting mode you are volnurable and can attack. switching to defensive mod you become undamagable and the enemy is unable to see you.
-The environments are destructible, adding a fun layer of chaos that lets you shape the battlefield in real-time, blocking paths or taking down buildings to manipulate enemy routes. The visuals are sharp and detailed, with explosive effects that make each encounter feel cinematic and satisfying.
Overall, X-Morph: Defense delivers a rock-solid experience, It’s challenging but fair. it is also a game where you can play coop. Give it a shot.
Why does it feel so good to take over the planet and kill all humans? Overall I enjoyed the single player campaign. It is a good tower defense game, making the most out of the levels by changing the paths between the waves and allowing to place towers in a variety of ways as well as destroying buildings to block paths.
X-Morph: Defense
pros:
//fast game with modern day graphics with easy controls that moves from location A to B to C and so on
//good amount of action and special effects
cons:
//a lot of difficult battles/boss battles
//some overpowered enemies
//too many enemies constantly spawn
//too much stuff happening on screen making it difficult to see what is going on
//somewhat repetitive with minor objectives changes
//some lack of directions/instructions
//requires a lot of micromanagement
//too many enemy waves per area
//good game
Personal Suggested Purchase Price: $0.99 Or Less During Sale
Reminds me of Riftbreaker and the absolute fun i had there. 9.9/10. ONLY BECAUSE OF THAT ONE OPEN LEVEL THAT STILL DRIVES ME INSANE!!! buy it if you like to build crazy mazes or bases :D
I love tower defense games, so I gave this one a try. Overall, the game is well made. Graphics are okay for the age, the sound and narration is good too.
Why a negative rating? Although the game is advertised as a fusion of tower defense and vertical shooter, the tower defense element comes up far too short. Without the support of the small ship that you control, any placement of the towers is completely irrelevant. It feels like the turrets are just a graphical add-on without any significant function. There is no relaxed play and observe whether the placement of the towers was effective. The game is constantly fast-paced, as you have to constantly fly across the entire map to fend off attacks, which the turrets are unable to do. Whether the turrets work sensibly cannot really be assessed because there is no time for this. The element of losing and realigning the turrets is also completely lost here, as basically only the direct manual attack on the incoming units makes a difference.
After less than three hours, I give up in frustration.
Incredible tower defense game. Superb mechanic at the root of the fun: the laser fence that allows you to build your own optimized paths for the enemy. Great level design to make use of that mechanic as well. Enemy unit variety was also excellent, with well designed waves of various compositions that have to be approached differently.
Very innovative Tower Defense game where you can divert the enemy's path by placing towers connected with fences or by blowing up nearby buidings so that they fall in the path, acomplishing the same goal as the fenced towers and shooting at them with your fighter.
Allows (and sometimes requires) a lot of creativity from the players' side to delay and destroy all the different vehicles the Humans send at you. If you want to be extra creative you can also destroy bridges while the tanks are crossing or trowing a skyscrapper on top of them instead of destroying them beforehand, so you get a few kills while doing so.
Playtime is relatively short, of only a few hours with 14 campaign missions. The DLCs are nice, expand on the story and add a few more levels, challenging too. Game also has a small workshop of levels you can download and play.
I had a lot of fun in the main campaign and it's definitively a game I'll come back to from time to time, so I recommend it if you like tower defense games or a lot of action. Story is cool too.
Lots of fun silly entertainment with big explosions, enormous bosses, and fun along the way. There's a demo, so if the phrase "tower defence + twin stick shooter" appeals I recommend checking that out. It'll be far more effective than any review for giving you an idea if this'll be your sort of fun. Personally, I tried the demo and immediately bought the full version, and it's set up so you can just continue automatically without repeating anything! Thumbs up for that.
I've been itching for a good tower defense game, and this scratched the itch. A solid 8.5/10. Took me 13 hours to beat everything, but I loved every minute of it.
Really simple gameplay loop but fun as hell!
I just wish the construction of the towers were a bit more fleshed out and improved so that you could have a bit more strategic placement of the towers allowing to make more and better "combos" with them.
4 hours in this game and i am absolutely loving it and since it on sale i advice you to grab it, what i love about it drives me crazy just to make an absolute ridiculous long road for enemies to take. makes you as sane as a german scientist.
pure chaos and insanely fun. an absolute hidden gem of tower defense genre. 10000/10
nice game
funtastic
Fun game, seems to be a memory leak related to Audio. My Audio device disappears and I have to restart. It then shows a memory leak error when I restart PC.
A Great Indie Tower Defense plus with a Bullet hell Air combat game!
Mucho worth the 1 dollar
Played the demo and really enjoyed it.
Bought the full game and it would never launch and clearly others are having the same issue too on the discussions page. Sucks but refunding.
If you like Tower Defense, but with a lot more Action (kind of Bullet-Hell), huge explosions and you being the Bad-Guy - don't look any further, have fun!
Maybe you liked the "running around with a Robot" from "Rift Breaker", well you get it here, but flying. Even a lot of the UI and Soundeffects are the same, but that's not bad, because ... why not? It looks good, it sounds good, why invent the wheel again.
The game is playable with Mouse & Keyboard or with Controller, both work good, but placing and upgrading Towers need a bit of work / getting used to, no matter with what you play. I played on a Steam-Deck in Desktop-Mode and it runs flawless, no slowdown, even when half the Map is burning or a Skyscraper collapses.
So if you look for Action Packed Tower Defense with a Twist, have fun!
For 1 buck, it’s a total steal. It's a simple action TD.
gra 6/10, na pewno do niej wrócę
BEST 83p I EVER SPENT.
really engaging game play, the "support" flyship makes it different, the path designing even better
Defeated final wave on the first campaign mission and got stuck. Got a refund
This game is totally fun.... but it sadly lacks an multiplayer lan/online mode... it's nice that it offers splitscreen what's not very common today but... yeah would love to play that Game online with friends!
Would recommend it to a lot of friends in case of possibility
The game is very chaotic, but in a fun way. You play as a controllable alien ship, which can be upgraded as time progresses. Your mission is to defend your core from enemies' forces by building towers and defenses. Almost everything in the game is destructible, so you can cause some environmental damage by bombing buildings to shape the enemies' path. It's definitely recommended for anyone interested in tower defense.
cool td game
Really love this game. Excellent game. I have only just started but i would like to see where this goes. I got this game on special and its well worth every cent! Definitely one of the better tower defense/strategy games out there.
9/10
Slightly buggy, but otherwise very fun so far. Great mix of tower defense and star fighter mechanics.
Best 1€ I've ever spent !
I got this game since I like Riftbreaker and it was a fun experience.
However this game, I am not getting the smooth game play that I am seeing in the trailer or other player's game play. I've already turned off all the overlay and RGB light setting that everyone is mentioning but the menu and the overall game is still lagging. (note: My PC can run all the new game at the highest settings without any issue and keeps 60 fps.)
Very fun and balanced, will definitely be replaying. Despite being an overpowered ship with plenty of ways to attack them I still find myself frantically flying around trying to build/upgrade towers and take out priority targets. I've only played hard mode (on all maps + DLC) and definitely recommend as it's just the right difficulty. Bosses are a fun challenge and destructible environments are incredible and useful. You're able to save between rounds and pick it up later which was very helpful during the later stages. Give it a try!!!
Great for $5 (on sale). Tower Defence at its finest. Solid 8 hrs of play. There is a co-op component, but its on maps you already successfully done at BRONZE level completion minimum (I realise this doesn't make sense). Most of the sound minus verbal is taken from his other game 'The Rift Breaker'.
Ever wondered what it feels like to be an alien invader with a penchant for urban redevelopment? Look no further than X-Morph: Defense! This game lets you live out your wildest extraterrestrial fantasies of turning Earth into your personal playground of destruction.
First off, the plot is simple: You’re an alien species here to harvest Earth’s resources. But let’s be real, the real fun is in the mayhem you can cause. Imagine SimCity, but instead of building, you’re gleefully tearing everything down. Skyscrapers? More like sky-fallers. Bridges? Perfect for collapsing under the weight of your alien tech.
The gameplay is a delightful mix of tower defense and top-down shooter. You get to build elaborate mazes of death for the poor human forces trying to stop you. It’s like setting up a Rube Goldberg machine of doom. And when you’re not busy planning their demise, you can jump into the fray yourself, blasting everything in sight with your alien arsenal. It’s like being the world’s most destructive party planner.
The graphics are surprisingly detailed. Watching buildings crumble in realistic detail is oddly satisfying. It’s like a Michael Bay movie, but you get to be the director of all the explosions. And let’s not forget the joy of seeing tiny human soldiers running around in panic. It’s like watching ants scatter when you kick their anthill, but with more lasers and explosions.
Sure, the story might not win any awards, but who needs a deep narrative when you have the sheer joy of causing chaos? Plus, the game doesn’t take itself too seriously. It’s like the developers knew exactly what we wanted: pure, unadulterated fun.
In conclusion, X-Morph: Defense is the perfect game for anyone who has ever wanted to be the bad guy and have a blast doing it. Just remember, with great power comes great responsibility… or in this case, great opportunities for destruction. Happy invading!
I guess I must like this game. I mean I played it on Xbox and decided to get it here too. The boss fights are fairly unique and add a new wrinkle compared to most other TD games. Also it's fun playing the invading aliens for once. Now I have mentioned in reviews of other tower defense games that I generally prefer a tower defense only game as compared to tower defense / hero unit hybrids. That is true. I mean Defense Grid 2 is my favorite TD game. However the twin stick bullet hell hybrid of this game is a lot of fun. Sometimes I wish you had more resources so you could rely on your towers to do more and not have to rely on your hero unit for as much as you do. Having said that, I do still enjoy this game and would recommend.
Great mix of tower defense and shoot em up bullet hell kinda. Really worth a try and it runs smooth on low spec PC and the graphics are good too. Very fun, I've beaten it twice now, once here and once on PS4.
Fun to play
Probably THE best tower defense games I've ever played!
I knew of this game through Riftbreaker. Such an underrated gem. I love both games. EXOR Studios, you guys are the best.
Original game is great. DLC tries to make it more RTS and less TD Puzzle, which I didn't like.
One of the most fun Tower Defense games I've played and like the mechanics between building and shooting.
This is a wonderful game, what a surprise it was... it's a action tower defense game, much like Sanctum 2, where you place your towers to influence the path of the enemy, and instead of just letting them do the work, you are also a unit that goes around doing damage, in this case, as a spaceship doing some top-down shooter combat.
The action is non-stop, as the ship you are always active, one of the game's greatest strenghts is never having down-time. Not to say you'll be constantly overwhelmed, it's very well paced, but you'll always be doing something. Shooting and observing how effective your towers are and collecting destroyed enemy scrap, flying back-and-forward to juggle multiple lanes. You can also build mid-round in a pinch. It's the only tower defense game I've played that does NOT need a fast-forward button at all.
The tower placement is pretty unique, you can greatly shape the path of the enemy, much like Sanctum, but in a more dynamic way. The grid is a lot smaller and blockades can be made in any wacky ways you can think of... very satisfying to force an enemy path to do a Loop-the-loop around street blocks.
My favorite part of the game is how dynamic everything is, almost everything is destructible and all the bits have physics to them, and it's not all just for eye-candy, lots of it has purpose. Enemy debris can be collected for points and extra build materials, smaller buildings when destroyed can open up new paths for enemies to use, or open up line-of-sight for your turrets, and larger buildings can tumble onto roads, the debris blocking whole paths for the enemy, and also doing damage if anything under. Plus it IS just extremely satisfying to use a bomb and see all the things explode majestically around.
And the graphics are pretty charming I'd say... it has a late PS3/360 vibe to it, but while still having plenty of vivid color and appealing visual effects. I don't know if this 7th gen vibe was intentional or not, but I appreciate it none the less, the first level looks straight out of Metal gear rising or Resident evil 5, but with high res textures and modern niceties. Not stunning, but I'd call it very competent.
So yea, that's about it, it's just a bit of a hidden gem, found it at random, it was dirty cheap, didn't expect much and was blown away by the quality. Extremely fun, recommend it to everyone, even if top-down shooters arent your thing, they aren't mine, it STILL hooked completely.
Interesting tower defense, but it maybe too hard for me
One of the better TD. Also not too easy. Good optimization (runs solid 60fps on steam deck).
I only dislike the mechanics to suck in dead enemies for extra ressources or rather that you can not skip this mechanics: You suck in debris from dead enemies. The debris does not linger/stack too long. That means you have to switch into "ghost" mode to suck in debris. Switch back to normal mode to fight and back to ghost to suck in and build. You get used to it. Getting extra ressources wins you the game so hard to not use.
Full Prize: Maybe...
