Once again Steam forces us into black and white. This is a good game for what it is, and I will continue to play it. But issues with its rugged devotion to the rogue-like trend and the DLC/pricing stop it from reaching its full potential. The game feels barebones without the DLC and then when you get it all of the sudden you have story, it feels like the way the game was meant to be played. It's a shame they locked it behind a paywall. Wish I could give a thumbs up on this one but can't.
Fun space sim x roguelite dungeon crawler (no it's not a simulator, its space fantasy starfighter game like bsg/star wars)
i.e. dynamically generated 3D open nothingness with a cool skybox, and asteroids, and a few space stations + enemies.
Simple WASD arcade flight controls, you can strafe around in space head to head, so I guess it's 6dof enough,
Wing Commander shields + hull healthpools, guns and missiles.
It's not very deep though.
The plot doesn't keep you on the edge of your seat, since after all that dying I forgot about the motivation of the main character, you play as clone each time you die. I'm getting bored after 20 hours.
definitely yes!
Everyone who enjoys a combat space sim must play this rogue style game. It is simple but surprisingly challenging.
Needs some tinkering to stop stuttering, outside of that decent game on sale. Good game tho so it's a good buy!
I HATE ROGUELIKES
with that in mind Is it worth full retail no
Is it worth 20$ for the base game + encounters yes
the 3 annoyances i have with this game are
You NEED to turn your mouse dpi AND in game sensitivity way the hell down
there is a clear winner among the 4 ships and 1 that is just bad
the progression on the dlc quests is incredibly uneven
the game play loop sound design and even the story are all quite nice 8/10 do recommend
(the sequel is not so great)
I believe its is a bad game development when you start game hard mode, and then while upgrading your "illusion of progress" and then after a while of repetative "progress" getting better ship- according to game, and improving your own skills, have harder and harder time getting same progress done as you did initially. I see developer screwing up my gameplay by having ships ported randomly about instance im in. And doing absolutely no damage with guns that did a ton when trying them out first time. If i play normal mode there is hardly any action. Playing easy mode there are literally maps with no targets to shoot other then few rocks that give already stacked up useless resource that will never get used. Its waste of my fun, and waste of developers work. Well its closer to being annoying than any eventulal fun event. Basically thanks for scam is all i can say. Learn how to code so that games that are produced actually work, instead of being unstable as the people that make them. Its stupid that you have to play a game where all sence of achieving anything is taken away by "developers" induced sense that you were let to win/progress or whatever it is believed to be achieved. Its one or none bool's world any they think they will find some 3rd value. I don't understand why developers do this. Selling a scam to scam themselves. Thanks but no thanks. I payed to be made angry. I can only hope there is carma to settle this, im not sorry to say load of crap.
The ship is hard to control and the gameplay was not compelling. There is nothing about this game that makes me want to keep trying.
Wow are the controls awful event with M+K. Go play Chorus insted, that is loads of fun and you can make use of you controller as well...
I've read the negative reviews for this game and my conclusion is skill issue
The first time I encountered an Ancient I managed to kill it and then it spawned a black hole on death and killed me too.
11/10 peak gaming
I guess it's some sort of prank to give you so terrible controls and to throw a bunch of attackers into your face.
купил этот тайтл потому что в свое время играл в galaxy on fire 2.
в целом, классный рогалик, сложность сложная.
из-за "скрытого" таймера, всегда есть мотивация побыстрее свалить на след локацию )
Story, Characters, Handling, Crafting/Upgrading
all good fun
A roguelite space shooter, why not… but controls are awful, neither arcade nor simulation.
Messy fights without warnings, and I got my sensors burst off on my first run, it was just 30 minutes of being bored and fleeing invisible targets.
I would love to recommend this, it came so close.
It's a roguelite where you are in a spaceship and do dogfights and stuff.
Gives me big descent 3 vibes, just that it's open space and not mines.
And mostly it is fine.
But the game has two things that destroy my liking of it and double handedly change this from a recommend to a do not recommend.
Firstly is the fuel. You need special fuel to travel between systems. That would be fine. That fuel being rather rare would also be fine. But in most of my attempts, the fuel was not just rare, it was non-existant. ONCE, yes, a single time, I found one of those fuel rocks from the tutorial. Exactly one time in 5 hours of play. In the other attempts there were sometimes vendors that sold way too little fuel. You will run out and that may be the end of your run.
Second is the enforced time limit. Spend too long in a level, likely in the search of fuel, and enemies spawn that quickly kill you.
If either fuel was just rare instead of the stuff of legend, or if you actually got to fullly explore the areas with no time limit and perhaps find more of those fuel rocks, this would likely have been a recommend.
As it is, I'm glad I got it on winter sale for a buck, because then I can say it's well worth it, but I'd be pssed if I paid full price
Rogue-like == time-waste. Everything is repetitive.
You think you've played for 100 hours, but actually you just repeated a same 10-minute segment 600 times.
They seem to have created an entire game, but actually, its 1/600 with Ctrl+C Ctrl+V 600 times.
However, if -95%, fine.
Very easy to get suck into the game. This random dungeon generator in space plays well and looks great.
Try to like the game, but the rogue-like aspect kill it for me.
my reaction time is a little slow for this game but i still had fun. the weapon systems are probably what i like the best. it all fit nicely for the size of the ship. solid game if you can keep up.
No mans sky ship combat is much better, games like these peaked with galaxy on fire 2.
If you like Freelancer or arcade-style space fighting, combined with rogue-like randomization and loot, you'll have fun with this! Good for a quick gaming session but it could get repetitive with nonstop play.
Game definitely worth taking a flyer on for a buck fifty... the whole galaxy is your shooting gallery!
EVERSPACE
pros:
//fast game with modern day graphics with easy controls that moves from location A to B to C and so on
//good amount of action and special effects
cons:
//a lot of difficult battles/objectives
//some overpowered enemies
//some enemies have unfair attacks
//could use more loot and resources
//sometimes too many enemies constantly spawn
//sometimes too many enemies gang up on you
//upgrades require a lot of resources
//collecting resources are a grindfest
//repetitive with minor objectives changes at the last sector
//some lack of directions/instructions
//if you lose you start over at sector one (no sector selection)
//some battles are at master level regardless of difficulty settings
//sometimes too many hazards/mines
//good game
Personal Suggested Purchase Price: $2.49 Or Less During Sale
The game where when you died, you'd say "welp, cant be helped" and then enthusiastly go for another run.
after hoarding a lot of money of course ;)
steep learning curve. prepare to die a LOT. overall good game challenging
Fun arcade style space flight. Mining, scanning, fighting through each area it's quite fun. Starts pretty easy, but gets difficult the deeper you get. Useful progression. A few different ships to choose from with different styles of fighting.
A very different game from EVERSPACE 2. You get one life and your simple goal is survival as you navigate from one area to the next. Quite challenging. You'll lose your ship easily in the beginning, but start to hold your own gradually after a run or two as you add capabilities to both your ship and pilot (the only perks that stay with you each time you attempt a run). Be sure to always search for fuel and don't make my repeated mistake of getting sucked into a black hole. 7/10.
Great arcade-style space shooter!
fun and i find myself thinking nah i dont want to start without anything again whilst clicking the button and sitting another 2hrs in a run just to die to the explosion of my own missile
A 3D space roguelike with combats, exploration, mining and crafting.
There are no other games like this one at the moment, it's a unique formula.
The gameplay is great with easy to learn controls.
Graphics are beautiful, it is accompanied with nice ships design (for both player and npcs).
A fun space action rogue-like. Mapping of the controls is very janky!
~ I started with the Encounters DLC so I'm not really sure what's base game or not, but the DLC is definitely worth buying for all the extra stuff ~
Something that always seemed to be missing in the 6DoF genre was large, open space maps with a few bits of terrain to hide behind, in contrast to all the cramped tunnel mazes. This game does exactly that with giant, often gorgeous and somewhat-randomly generated asteroid fields dotted by wrecks and junk. Even after seeing hundreds of the huge areas, I was only sometimes noticing repeat structures.
Perhaps as a necessary element for an open field game where enemies can shoot you from anywhere, they've leaned into being a deadly roguelite action experience. In this sci-fi setting full of alien races and robots, you have “infinite” lives and just as many single-fighter ships. You can buy permanent perks after each run, but anything not spent is lost.
Each run starts relatively easy but soon there'll be mines around things you want, tougher foes like giant ships and weird space creature, and menacing natural hazards from black holes and solar storms. Luckily there's a lot of friendly NPCs to meet along the way, starting with the local neutral mining corporation that offers trading and will fight anyone, and later a colorful cast of weirdos who give you missions and can start jumping in to fight alongside you.
There's four ships to choose from: the basic all-rounder Interceptor, the speedy Scout which can get a better sensor range and jump faster, the tanky Gunship that can install turrets and improve drones, and the smart Sentinel that can hack faster and install more mods. Additionally, the four ships each have up to three starting loadouts, and can be further improved from the start by finding powerful enhancements to install or with perks to grant extra equipment.
Primary weapons come in a nice variety for different styles of play. You might have one with strong hull damage and another with strong shield damage where you switch back and forth as needed, while other weapons do both types well enough and hit instantly. There are extremely strong short range weapons for those who get good at dodging or have a strong shield, the heat-seeking weapons and shotguns are fun to use but ineffective, the super long range rifle requires some skill but can take out enemies before they know you're there, and a few have area splash which works great on foes flying in tight formation. They all use energy to fire and can be strengthened in a number of ways.
Secondary weapons range from the basic auto-guided missiles and strong dumb bombs to the beautiful missile spam battery and giant electric storm. The one I used most was the shield-ignoring corrosion missile because it could kill almost any small shield-reliant ship with one hit.
Next there's a large variety of fun tech, which is the third-most energy cost beyond primary weapons and boosting. These include shields which either have more hitpoints or return faster after being destroyed, EMPs which temporarily disable foes, big explosions with damage based on your energy, turning enemies into allies, electric storm machines, devices that slow down time, short-range teleportation, invisibility and much more, though many are restricted to certain ships.
Lastly, you can also pick up or create consumable items, such as boosters, drones, overrides, quick jumps, nanomachines and the (somewhat useless) mines. As is common with videogame potions, they can be easy to forget or you might save them too long, but like everything else, they can be crafted from basic ingredients found in the field. The crafting system is quick and easy to use, with the only restrictions being your inventory and having the recipe.
This is the kind of game where your knowledge is a big part of how far you go. You need to learn which weapons and devices are actually good, you need to prepare for future threats, and you'll discover how close you can get to black holes. If you shoot an item box on a station's landing deck, they'll turn hostile and try to kill you because you were supposed to know that wasn't yours.
All of this takes place in a decently interesting political situation. Two space empires were fighting but then signed a truce and created a demilitarized zone which became a haven for outlaw pirates raiding the area's giant mining company. You were a scientist for one of the empires and now you need to cross the zone while being chased by outlaws, the mining company if you attack them, and of course the other empire because you're not supposed to be there.
The sci-fi writing is excellent; the tech feels fully thought-out and used well, and there's a bunch of good arms manufacturer lore entries in the codex. Unfortunately, the writing for scenes and dialogue tends to be really awkward or stilted. Certain final scenes just kill off characters without warning. Only the main voice actors sound like they know what they're doing and at a B-movie sort of level, while everyone else feels like the team pulled in a rando who tried to sound dramatic.
Buying upgrades after a run is a great reward at first, but starts to feel like doing taxes if you want to use every last hundred credits. Your choices are to throw away money or do math every time. And each run can be a serious time commitment, anywhere from 2 to 4 hours if you search every field for the things you need to survive later, though you can save and quit at any time and continuing brings you back to the start of the field so you never lose more than ten minutes or so of progress.
Combat is very fun when you get used to the speed and create a good build, but you might want to start at the easier difficulties and work you way up to harder challenges. Restarting a map if my emergency shield activated was how I first reached the ending, and certain enhancements helped a lot afterwards. Every enemy will lock on, thus the most important thing to learn is dodging, which is moving in a spiral pattern so shots from ahead or behind will arrive where you were.
Lastly and perhaps least importantly, there's an option in the main menu to play hardcore mode, which is extremely hard to the point of being unfun. First they make you buy your perks again and not having enough core energy is a common cause of death, then they add a further rough downgrade between each of the 7 sectors such as disabling secondary weapons or breaking your engine.
But overall, the main game is fun across 50 or more hours and well worth trying, especially for 6DoF enthusiasts and anyone who likes space shooters.
A fantastic space fighter. I was skeptical as to doing a rogue like via space combat. It is very well made.
Everspace is a decent ship combat game, but a terrible roguelike. The core gameplay is solid, but the lack of variety makes the game very tedious after a few hours.
On the surface this game is very good, but after a few hours it really begins to show how shallow it is. Great visuals that become extremely samey very fast, fun combat that becomes annoying when you realise how little variety in enemy design there is, poorly thought out and balanced systems. It's just a mess of wasted potential.
This game really was so close to being great, but if a roguelike gets boring after just a few hours, then it has failed miserably.

It's a must buy for me. Perfect gameplay and amazing visuals.
I can't change controlls on my Gamepad which has one Cross and two Thumbsticks.
Manouvering is on the right Stick, so I can either shoot or flight. Thats unplayable. :(
Maybe there's a solution and I'm just too dumb for this. But I don't like overcomplicated Space Games, so I refund after 10 Minutes. Hopefully Everspace 2 is better.
LOL What? Ok the first few "jumps" I thought were just a game mechanic to help tutorialize the gamer. Turns out, that's the whole game. Find the green swirl, move towards it for a set amount of time without diverting, and then you jump. After 4-6 "nodes". you converge on what is essentially the same mechanic, but called a "jump gate", which "warps" you to another "sector". Rinse and repeat. That's about it! You might get a contrived cut scene between sectors for a very forced and Anglo-Saxon oriented chiseled jaw line military conscript friend turned enemy turned friend story line... but yea, that's about it.
Ye'old "shoot the lads", egads. Worth $20.00? No. Worth $1.99? Maybe.
Once you've played Everspace 2 you won't want to play this. The game feels disjointed, a repeated path, dying again and again, grinding until you manage to pass each challenge. Everspace 2 is more polished in every way and provides a more cohesive experience.
An absolute marvel of a space combat sim that will keep you addicted and coming back for more! It takes a couple of hours kick in learning curve-wise, but once you get past the first 3rd hurdle of learning the game, the combat truly opens up. The breadth of selection of choices for taking out your enemies is pretty wide. Ranging from drone fleets, to missle volleys, stealth tech, override tools, and escape mechanisms.
Definitely a must buy for anyone who enjoys space combat sims.
There are only three ships for you to choose from, and most of your runs will be exactly the same. There is practically no enemy variety, with about 4 common enemy types and likewise almost no weapon variety. This lack of variety makes the game grow quickly repetitive and boring as all your runs will end up being exactly the same. Would only recommend if *heavily* discounted.
Runs very smooth on my laptop with a controller and I am enjoying the game, good graphics with some real space fights.
pretty damn-good sci-fi-flavored roguelike that fleshes out the fact that its a roguelike into the narrative. stuff we didn't see make it mainstream until 2019/2020 with games like slay the spire & hades. the controls are fluid and is one of the best space combat games i've ever had the pleasure of playing. as a completionist the game sort of lacked in the side quest department, i would've liked more in that regard. while i would say the game was small in scope despite feeling so large, it truly had a lot going for it that made it feel "bigger" and i'm quite interested in potentially trying everspace 2 in the future. my biggest complaint is the repetitiveness after a while, the early game especially feels really grindy and i can see that being a huge turn off for more casual players who don't want to spend 25+ hours for what is a fairly simplistic first entry from rockfish games (as far as im aware its their first non-mobile game)
The game have an interesting gameplay. I like space exploration games. But this game is sucks. It will freeze and crashes so often that its unplayable. Now that sucks
What a pile of garbage. It's like Elon Musk meets Mr Rogers. Total waste of money and desire to play a game that makes ant sense and at the same time fun. I would rather do without than play this game.
I had this game recommended to me by a friend.
Purchased on-sale (with Encounters DLC), but even so I believe it's worth the full price.
You start as Adam Roslin, on a journey to find out who you are and what's going on. The general objective is to traverse a total of seven randomly generated Sectors, each run culminating on the seventh sector.
With each death or completed run, you keep the currency/credits you earned and use them to upgrade your ship, unlock others and enhance your experience through various perks.
You also unlock / loot schematics and upgrades through your runs, allowing you to craft different weapons and devices with the materials you loot between sectors. Resources do not carry over after death - only credits.
As of this review I'm about 48hrs into the game and am nearing 100% completion; that said, I'd say the game offers 50 hours of gameplay overall.
If you're not the kind of person who's into "Die, Rinse, Repeat" games, this may not be for you.
But if you are, and you're keen on solid spaceship combat, I'd wholly recommend picking this up.
(As a sidenote, I would also recommend swapping your Strafe keys and your Turn keys around for better ship control)
A space-flight roguelike game, that offers a unique perspective into the well-established genre.
Great game simple and exciting
Great game, good story line and the combat system.
