The game that started it all, it may be old but its still fun to this day.
1st extraction and the game crashed, this game is not worth it on PC.
does not have fullscreen, at least not on two screens. tabshift puts game into window mode.
Big flaw with this game : the helldivers have hunted the bugs and automatons to extinction, and have pushed the illuminate to their homeworld. What this means is that you get one planet with 4 small maps and 12 enemies that look and function similarly, the rest was conquered a long time ago. Who knows maybe they will conquer the entire galaxy leaving you with only a menu
Local coop seems to work just fine tho
The dangers of coming into a "Live" game, I spent more time in menus getting lore dumps than I did playing and then everyone is playing high level missions or has moved on to Helldivers 2 - Certainly wouldn't be a good fit for my couch co-op team. It'll probably be fun if you're ready to fail your way to competence but I'm less ready to stick around. Had to play on the Steam Deck with the small UI elements meaning learning to play on the small screen to be ready for teaching my local players was not a good option.
If you're looking for a "Harder" co-op game, it's certainly that.
Putting aside MANY design choices like aliens spawning at the very same inch you are, instantly killing you; lack of high contrast crosshair and further customizations; a better, cleaner and more clarifying UI; and the fact the game is pretty much DEAD but still relying on community progress to unlock stuff, it's still a blast.
Unfortunately, I can only recommend if you gather some friends for a casual fun. In case you decide to go solo, things like aliens spawning right where you are completely kill your experience - and I wonder how tf they never did something about it. Gladly I have no intention of playing Helldivers 2, awyways. Better stick to Deep Rock if you want a game with continous, long term fun and solid progression.
This game will make you laugh, scream, and cry. Do not play it solo. Best twin stick shooter i have ever played. I play the second game a lot, but this has its own charm and i love the shorter rounds. Plus its on sale right now! Had to nab it!
Every button you press could be a disaster. If you trust your teammates, you’re already dead. If you trust yourself, you’re also dead.
This game isn't for me. At first, it’s chaotic fun but this gets boring over time. Even if this game was free, I still wouldn’t keep it in my library. I’d rather "democracy" my way into uninstalling it.
game is good!, its very fun and it still has a fairly big playerbase so id recommend it, come and spread freedom and managed democracy, become more than you are become a *legend* enlist today!
The battles are alow and far apart on the lower difficulty settings but once you hit thr higher levels, the difficulty is ramped up to crazy proportions. Where fire fights feel more cinematic than anything.
Picking a load out of weapons you unlock as you progress are important since they can make or break a round you're playing.
and ter fact you can jump in on another players game really helps build comradery than anything.
Being a multi platform game really makes it interesting to see how others play.
One side feels like a terminator movie, another side feels like Starship Troopers
Stand up stand tall, defendrers of our super Earth Against the Terminid swarm, we'll shadow our valor's worth From the ashses of War, to the stars above we are the Heldivers, united by liberties love
Oh super Earth our might sphere
For you, we have no fear Heldivers
march, the end is near For the Terminids, the final cheer Through the darkest night, our spirit never wanes for every fallen comrade, our resoleve remains we are the shield the sword, the keepers of the flame
in the name of super Earth, her glory we maintain with ablaze and fists raised high we pledge to fight, to do or die For our beloved super Earth we 'll always strive as Heldivers for her we'll die super Earth, our eternal guide in your glory, we take pride Heldivers side by side Till peace in our time.
This game is one of the best indie I have had the pleasure of playing. From fighting giant bugs to advanced aliens (Cyborgs included) this game has a lot of bombastic action that is absolutely enthralling. 9/10 would recommend.
Back to basics I'm playing both Helldiver 1 and 2 I'm doing my part!
absolute cinema. this is an excellent choice if, like me your computer does not have enough storage and you need that helldivers fix. i bought the ultimate edition, but the game would still be phenomenal without it. its just all the dlc. 10/10 must have for helldivers fans. enjoy
basically HD2 but allows for local co-op, which is why i got it in the first place. it's like.. literally 100% the same game by the looks of it. just with weird aiming due to the perspective change
Not very many games age gracefully but this definitely does
Very good game. Nice for casual and serious players. Can be done as single player and multiplayer, each mode offers different challenges.
The concept is simple, the gameplay/controls are good in general.
The sound track is ok.
Player community seems very friendly and fun to play with.
This game gets boring very quickly and it's because the DEV's are lazy.
There has about 5 missions in the whole game doesen't matter what planet you go to the missions are the same really lazy.
Haven't run into any major bugs or crashes besides some stuttering every now and then. Great game, good couch co-op, still pretty easy to jump into games with others.
Bought game. Killed teammate with a stray bullet. They GIfted me a DLC Pass. 10/10 Community
Interesting game, but struggling to adjust to the shared camera.
Feels like you have to all move bunched up together like kids on a field trip, otherwise you are heavily penalized and given zero warning for enemies approaching.
I've played a bunch of Magicka, which has a similar shared camera, and it never felt "bad" like the camera here does.
FOR DEMOCRACY. In all seriousness the game is really fun If you enjoy being put in situations where there seems no out. This is not for the "casual" audience, there will have to be some level of effort and luck as well
One of the best games, I've ever played! So, I joined the helldivers during the "Helldivers 2" hype, and was deeply encouraged to play this game daily, several hours non-stop. The game presents gameplay, I have never experienced before, especially the hardcore aspects of the game, making every decision count. The variety of equipment and details in game is astonishing for a game, which may not look as "modern", but it definitely is a gem.
When playing launching my first missions, the extreme difficulty of the game, like team kill from literally anything (bullets, grenades and even vehicles, which took a while to avoid, XD) at first took some time to adjust, but with some practice it becomes one heck of a fight (especially when you join LVL 12+ missions). The abundance of upgrades and unlocks, motivates the players to keep on playing, as with new attachments you get to experience better and smoother gameplay.
Another thing, is the community, I can swear that I have not seen a community such cooperative and supportive, literally every game with randoms, made me want to add them on, as they helped out a huge bunch during gameplay. I have played a variety of shooters, and knowing human's corrupt mind, every once in a while, you encounter a grief that just doesn't let you enjoy the game. Helldivers is a complete opposite experience, throughout my gameplay, I have never seen players deliberately attempting to fail the mission (besides quitters XD), with every team kill, resulting in an instant recovery, which is a huge thumbs up.
Helldivers will always have a special place in my heart, because the game had delivered every detail perfectly, which I am glad to have experienced! With its cheap price, I'd definitely recommend to consider, even if you do not have friends to play with, this game will get you those friends, trust me!
I love this game (especially since it was all I could afford since I’m too poor to buy the second one)
Overall, this is a great entry in the Helldivers series, and I love the top down shooter gameplay. Even when several battle segments on different planets get tough, we still end up pulling through because the squads are very cooperative. I very much recommend this game to everyone who likes PVE games, and working together with teammates.
I love the old school helldivers, good to see the community is still active even with the second one out!
Kill the enemy and get your friends killed. Very fun game with friends.
old but gold
test your skills and teamwork
easy to join, leave or kick
good luck with random loadout and have fun grinding samples
For how the second one plays, this game is very nice in it's own respects and I find it very enjoyable.
Very fun to play even with randoms. I have a gripe about the sheer amount of dlc with some dlc weapons and stratagems that are actually just better than what you can get just playing the game
The shared camera makes it easier to watch out for traitors. The only complaint I can think of is that you can't fire while prone. Otherwise, still a great multiplayer game.
Great for couch co-op with your brother, son, sister, daughter, grandpa, grandma, etc. Or if you don't have any relatives, you can still go to multiplayer online and found another like you to play together. Great Game!! Fortunately the sequel don't have couch co-op anymore, only online multiplayer.
I'm comparing this to the sequel since that's probably what everyone knows more about nowadays.
I like the game. Despite how much hasn't changed from this to Helldivers 2, I like the individual gameplay differences it still offered compared to its sequel. Its alot more involved and makes you mind your teammates more, since you're forced to constantly be around them. All of your are forced to use the same camera unlike the 2nd game where everyone can go fuck all and not ruin the others exerience. Its a lot more stressful but also more satisfying when you don't friendly fire. The infinite reinforcements and the infinite time also encourages those who are really good at the game to just play for aslong as they want unlike the sequel that gave you a 40 minute limit. You can theoretically stay in one planet forever, atleast it feels like it, I don't know if you could. Ofcourse this contrasts just how fast pace the game actually is, would you ACTUALLY want to? This game is so much more hardcore even at just level 5-7 compared to the sequel.
Though I'm only speaking with a few days of experience with Helldivers 1. I've got hundreds of hours on Helldivers 2 so I know I have a bias. But this does show that despite how many mechanics stayed the same between the two the experience is still really different. If you want a more involved and more stressful game, Helldivers 1 has you covered. If you want something more familiar and lenient, Helldivers 2 is also a good choice.
Amazing game, one of those hidden gems that you might see. Had a lot more hours on Ps4

A solid 8/10 top down arcade shooter.
It's relatively stylistic and can be unforgiving at times. The game shines with 4 person co-op and it's diverse enemies following several interstellar theaters of operation. The use of friendly fire makes the game more "group" dependent but led to an overall fluid sense of accomplishment when you complete an objective...... with everyone alive.
Even with the advent of Hell Drivers II this game is still remarkable. Also it borders on a different genre. Games are quicker, and more causal as well balanced. There's also multiplayer and existing lobbies even in 2025. The global battle map is interactive with every other hell diver in the world, so you really do feel as if you are part of something bigger.
Progression is nice too with a fair degree of unlock able weapons, stratagems and vehicles.
Strategems are call ins you use with arrow keys and are a fundamental AND FUN part of the game, When fighting hordes of bugs or robots or aliens you can call in bombs, napalm, turrets etc to help with the fight. You can also call in fallen teammates.
The DLC can add up and is typically worth it but if one individual has the DLC they can call in DLC equipment to use.
But why play this when Hell Divers II is newer and more popular? well glossing over the aforementioned stylistic differences and arcade nature of the game, it's smaller (significantly less gigs), it runs on older devices and is cheaper.
i love being mauled to death by 76 rspca shelter dogs mutilated into cyborg hounds, 10/10 game
I like it just as much as the 2nd game. It'd be nice to see it updates/remastered, and brought up to speed with modern UI, and graphics.
i only played for a couple of hours and i can already see why some people say it's better than HD2, you only get stronger and stronger as you level up like in deep rock galactic, game is better balance by not having an awful ragdoll mechanic and with most weapons being relatively useful and unique and its not a fucking live service also you can get this game with all dlcs for less than 10 bucks during sales. so yeah :3/10 gonna keep playing this instead of it's bug ridden, terribly balance, money sucking sequel
I came to this game out of curiosity from having played the second one. I can say without a doubt that it's a fantastic time, even with a little under an hour on my belt.
I think this game is less on-the-nose with its parody than the second game, and I enjoy that... it feels a little more serious, more like you're simply part of a militia that are fighting honourably for what they believe in, and there's not much more to it. At least, you don't see a lot of that on-the-nose parody near the beginning of the game.
I love the depth that comes with the aiming here. The aiming feels slippery, yet I can already tell that it allows for a high ceiling of skill where you get used to that sort of aiming style, and you're popping enemies left and right with a sense of simplicity and ease.
As a big fan of permanent progression systems in games, this is fantastic. You collect samples in missions that you can use to level up your stratagems and unlock new ones. I was super happy to find out that you could level up stratagems, since I think that leads to an incredibly satisfying experience. You can even level up your re-spawn and resupply stratagems so that the cool-down is faster, and you get more ammo from the drops.
I also adore the game's art-style. It's much more cartoon-y than the sequel, and I felt that it fit the game and its world rather well. I see no reason not to recommend that you pick this up and have a solid time with some friends. ^_^
Great game. Fun local co-op that extends to online play. Many difficulty levels to choose from, well done.
Freedom. Liberty. Managed Democracy. Friendly fire.
This game is amazing, but with one fatal flaw. It's not very fun single player. Of course, this can be easily circumvented by just playing with others, and then the game soars. I just bought some DLC, and I'm ready to kick even more ass.
Try this game. Set a timer. If you don't like it, refund it. If you do, keep playing. Give it a shot. You'll like it.
FOR SUPER EARTH!
Not good and really surprised that a second game was created. Enemies are much worse in this game, and balance is really bad. I like the top down view, but the game-play needs help. Stuck in reload animation while getting swamped by Robot dogs that continue to reset the animation and reduce health quickly. Then flamethrower troops burning me while I am prompted to press (E) to get up. This was just dropping into a mission that was low level. It might be better with a group, but those are hard to come by at this stage in the game cycle.
The game is extremely fun but there is one problem though, it crashes randomly when I join multiplayer for some reason . It might just be my laptop. Yet still the game is great.
Helldivers 2 if it was a completely finished game. Very good! Relatively active and kind fan-base akin to its sequel, as well as flat out good gameplay. Game can be hard and controls can be awkward, but once you adapt and play for a bit it's very fun. Make sure to get this on sale as you can buy both the game and the just as essential DLC for around $8 USD. Also, if you use mouse and keyboard and struggle finding your mouse when not ADS, turn on the bigger mouse setting, helped me a ton!
Game is not worth to buy if you want to win a Galactic War. Bugs and those Calamari people already been defeated. Not so long ago they manage to defend super earth in which they where able to take two more sector then the day after that manage to lose 2 sector resulting in super earth under Cyborgs attack. For an old game where Devs prolly don't care anymore i think it's not worth to play and save yourself some bucks.
Only partial controller support? For a twin stick shooter? That originally released for Playstation? What?
M + KB controls awful as well, and there's no way to change the sensitivity.
I was waiting for a teammate and spun around at the same location for a good while and then an achievement popped up. 10/10
a very good game and I would totally recommend to people who have played helldivers 2 although the base controls suck thankfully you can remap them
The cyborgs are winning. I'd hate to see this game die after so long and just want to know if we win, or lose, will HD1 end? Or will I be able to keep enjoying this classic?
good but singleplayer fucking sucks because of how unfair it is. difficulty change is MASSIVE at level 6
I played this game on PS3. One of the notable difference was the fact that some tricks can only be pulled off in PC.
That and the fact I can use in-game chat instead of Sony Playstation's god-awful messaging.
The best part? You can chat DURING the loading screen, making for hilarious commentary as you drop at supersonic speeds towards your enemies/your own mortal doom.
This game still holds up despite its age but I foresee no further updates or changes. Think of this as a really polished gem.
As always, teamwork makes the dream work. Have fun shooting your enemies (or your friends if they are traitors) and nuking the snap out of all those who would stand against Freedom, Liberty and Prosperity.
