old piece of shit morra
I've been playing Gothic 1 and 2 for more 2 decades at this point and consider them one of the best RPGs I've ever played. Finally decided to try out the third one.
I knew so many horror stories about the performance and how it was rushed. Out of respect for the first 2 Gothics I was prepared for it regardless.
But nobody told me about trashiest enemies stunlocking me in some silly, rage inducing tripping-over animation and killing without any ability to do anything about it.
There's no timeline in the multiverse where I put up with this shit. The game is uninstalled before I lose any more hair.
Gameplay
Not as good ast the first 2 games, but still fun.
Good game, worse execution then for previous titles, we lost the beloved features to get the vast world to explore. If it catches you, good for you. It offers a lot of think but they can fall behind the wall of content. The atmosphere will catches you but the playthough may be weary with the time. The world is there but not the story as we got before. We wish the story patch to be finished in great shape one day, then we can try to re-explore the gorgeous world again.
Gothic 1: Start as a weakling, some enemies are untouchable and hit like a truck. End game, one shotting enemies and being near untouchable.

Gothic 3: Clear the whole game with default weapon and default stats, die to a single wolf. End game, one shotting enemies, die to a single wolf.
The game needs mods to make it run well and cut loading time (the game loads the entire world with 3 continents at once, takes too long). The balancing is pretty bad and really funny when you storm an army of orcs, they surround you and...take turns "attacking" 1 at a time (the one you hit by clicking left click on loop is stunlocked, the rest watch till he dies, then you target another). Wolfs stunlock you and attack 4 times per second. Even at endgame with best armor and a ton of hp, you lose 50% hp in about a second. Armor is no longer flat reduction, there is % reduction math behind it, so everything hurts you even at endgame. The only real strategy here is left click for humans/orcs, right click on animals. There is enough XP here to get absurd magic, absurd melee and most of the side skills by endgame. Mana regen at 250 ancient knowledge and magic damage scaling with ancient knowledge makes mages OP. Archery gets free aiming here, making it more useful than in the last games (and headshots crit).
Overall, it's still kind of fun, but not nearly as fun as the last 2 games. This game has no sequel as the companies went their own way after this due to the bugfest disaster launch. One made Risen, which kept the atmosphere, the other kept the lore and attempted to make Gothic 4, which we shall not speak of.
The greatest moments of my childhood are here:
- running around Myrtana
- killing all monsters but wolfs
- F5 and F9 one love
- looting all tha plants around
- saving Gotha from demon
- where is Xardas ?
- stone lifter
one of my all time favourites
authentic characters, awesome music, huge world and lots of quests.
The open world is amazing and it feels very much alive.
The quests and the NPCs you meet are also interesting.
Unfortunately, there are several major issues that spoilt the fun for me:
1. melee combat:
After playing mostly ranged characters in other games recently, I decided that I want to go for a melee character in Gothic 3.
Unfortunately though I soon found out that you will be stunlocked by almost every enemy in the game, making melee builds basically unplayable.
Especially the f*** wolves fight like they are on crack or something.
When you die to a wolf at level 16, then you know that something must be off.
Honestly, melee combat in this game feels plain unfair and I would not recommend it to anybody (especially as there is no dodge key).
2. companions:
companions are incredibly stupid (and weak).
even with 3 enemies rushing at you at the same time, they will just stand there and do absolutely nothing.
They will only join the fight once either you have hit an enemy or an enemy has hit you.
Also I don't know how often I have lost my companion somewhere along the way with me being unable to find him again, so I had to load an older save, losing (sometimes) significant progress in doing so.
Another really annoying point is that while you can fast travel (once you have found the teleport stones), your companions cannot do so.
Seems really completely pointless to me.
Also, they have a tendency to randomly attack NPCs, which is really, really annoying - to say the least.
And lastly, the companions have absolutely no personality of their own.
They are there, but that's it.
They have basically zero interaction with the player.
3: performance / loading times
considering how often I died in melee combat I frequently had to use quickload, causing me to spend a considerable time starring at loading screens.
I don't mind waiting 10-15s, but waiting 2 minutes (game is installed on an SSD) is really bad for such an old game.
4. game stability:
while the game was running relatively fine for about 25 hours or so, I suddenly started getting crashes with "EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION".
I'm currently inside of a cave and as soon as I equip my torch, I will get this exception and the game crashes.
Which is bad, as some of the caves in Gothic 3 are pitch black and even with a torch you can barely see half a meter in fron of you, but without a torch you might as well put a blindfold over your eyes while playing.
I remembered that I had a number of "Light" scrolls in my inventory, so I tried using that spell instead of a torch - which also leads to an immediate crash...
More Gothic is needed to make the world a better place!

i love this game, even if it has few bugs. The atmosphere of this game is awesome, and background music is beautiful! I wish there was remaster..
Well.... i remember playing this game when i was 10 years old. Every time i picked this game for some reason i stopped playing it. After all these years, i said to myself to play this game again, i made a good progress and then the game crashed and i lost for some reason all my save files. I hate this game. Do not waste any money on it let it die on peace
Such a great old school RPG. Wish there were more like it. Pure nostalgia.
This game is for players that like Gothic. It is not for noobs that don't know how to tie their own shoes. This is an exclusive game. There is no game that's close enough, to be just a bit good as this.
It's a Brilliant Classic, but it's made even better by the 4GB patch, and the Texture and UI packs

An absolutely horrible way to level up. Have to have learning points, experience points, scrolls for everything, have to go to shrines, workbenches, campfire, etc, to do anything.
Play it with the community patch 1.75. With some of the other free content patches by the community this is still a very good and fun game.

Although it was buggy as hell and barely playable when it came out, I still played it a ton. With mods it is running better than ever.
Great game, super atmospheric. The Community Patch makes it run super smooth! It really is a true classic.
Worst game i have ever played. Period. Combat is pure diabolical, dreadful and abysmal piece of absolute garbage filled with cat shit, dog shit, bird shit and rat shit makes me regret saying G2 didn't have fluid combat because of their janky animations but this game actually had given more of that fluidity and major improvement in terms of animations and unfortunately everything about it is just pure autism where the protagonist felt like he likes to be staggered by every single enemy hits while you were wondering why most of your hits didn't register and you cant even tell if its actually the weapon range, the enemy's major and PhD in telepathy that they can read all of my attacks and spams their backstep and block or my so-called "major improvement in terms of animations" when they're actually way more janky than G2 ever had, or all of them at once. Lock on mechanic barely even works and you cant even toggle it so you have to hold as much buttons as you could or you won't even swinging the right way and ended up being staggered again and again. And who the fuck thought having such dogshit stamina mechanics with the regeneration rate of a constipated person waiting in the toilet for half an hour waiting for their poop to come out is a good idea and then have most of the enemy procs a hidden debuff that you won't even know of and wondering which ever is the potion that cures it without wasting trying to fuck around and find out?
So they changed the way the game looks and made it a very large open world setting and for some reason it look worse than G2 with texture packs and the whole feeling of it just felt uninspiring and bland. The artstyle were also changed drastically and suddenly the orcs doesn't look scary anymore and Diego, Lester and Milten looks really bland except Gorn and new VA for the protagonist just felt really weird and uncanny at the same time. Combine that with the terrible optimizations and stutterfest when G1 and G2 runs fine even without D3D11 or compare it with vanilla Morrowind or even vanilla Thief Deadly Shadows (which known to be really buggy) can't even be comparable to this mess. You can't even alt-tab or dare yourself to close the game without the game ended up in a permanent black screen forcing you to open task manager and end it manually. You could fix this with dxvk but it ended up with way even more stutterfest and there's just no end to these issues makes me really loathe the game because its just impossible to enjoy it because these stutters would ruin your exploration and melee combo and as if the combat isn't already dogshit you have these issues also trying to choke you to death.
Also why do i have to start over the third time to learn all the basic skills? Does the protagonist really have dementia as i said before? There must be another way to add new skill mechanics to the game or even mounts since its a large open world now...? The OST is the only commendable thing in this game i would've think of being really good and comfy but this game ultimately deserves a 4/10 at best and you thought i would give this game a chance for higher rating because its an "old game" when what made G1 and G2 had way less technical issues and more enjoyable than this hot garbage they could've just stay with the core of the previous titles and i would've tolerate it but nah this review is final and im gonna try make myself suffer even more by trying to complete the main story just because im curious of what Xardas is cooking in this timeline.
I am a gamer since 1997. I saw a LOADS of bugs, glitches, terrible optimization etc. I am able to play a game with stupid steering (without possibility or remap), stupid plot, boring dialogues, characters with charisma of tree. But THIS game is the only one, where all of those are in the same time. So far I haven't finished the game just because of BUGS. Gothic 3 is the first and only. Better play 10 times "Night of the Raven" than one time this. Doors may block you, and you never enter again to some building, where you HAVE to enter. You may finish some quest by accident and it may break other one. Some players wrote "community fixed this, this and that". Community isn't for doing / fixing dev's job. New armors, swords, more conetnt (quests, sounds for ex) etc? OK, fixing bugs - not OK.
When this game came I thought it was exceptionally mid. Years later I think It was actually pretty good, plus It is the last piranha game wich had something new and original in it.

Very underrated chapter of gothic . shame i didnt play it before because people everywhere saying its "very bad and before was better" actually for how much i played its enough to say its good ... its just different in first and second gothic you play your own game and do quests for money and items but in gothic 3 you do quests for money/items AND fractions - you are playing double agent for rebes or orcs and trying to gain reputation for each city and fraction by doing favors and quests for orcs or rebels etc. Im playing with latest community patch ofc and alternative ballance and optimiaztion so i dont have lags and freezes like it was before in 2006 ... maybe thats reason noone liked it before (i remember i installed it 2008 and it was so much lags that i couldnt stand it and deleted it ) But now its great game with all patches
Buy it, Go to Click4Gameplay's YT channel and mod it if you want to enjoy one of the best RPG's ever created
It`s Gothic. Not as atmospheric as the second one but with the community patch gets there.

It is an amazing game that lets you explore and enjoy the world.
This game comes from STEAM ver. 1.60. You have to download patch 1.75 to play this game properly.
Then everything is ok. This is hunting simulator mostly with lots of quest to do from which some of them are funny :)

u cant play this game without cheats , combat system very unbalanced and the story line is very bad , big disappointment , you better go and play gothic 1 and 2 or wait for the gothic 1 remake

One of my favorite games. Sometimes i just want to hop in, level mage and clean the map like im playing some MMO.
It's unplayable without mods (fan patch + parallel universe + ini tweaks to increase distance view), but they are fairly easy to install (or just get a torrent/gog version and put it into game folder).
ok, i have a few stories for better understanding what you will deal with
CASE #1
I, with my loser hero who gets beaten senseless by various fantasy ostriches and wild boars, embarked on a journey across different locations. Given that I couldn't adapt to this utterly broken combat system with its strange timings and hitboxes, I carried a sword more for intimidation than actual fighting. The only skills I upgraded were lockpicking and pickpocketing, and the only weapon I could somewhat handle was my bow (because archery was the only thing that more or less worked, if you don't count fireballs and rain of fire).
After picking up some quests from Montera, I stumbled upon a small orc outpost nearby. The local orc, even while calling me underdeveloped, was enough nice to me and advised not to wander near the castle that was close to the outpost.
The castle was called Gotha , and it was either inhabited by some ancient evil or cursed—who knows. But one thing was certain: there was a lot of gold and chests there, just waiting to be looted. Stealing was second nature to me, and since the entire guard of Cal-Dun was already chasing after me for looting their warehouses and homes, I decided—no one would bother punishing me for robbing Gotha , isn't?
Besides, curiosity always got the better of me in games like this.
Near the walls of the cursed city was a cave, and I bravely rushed into it. And stumbled upon an army of undead. Dealing with zombies was easy—they were slow, so I just ran away, shooting with arrows, ran away, shooting etc until they fell to the ground with that broken ragdolls. But skeletons were tougher—arrows didn’t affect them at all, which meant I had to fight with a sword... in which I was a complete fucknut.
Panicked, I started running through the tunnels, only making things worse as more and more undead chased after me. Wounded, I barely managed to escape the caves with an army of undead on my tail. So I couldn't think of anything better than leading them straight to the orc outpost.
A very, very long battle ensued between the orcs and the undead. Idk if orcs was happy with my gift, but what bothered me the most was that I wouldn’t get any of the experience points for the killed monsters, as the orcs would do all the work. So, like a rat, I ran up behind each skeleton and finished them off.
Thus, I lured out the entire castle’s inhabitants, even a giant winged demon, which the orcs took on... or rather, onto whom I lured him so I could attack him from behind. For this, I gained a ton of experience and completed quests I hadn’t even taken. On top of that, I looted the demon and found some secret artifact, which turned out to be one of five that you need to finish the game .
Even more:
After clearing the caves, I accidentally found a teleport stone to a plot-critical location that you need to reach near the end of the game. And thats it?
Nope.
Then, when I stumbled upon the rebel base a long time after this, they showered me with gold for freeing Gotha , and they settled there themselves. Roaming around the restored Gotha , I saw that the orc outpost had been cleaned out by humans, and I thought about looting it. But instead, I found a orc prison and in prison was... the dimwitted, medieval defective Bruce Lee of this universe, butthole in knight armor, motherfucking Gorn.
Last time i saw him before that he leaving the village at the begining of the game with words: i need check it out, no worry, 5 min, lads
What proves me, for third time now, that he is stil the most useless mercenary piece of shit in entire series.
He failed again. And even resistance clear out the orc outpost dont wanna release him
Bravo, Gorn, what a legend
And that’s, ladies and gentlemen, was just one damn city.
CASE #2
I fought in the arena in a desert city. And two champions were sent against me at once. Considering that I hated the combat system up until the final credits, I couldn’t handle these two morons. According to the rules, the arena should have pure man-to-man sword fights, without some kind of fucking Houdini stuff like magic or bows. But I just couldn’t make it work.
After maybe 15 fucking tries I just tossing an innocent little fireball on that assholes. And... it worked. Threw another one—great, still working.
After killing one of the opponents, the arena quest failed. Ah, I realized— KILLING with magic wasn’t allowed, but USING it was. By the sixth attempt, I figured out the exact number of fireballs I needed to leave the champions with just enough HP so that a light sword strike would knock them out.
And that’s how I won. Leaving the arena happy, I went to the arena manager for my gold. And... then the spectators of the fight attacked me.
Ah, so USING magic wasn’t allowed here after all. After knocking out one, two more came running at me, and so on. The weirdest part was that I litterally dying around 20 times from those two champions just 2 minutes ago, and now in panic, I was flailing my sword at angry fat merchants and blacksmiths like its nothing.
But there was more and more and more of them, i was scared that all city will avenge me for breaking rules of arena fights.
I saved.
Close the game.
In the next day i load it.
And...everything was ok.
Yep, it was 12 unconscious bodies, but they...forget about i beat them up?
And after knocking out at least 12 people and drinking a lot of health potions, I finally made it to the arena manager and got my gold not losing a reputation.
CASE #3
I found in Nordmar (the final and hardest location in the game) the only dark troll in the entire game. After a long and grueling battle, I killed him. Opening the "inventory" of the dark troll, I expected to find his hide to sell...
Nope.
There was a shovel.
Just a fucking shovel.
Inside him.
...
I think that sums up Gothic 3. The fact that I completed it is a miracle.
It’s unfinished, unpolished, and full of bugs. It’s... awful.
But still its generates stories or just create that "great adventure" aura around.
Piranha Bytes didn’t disappoint and delivered one of the worst combat systems I’ve ever dealt with.
There are plenty of fetch quests like "collect 10 *whatever*" or kill 10 monsters. The game quests feels like some average early 2000s MMO.
By halfway through the game, you realize that the loot in the chests is utter garbage and not worth the hours spent fighting mobs.
When you get your hands on magic like fireballs, the game breaks, and all swords, halberds, bows, and crossbows become irrelevant. Moreover, in the last 30% of the game, I didn’t use them at all.
The music is good, but this damn battle brass every fucking single time a fight starts drives me insane. The same melody for every battle, of which there are hundreds.
But I still completed it. Why, I don’t know. I unlocked all the locations and gathered all the teleport stones, collected all the Adanos artifacts and 12 chalices... and I still don’t know why. Maybe I’m a masochist. Maybe I’m an idiot. But I completed it.
If I could leave a review that’s neither negative nor positive, but mixed, I would.
The game was too big and ambitious for 25 German nerd developers, their publisher was garbage, and they had too little time to develop it. They even made one of the endings (which, by the way, is canonical) with a walk into the forest with Xardas and a black screen with "to be continued" because they simply didn’t have time to finish that ending.
But I won’t be too harsh, I’ll give it a plus.
It has its own charm.
I like the exploration and the atmosphere.
I like to complete the quest BEFORE I take it.
The feeling of the great adventure like in first two games is here too.
And... I like to abuse the broken mechanics, thing that all Gothic series are based on.
It’s really only for a niche audience.
