Doing absolutely nothing is genuinely less boring than this game.
I got the game at a descent sale. After about 9 game hours I purchased the dlc. And it improves the main game loop by making it more alive, at least in the early or mid game, but I am still in the middle of the game. Great value.
One of the few rare roguelikes, where the game being roguelike is justified - though keep in mind I played with the DLC.
While I am not the biggest fan of the metaprogression currency grind, the game has a solid story that is well implemented within the roguelike formula - as well good motivation to try different ships and builds.
The game has great variety of environments, acitvities, weapons, enemies and builds. One issue beign, you SHOULD play on easy to experience the most out of it and gain enough power and unlocks for other difficulties. While the game tells you you get less, in reality you get way more progress by playing on easy, as you get way further and that is where you get majority of the progression.
Even on easy, the game is fairly challenging and fun to explore, where as if you play on medium, you will be stuck (if you are noob like me) in firstcouple areas, which are ultimately the blandest, least interesting and with the worst content.
Endgame regions are very fun to explore, as there is lot to find, and they are pretty beautiful.
Couple words to DLC, it is amazing, as it provides stories that progress through the runs, and all of them are good, and meaningfully impact the gameplay exprience as well. Or in other words, without it, I assume, game is way worse off.
PROS:
Graphics, sound, all that space jazz
Pretty good story
DLC stories and content
Great gameplay
Good amount of variety of activities
Good amount of builds, ships and gameplay options
The runes are really cool, unlike the meta currency gathering
DLC
CONS
Meta currency gathering sucks
Medium difficulty is needlessly hard at first
Easy difficulty is good at first, but there is missing something between easy/normal
Need to own the DLC, they should really just merge it into one game
Great game, I prefer it a lot over the second one, which I played a little at friend’s place, did not like how they changed it at all, but guess I am in a minority. Still, this is one of my all time space favourites and I do recommend it.
One of the few very fun games in VR, like flying in a cockpit with an XBOX controller in tow. Fight spaceship style like in the movies.
Game is pretty bad, even on discount. I expected more, but I've got a budget game, with really bad user interface, and btw it is unbelievably boring. Do not buy this game, I would have refunded if I could.
I bought this game expecting a very "in-depth" survival mode. But in just about 30 minutes I was bored and unfufilled. Ther graphics are really good however the gameplay is not.
Good game to jump into for short gameplay.
possibly the worst controls ever designed by man
No explanation of what to do or how to do it. Game starts with a tutorial, but tutorial explains almost nothing and after dying several times in the first few minutes I'm done with this game.
Its okay.
Great game, fun flight mechanics easy to learn. Bit of a repetitive gameplay loop as most rogue likes are but I find it perfect to escape to when I'm up late and need to burn an hour or 2
Don't be dissuaded by the "small number of ships", which is what I mainly see people complain about. This is a brilliant semi-persistent roguelike (in that, after every run you spend the resources or money you gained to upgrade or unlock new things, so you go farther next time, etc etc). The ships are classes. Don't think of it as lacking the requisite 74 differently styled corvettes and 45 frigates and carriers etc, you'd be approaching it from the wrong angle.
You've, roughly speaking, got your rogue, wizard, and generic warrior. With the expansion (which I believe just comes with a bundle at below the old price of the base game, since ES 2 came out) you get another ship which would be more like a "technician" in a Doomrl-esque sci-fi roguelike.
That said, the build systems are deep and the gameplay loop is wonderful. A run is structured in exactly the same way as in FTL (I know ES is at least a decade old, I'd rather not feel old by looking up which came first). Either one was inspired by the other or both we inspired by something I'm unaware of, but the overmap progression system is the same. The depth is much, well, deeper, in this game. You even have varying loadout unlocks similar to FTL, but there are a lot of other systems at work as well that ftl lacks.
If you're having trouble deciding, just think of it as 3d ftl with very fast paced and compelling "arcade" style dogfighting (for the most part). I love a good sim and all but I've always felt that zero-g makes for an un-fun reality when implemented. I leave my hard sci-fi in my books. Fluid physics is, in my opinion, the way to go for space games unless you're specifically making a sim, like elite dangerous. To each his/her own, but I think they made the right decision. "Arcadey" does not mean easy mode, either.
This game scratches an itch I didn't know that I had. There are many games that set out to do exactly this, but on a 2-d plain and with "realistic" physics (in two dimensions... I mean, people can enjoy what they like but it seems pointless to me). I wanted FTL, but I could really pilot the ship, and not from a top-down view. I didn't know I wanted it until I found it, though. As an aside, it's not on steam but I did know that I wanted mount and blade in space and starsector (make sure to google essential mods, just like m&b you really need them) is that.
FYI to anyone considering if they should buy this one or the sequel: THEY ARE DIFFERENT GENRES.
I can't speak to the plot, bits and bobs get revealed when you hit new milestones but I'm only 5 hours in, I head that it fleshes it out more though.
From what I've seen the actual flying is more-or-less the same, fleshed out and expanded as one would expect from a sequel, but it is a (possibly open world? I'm seeing conflicting things) narrative game. The original game is a semi-persistent roguelike, the sequel eschews that entirely. I don't know if they added a lot more ships to the game, but for me I think I would need a lot more than 4 if I'm not playing a roguelike and have to make my way through a plot based game.
I hear ES 2 is excellent, and the cult-like playerbase actually responded positively to a full-on genre change. I mean, I think if you know gamers there can be no higher praise than for a dedicated fanbase not to lose their minds when you change a core element of a game. ES 1 is cheaper and a different game, you don't need to play it to play ES 2 in any way in terms of lore (from what I understand), but ES 1 will show you what you're getting into with 2 at a lower price-point, and be sufficiently different that you'll get equal enjoyment out of both, even switching between. They scratch different itches.
My only complaint is that nobody told me about this sooner.
ah nothing like the game saying it supports vr and it just lying to you. only reason i got the game and now i have no intrest in playing nor can i even refund it. i thought surly of all games this one woulnt have problems so i didnt test it when i bought it and boy do i regret it. i wouldnt mind playing this game not in vr but if you cant make one of your big selling points work like at all. im willing to bet the game is garbage. if you cant get the feature to work just remove it.
I can't be bothered to go into why. I didn't pay much for it, but it was too much.
Boring
4/5 star
Just a great space combat game.enjoy every moment of playing it.
Not sure why this is so highly rated. I would probably enjoy this more if the game spent more time explaining the mechanics instead of the M.C. whining or the flavorless co-pilot AI droning on and on about worthless crap when Im facing 7 enemies simultaneously in first experience in the 2nd zone.
The graphics is stunning! even better if it has normal map not just some sort of level!
Good game
Good.
a lot of fun. great arcade-style space combat flight game. it was very difficult to get my controller set up, but besides that, I have nothing else negative to say in ~6 hours of play. sometimes the RNG sucks, but that comes with the roguelike element. no reason I wouldn't recommend this, but if you're set on playing with a controller, expect a big hassle.
Very fun spaceship fighting game
Fun enough
8/10 - Extra fast looter-shooter (well, in space ;))
Everspace is a super fast rouge-like "flight-simulator", with beautiful graphics, that i really enjoyed. It is in fact one of my favorite games in this genre.
Positive:
- Super fast shooter
- random generated levels
- RPG-isch
- AAA Visuals
- Controller-Support
- fitting soundtracks
- all ships have their own special skills and battle-tactics
Negative:
- Not enough ships to choose from
- gets boring to quick
- id love more hidden secrets or something to keep me playing
- feels grindy immediately (yes i know, rouge-like)
genuine fun space sim, could use some minor upgrades and higher compatibility for apple ios users, but overall 5 stars, great!
I can't recommend. It's OK, nothing special. Yay space, but that's about it.
starts a run
dies
starts another run
dies at sector 2
10/10
Not even worth wasting hard drive space. Confusing HUD. The pilot seat has the size of a tennis court. No speed adjustment, only forward and boost which you have to keep pressed. Failed 8 times to pass the tutorial. Horrible stearing. Was even looking up the credits to have a look who made this what never happened before. Maybe it's me, but I will not wasting more time figuring it out.
I play Elite Dangerous in VR and and the gap in comparison is from the bubble to colonia and back.
honestly super fun the best way to experience this gem is by muting the music and throwing on a guardians of the galaxy playlist
Decent but grindy. Enemy and weapon variety is quite limited, and the story is a bit too generic and hence bland, but overall a fairly polished experience. I enjoy space sims in general, so this gets my biased recommend.
its a space rogue like and you can play the second one right now but i don't know about that one, this is good though
Really fun and entertaining. More primary weapons would be nice though.
Hostile NPC's approach so closely to the player ship that the player has difficulty tracking them as they orbit in random directions and speeds. Poor basic game design.
It's WORTH IT, even if you have already played Everspace 2. SO MUCH FUN!
its fun
i just cant like the Everspace its too repetitive to finish the game just like a work disquise as a game, i though that i will find a game like freelancer where you could grind by doing some mission then upgrading your ship while enjoy the story , but its a rouge like space fight where you die endlessly for like 5 minutes story
I never liked such type of games, that you do the same thing over and over again.
But as I grow old, have kids, wife and less time, I do start to appreciate those games.
Everspace is the perfect space casual game.
Graphics are good. You do the same over and over again, but still there is progress. You can have a short session of fun. You don't have to remember complex story. Shoot shoot shoot. Controller or mouse+keyboard, you are covered.
It doesn’t reach for the stars as a roguelike, but Everspace’s strong visuals and feel make it a journey to remember nonetheless.
Biggest positives:
+ It’s fun to make the spaceships fight
+ Gorgeous cosmic skyboxes
Other notes:
- Doesn’t take long for collecting pickups to become a chore

472 hours in I can definately recommend this game.
Do you like investing time in roguelike development?
Slow but sure improvement, lots of random unfariness.
A hardcore mode that is not even remotely fair.
full 3D goggles support.
Great game
vr is a bit tricky at first but once you get your head around 6 dof its great :)
Its worth the price
Absolutely fun game play, and the graphics are absolutely awesome, even after 8 years (!, 2017 is already that far back) but it won't kill your power bill, even under epic graphics settings.
I either suck at this game or it is hard, I think both might be accurate. It's never really unfair, sometimes the swarms of enemies is simply overwhelming, I thought I could beat a mk2 corvette (missing a ARC-10 and spamming 8 plasma torpedoes _nearly_ did the trick), or I thought I can get the dark matter from a black hole without a teleporter. Did the latter far too often.
Got it really cheap a while ago, and I'm going to buy the DLC on the next sale.
I started off with ES2, which is also a fun game, but I'm astounded that they have the same name, it's like comparing apples and pears. Both are excellent. Can absolutely recommend both.
Good game
Don't bother for VR, you can't see the targets on the hud, they briefly appear and then disappear when you turn to face them making it impossible to play.
Its strange to me that the ratings for this game have gone from very positive to mostly positive over the years and mixed recent reviews despite the game not changing at all. It seems that people may be judging this game through a different lens now but I do not know what that would be. Regardless while this game isn't perfect its a beautifully crafted fun little arcade space rogue-like. The game play is great and perfect for sitting down and going through a few sectors for short sessions, upgrading your ship and unlocking new load outs and abilities in subsequent runs. Something I noticed playing this vs other rogue-likes is I never really get upset when I die in this one, it always feels deserved. Whether I took on an Okkar Corvette thinking I was stronger than I was or I stumble upon an ancient alien being that zaps me from existence because I got too curious, its all part of the experience and you spend your credits upgrading one of the 4 unique ships and start again to stumble upon new things. There's definitely some FTL inspiration here but its not nearly as punishing (not to say this game can't be pretty challenging). If you don't like rogue like games this will not be for you. But if you want a time killer that will immerse you and take you on some great adventures then this is definitely worth a meager $20. As a side note the $10 DLC is highly recommended and adds even more replayability although it definitely could've been a free update.
Once again Steam forces us into black and white. This is a good game for what it is, and I will continue to play it. But issues with its rugged devotion to the rogue-like trend and the DLC/pricing stop it from reaching its full potential. The game feels barebones without the DLC and then when you get it all of the sudden you have story, it feels like the way the game was meant to be played. It's a shame they locked it behind a paywall. Wish I could give a thumbs up on this one but can't.
Really fun game. Much better than the second one.
Fun space sim x roguelite dungeon crawler (no it's not a simulator, its space fantasy starfighter game like bsg/star wars)
i.e. dynamically generated 3D open nothingness with a cool skybox, and asteroids, and a few space stations + enemies.
Simple WASD arcade flight controls, you can strafe around in space head to head, so I guess it's 6dof enough,
Wing Commander shields + hull healthpools, guns and missiles.
It's not very deep though.
The plot doesn't keep you on the edge of your seat, since after all that dying I forgot about the motivation of the main character, you play as clone each time you die. I'm getting bored after 20 hours.
Playing everspace again?
